The 2023 Emmy Awards finally took place on Monday night, with series like The Bear, Beef and Succession winning big.
The ceremony, hosted by Anthony Anderson and held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, was postponed for months due to the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes. Thus, to be considered for an award, a television show, limited series or made-for-tv film must have been released between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023.
The National Active Members of the Television Academy voted on the awards from August 18 to August 28, 2023.
Succession walked away with seven wins for its final season, including Best Drama and recognition for actors Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen. The show also received awards for Best Directing for a Drama Series for Mark Mylod and Best Writing for a Drama Series for Jesse Armstrong.

On one hand, you had the dynamic Danny Sharp in Michael Bay’s Ambulance, but on the other hand was his brother Will Sharp, who had his own story. Without the yin-yang of the two characters, the film wouldn’t be the least bit emotionally engaging. If Danny was like a volatile robber with a streak of childlike enthusiasm, Will was a family man with a strong sense of ethical boundaries. He was willing to cross them for his family, but it had its limits. The performance by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is sincere. He isn’t as good as Gyllenhaal, but considering he has been around for just about five years in the industry as compared to Gyllenhaal, who has mastered his craft over 25 years, Yahya manages to go toe-to-toe with him, trying to make every scene work. Let’s take a closer look at his character.

There is not too much depth in Michael Bay’s characters. They act more like devices in his universe, which is brought to us through interesting yet absurd camera movements, prolonged action sequences, and an overall chaotic environment. What Bay hopes for, I think, is that before you can evaluate whether you are actually engaged or not in the story, the jarring soundtrack and the action sequences will have managed to suck you in. He isn’t totally wrong. The slick camera moves are engaging, but they have never made a movie memorable single-handedly. It’s the characters and the story that do that, and Bay just doesn’t seem to care about all that stuff, to put it bluntly. Yet, in Ambulance, he has tried to make the most of Jake Gyllenhaal’s charisma to create a layered character, even though his backstory is presented through nothing more than...

This year’s Emmy nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards were released on Wednesday morning.
The Emmys live-streamed the announcement on their official website where Frank Scherma, Television Academy Chair, and actress Yvette Nicole Brown presented the nominations.
Scherma started the live stream off by introducing himself and the Emmys. “And what a great way to recognize the importance of the writers and performers and all those who created such phenomenal work over the past season,” he said.
His speech referenced the writer’s strike that is currently plaguing the film and TV industry.
“We hope the ongoing guild negotiations can come to an equitable and swift resolution. We are committed to supporting a television industry that stands strong in equity and where we can continue to honor all the incredible work you do.”
Brown added, “Nothing makes me happier than celebrating other people and their big day.”

Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Eiza González, Garret Dillahunt, Jackson White, Moses Ingram, Keir O’Donnell | Written by Chris Fedak | Directed by Michael Bay
Remaking a foreign language movie might seem like an unusual step for master-of-mayhem Michael Bay, but that’s what’s happened with his latest movie Ambulance, which is based on the 2005 Danish thriller Ambulancen. In fairness, Bay’s idea of a remake is basically just to make it an hour longer and add explosions, so it’s pretty much business as usual, comprising 136 minutes of action and chaos.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays former soldier Will Sharp, who’s struggling to pay the mounting medical bills for his wife’s (Moses Ingram) upcoming operation. In desperation, he turns to his ne’er-do-well brother, Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal), who somewhat implausibly recruits him for a 32 million heist that’s happening in about thirty minutes’ time.
Will reluctantly agrees, but the heist goes sideways,...
