The heat is back on this summer with the return of Eddie Murphy in his iconic role as Detroit police officer Axel Foley in the fourth installment, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. While Netflix has given us a sneak peek at the movie with a teaser trailer, we are now given a new look at previously unreleased footage from the Netflix film. Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff jokes about taking advice from Axel to apply in his own life as he transitioned from Los Angeles to Detroit. We are treated to some quick comedy bits that feature some R-rated language as well as some action clips of Eddie Murphy and co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a helicopter sequence.
Nearly thirty years after the release of the last movie, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will find Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) back on the beat in Beverly Hills. The official synopsis reads:...

For those who are unaware of Nicolas Cage’s Hollywood legacy, the actor once played himself in a 2022 movie – The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Although most actors play themselves when it comes to autobiographies or documentaries, Cage apparently played himself in a commercial film, alongside Pedro Pascal.

Two Saturday Night Live legends, Pete Davidson and Eddie Murphy, are joining forces for The Pickup, an upcoming comedy directed by Tim Story. The project hails from Amazon MGM Studios, with plot details remaining a mystery. Smoke on the street says The Pickup is a heist comedy with a script by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows.
In addition to his directorial duties, Story produces through his The Story Company banner, with Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox, and Murphy and Charisse Hewitt-Webster via Eddie Murphy Productions. The Story Company’s Vicky Mara Story, Davis Entertainment’s Jeremy Stein, and Kevin Burrows, Ross Fanger, and Matt Mider executive produce.
When he’s not the subject of paparazzi fodder or changing dating partners like fresh pairs of underwear, Davidson appears in films like Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Fast X, Dumb Money, and Good Burger 2. He recently completed his role for The Home.

Eddie Murphy is ready to have the last laugh as police lieutenant Axel Foley in the teaser trailer for Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
Hitting the streamer in the summer of 2024, the new movie from director Mark Molloy revives the action-comedy franchise three decades after the previous installment. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F stars Murphy as Detroit native Foley, who returns to Beverly Hills after the life of his daughter (Taylour Paige) is threatened.
The film sees Foley teaming with a new partner — played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt — while investigating a possible conspiracy and spending time with familiar faces including Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), John Taggart (John Ashton), Jeffrey Friedman (Paul Reiser) and Serge (Bronson Pinchot). Kevin Bacon is also part of the action as Captain Grant.
“Watch your ass out there, Ok?” Reiser warns Murphy, who responds, “I’m gonna be fine. They love me in Beverly Hills.

One cannot understate the impact Martin Brest's crime comedy "Beverly Hills Cop" had on popular culture when it was released in 1984. Between "Cop," the 1983 comedy "Trading Places," and Walter Hill's 1982 buddy film "48 Hrs.," Eddie Murphy was suddenly one of the largest and most striking movie stars in the world. His glib delivery and willingness to be crass rattled cinemas to an astonishing degree, and audiences began flocking to see Murphy in just about anything. Brest's film was made for a mere $13 million and would rack up about $316 million worldwide. It was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

The heat is back on next summer. Eddie Murphy can currently be seen in the new hit Christmas comedy on Prime Video, Candy Cane Lane. The family-friendly film reunites him with his Boomerang director, Reginald Hudlin. Next year, Murphy will be reuniting with Jerry Bruckheimer, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. While 48 Hrs. landed Murphy in Hollywood as an instant star, 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop catapulted him into the stratosphere as an A-list action-comedy star. After 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III was not received well by fans, development for a fourth was in the works for a while, and it is now about to hit screens. Netflix has unveiled new plot details and a teaser poster for the new Axel Foley adventure.

I admit I didn’t really notice Nicolas Cage (then billed as Nicola Coppola) in his debut, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but I quickly became a fan after seeing him in 1984’s underrated Racing with the Moon. Since then, he has made dozens of movies, across the genres, going from romantic lead to tortured lead to action lead and back again.
Despite making all of these films, earning numerous nominations and earning an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and numerous local critics’ awards, Cage has never quite gotten the respect his work deserves. Some of that is because of questionable career choices as well as an outsized public life that has garnered embarrassing headlines and unwanted notoriety.
Along the way, he has become a beloved cult performer, with many enjoying his low budget efforts and others rooting for him to regain his peak performance. With age and...

More often than not, good actors end up with a "bad" reputation because of their "less enjoyable" cinema projects, and the opposite is also possible, albeit in fewer numbers. The truth is that the general idea that literally all Hollywood celebrities live an above-average life without financial, personal, or family problems is somewhat misleading. Nicolas Cage is a perfect example of an incredibly talented actor who, due to the obstacles life confronted him with, was "forced" to participate in "smaller jobs" in order to solve complicated situations. Writer / director Tom Gormican's film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is the quintessential tribute to the iconic career of someone who has always managed to elevate films he's been in. Directed by Tom Gormican and written by Gormican and Kevin Etten, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent can be described using adjectives that flawlessly define Cage's filmography and qualities. It contains...

When Nicolas Cage agreed to play a rambunctious, self-absorbed version of himself in the Lionsgate comedy “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” the actor had plenty of opinions about his character should behave. However, none surprised director Tom Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten more than when Cage suggested he make out with a younger version of himself.
“I wouldn’t even have thought to suggest it,” Gormican said in an interview, “but it’s exactly the sort of Nicolas Cage choice that led us to write this movie.”
Among the many meta elements that “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” offers as it explores Cage’s attempt to retake control of his life, the movie concocts a younger version of the actor — whom he dubs “Nicky” — that goads the older Cage into reclaiming his wilder days. And in a key moment as Cage bickers with this living inner monologue, the pair actually lock lips.

Getting a major Hollywood star to be in your movie is never an easy task, but it’s doubly difficult when a role was specifically written for one actor. That was certainly the case with “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” which stars Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself.
The film was written by Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, who wrote the script before they ever met Nicolas Cage. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the two men shed light on the difficult process of shopping a script that only one actor could star in.
“We were told that Nick has done these projects before and he’s not wild about Nick as Nick,” Etten said. “And we weren’t two guys who had a huge body of work that you could point to and be like, ‘No, trust us.'”

While you may not remember when the stature of Nicolas Cage and his acting ability became the stuff of legend, rest assured it did and Tom Gormican’s film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent sets out to ensure that everyone recognizes how utterly fantastic Mr. Cage is.
The film follows actor Nicolas Cage as, facing an uncertain financial future and dwindling acting prospects, he is forced to accept a rather lucrative offer to appear at the birthday party of a wealthy fan played by Pedro Pascal. Intending to retire after the party appearance rids him of his debts, Cage finds himself recruited by CIA agents Vivan (Tiffany Haddish) and Martin (Ike Barinholtz) to provide intelligence on his superfan, whom they believe to be a notorious drug smuggler.

Much ado has been made about Nicolas Cage’s larger-than-life movies and acting panache. The Oscar winner— whose cinematic presence has endured throughout four decades — has headlined countless genres, including B movies-turned-cult classics (“Vampire’s Kiss”), action blockbusters (“Face/Off”), romantic comedies (“Moonstruck”), weighty dramas (“Leaving Las Vegas”), independent projects (“Pig”) and trippy indies (“Adaptation.”). It’s this versatility of character portrayals, varying degrees of flamboyant line delivery and an extraordinary off-screen persona that have transformed Cage into an unwitting walking, talking (and sometimes yelling) meme.
The memeification of Cage has in and of itself spurred a Cage-ification of pop culture, and that’s the foundation for Lionsgate’s “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” which stars Cage as his greatest character yet — himself. Rather, a fictionalized, off-the-wall and sometimes CGI-produced young version of himself.

Nicolas Cage plays a tongue-in-cheek version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a gleefully meta action comedy from co-writer / director Tom Gormican. Festival titles ‘Happening’ and ‘Playground’ are also new this week.
It is a fairly quiet week for openers at the UK-Ireland box office, with Lionsgate’s The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent the widest release, opening at 563 locations, and the chief contender for making a dent in the top five.
The action comedy sees Nicolas Cage – who is also a producer on the feature – play a fictionalised version of himself, with the actor teaming up with the CIA stop a Cage superfan who may also be the dangerous head of a cartel. Tom Gormican directs, and has co-written the screenplay with Kevin Etten.

When The Irishman innovated de-aging effects in 2019, few could have foreseen its use to resurrect the batshit, snake skinned Nicolas Cage of 1990’s Wild at Heart. Fewer still would have expected this iteration of Nicolas Cage to appear on screen next to… Nicolas Cage.Seeing the Nick Cage of 2022 argue, fight and even make out with his 26-year-old self are the most outrageous meta moments of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Tom Gormican’s smartly realised buddy film.
Now, Cage has long been one of Hollywood’s leading idiosyncrasies, building a lengthy filmography that ranges from the bargain bin to the Academy Awards. Yet this filmwould not have worked 10 years ago, even though it draws on his ‘90s blockbusters such as The Rock and Face/Off.

How much do you love Nicolas Cage? We have gone on record with our own Cage idolatry, of course, but it’s a question worth considering in regard to the original Valley Guy, the man who raised hell (and Arizona) and modeled snakeskin jackets, the onscreen consumer of live cockroaches, the Oscar-winning actor, the rider of ghosts and hater of bees — on a scale of one to “scraping at the doorrr!!!,” where does your unconditional worship rank?

It’s a mouthwatering prospect, the cinematic event of the year so far. Nicolas Cage plays Nicolas Cage. Not just the ultimate treat for his fans, but a must-see for any movie lover.
The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent sees the incomparable Cage as a version of himself with his acting career on the slide and his relationship with his daughter heading in the same direction. Encouraged by his agent, he takes on an unlikely sounding job –a guest appearance at a millionaire’s party – but soon finds himself embroiled in a plot that involves gangsters, kidnapping and the CIA.

When Nicolas Cage was first approached about playing a slightly-psychotic version of himself in the movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, he was more than a little hesitant about signing on for it. His fears only grew when he learned that the “Nicolas Cage” character in the movie would be near broke, living in a hotel, quasi-estranged from his wife and teenage daughter, and reduced to making a personal appearance at a birthday party for a wealthy fan in order to pay off his debt. There’s even a recurring bit where a manic,...

Nicolas Cage has transcended pop culture. The legendary actor has won an Oscar, starred in both blockbusters and indie titles, inspired internet memes and stolen the Declaration of Independence. Now, he’s being honored in the most Cage way possible, by starring as a version of himself, called Nick Cage, in the new Lionsgate movie “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.”
However, when Cage first got the pitch for the meta-comedy-drama-action film, his first response was “absolute horror.”
“There was no muscle in my body that told me I should play a character named Nick Cage, it was absolute horror,” he told Variety at the New York premiere on Sunday. “However, the director wrote me a very intelligent, sensitive letter, and in that letter I knew he was a true film enthusiast that likes some of the earlier work. He wanted to make a movie that was about people, not about caricatures or cartoons.

For many Nicolas Cage fans out there, a meta comedy centered around the iconic actor playing a cinematic version of his wildly unpredictable self alone would be enough of a reason to show up for Tom Gormican’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. But thankfully the director, who co-wrote the film’s script with Kevin Etten, delivers up so much more beyond this audaciously meme-worthy concept, resulting in a delightfully hilarious, action-fueled buddy movie of sorts that features an inspired self-portrayal by Cage and a wholly endearing performance from Pedro Pascal that not only deepened my total adoration for the actor in so many unexpected ways, but also demonstrated how Pascal is truly one of the most versatile performers working today.
Without a doubt, the Cage diehards out there are going to have a blast with Massive Talent, but I think the movie is charming and entertaining enough to...

This past weekend, the 2022 SXSW Film Festival hosted the world premiere of the meta genre-bending comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which was directed by Tom Gormican and co-written by Gormican and Kevin Etten. The story is set around the iconic cinematic phenom known as Nicolas Cage, who is down on his luck and decides to take a gig where he’s paid to show up at a superfan’s (played by Pedro Pascal) birthday party and ends up getting mixed up in some governmental espionage where things get just a little too “real” for Cage and his new best pal.
While in Austin, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Gormican and Etten following the premiere of Massive Talent about the unusual project and whether or not they ever thought about what would happen if Cage had turned down playing a version of himself for the film.

Thousands descended on downtown Austin last week for the return of a beloved festival, but nobody was having a better SXSW than Nicolas Cage. The actor came to town just long enough to bathe in a hero’s welcome: He starred in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” playing a fictionalized version of himself coming to grips with his rocky career, which received such extensive applause throughout its premiere at the Paramount Theater that it may as well have been a rock concert.
One Cage obsessive posted flyers around town begging the actor to call him, which he eventually did. Lionsgate paid a trio of performers to dress up in oversized Nicolas Cage costumes, and hosted a late-night after-party for the movie where his face was adorned on colorful sequin pillows. During the Q&a, festival director Janet Pierson awarded Cage with a rodeo champion belt dubbed the “40 Years of Massive Talent” award.

As unhinged as its muse, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a curious bit of fan service and perhaps a welcome evolution in the career of Nicolas Cage, who has been one of the more active leading men of late—an output that in some years stretches to six feature titles, some of which he’s served as a producer for. This film posits the theory that our man is broke, down on his luck, and in need of a comeback. Guided (or haunted) by Nicky––the clean-shaven younger version of himself that serves as the beast within––he finds himself seeking one massive hit to survive. He’s in troubled waters, divorcing wife Sally (Sharon Horgan), unable to relate to daughter Addy (Lily Sheen), and deep in debt from a lavish lifestyle. After a potential dream project that he pitches in grand Cagian fashion passes, his agent Richard...

Nicolas Cage is doing just fine.
The energetic actor, movie star, and meme muse is coming off one of the most lauded performances of his career in Michael Sarnoski’s Pig. Nicolas Cage’s sometimes over-the-top performances, complete with meme-worthy lifted brows and bulging eyeballs, are getting their own showcase. “People think I’m not in on the joke,” the headline of his 2013 Guardian profile reads. Lest there be any doubt, he’s now acted in and produced a feature-length film to prove his point.
Channeling the meta-ness of “Adaptation,” Cage stars in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” as a debt-ridden, washed-up actor named Nick Cage and as Nicky, his alter ego and a bad angel of sorts who appears to be 1980s-vintage Cage, here to facilitate internal dialogue. Depending on your taste, the idea of Nicolas Cage playing himself either sounds like a self-indulgent disaster or the most fun you’ve had at a movie in years. Fortunately, even the most Cage-ambivalent will have to admit “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” is solidly the latter. The meta-comedy sees the fictional movie star Nic Cage working with the CIA to solve a political kidnapping by the Spanish mafia, all while having a cinephile bromance with a mega-fan played by Pedro Pascal. Though movie references and Cage quotes abound, there’s something for everyone in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.” It’s .

Watching the new action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which Nicolas Cage plays a fictionalized version of, well, Nicolas Cage, I kept thinking that if director Tom Gormican didn’t get him to agree to do this film, which depends on audience recognition of a genuine action star, he could have easily gone to Mel Gibson or Bruce Willis. They would have been fine fulfilling the amusing premise, but Cage, as he usually does, goes all out, even over the top at times, and gives this the kind of sharp edge only he can. It also helps, since this is basically a comedy, that Cage’s manic timing really works in making the best lines in Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten’s script work, especially the inside industry jokes peppered throughout.

The SXSW Film Festival is returning to its in-person roots with a vengeance next month. After several years of going virtual due to the Covid-19 pandemic, SXSW will be the year’s first major festival and conference event to return its focus to live festivities when it launches from March 11 to March 20. And with Wednesday’s reveal of its full film line-up, what a significant return that will be.
