Created by writer/director Aaron B. Koontz and writer Cameron Burns, the horror-comedy Scare Package was released on AMC Networks’ horror streaming platform Shudder in the summer of 2020. Scare Package is an anthology film that tells a series of blood-splattered, satirical horror stories from various directors, which are being recounted by Chad Buckley (Jeremy King), the owner of a video rental store called Rad Chad’s Horror Emporium. This year, Koontz and Burns have assembled a new team of directors for a sequel to Scare Package, the horror-comedy anthology Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge, which features the return of Chad Buckley, a character who feels like a combination of Joe Bob Briggs and Randy Meeks.

This week is not only the first week of winter, officially beginning on December 21st, but the week is also capped off by Christmas Day on Sunday, December 25th. As you might imagine, it’s not exactly going to be a big week for new movie releases, with James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water likely dominating any and all movie conversations these next several days.
And don’t forget that Tommy Wirkola’s Christmas genre movie Violent Night is also still playing in theaters through Christmas, the film thus far slaying its way to 55 million worldwide!
What about New genre movies for the week, you ask? Well, there are only four new ones remaining for the entire rest of the year, so let’s take a look at those in one fell swoop.
Here’s all the new horror arriving December 19 – December 31, 2022!

"You can't kill pure evil." Shudder has revealed an official trailer for the fun horror anthology feature Scare Package II: Rad Chad's Revenge, a sequel to first Scare Package series that opened in 2020. This next one is set to start streaming on Shudder later in December. When horror guru Rad Chad Buckley's funeral turns into an elaborate series of hilarious death traps based on his favorite scary films, the guests must band together and use the rules of horror to survive the bloody game. The full cast includes Jeremy King, Zoe Graham, Rich Sommer, Kelli Maroney, Shakira Ja'nai Paye, Graham Skipper, Maria Olsen, and Byron Brown. This looks much funnier than it does scary, though there's ton of crazy gore and blood to be disgusted by anyway. And if you haven't seen the original, maybe it's time for a double feature to enjoy both. ›››

"What would happen in a horror movie now?" Paper Street Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for an indie horror anthology film titled Scare Package. This premiered at the Sitges Film Festival last year, and also played at the Telluride Horror Show and FrightFest London. This new horror-comedy anthology with seven different stories "brings together some of the brightest rising stars in horror filmmaking today. This splatter-packed, deviously clever throwback pays homage to horror classics with seven hilarious, meta tales of terror, each exploring—and subverting—different genre tropes. All wrapped around every horror fan's beloved stomping grounds: an old school video store." Starring Noah Segan, Baron Vaughn, Chase Williamson, Jocelyn DeBoer, Jeremy King, Dustin Rhodes, Zoe Graham, Hawn Tran, Chelsey Grant, Jon Michael Simpson, Josephine McAdam, and more. Looks like some crazy good fun! Enjoy. Here's the official trailer (+ rad poster) for Paper Street Pictures' Scare Package, direct from YouTube: Seven directors.

Workplace comedies used to be all the rage in the independent film world. Clerks was the movie that launched 1000 others, after all. Recently, there hasn’t been much in the way of this genre. Now, however, we have a new one that stands tall with something to say. Opening this week, Support the Girls is a winner of a workplace comedy and character study. Filmmaker Andrew Bujalski has his most mainstream work yet, one that suggests the former mumblecore godfather may have a future attracting larger audiences. He has a singular view of the world, so that often leads to a smaller group interested in his work. Not this time though. This is a winner that everyone can easily enjoy. The film is a comedy, but one more concerned with the little moments that make up a day than just making you laugh. This is the synopsis that Magnolia put...

Foregoing the emotion at the core of Juan José Campanella’s Oscar-winning drama The Secret in Their Eyes, Billy Ray’s cold procedural remake (titled Secret in Their Eyes, evidently taking advice from Justin Timberlake’s Sean Parker) walks the walk, transplanting the story to a post-9/11 Los Angeles from 1970’s Argentina. The motivations are somewhat different this time around. Instead of writing a novel, Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) returns to his old stomping grounds to pay a visit to the one that got away: both his work crush Claire (Nicole Kidman) and a murder suspect whom he thinks he’s located.
The murder in question occurs adjacent to a mosque under surveillance by the joint counter terrorism task force. This partnership between the local FBI field office, in 2002, is led by a prosecutor with political ambition named Morales (Alfred Molina). The women raped and murdered is Carolyn Cobb (Zoe Graham...

The Secret In Their Eyes is a tightly-plotted murder-revenge thriller that unfolds in leisurely, satisfying detail, cramming a whole miniseries’ worth of events into its two-hour running time. A remake of the 2009 Oscar-winning Argentinian film of the same name (from a novel by Eduardo Sacheri), The Secret In Their Eyes is an old-fashioned movie-movie with an A-list cast that’s hardly groundbreaking, but engrossing and substantial enough to recommend
Jumping back and forth between 2002 and current day, The Secret In Their Eyes makes its way through several genres; equal parts murder mystery, adult romance, buddy cop movie, and a discourse on national security and the death penalty. The plot hinges on the murder of the teenage daughter of a federal investigator and a co-worker’s 13 year quest to find justice. Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as Ray, a La-based G-man in 2002 on post-9/11 counter-terrorism duty, assigned to investigate chatter at local mosques.

The word “remake” is a dirty word to critics, but it doesn’t always have to be the case. Once in a while, something even becomes an awards player, like when Martin Scorsese took Infernal Affairs, remade it as The Departed, and won the Oscar for Best Picture, along with his first Academy Award for Best Director. It doesn’t happen often, but it has happened. This week, another remake hoping to appeal to the Academy, namely the remake of The Secret in their Eyes (which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Feature, incidentally). This time just called Secret in their Eyes, it’s out on Friday and would love to be the next incarnation of The Departed… The film is, as previously mentioned, a remake of the Oscar winning original. It centers around the 13 year obsession over the murder of a government agent’s daughter. The agent, along with her former colleagues,...

Politics and procedure get in the way of justice in “Secret In Their Eyes,” a clunky and increasingly absurd Americanized adaptation of the 2009 Argentinean import (itself based on a 2005 novel) that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. Led by an all-star cast that still can’t make the material’s plot twists anything less than groan-worthy, this thriller from Billy Ray (writer of “The Hunger Games” and “Captain Phillips,” director of “Shattered Glass”) concerns the murder of a young teenage girl named Carolyn (Zoe Graham), who’s found one 2002 Los Angeles morning in a dumpster next to a mosque being watched by FBI agent Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) — officially part of the counter-terrorism team — and his partner Jess (Julia Roberts). When they arrive at the scene, they’re horrified to discover that the victim is Jess’ daughter. And worse still, that there are almost no clues (save for a...

'Father of the Bride': Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams. Top Five Father's Day Movies? From giant Gregory Peck to tyrant John Gielgud What would be the Top Five Father's Day movies ever made? Well, there have been countless films about fathers and/or featuring fathers of various sizes, shapes, and inclinations. In terms of quality, these range from the amusing – e.g., the 1950 version of Cheaper by the Dozen; the Oscar-nominated The Grandfather – to the nauseating – e.g., the 1950 version of Father of the Bride; its atrocious sequel, Father's Little Dividend. Although I'm unable to come up with the absolute Top Five Father's Day Movies – or rather, just plain Father Movies – ever made, below are the first five (actually six, including a remake) "quality" patriarch-centered films that come to mind. Now, the fathers portrayed in these films aren't all heroic, loving, and/or saintly paternal figures. Several are...

Boyhood is a blur. That’s intentional. The film is awe-inspiringly massive in scope, and the unceasing motor that drives it forward is forceful enough to flatten. Shot over 12 years, with director Richard Linklater filming scenes with the same young actor (Ellar Coltrane, sublime) for a few weeks annually, capturing a boy named Mason as he transforms from bright-eyed six-year-old into wearier but still hopeful 18-year-old, Boyhood is a singular masterpiece. Technically, it’s an astonishing feat, and narratively, it’s a daring experiment on which only one filmmaker would ever have taken a chance. It’s also a sprawling mess, a film in which scenes smash and splinter into other scenes, like magnificent waves crashing down one after another. Months or years pass in the blink of an eye.

Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last year’s crop of sixteen have almost all had their theatrical releases with Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter being the last one out of the gates (pegged with an early 2015 release). Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. You’ll find 2015′s answer to Whiplash located somewhere in the stack below. Click on the individual titles below, for the film’s profile.

Andrew Bujalski’s Computer Chess turned out to be the feel good film of Sundance and that’s not because the early gamers are particularly charming, but rather, better things come in small packages. Following Funny Ha Ha (2002), Mutual Appreciation (2005) and Beeswax (2009), this 30-something filmmaker, who in some circles is known as the godfather of the Mumblecore movement didn’t waste much time between the ’13 Sundance Film Fest Alfred Sloan Feature Film Prize winning micro-feature and his fifth, more macro-type budgeted ensemble project. Guy Pearce toplines alongside Cobie Smulders, Kevin Corrigan, Giovanni Ribisi, Brooklyn Decker, Anthony Michael Hall, SXSW Special Jury Prize Best Actor winner Tishuan Scott (The Retrieval) and Boyhood‘s Zoe Graham. Filming began in mid-summer on Results, and we’re assuming correctly by the first glimpse (see pic above) we got in September that this will bow in Park City with the director’s habitual stopover at SXSW.

I am nine years old. I am lying in the back of the 1977 Plymouth van my parents are driving. It is the middle of the night, and we are leaving Dunedin on the first leg of our move to Texas. I am crying. My best friend Oli Watt, my next-door neighbor, said goodbye to me earlier in the day, and we've made promises to write and call on the phone, but I know that I am leaving behind the life that I've enjoyed up to that point and that whatever comes next, it will be different, and I am afraid, and I am sad, and I am sure that nothing will ever be this good again. I am sixteen years old. I am lying in the back of the car driven by my nineteen year old girlfriend. It is the middle of the night, and while I'm supposed to be at school in the morning,...

Spike Jonze has finally released his 28-minute short film Scenes From the Suburbs which is available for free viewing on Mubi right now, and should also be available online via Playstation. The short is a collaboration with members of the recent Grammy winners Arcade Fire and will be featured in a deluxe edition of Arcade Fire’s album The Suburbs that includes a behind the scenes doc, some extra tracks and more.
The bad news is the short seems to only be available in the U.S. which is a shame considering the band emerged mostly from Montreal. Considering we reside in Montreal, we aren’t very happy about it.
Scenes From the Suburbs stars unknowns (Sienna Blau, Sam Dillon, Zoe Graham, Zeke Jarmon, Paul Pluymen and Ashlin Williams) and was described as follows in the Berlin festival program:
“I wish I could remember every little moment. But I can’t.

Spike Jonze has finally released his 28-minute short film 'Scenes From the Suburbs' online on Mubu. The film stars Sienna Blau, Sam Dillon, Zoe Graham, Zeke Jarmon, Paul Pluymen and Ashlin Williams and is collaboration with Arcade Fire with Win Butler and William Butler writing the film.
I wish I could remember every little moment. But I can’t. Why do I only remember the moments that I do. I wonder what happens to the others.” A group of suburban youths. Back then, in the summer, so long ago. They couldn’t leave town because outside the country was at war and the military controlled life and all gateways. The teenagers wander aimlessly about town. Winter is a long way off. And love and longing and friendship still mean – everything.
The short film will also be bundled in the 'Scenes From the Suburbs' album re-release.

Is it possible for a film to arrive at a time that’s emotionally inconvenient?
That’s the question I’m pondering as I sit here, having just watched Spike Jonze‘s collaboration with Arcade Fire, the short film Scenes from the Suburbs. This needs to be established upfront: I’m what you would call a younger fellow. As of this writing, in fact, I graduated from high school two days ago, and got back from two graduation parties right before I sat down and watched this. At said parties were a few of my best friends, some of whom I’ve known since I was five or six. In about two months, I’ll be going off to college, living somewhere different, and meeting new people.
I’ve recently been asking myself a question I don’t want to face: Am I going to see these people after I go away?...

Riding high off their Grammy win, and with a post-celebratory jaunt around the world this spring and summer, Arcade Fire show no signs of slowing down any time soon. And they still have more in store for their fans including the Spike Jonze-directed short film "Scenes From The Suburbs" which first appeared in an abbreviated form in the video for "The Suburbs." Starring a cast of unknowns including Sienna Blau, Sam Dillon, Zoe Graham, Zeke Jarmon, Paul Pluymen and Ashlin Williamson, the conceptual film is set in a no-too distant, war-ravaged America with the suburbs fenced off from the danger…...

We’ve been closely following the mysterious collaboration between Montreal’s Arcade Fire and director Spike Jonze, who recently shot a short titled Scenes, inspired by their album The Suburbs. Apart from the genre (Sci-Fi), nothing else was known about the project until now. According to the Guardian, Scenes (which will premiere at Germany’s Berlinale festival) is 28-minutes long, shot in colour, and stars newcomers Sienna Blau, Sam Dillon, Zoe Graham, Zeke Jarmon, Paul Pluymen and Ashlin Williamson. The band executive produced the project with their manager Scott Rodger and the film’s concept art was created by fellow Canadian Marcel Dzama, the acclaimed illustrator who directed the animated promo for Arcade Fire’s Madison Square Garden concerts last summer.

[1] It's a good week for Arcade Fire: Not only did they win the Grammy for Album of the Year last night, their Spike Jonze collaboration Scenes From the Suburbs will be premiering at the Berlin Film Festival on Wednesday. We reported [2] last year that Scenes would be a "science-fiction B-movie" about "friends growing apart." We've now learned additional details about the project. Hit the jump for more information, including the official synopsis. According to The Guardian [3] (via The Playlist [4]), Scenes clocks in at 28 minutes and stars unknowns Sienna Blau, Sam Dillon, Zoe Graham, Zeke Jarmon, Paul Pluymen and Ashlin Williams. Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler and his brother William Butler wrote the script, and their manager Scott Rodger served as executive producers. Illustrator Marcel Dzama, who created an animated promo for the band last year, is listed as a "concept artist." The film's synopsis from the Berlin Film Festival program reads,...

Even after their well-deserved, long overdue Album of the Year win at the Grammys last night for The Suburbs, Arcade Fire aren’t being slowed down by success. One of my most anticipated projects of the year, in any medium, is their Spike Jonze-directed short film Scenes from the Suburbs, which we saw a preview of back in November. We knew that it would be premiering at the Berlin Film Festival next week and SXSW in March, and even got a poster recently, but details on it have been relatively quiet. Now, a story in The Guardian (via ThePlaylist) tells us a lot more about not just the film, but also when we can expect to see it.
So, what about normal folks like us, who can’t attend either festival and want to see it desperately? Fear not, as it’ll be showing up on a re-release of...

Arcade Fire have revealed further details of Spike Jonze's new short film, inspired by their album The Suburbs. Scenes from the Suburbs not only features the indie rockers' music – the short was co-written by the band's Win and Will Butler.

After attending 2009 International Rome Film Festival, "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" actor Jamie Campbell Bower was seen spending some quality time along with his girlfriend Zoe Graham. On Friday afternoon, October 23, the lovebirds were photographed touring the Piazza di Spagna in the city.
Strolling down on a street, Jamie was snapped embracing Zoe. For several times, the couple was pictured enjoyably talking to each other. At that time, the depicter of Caius on the second "Twilight" film was spotted sporting a black coat matched with jeans and black shoes. Zoe, in the meantime, opted to don a white tank top paired with a black coat, jeans, and brown shoes. During the outing, both of them also wore sunglasses.
