Producer Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and Universal will remake director Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 'unexplained bird attacks' suspense/horror feature "The Birds", adapting author Daphne du Maurier's 1952 novelette, to be directed by Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijen ("Penoza"):
"...'Melanie Daniels', a modern rich socialite is part of a jet-set who always gets what she wants. When lawyer 'Mitch Brenner' sees her in a pet shop, he plays something of a practical joke on her, and she decides to return the favor. She drives about an hour north of San Francisco to Bodega Bay, where Mitch spends the weekends with his mother 'Lydia' and younger sister 'Cathy'.
"Soon after her arrival, however, the birds in the area begin to act strangely. A seagull attacks Melanie as she is crossing the bay in a small boat, and then, Lydia finds her neighbor dead, obviously the victim of a bird attack.

At the fingertips of Diederik Van Rooijen’s horror, The Possession of Hannah Grace, is an engaging, ghoulish and terrifying prospect of intense atmospheric horror with a terrific setting to inject some superb frights. That said, it becomes quite painful to report that within the first ten minutes of the films short eighty-six-minute running time it fails to convince the audience what you’re watching is actually nightmarish, nor express the quality of horror it has at hand. Ultimately, Rooijen’s film with every opportunity takes the easiest and most simplistic conventional avenue possible with so little inventive cinematic narratives or attributes examined, leading to a deeply unimaginative picture.

It’s a weekend of repeats.
With just one nationwide debut at the box office, a series of holdovers are set to take the top spots, with the second frame of Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” heading for first place with an estimated $24 million.
The sole cross-country rollout, Sony’s “Possession of Hannah Grace,” is likely to open to $6.4 million from 2,065 North American theaters after taking in $2.56 million on Friday. That estimate is more than double what Sony had originally predicted for “Hannah Grace.”
Directed by Diederik Van Rooijen and written by Brian Sieve, the horror flick follows a young morgue attendant (Shay Mitchell) who realizes a cadaver has been possessed by a demon. Shot on a Sony A7S II, “Hannah Grace” has a C- CinemaScore and a 19% Rotten Tomatoes score, with its Audience Score at 22%.

The utterly flimsy and formulaic goosebump thriller The Possession of Hannah Grace is the latest drab and dreary take on the possession horror film genre. Strained with creepy cliche-ridden jolts and the tired copycat mentality of countless frightfests imaginable Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen ("Daglicht") assembles a choppy exorcist vehicle that is laughably bad. Riddled with tedious manufactured scares, anemic writing, and unfocused acting The Possession of Hannah Grace elicits unintentional chuckles moreso than crafty bloody knuckles. This perverse plate of predictability has been served once too often. Along with Van Rooijen's mechanically macabre direction screenwriter Brian Sieve (the "Boogeyman" movie series) aptly creates an atmospheric, eerie universe that gives Possession its terrorizing texture and sense of corrosive confinement. Still, Sieve's woefully pedestrian script does not dutifuuly...

The second weekend of “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is dominating North American moviegoing with an estimated $28 million at 4,017 locations, early estimates showed Friday.
The second weekend of “Creed II,” the third weekend of “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” and the fourth frame of “The Grinch” are battling for second place in the $15 million range. “The Possession of Hannah Grace,” the weekend’s only opener, is materializing at the high end of forecasts with about $6 million at 2,065 locations on Thursday night.
If the estimates hold for “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” it will be the third year in a row that a holdover Disney animated movie has won the post-Thanksgiving weekend with a $27 million-plus take, following “Coco” last year with $27.5 million and “Moana” with $28.3 million in 2016. “Ralph” should finish the weekend with about $120 million in its first 11 days — giving it a decent shot at matching the final domestic gross of 2012’s “Wreck-It Ralph” at $189 million.

One of my least favorite subgenres in horror is possession movies. Sure, there have been a lot of great ones to come out over the years (with The Exorcist being the all-time standard bearer), but if I’m being honest, when I’m looking to indulge in the horrific side of entertainment, films about possession are going to be the last thing I would choose. That being said, The Possession of Hannah Grace already had my general disinterest to contend with going into it, and other than strong performances from its two leads, there’s really not a ton else that makes this a truly standout effort. All in all, Hannah Grace is something I’d refer to as “fine,” but that’s about it.

In theory, putting “possession” in the title of a horror movie should add to its box-office allure. But it probably won’t take long for word to trickle out that “The Possession of Hannah Grace,” after the first five minutes, is not an exorcism movie. Rather, it’s about the corpse of a girl who dies during an exorcism, so technically speaking you could say that it qualifies. But viewers hooked on the spectacle of demonic possession tend to like their satanic tropes served neat. “The Possession of Hannah Grace” serves them sloppy, if not without a certain random soupçon of grisly style.
Just about the entire film is set in a morgue. And though it stars Shay Mitchell, from “Pretty Little Liars,” it has her playing a character with almost no personality: Megan, an ex-cop and (barely) recovering alcoholic who lands a job working the graveyard shift as a...

Morgues already make a great setting for any horror film, but throw a possessed dead body into the mix and then you’ve got yourself a creepy-ass story to tell! It’s really a simple premise, but it sure looks like it’ll make for an entertaining horror film that will offer some crazy thrills and chills, especially if you scare easy.
The movie stars Pretty Little Liars‘ Shay Mitchell and the film is set in the aftermath of an exorcism that has gone horribly wrong. The body may be dead, but there’s an evil demon that still resides in it who is going to find joy in scaring the living shit out of a young women who is working the graveyard shift at the morgue… alone. Here’s the synopsis:

"You know what they say: if an exorcism isn't completed, evil will find a new vessel." Sony has unveiled the trailer for a horror thriller titled The Possession of Hannah Grace, another scary possession movie, this one directed by Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijen. When a cop who is just out of rehab takes the graveyard shift in a city hospital morgue, she faces a series of bizarre, violent events caused by an evil entity in one of the corpses. Shay Mitchell (seen on "Pretty Little Liars" and "The Heiresses") stars as the cop, named Megan Reed, and the full cast includes Stana Katic, Grey Damon, Jacob Ming-Trent, Louis Herthum, and Kirby Johnson as the titular Hannah Grace. This reminds me a lot of The Autopsy of Jane Doe, but with a few different twists. And plenty of creepiness. Every time it feels like Hollywood has decided to remake a property that couldn’t be more sacred, they one up the ante. Michael Bay has been prepping a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense/horror classic The Birds, and Variety reports that the project has now found its director: Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijen. Van Rooijen has directed the thrillers Tape and Daylight previously, but never a film in the English language.
Hitchcock’s film from 1963, arguably his last great movie and the story of how birds terrorized a small town in Northern California, has never been officially remade, but its influences are everywhere. Heck, even Jurassic World has a scene with pterodactyls worthy of Hitch.
No details on additional plot points or when production is expected to begin have yet been revealed.

The remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds is still very much an active project...
To answer your question: no, nothing's sacred.
There's not a great number of people who get to the end of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and reckon that it needs a fresh approach. But the team at Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes appear to be on that very short list.
For some time now, there's been talk of a remake of The Birds, but after hearing nothing for a while, we thought the idea had been quietly dropped. Yet we thought wrong. News now reaches us that the new The Birds has found a director, and very much remains an active project.

London, March 15: Naomi Watts has not been officially cast in the remake of 1963's 'The Birds', which will be produced by 'Transformers' director Michael Bay and helmed by Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijen.

Fuller continued saying that he and Bay have sat down with the blonde beauty and, conceptually, all of them want to make the same movie, but until they have a script, it will be a little premature to say that the actress has signed.

It’s been so long since we’d heard anything concrete about Platinum Dunes' plans to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s classic beaky chiller The Birds that we started to wonder whether it had contracted Avian Flu, kicked the development bucket, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible. But it would appear that re-imagined parrot is alive and squawking, as Variety reports that Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen will handle the megaphone.Well, we say, “will”. We’ve been here before on the Birds front, with Martin Campbell previously attached to call the shots and Naomi Watts linked with the lead role in the past. Neither is still involved.Universal and the Platinum Dunes team are, somewhat sensibly, making it clear that this redo will owe more to Daphne du Maurier’s short story than Hitchcock’s film, though the plot is still largely a secret, with Jonathan Herman...

Producer Michael Bay, his Platinum Dunes production company and Universal will remake director Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 'unexplained bird attacks' suspense/horror feature "The Birds", adapting author Daphne du Maurier's 1952 novelette, to be directed by Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijen ("Penoza"):
