Ben Allan and Clara Chong.
While production shutdowns are causing mass unemployment among all sectors of the screen sector, some practitioners see an upside.
Main Course Films’ writer/director Clara Chong and producer/Dop Ben Allan are in post on Wabi-Sabi, a deeply personal feature doc on ageing and death centred on Clara’s mother, who suffered from multiple system atrophy (Msa), a rare neuro-degenerative disorder.
“Because Clara and I do the majority of our projects together, doing post production at home has meant we can do things like put the kids to bed and then go back to colour grading,” Allan tells If.
“Now in the time of the coronavirus, it means we can be social distancing while staying on schedule with post on the film and our other projects.”

Dean Kyrwood in ‘The Flood’ (Photo credit: Coco Banks Photography).
Dean Kyrwood will play psychic twin brothers in Alex Proyas’ surreal short film Mask of the Evil Apparition.
The first film to shoot at Proyas’ new self-contained studio in Sydney, it will star Bonnie Ferguson as Olivia, a young woman lost in a nocturnal, dreamlike city.
Antonio and his twin brother try to help Olivia find her way home but quickly realise she is being pursued by a shadowy cult known as The Mysterious Ones.
Although Antonio has the ability to psychically connect with the cult there is little he can do to protect her or himself from Olivia’s own evil supernatural twin.
It’s the filmmaker’s third collaboration with Ferguson, who appeared in his short Phobos and in a photographic exhibition. “I think Bonnie’s a star – a true film actor who can convey so much just with those incredible eyes,...

George Pullar.
George Pullar and newcomer Ashlyn Louden-Gamble have won the lead roles in Moon Rock for Monday, a coming-of-age road movie from first-time writer-director Kurt Martin.
Pullar, whose star is on the rise after roles in Fighting Season, Playing for Keeps and A Place to Call Home, will play homeless teenager Tyler.
Tyler is on the run from the cops when he meets Monday (Louden-Gamble), a terminally ill 11-year-old, at a train station. Forming an unlikely bond, they embark on a road trip across the country in search of a moon rock which Monday believes will heal her. The pair is pursued by the police who believe Tyler has kidnapped the girl.
Jim Robison, who formed Lunar Pictures after an affable split from Blake Northfield’s Bronte Pictures, will produce. Shooting is due to start in Sydney and Coober Pedy on August 26, funded by private investors and the Producer Offset.
