The Last of Us is expanding its Season 2 cast, adding Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick), Ariela Barer (How To Blow Up a Pipeline), Tati Gabrielle (You) and Spencer Lord (Riverdale).
Based on Naughty Dog’s video game, The Last of Us takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. Ramirez will play Manny, a loyal soldier whose sunny outlook belies the pain of old wounds and a fear that he will fail his friends when they need him most.
Barer portrays Mel., a young doctor whose commitment to saving lives is challenged by the realities of war and tribalism.

Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg recently said that he’ll be returning to the horror genre with his next feature, which would be an expansion of a couple short films he previously made. Now we’ll have to wait and see if that actually does turn out to be his next feature, because The Hollywood Reporter has just broken the news that Sandberg is re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn! Well, either way, we’re getting a new horror movie from Sandberg.
The Hollywood Reporter notes, first released in 2015, Until Dawn is an interactive horror video game that follows eight friends and frenemies who are brought together a remote mountain retreat. David F. Sandberg, known for “Annabelle: Creation,” “Shazam!” and “Lights Out,” will direct the film adaptation of the PlayStation horror video game “Until Dawn” by Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions.
“It: Chapter Two” and “The Nun” screenwriter Gary Dauberman is doing the most recent pass on a script from “The Invitation” writer Blair Butler. The plot for the film is under wraps but is said to be an “R-rated and terrifying love letter to the horror genre.”
The PlayStation video game centers on eight friends trapped together on a remote mountain retreat — only to discover they are not alone. They must navigate dread and fear to make it through the night in one piece. The video game, which starred Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere in motion-capture versions, was named in Variety’s 2021 list of games that deserve movie adaptations.

When showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin were gearing up to go into production on the first season of the HBO series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us, there was a lot of talk about – and fan support for the idea of – Kaitlyn Dever from Booksmart and No One Will Save You playing the Ellie character. Dever even participated in a table read for the show… but she didn’t end up being in it. Now Druckmann and Mazin are preparing for The Last of Us season 2, which is (according to Production List) expected to start filming in Vancouver, Canada on January 7, 2024. For this season, they’ll have to find someone to play the Abby Anderson character from the video game The Last of Us Part II. And industry scooper Jeff Sneider hears that they’re circling back to Dever for this role.

Following news that the Writers’ Guild of America and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have reached a tentative deal, Hollywood is starting to prepare for its comeback. While some productions were in the midst of filming when the WGA strike happened, others were in the early planning stages — like “The Last of Us” Season 2.
“Very proud of the WGA and its membership, and excited to get back to work on The Last of Us Season 2,” showrunner Craig Mazin wrote on Threads Monday. “The strike has not yet been officially lifted, but the second it is, we will spring into action!”
In a follow-up post, the writer clarified that Season 2 is still in preproduction, and writing will resume on the HBO drama series.
“I hope to have an update for start of filming before too long,” Mazin added.

Although season 2 of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here) isn’t expected to start airing until sometime in 2025, the actors thought they would start filming the new episodes relatively soon – possibly even by the end of this year. But then the WGA and SAG strikes hit, and the longer they go on, the more a 2023 start date seems very unlikely. With that said, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have both told Entertainment Weekly that The Last of Us season 2 is ready to go as soon as the strikes end.
Mazin said, “We were able to map out all of season 2. And I also wrote and submitted the script for the first episode and sent it in [to HBO] around 10:30 or 10:40 p.m. right before the midnight [makes a “kajoomph” sound] and the strike began. … I think it’s becoming essentially a near...

“The idea [of the show] was to give a backstory to that game as you know it and the characters and make you appreciate that world more,” executive producer Carter Swan says. The first season of Twisted Metal, an action comedy based on the PlayStation game series about an outsider offered a chance at a better life if he delivers a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland, builds to a car tournament; John Doe (Anthony Mackie) finds out he’s been enlisted by Raven (Neve Campbell) to participate at the end of the finale. As a result, the show spends time with John and Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz), revealing their backstory through flashbacks. “It’s something that’s not really in the game — it’s sort of something you read in the game — but we actually wanted to show it and show you where these people all really came from and how they came together,...

HBO’s adaptation of “The Last of Us” scratched the surface on the video-game franchise’s massive world – which will continue to unfold when the drama series eventually returns for its second season.
But outside of Joel and Ellie’s main narrative, which co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have previously said could span across multiple seasons, the pair have not had discussions about the potential for spin-offs that could further expand on the world’s other characters.
“We haven’t talked about that specifically because we’re so focused on just telling this main narrative. I’m not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world,” Mazin told TheWrap in an interview in accordance with WGA guidelines and facilitated through his personal publicist. “I don’t know how much more ‘The Last of Us’ I personally would be able to do. After a concerning lead-up to the show’s release, Sony‘s Twisted Metal is doing donuts around audience expectations! The car combat-oriented comedy series is Peacock’s “most-binged” comedy premiere, with the average account watching roughly three episodes per sitting, with some opting to knock the entire season out in one glorious shot. The Twisted Metal Peacock premiere is an outstanding sign for Sony’s future adaptations of popular gaming properties.
While NBCUniversal neglected to share the number of people tuning in for Twisted Metal, it stands to share similar success to Bel Air, The Best Man: Final Chapters, Poker Face, and Based on a True Story as one of Peacock’s top five original series. Peacock has released a trailer for its forthcoming series Twisted Metal — two of them, actually, one of which is billed as a “clean version” and bleeps out a number of profanities.
But if you’re interested in a series based on the Twisted Metal video game series, a few curse words probably aren’t going to be an issue.
The trailer offers a much larger look at the series, which stars Anthony Mackie as delivery driver John Doe, than an earlier teaser did. John sets the scene with voiceover narration: “Twenty years ago, the world fell to shit. Cities put up walls to protect themselves and threw the criminals out to fight over what was left.”
John is hired (by guest star Neve Campbell’s character) to pick up and deliver a package to New San Francisco. Along the way, he takes on a passenger (Stephanie Beatriz) — who hitches a...

Fresh off the $1 billion-plus success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the next big-deal video game adaptation has dropped its first trailer and poster. Rather than attempt to make a workable fictional narrative from a series of racing video games, the filmmakers have opted to adapt a true story connected to the games.
The film, penned by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, and helmed by “District 11” director Neil Blomkamp, is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe in the film) whose video game skills won a series of Nissan competitions and allowed him a shot at being an actual race car driver. “From Gamer to Racer,” the tagline states and it’s an interesting narrative that would be intriguing even sans the IP surrounding it.

Ready, set, race.
The PlayStation video game franchise “Gran Turismo” inspired the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough, a young teenager who began a racing career. Now, director Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”) is bringing that story to the big screen.
“Gran Turismo” stars Archie Madekwe as the aforementioned teen who aspires to become a professional race car driver with the help of his trainer (David Harbour) and a motorsport marketing executive (Orlando Bloom). Djimon Hounsou portrays Mardenborough’s father, while Darren Barnet plays a Gt Academy driver threatened by his new opponent.
“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski was originally set to helm the feature in 2015. Also that same year, Blomkamp was attached to a fifth “Alien” film starring Sigourney Weaver.

The first trailer for director Neil Blomkamp’s “Gran Turismo,” adapted from the popular PlayStation video game racing franchise, has been released.
Blomkamp, whose notable directing credits include “District 9” and “Elysium,” departs from his typical science fiction subject matter to take on the sports racing film. Based on a true story, “Gran Turismo” follows a young teenager who’s obsessed with playing the racing video game and gradually takes his controller skills onto a real racetrack with hopes to become a professional race car driver.
