How does the Alien: Covenant 'prequel' novel fill in bits of the story? And does it work?
Be warned, spoilers ahead for both Alien: Covenant and Origins.

Author Alan Dean Foster will be a familiar name to Alien fans, having penned the well-regarded novelisations of the first three movies, in addition to his prolific output of original and tie-in novels. Foster stepped away from the series after a bad experience on the Alien 3 novel, where producers rejected several additions he attempted to add, such as Newt being kept alive but remaining in a coma in her damaged hypersleep pod throughout the story.

Director Ridley Scott and Katherine Waterston (Daniels) on the set of Alien: Covenant
Alien: Covenant opened in theaters this past weekend and brought in an estimated $36 million at the box office.
Fox’s film enjoyed a solid global debut performance as the Ridley Scott directed film that is the second of the prequel series and the sixth Alien feature film in the franchise earned $66.3 million globally.
In space, no one can hear you scream. After nearly four decades, those words remain synonymous with the sheer, relentless intensity of Ridley Scott’s masterpiece of futuristic horror, Alien. Now, the father of the iconic franchise returns once more to the world he created to explore its darkest corners with Alien: Covenant, a pulse-pounding new adventure that pushes the boundaries of R-rated terror.
The films timeline line up as such:
Engineers create humanity. Archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw and Charles Holloway discover humanity’s origins...

Join us as we take an in-depth look at the commonalities across all 7 films of the Alien franchise as we prepare for the release of Alien: Covenant later this week.
What makes a movie franchise a franchise and not just a collection of similar films? Commonalities.
Sometimes it’s just a character by himself that makes it a franchise (Tarzan). At other times a common theme (Final Destination). Sometimes films of a franchise will share a common style if they are all made by the same filmmakers (Jason Bourne), or expand on a singular story (Star Wars). For others, it's a gimmick or hook (Home Alone), or a premise (Planet of the Apes).
The Alien franchise doesn’t necessarily fit into any of these categories; although it has featured all of these traits at one time or another. It started in 1979 with the release of Alien, a sequel came seven years later in Aliens,...

Alien and Aliens are classics. But how do the other sequels, prequel and spin-offs compare? We try to rank them in descending order...
Ranking any franchise is a personal and difficult process, but the Alien series represents its own challenges. Were you more affected by the intimate shocks of the 1979 original, or the more action-led 1986 sequel? Were you impressed by Alien 3's commitment to its bleak tone, or irked by its soupy darkness?
You're sure to have your own opinions as to how the Alien movies should be ranked, though we'd wager that, like us, you'd place the Alien Vs Predator spin-offs quite far down the list. But then there's Ridley Scott's prequel, Prometheus, a film some might rank far above Jean-Pierre Jeunet's quirky Alien Resurrection, and perhaps even David Fincher's Alien 3.
Accepting, then, that the ranking below is very much down to personal taste,...

Is director Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" a full-on prequel to his 1979 sci-fi horror masterpiece "Alien" or not?
That's the question movie fans have been asking for months and we're going to answer it for you, once and for all. The answer, friends, is yes ... basically.
Scott has been adamant that while "Prometheus" "carries the DNA" of "Alien," it is an original piece of science fiction that delves into everything from biotechnology to artificial intelligence to the origins (and possible destruction) of mankind itself.
Those are lofty goals for a summer movie about the title spaceship star trekking to a hostile planet, but we're gonna walk you through the evidence that this is indeed an "Alien" prequel no matter how look at it. As Michael Fassbender's David says, "Big things have small beginnings."

You've all seen "The Avengers" by now, right? If you haven't, time to turn away. We're delving into spoiler territory with this post, covering one of our very favorite characters from the movie, reliable S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and comic book fanboy Agent Phil Coulson. He's got a big role to play in "Avengers," and we're getting into that in depth beyond the break.
So, final word of warning: spoilers ahead!
Still with us? Cool. Agent Coulson's death is easily the saddest aspect of "The Avengers," removing one of our favorite Marvel movie universe players from the board for good. Or is he gone for good? One of our favorite theories is that Coulson will provide the basis for Vision in a future film (more on that below as well as in future posts). Another good theory is that we'll see a life model decoy of Coulson in future Marvel movies.

As the June release date approaches, we're gradually learning more about Prometheus, while tantalisingly not really learning anything at all. Guy Pearce has said that his role is a small one, but we didn't yet know what that role actually was. Now though, thanks to a Hungarian interview with Ridley Scott picked up by the Alien fansite Apn, we learn that he's playing a certain Peter Weyland. That surname is one that should be familiar if you've been paying attention to the Alien films thus far: Weyland-Yutani is the shady mega-corporation responsible for the xenomorph outbreak in the first place. Paul Resier's odious Carter Burke was one of their executives in Aliens, and Lance Henriksen played company founder Charles Bishop Weyland in Alien vs Predator (the model for the Bishop androids we meet later)."When the first Alien movie and Blade Runner were made," says Ridley, "I thought that in...

"Not bad for a human." Do you recognize that voice on the Verizon Droid commercials? That is the voice of a badass. That is the voice of Lance Henriksen. And "Not bad for a human" is not only one of the more memorable lines ever delivered by the man, whose career has spanned a veritable library of film, it's also the name of his biography. And a full biography it is.
Henriksen landed his first movie role in 1961 (that's 50 years ago, folks; can you say longevity?). He played the role of a Us Marine in the Tony Curtis film The Outsider. He was uncredited in the movie and only got the part because he was working as a set designer on the project at the time. Now, five decades later, he has amassed an amazing body of work that spans well over 100 films, a couple dozen television shows and numerous voice-over appearances.
