Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes's life has changed forever. The former tech entrepreneur was once poised to be the "next Steve Jobs" of healthcare, but in 2022, Holmes was convicted on three charges of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud by lying to investors. This May, she reported to a Texas prison to begin her 11-year, three-month sentence.
But something else that's changed about Holmes since her days as the head of Theranos? Her voice. Hulu's 2022 series "The Dropout" (which stars Amanda Seyfried as Holmes) traces the backstory of the self-made billionaire's distinct baritone voice, which many believe she faked. Those who watched HBO's 2019 documentary "The Inventor" - which details Holmes's troubled history - or other recorded interviews will be familiar with Holmes's oddly deep voice. However, people who knew her before she was in the spotlight say her voice wasn't always like this. While...

Writing a show like The Dropout, which follows the rise and fall of Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes, wasn’t easy, says showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether. Not only was research for the story extensive, given its scientific nature, but Covid-19 also delayed the project by three years, and Holmes’ trial started while Meriwether was finishing the script.
“It was definitely a lot of research, but if you spoke to anybody who’s done a true story, I think there’s just a moment when you have to put [things] aside — you learn a lot of stuff and then you have to think about what the story is that you want to tell. It’s always that push-pull of what really happened and how can the narrative be condensed and how can it be the most effective,” Meriwether tells THR. “That was all really new to me.

At the 2016 Emmys, Laurie Metcalf earned three acting nominations, proving her versatility and her popularity in the industry. The actress, a three-time winner for “Roseanne,” collected bids for “Getting On,” her only time nominated as a lead, and for her guest spots on “The Big Bang Theory” and “Horace and Pete.” Two years later, she earned her first career Oscar nomination, for her supporting role in “Lady Bird” (2017). Now at the upcoming 2022 Emmys, Metcalf has a chance of repeating her Emmy triple play with nominations for three other shows — “The Conners,” “The Dropout” and “Hacks.”

Even if you haven't seen Netflix's "Inventing Anna" or Hulu's "The Dropout," chances are you've stumbled onto a podcast devoted to breaking down Anna Delvey (real name Anna Sorokin)'s infamous cons or scrolled past a TikTok or Twitter thread recounting disgraced Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes's fraud case.
For about four years, from 2013 to 2017, Sorokin scammed just about everyone she encountered to maintain the faux lavish lifestyle of a German heiress, from banks and hotels to the friends she met along the way. Meanwhile, Holmes, the founder of biotech company Theranos, deceived investors and patients for over a decade about the viability of her blood-testing device, the Edison, claiming it could run dozens of tests on a single drop of blood. She raked in millions in funding knowing all along the technology simply didn't work.
Sorokin and Holmes were convicted of fraud in 2019 and 2022, respectively, and their TV dramatizations followed soon after.

How ‘The Dropout’ Uses Costume Design to Make Elizabeth Holmes’ Signature Style Feel Like a ‘Facade’
Disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is recognized by the specific image she sculpted herself in: a deep-voiced, highly-mannered CEO decked out in black turtlenecks to emulate her role model, Steve Jobs. But in the Hulu miniseries “The Dropout,” which follows her trajectory from founding the company that would make her famous to being indicted by the U.S. government, viewers don’t see her in her well-known get-up until the end of the third episode, when she makes her full heel turn into a fraudster and grifter.
Across the first act of the show, the audience sees a very different Holmes, one who dresses like a typical college student of her time period, with a wardrobe made out of mid-2000s retail items. As she struggles to find her footing in the professional world, her outfits reflect her well-deserved imposter syndrome, conveying that she’s a teenager desperately trying to play the part of a boss.

The Searchlight series The Dropout drops on Hulu tomorrow, March 3, at an intriguing time, close to two months after Therano founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was found guilty on four out of 11 federal charges, specifically for defrauding investors.
Holmes’ tale is that of a Silicon Valley tragic hero, a Mark Zuckerberg in reverse; a brilliant Stamford University dropout who raised masses of money, and made all sorts of political connections in an effort to revolutionize the blood testing industry using small volumes of blood from a patient’s finger prick. The Edison blood testing device was the aorta of this idea, however, Holmes could never get it off the ground. At one point in time, Theranos was valued at $9 billion and had Walgreens as a major retail partner in 2013.
