With the release of Renfield, Nicolas Cage gets to fulfill one of his bucket list roles. He stated that the three roles he wanted to play eventually were Superman, Captain Nemo, and Dracula. He missed his chance for Superman but has at least knocked Dracula off his list. Now that the film has been released, we can see all the fun references to the Dracula lore. What Renfield Easter Eggs did you miss?
WArning!!!! There will be spoilers for Renfield ahead!
Dracula 1931 Footage
Director Chris McKay wanted to do everything he could to tie this film back to the original 1931 Dracula film starring Bela Lugosi. The font and style of the Renfield poster mimics that of the original poster. In the film, we see scenes from the original film recreated using the modern actors portraying the characters. With all due respect to the vampire western Near Dark and the coolness of The Lost Boys, my favorite ’80s vampire flick is pretty easily Fright Night (watch it Here). It has a way about it that is just unmatched. It’s able to mix the ’80s setting, think Jerry in the club hypnotizing Amy, with both a modern and classic feel. Its almost the evolutionary step of what Hammer films would have turned into had they not folded. Its certainly beloved enough with it’s own documentary and a sequel, remake, and sequel to that remake. That’s what I wanted to talk about today. While Near Dark got no sequel, probably for the best, and The Lost Boys got multiple awful sequels,...

In late September, Encyclopocalypse unleashed Fright Night: Origins, a book touted as the definitive literary adaptation of Tom Holland’s 1985 comedy creature feature. Springing straight from the inkwell of Holland himself with some help from novelist A. Jack Ulrich, Origins is a (mostly) unabridged account of the events you remember from the original movie. It is the teen vampire comedy you know and love, but more of it– for better and for worse.
Conceived as a springboard for a new trilogy of novels, Fright Night: Origins is Tom Holland’s attempt to course correct the franchise after the creative and financial disappointments that were Fright Night Part 2 (1988), the 2011 remake, and the 2013 direct-to-video sequel. None of these efforts had Holland’s direct involvement, so one might imagine that bringing him back to the Fright Night fold would serve to avoid similar missteps. Unfortunately, Fright Night Origins suffers from many of the...

It’s been a while since I penned a Which is Better article on here, so, as seen as Summer is making me wish Autumn was here, and I’m counting down the days for the Halloween season, I figured I’d go back to two of my favourite vampire movies ever, and pit them against each other in this almost-pointless-because-it’s-subjective-anyway battle of evil versus evil, vamp versus vamp. Fright Night versus The Lost Boys.
*Cue People are Strange by The Doors*
Ok, so I grew up with The Lost Boys on my television set and the record of the soundtrack echoing from the stereo system. I have always had a lot of fondness for the 80s glam-vamp teen-comedy that featured some of the big names from the era, with Keifer Sutherland in the role of head-but-not-quite-head vampire, David, Jason Patrick and Corey Haim as brothers Micheal and Sam,...

Interest in Tom Holland’s 1985 vampire opus Fright Night could not be any higher right now. Not only has the film just been released here in the UK as a limited edition Steelbook (via Zavvi) which sold out on pre-orders alone; but also the documentary You’re So Cool Brewster! The Story of Fright Night has also – finally – got into the hands of fans following its crowdfunding campaign.
Which is why the internet went crazy when the possibility of a Third film in the franchise arose (I guess we’re ignoring the remake and it’s sequel, a film I actually rather enjoyed), following a series of tweets from Tom Holland regarding copyright possibly returning to him in a couple of years time. However, it seems people misread the situation and Holland is actually penning a new prose novel, as he clarified yesterday…

Vampire classic gets full-blown documentary film treatment. A sleeper hit upon release, writer/director Tom Holland’s 1985 Hitchockian vampire thriller Fright Night has gone on to be near-mythical status among fans. The film, which starred William Ragsdale as suburban horror movie fan Charlie Brewster whose suave neighbor (Chris Sarandon) is actually an ancient vampire, is widely…

It’s with the heaviest of hearts that I have to report that Anton Yelchin has passed way at the age of twenty seven. A young actor of incredible talent who got better each time he appeared on screen, he was pronounced dead earlier today after a freak car accident found him pinned to a security gate outside his home. After getting his break on ER in 2000, Yeltchin rose to prominence with roles in Hearts in Atlantis and Along Came a Spider before getting his big break playing Zack Mazursky in 2006’s Alpha Dog. This lead to him taking the lead role in the criminally underrated Charlie Bartlett, which saw him go toe to toe with a Robert Downey Jr. at the start of his comeback, which itself lead to Yelchin breaking into the mainstream with 2009, bringing his charisma and charm to the roles of Chekov in Jj Abrams’s...

I have nothing against straight-to-dvd sequels to theatrical films. If a movie does minimally well in the theater and there's an audience for a lower-budget and less risky follow-up, I say why not? With that being said, sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. I actually enjoyed 30 Days of Night: Dark Days and even The Scorpion King sequel and prequel. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about Fright Night 2: New Blood.
Charlie Brewster, his ex-girlfriend Amy, and best friend "Evil" Ed are part of a group of high school students studying abroad in Romania. At the same time, ghost-hunting reality TV host Peter Vincent is exploring the haunted castles of the area. Charlie's professor, Gerri Dandridge, has a hidden motivation for teaching at a school full of teens. By night, she's a vampire searching for the blood of virgins to bathe in to keep her beautiful form. The...

As usual, let's begin with a brief history lesson.
Fright Night (1985) arrives from Columbia Pictures and writer/director Tom Holland (he'd later go on to direct Child's Play, The Temp, and Thinner), becomes a modest box office hit, and goes on to become a nostalgic favorite among horror fans of a certain age. (Like me.) Essentially a teenager vs. vampire rendition of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, the original Fright Night was about a kid who discovers that his new neighbor is a murderous bloodsucker -- but of course nobody believes him. Fright Night Part 2 (1987) reunited the kid (William Ragsdale) and the reluctant hero (Roddy McDowall) from the first movie, but the plot (about a female vampire with a serious grudge) wasn't nearly as novel. Worth a look for fans of the original Fright Night, but certainly nothing too memorable. Fright Night (2011) brought a very amusing Colin Farrell to...

The team behind Fright Night 2: New Blood is trying extremely hard to make sex sell for them, probably because you had no idea that there was a sequel to the remake of Fright Night. But even if you didn’t, you probably won’t be surprised that it’s going Dtv on October 1st. Craig Gillespie’s flick was one of the few remakes of 2011 to even make its budget back and was a lot more fun than its reboot stigma offered, but it looks like they’ve gone with the tried-and-true plot with different ingredients. The most notable is giving Jerry a sex change. Jaime Murray is the vampire this time around, and for some reason, they’re all named Jerry and Charlie Brewster just keeps finding them among the humans. Probably because he’s still a peeping tom. And because when you’re turned into a bloodsucker you legally have to change your...

The original Fright Night was slick, the reboot was solid, and now we have images from Fright Night 2, a completely unnecessary film made for nothing more than milking the franchise for what its worth on the home entertainment front. We even have a "Gerri Dandridge" female lead vampire played by Jaime Murray, whereas in the first film, and reboot, we had a Jerry Dandridge, played by Chris Sarandon, and then in the remake by Colin Farrell. You'd think there'd be more original writing at play here. Now, we have some folks, who I admit, I've never heard of before in Will Payne playing Charlie Brewster as opposed to Anton Yelchin, and Sean Power as Peter Vincent.

Something we find fascinating about some of our favorite horror flicks is the fact that the heroes and heroines are sometimes the last person you would peg as the sole hope for humanity. Never once have I taken a trip to the grocery store and thought the gum-chewing clerk ringing up the new issue of GQ and a bag of Meow Mix for me is going to some day save me from the zombie apocalypse, demonic possession, or a blood-thirsty pack of lycanthropes. But, the fact of the matter is that the seemingly unassuming store clerk may be the only hope for humanity. He or she may just have the cunning and instinct of a fox, the wit of a college professor and the strength of a competitive bodybuilder. But, their exceptional skill set may be lying dormant, waiting to be awoken by unforeseen catastrophe or malady. Such has been...

Let me introduce you to the 'Final Guy'.
So we all pretty much know the basic slasher film tropes that earn a horror character the 'final girl' title, right? For those of you at the back who fell asleep during your last film theory lesson; it's pretty much as it sounds – the last character left after the dust, blood and all kinds of unspeakable carnage has finally settled. She's the one that demonstrates exceptional perseverance in the face of abject terror and most importantly, the one who subdues the maniac once and for all -or until the next sequel at least. This character just so happens to be a girl because that was the gender of choice for those wonderful folk who decided their main hero (or victim) when writing for this ostensibly male dominated genre.
How about we focus on someone a little more under-appreciated by the horror audiences and theorists – the 'final' guy.

With Eduardo Rodriguez in the director's chair and gorgeous Brit actress Jaime Murray -below ('Hustle', 'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena', 'Dexter') already lined up to play the main vamp this time around it seems that 'Fright Night 2' is definitely going to happen. The Fox Home Entertainment project which will be shooting straight to DVD and likely underwhelm all whom manage to catch it has scored a new trio of cast members that will obviously be replacing the whole of the original cast. So here we go...Will Payne ('Elfie Hopkins') takes Anton Yelchin's place as Charlie Brewster, Irish actor Sean Power replaces David Tennant as Peter Vincent and finally Chris Waller ('Inbred') takes over from Christopher Mintz-Plasse as 'Evil' Ed - yes, that's right the Dead vampire....

Bloody Disgusting is reporting the upcoming sequel to the remake of Fright Night has cast Jaime Murray (best known as the unpredictable firestarter Lila Tournay in Dexter's second season) as its villain. In a seeming mix of recycling the first's plot with some flavor of the 1988 sequel, the film sees Evil Ed and Peter Vincent return (this time Vincent is in fact, a fictional vampire killer) as Charlie Brewster studies abroad and runs afoul of Gerri, his professor/a vampire.
This is the official synopsis: “When high school student Charlie attends a study abroad program with his horror obsessed friend “Evil” Ed and ex-girlfriend Amy in Romania, he soon discovers their young attractive professor Gerri (Jaime Murray) is a real life vampire. Too bad no one believes him. In fact, Evil Ed finds it amusing and it only feeds his vampire obsession. When Gerri turns Ed, Charlie seeks out Peter Vincent,...

Our first post-Catherine episode of CSI, "Tressed to Kill," may have also been the most eerie offering so far this season. I can safely say that I didn’t see the murderer being a mama’s boy, with a hair fetish, fulfilling a desire to make women over in her image and then kill them.
This episode officially creeped me out, and I don’t think I will ever be able to listen to Charlie Rich’s “The Most Beautiful Girl” again without the images of the first victim popping into my head.
I also have to give full props to Charlie Brewster.... I mean William Ragsdale. Although he played a schmuck recently on Justified, I didn’t see him being the culprit; my money was on the son Adam Kemp (David Gallagher) from the moment he and his vapid mother came on screen.
I knew going into this episode...

While it doesn.t have the charm of the 1985 original, the remake of Fright Night is a CGI-slick horror romp that provides some laughs and even a few scares thanks to a menacing Colin Farrell. Directed by Craig Gillespie with writing chores handled by Marti Noxon (based on the original story written by Tom Holland), the film stars Anton Yelchin, Farrell, Toni Collette, David Tennant, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco, Reid Ewing, Will Denton, Sandra Vergara, and Emily Montague. It also features a great cameo by Fright Night's original vampire Chris Sarandon. Moving the setting to Las Vegas, the remake follows the basic plot of the original with awkward high school teenager Charlie Brewster (Yelchin) starting...

Synopsis: Charlie Brewster (William Ragsdale) is just a normal nerdy high school kid whose inconceivably less-nerdy girlfriend Amy (Amanda Bearse) wants to have sex with him. So, is the new Fright Night yet another terminal case of a charmless remake that nobody asked for, with the ever-abundant 3D tacked-on to boot? Thankfully not – well, the 3D thing isn’t too far wrong – for this retelling of the 1985 cult classic is a smart, effervescent take on the original film with plenty of wit, charm a viral sense of fun to offer off its own back.
The plot lifts the expected beats from the original; bored teenager Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) is living a quiet life with his single mother (Toni Collette) in a suburb of Las Vegas, though things have begun to look up recently as he somehow has managed to get with the girl of his dreams, Amy Peterson (Imogen Poots). However, the happiness doesn’t last for long, as his old friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), informs him of the families going missing in the local area,...

While being interviewed on FearNet, screenwriter Marti Noxon, who’s known for her teleplays for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, talked about a possible sequel to the Colin Farrell-starring Fright Night 3D.
“I think it all depends on how the film performs financially, unfortunately. We would love to do a sequel. Charlie Brewster and Peter Vincent as a team… there is great potential there. We have talked about ideas, but we didn’t want to get ahead of ourselves. On I Am Number Four we all got ahead of ourselves because the tracking on it was great. It did okay in theatres, but it wasn’t sequel-worthy. So we decided not to curse ourselves.”
She’s right, but all will now depend on the international box office, since the film is pretty much a bomb here domestically.

Fresh off the success of Fright Night, writer Marti Noxon is already tackling her next project. She reteams with Fright Night director Craig Gillespie for the long-awaited Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Based on the Seth Grahame-Smith novel which in turn is based on the Jane Austen novel, Ppz has faced its share of difficulties, including going through three directors and losing its star in less than a year's time. We chatted exclusively with Marti about what she is bringing to Ppz, and what her dream project is. I know Fright Night just opened, but has there been any talk of a sequel? I think it all depends on how the film performs financially, unfortunately. We would love to do a sequel. Charlie Brewster and...

New Fright Night Remake movie delivered lots of great thrills, action & more Dreamworks Pictures released their new horror flick "Fright Night" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out,and I thought it was way better than I originally thought it would be. Colin Farrell did a great job playing the evil vamp, and the plot was really intense. I wasn't expecting that. The movie stars: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, David Tennant, Imogen Poots, and Toni Collette. In the flick, Charlie Brewster's (Anton Yelchin) best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) tries to convince him that the guy next door named Jerry (Colin Farrell) is really a very dangerous vampire. Unfortunately, Charlie shuns him off,and tells him he needs to grow up.

“It is a back to basics season for Glee,” says Marti Noxon as I spoke to her via phone earlier this afternoon. “I can’t say much about this season but I am having a lot of fun right now in the writers room.”
Noxon is one the major editions to Glee’s development team this Fall even it is only a short stint and as someone who has experience writing for a heavy fanbase ala Buffy she believes that certainly is something that will impact her approach to this season.
“There is a lot of crossover between supernatural lovers and musical fans believe it or not. So I think my experience catering to a fanbase like surely helps when approaching things for Glee.”
I think and a lot of critics on Glee hope that Noxon will add the same kind of character development she did with Buffy to something like Glee.

In 1985, the original Fright Night was an odd hybrid, mixing modern (for its day) scares while tipping the hat to old Hammer-style scare flicks. It focused on a teen with a taste for horror films and a timid, late night TV host/scream movie idol who face off against a murderous vampire.
The new Fright Night, directed by Craig Gillespie, amplifies the action quotient, but shies away from homages, attempting to stay as modern as possible. It’s diverting enough and a decent piece of entertainment, but ultimately misses the heart of what made the original so compelling.
The remake is set in Nevada where life is good for high school student Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin). He’s popular, has a loving girlfriend named Amy (Imogen Poots) and has managed to ditch all associations to his nerdy past, including dorky friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). Though it’s coming to a close, summertime means a barrage of comic book movies, franchise sequels, and remakes. Some have been good, some have been bad, but we lived through the season, and I think we’ve grown as a species because of it. Fright Night may only be considered a classic by those that are already fans of the genre, this was made apparent to me, when the guy who tore my ticket stub at the midnight screening last night, who looked to be in his mid twenties, had no clue that the movie was a remake at all. The original, despite not being a universally acclaimed film, has more than earned it’s stripes as a certified cult classic. Personally, I don’t have nearly as strong of a connection to Fright Night as some of my friends do, but I do think it’s a fun movies,...

Photo: DreamWorks Pictures I saw the original Fright Night for the first time not too long before seeing this remake. I enjoyed the original enough to not dislike it, but it's a product of its time and seeing it 26 years after it first hit theaters without any prior attachment makes it feel incredibly dated. I would assume 26 years from now people will be saying the same thing about 2011's Fright Night as it too is a product of its time. Post converted into 3D, plenty of CG and another film forwarding the recent vampire craze, but pushing all that to the side, the one thing that will have anyone talking about this remake 26 years from now is the fact that it's not only a product of its time, but more importantly it's also quite fun.

The new Fright Night has two fairly large hurdles to clear. First, is the remake necessary? Second, was it necessary to make the film in 3-D?
As to the 3-D, other than the usual inane 3-D horror staple that pointy things will be thrust at the audience, the film does have one and a half genuinely interesting ideas about how to use 3-D. The full-fledged idea is that when vampires explode in sunlight, their ashes go everywhere, including into the audience. The half-idea comes at the beginning of the film when lens-flares of light protrude from the screen like spears, as though the film is reminding us, that against vampires, (sun)light is the ultimate weapon. I love, love, love David Tennant! The erstwhile Dr. Who rides his Tardis and appears in his first major Hollywood role in .Fright Night. (yes, he appeared in .Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. but it wasn.t a big role compared to .Fright Night.).
In the movie, Tennant takes over the Peter Vincent role that Roddy McDowall made famous in the original 1985 .Fright Night.. This time though, he.s not a late-night TV monster host but a magician wearing guyliner in the vein of Criss Angel.
It was an honor to talk to the Scottish actor even though it was just a satellite interview live from London. We talked about:
*** What attracted him to working on .Fright Night.
*** How he researched the role
*** Was he a fan of the original film?
*** Working with Colin Farrell
*** The enduring allure of vampires in pop-culture
Here you go, and have fun!

Review in a Hurry: Teen D-bag Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) fears his nerdy ex-friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) will reveal his own former nerd status. But there's a much nastier problem awaiting him than being a social outcast...Jerry the vampire has just moved in right next door. The original Fright was the Scream of its age—filled with very clever quips about horror movies and quite bit of blood. The new one? Half the humor, twice the gore. Still, casting Colin Farrell as the fanged one is a big win. The Bigger Picture: The best gag Fright Night 2.0 has is while real vampires are nowhere to be found, jerky dudes seem to be everywhere. They might be dressed in black, play sports or even be geeks,...

Those who consider themselves Fright Night purists should have known from the trailers that this film isn't a shot-for-shot remake. It does however, take the spirit of the 80's original and transplant it successfully into the twenty-first century. Again for the purists: this is Fright Night. We have Jerry the Vampire. We have Charlie Brewster. We have Peter Vincent and Evil Ed. This is basically the same story of a cat and mouse game between a teenage boy and his vampire neighbor. Once said teenage boy starts prying into vampire neighbor's business, s*** gets real and the body count starts rising. The film itself had a much better balance in action and story telling than what I remember from the original. Having said that, it doesn't make the remake better than the original but it does...

One man. One woman. Both fans of the original Fright Night. Two reviewers have stepped up to the plate to deliver their thoughts on the remake of the month. Both opinions are pretty damned different. Whose side will you be on?

As a fan of the original Fright Night film, I was a little apprehensive about seeing this remake. I know know there are people out there that didn’t care for the original film, but I use to watch it growing up, and even though it may not have stood the test of time for some people, for me it still holds that nostalgia awesomeness. That being said, the remake actually ended up being pretty entertaining, and it turned out to be a great film. It had a good mix of horror and comedy which is one of the main things I was worried about, but this new version is a bit more grounded in reality when it comes to the characters and emotions. I will say that the horror aspect of the film was a little bit more hardcore as well, and I liked that about it.
