Searchlight Pictures’ Poor Things from Yorgos Lanthimos earned a stellar $72K per-screen average opening weekend at nine theaters in four markets, for an estimated three-day total of $644K. In a competitive season, this marks the fall’s best limited opening on ten or fewer screens and is in the year’s top three.
The big two for 2023 were heavy hitters Asteroid City by Wes Anderson, from Focus Features, which had a $100k+ PSA in six theaters in June; and A24’s Beau Is Afraid by Ari Aster that took in $80K per screen last spring at four locations. Both had notable activations like Focus’ takeover of the Landmark Sunset, and Beau starting out on Imax. For Poor Things, Lanthimos and the film’s stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef have been doing sold out Q&As around NYC over the weekend.

Last Friday, which happened to be a Friday the 13th, screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift shared some pages from the script they wrote for the unmade sequel to the 2009 version of Friday the 13th (watch it Here). In those pages, we got to read the description of a scene where a character would have been killed by iconic masked slasher Jason Voorhees while riding down a zip line. But those weren’t the only pages Shannon and Swift shared from the script last Friday. They also unveiled a couple pages that reveal what happened to Jason’s dad – and you can read them in this embed:
Ok, since it's #FridayThe13th how about one more? Our sequel script had lots of stuff for long time fans, including returning characters! Let's reveal two of them now: https://t.co/WhNTVuo2Nx pic.twitter.com/yUdnv2L6bL

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift were the writers who cracked the Freddy vs. Jason story and pulled that project out of development hell, where it had been trapped for a decade. Six years later, when Warner Bros. teamed up with Paramount and Platinum Dunes for a Friday the 13th reboot, Shannon and Swift were again the writers. (You can hear all about that Friday the 13th in our latest Wtf Happened video.) Since the reboot made over $91 million at the global box office on a budget of $19 million when it was released in February of 2009, it was no surprise when it was announced that it was going to receive a sequel, to be shot in 3-D and released on August 13, 2010. Then the studios couldn’t agree on the money split, so the sequel was shelved… but not before Shannon and Swift had already written the full script. Today, to celebrate Friday the 13th,...

With its gloriously over-the-top dialogue and otherworldly visuals, the Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending certainly earned its moniker of “space opera.” What looks to be the filmmaking duo’s final feature (at least for the time being) is getting a second life on the stage, but rather than in opera form, it’s been adapted as a new ballet.
Designed and choreographed by Pacific Northwest Ballet company dancer Kyle Davis, the production is titled A Dark and Lonely Space, and was specifically inspired by Michael Giacchino’s score. “The Wachowskis have epic ideas and characters who traverse large landscapes and seek all kinds of adventures that aren’t really bound to the linear world,” Giacchino said. “The idea of having Kyle Davis choreograph dance pieces to the movements that were inspired by their work is another way to explore those grand themes. It’s gratifying to have the music take on another art form.

Pacific Northwest Ballet will premiere a new work with music by film composer Michael Giacchino on Nov. 2 at Seattle Opera House’s McCaw Hall.

Giacchino, an Oscar winner for “Up” and an Emmy winner for “Lost,” said the ballet will feature five dramatic movements drawn from his music for The Wachowskis’ 2015 space opera “Jupiter Ascending.”

The star of the Child’S Play films, Chucky stands fifteen inches tall and features real cloth Good Guys clothing, eleven points of articulation, his trademark orange hair and realistic glass-like eyes.

Ahead of our exclusive preview screening of Into The Storm next week (win tickets here) we have an exclusive Q&A with two of the stars of the movie, Jon Reep and Kyle Davis. How did you become involved with this project? Jon Reep: Well, just got an audition, and I went in for the audition. And I cried. Which was a good thing at the time, because there was a scene, which unfortunately didn't make it into the film, where our characters are running from the storm. We go hide into a bank. And we go under this desk, and we're praying for our lives. We're praying to God-- it was a real moment with God. And we were just bawling. And then got the part based on that. And then they cut that part out. Kyle Davis: And honestly, same audition. I went in there, had...

Chicago – Early incarnations of “Godzilla,” for example, were so memorable because of the characters and its story. The “special effects” were laughable, but the films caught on despite it because they had heart.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Fast forward to today when the reverse tends to happen. Many films overprioritize their special effects but forget to begin from a quality script and craft memorable characters. Without starting there, all you’ve got is an exotic Lamborghini on the outside with a lawnmower engine failing to chug it along. Though Hollywood is currently addicted to eye candy, special effects should be a complement rather than a replacement.
“Into the Storm” is directed by Steven Quale. We’ve only seen him in the director’s chair once before at the helm of “Final Destination 5,” but he also served as a visual effects supervisor on “Avatar.” “Into the Storm” opens with a tense and well-executed introductory scene,...

Jon Reep and Kyle Davis play tornado chasers in New disaster film "Into the Storm." But they're not after storms with cameras for science or the safety of others. They're just backwoods "Jackass" type dudes who want to be famous on YouTube. And they'd like to stay intoxicated if they can. Yeah, they're the guys you just wait to be sucked up into a twister and perish due to their own stupidity. Reep and Davis were pretty good at it, too. But the comic actors have done far scarier stuff in life than survive a throng of wind machines. "Being a stand-up comic, the first time... I didn't get very many laughs," Reep admitted. "People laughed at me for sucking so hard." But, hey, "it counts." Watch the rest of our Nsfw interview about fear and a warning from Davis to be careful out there. In 1996 producer Steven Spielberg and director Jan de Bont jump-started the Summer box office (May 10, that’s still Spring, for goodness sake!) with the release of the thriller Twister (not based on the classic Milton Bradley game, of course). The film was a big hit and sparked a brief revival in the major studio disaster flicks similar to the Irwin Allen-produced crowd-pleasers of the 1970′s. Movie technology has advanced by leaps and bounds since then, and now mass-destruction is at the fingertips of most film makers, really just a few computer keyboard clicks away. The superheroes and giant robots have been trashing towns and cities long enough, it’s time for Mother Nature to strut her stuff once more. That may be part of the thought behind the new film Into The Storm, which has its roots in that almost 20 year-old flick and the proliferation of the basic cable...

It's not often the main characters in a movie are not played by the actors. I'd say it's even less frequent the main characters aren't even the special effects. That being said, I think Into the Storm may be the first film I've ever seen where the main characters are the cameras and yet, I still have a hard time calling this a found footage film, but the cameras are certainly the closest thing to actors you'll find in this travesty as CG thunder clouds and tornadoes make up the rest of the running time. In an era where made for TV movies such as this have found their place on the SyFy channel with the likes of Sharknado and Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda it's somewhat amazing to think a studio would even consider spending the additional money to beef up the effects and put it on the big screen. Watching...

Last year in Oklahoma a famous father-and-son team of storm chasers were heard screaming, “We’re going to die! We’re going to die!” on a Highway Patrol radio moments before they were indeed killed by one of the savage twisters they’d devoted their lives to following.
Storm chasers are single-minded in their pursuit of danger, willing to risk all for the thrill of the hunt, and in the new movie Into the Storm, Matt Walsh plays just such a character. He’s Pete, a TV reality star who endangers his crew when one of the biggest storms of all time hits the rural town of Silverton.
While the subject matter is serious, behind the scenes Walsh was dealing with a comedy of errors he couldn’t help but laugh at. In the film his fortress on wheels is Titus, a storm-proof tank that can roll its way through anything.

Jon Reep and Kyle Davis portray a couple of good ole. boys who are trying to find YouTube fame in their latest feature Into The Storm. Both actors are so damn good as Reevis and Donk that it is almost shocking to realize they are nothing like their on-screen personas. From New Line Cinema, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, comes the tornado disaster film Into The Storm. Steven Quale (“Final Destination 5”) directs the film, which is produced by Todd Garner (“Zookeeper,” “Knight and Day”).
In the span of a single day, the town of Silverton is ravaged by an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes. The entire town is at the mercy of the erratic and deadly cyclones, even as storm trackers predict the worst is yet to come. Most people seek shelter, while others run towards the vortex, testing how far a storm chaser will go for that once-in-a-lifetime shot.
Told through the eyes and lenses of professional storm chasers, thrill-seeking amateurs, and courageous townspeople, Into The Storm throws you directly into the eye of the storm to experience Mother Nature at her most extreme.

The latest trailer for the upcoming movie Into the Storm shows the terrifying and devastating effects of tornados. I'm glad I don't live in an area that is subject to these monstrous tornados. The movie looks incredibly intense, and I have to see it. We haven't seen a decent tornado movie since Twister, and l don't care what anyone says, I loved Twister. And No! Sharknado doesn't count. This looks like it will be an entertaining popcorn flick.
The movie was directed by Steven Quale (Avatar - second unit), and it stars Richard Armitage (The Hobbit) and Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead). The story focuses on a small town that is hit by one of the most chaotic storms ever. Here's a more detailed synopsis:

The film opens in theaters, and also finds VOD on October 30th. In 2010 “Skinwalker Ranch” gained media attention after experiencing a wide range of unexplained phenomena. Reports ranged from UFO sightings to livestock mutilation, but maybe most notable was the disappearance of ranch owner Hoyt Miller’s eight year old son, Cody on November 11, 2010. Close to a year later, Modern Defense Enterprises (Mde) has sent a team of experts to document and investigates the mysterious occurrences, which only escalate upon their arrival.
