- Was a drill instructor in the US Army Reserves, providing Basic Training for US Army recruits at Fort McClellan, Alabama and Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He placed 2nd in the 108th Division Training for Drill Sergeant of the Year. He was honorably discharged and had attained the rank of Staff Sergeant (E6).
- Plays the piano and enjoys singing karaoke. He has won informal karaoke contests in the US, South Africa, Australia, and Austria.
- Joe performed voice over radio commercials for Wake Forest University Athletics on WSJS radio in Winston Salem, NC. In high school, he operated the "Fever Meter" at the Wake Forest University football and basketball games. It was a contraption with lights that "measured" the crowds response and a siren that would sound when the lights reached the top.
- He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
- He has two African Grey parrots.
- Holds a current FAA Pilot's License, and flies a Mooney Turbo M20K-231. Prior to owning the Mooney, he flew a Piper Cherokee 180. He obtained his license and training in Charlotte, NC.
- The engine in his Cherokee 180 airplane seized due to mechanical failure on a trip to Florida, but Joe landed safely in a corn field and walked away. The only physical damage to the airplane aside from the engine failure was due to the fire that started when the engine backfired after the component failed.
