Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort Channel has partnered with Paul Fusco, the creator of the hit ’80s sitcom “Alf,” to create new content starring the wisecracking alien. The show, which aired from 1986 to 1990, starred the titular character Alf, or “Alien Life Form,” as he lives with a human family in suburbia.
Maximum Effort and Fusco have revived Alf, along with Shout! Studios, to premiere new sponsor-driven content premiering Saturday, July 29. Advertising messages will be interegrated throughout “Alf” episodes for various companies including Mint Mobile, Fubo, Hims, Mntn and Ring. Dubbed “Maximum Moments,” this sponsored content will feature new storylines featuring Alf.
“At Maximum Effort, we love taking risks and blurring the lines between shows and sponsorship because we believe both can be equally entertaining,” Reynolds said. Both “Maximum Moments” and “Alf” episodes can be viewed starting July 29 on Maximum Effort Channel, which is available to watch on Fubo, Amazon Freevee, LG Channels,...

The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) were the big winners at last night's Directors Guild of America's DGA Awards. The filmmaking duo took home the top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, for "Everything Everywhere All At Once" — beating out directing legend Steven Spielberg ("The Fabelmans"), as well as Joseph Kosinski's massive aerial action film "Maverick," Todd Field's critical darling "Tár," and Martin McDonagh's black comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin."
These days, the Daniels seem to embody their hit film, being everything, everywhere, all at once. The Michelle Yeoh-led maximalist action-comedy has something for everyone, and is deeply, satisfyingly, weird. It topped many best-of lists (it was my #1 pick for Best Films of 2022) and is a favorite to take home the Academy Award for Best Picture. Now with a DGA Award under their belts, the odds of that happening are better than ever.

With less than a month to go before the Oscars, every award show counts. The next few weeks will see all of the major Hollywood guilds give out their annual awards, ensuring that each department gets its moment in the spotlight. Tonight, directors took center stage as Hollywood convened at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the Directors Guild of America Awards.
The ceremony honored outstanding achievement in both film and television directing, and the former category is often seen as predicting the Best Director winner at the Academy Awards. Four of the five Best Director nominees competed in the Feature Film category tonight: Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Todd Field (“TÁR”), and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund is not nominated, with “Top Gun: Maverick” helmer Joseph Kosinski taking his place.

The Directors Guild of America announced the nominees for television, commercials and documentary for its 75th annual DGA Awards today, a list headed by previous winners Ben Stiller and Vince Gilligan, three-time nominee Jason Bateman and Tim Burton, who shockingly hadn’t previously been nominated by the DGA.
Those directors vying for TV Drama Series honors include Bateman (for an episode of Netflix’s “Ozark”), Gilligan (for an installment of AMC’s “Better Call Saul”), Stiller (for an episode of Apple TV+’s “Severance”), Aoife McArdle (also “Severance”) and Sam Levinson (an episode of HBO’s “Euphoria”). Competing for TV Comedy Series are Burton (for an episode of Netflix’s “Wednesday”), Bill Hader (HBO’s “Barry”), Amy Sherman-Palladino (now a four-time nominee for Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christopher Storer (Hulu’s “The Bear”) and Mike White (HBO’s “The White Lotus”).

2022, we aren't quite done with you yet. Award season has officially rolled into town, meaning it's time to reflect on the highest highs of last year as the industry awards (or snubs) some of the most beloved titles across film and TV. The latest awards lineup comes courtesy of the Directors Guild of America, which today announced the nominees across seven television categories.
Last year, the DGA television awards were largely dominated by "Succession" — as was every other TV-based awards show. But in its absence, both new and old titles have stepped up to vie for the spotlight. For drama series, the nominations went to Jason Bateman ("Ozark"), Vince Gilligan, ("Better Call Saul"), Sam Levinson, ("Euphoria"), Aoife McArdle ("Severance"), and Ben Stiller ("Severance").
Elsewhere, the DGAs are rightfully recognizing two of last year's best half-hours of television: the intense single-shot episode of "The Bear" and the impeccable sixth episode of "Barry" season 3. Hilariously,...

The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominations in its television categories, with several new series, including “Wednesday,” “Severance,” and “The Bear” receiving nominations alongside returning series such as “Ozark,” “Better Call Saul” and “The White Lotus”
At last year’s DGA television awards, “Succession” dominated the drama series category with all five of the nominees. This year, with that HBO series on hiatus, the nominees went to Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Vince Gilligan (“Better Call Saul”), Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”), and Aoiff McArdle and Ben Stiller for two separate episodes of “Severance.”
In the comedy series category, Tim Burton scored his first ever career DGA nomination, for “Wednesday.” Burton was joined by Bill Hader (“Barry”), Amy Sherman-Palladino (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christopher Storer (“The Bear”), and Mike White (“The White Lotus”).

Patton Oswalt is, admittedly, hard to pin down. He’s an actor for hire, a writer for comics, a narrator of sitcoms. But at his core, Oswalt is a stand-up comic.
On Sept. 20, he’ll release his fourth hour for Netflix, which he’s titled We All Scream. He serves as both an executive producer, along with David Rath, Neal Marshall and Marcus Raboy, as well as the special’s director, a role he’s new to and particularly proud of. In fact, Oswalt now puts directing other Hollywood projects at the top of his professional bucket list.
The hour, which he filmed at the Paramount Theatre in Denver, Co., touches on everything from aging to the pandemic. The setting, per Oswalt, was less about geography than it was about where his Denver stop fell during the tour. He’s also keen on...

Whitney Cummings is bringing the jokes. “Whitney Cummings: Jokes,” the comedian’s fifth special — and her first self-funded one — will premiere July 26 on Netflix.
Cummings described this stand-up special as “more nostalgic and emotionally cozy: no politics, no lecturing, no self- indulgence.”
“As media is getting more and more fractured, I like the challenge of going, ‘How do I appeal to everybody?’” Cummings told Variety. “I’m still interested in what unites all of us and what we all have in common. Comedians, we’re so masochistic. The idea of trying to find something we can all agree on right now is probably a psychotic mission. But just with how acrimonious everything feels, how apocalyptic the vibe feels online, you only get the news that you want to see, you only see the opinions that you’ve signed up to follow… On my podcast I’m very interested in the...

The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.
Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.
Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”
See DGA Awards: Alfonso Cuaron all but certain to win key Oscar precursor
On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

Comedy series creators dominate this year’s roster of Directors Guild of America TV awards nominees. Donald Glover is contending for an episode in the sophomore season of “Atlanta,” which also reaped a bid for Hiro Murai. Both Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino vie for installments in the second edition of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” And Bill Hader is nominated for the pilot of “Barry.”
Among the TV drama helmers is Adam McKay for an episode of “Succession.” He could well be a nominee for his film “Vice” as well. He contends here against “Ozark” star Jason Bateman, long-time “Homeland” helmer Lesli Linka Glatter, Chris Long for “The Americans” series finale and Daina Reid for a second season episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
On the telefilm/limited series side, Barry Levinson made it a lucky 13 DGA nominations with his bid for “Paterno.” He faces off against Cary Joji Fukunaga...

The Director’s Guild of America gave its stamp of approval to a number of actors-turned-directors Monday afternoon, nominating a slew of famous faces for its 2019 DGA Awards.
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Sacha Baron Cohen (“Who Is America?”), and Ben Stiller (“Escape at Dannemora”) all landed their first DGA nominations, while Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) scored his second nomination for the series.
“Atlanta” was one of a few projects scoring multiple nominations, as Hiro Murai was also selected for his work on “Teddy Perkins” (IndieWire’s pick for the best TV episode of 2019). Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman-Palladino were both nominated for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and three directors were honored from “A Series of Unfortunate Events”: Barry Sonnenfeld, Bo Welch, and Allan Arkush were all chosen in the Children’s Programs category.

The Emmys are unfolding at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Calif., with “Game of Thrones,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “SNL” leading the pack of nominations.
“SNL” co-head writers — and Emmy nominees themselves — Michael Che and Colin Jost are hosting the 70th annual awards show.
Variety‘s final predictions show Elisabeth Moss and “The Handmaid’s Tale” as strong contenders in their respective categories, with “The Americans” a dark horse candidate across several categories. With “Veep” ineligible for competition, the best comedy series race has finally opened up with “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” the likely champ. “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace” is also a key player in the limited series or movie realm.

Steve Martin and Martin Short may have promised “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life” in a tongue-in-cheek expectation management effort, but the longtime friends’ Netflix special proved particularly memorable to Emmy voters, who — much to the surprise of the comedy icons — bestowed it with four nominations.
The quartet of nods — for variety special (pre-recorded), variety special writing, music & lyrics, all for Martin and Short, and variety special directing for helmer Marcus Raboy — is a pleasing validation for the duo, both of whom claimed Emmys early in the TV-centric portions of their careers: Martin as part of the taboo-smashing writing staff of “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” in 1969; Short as one of the all-star writers on “Sctv” in 1983.
For Martin and Short — who famously became close while shooting the 1986 film “Three Amigos” and subsequently shared the screen in two “Father of the Bride” films — the Emmy...

Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming Steve Martin and Martin Short comedy special, Steve Martin and Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest Of Your Life.
Steve Martin is one of my favorite comedians of all time. His style of comedy is timeless and I've always found him to be so damn funny. He's unlike any other comedian out there and he's one hell of an entertainer. It's so cool to see that he's teamed up with Martin Short, who I also think is great, to do a show together. I really enjoyed what I saw in this first trailer and I'm looking forward to watching the special! I know this style of comedy isn't for everyone, but I grew up with it, so I enjoy it.
Martin and Short filmed the special at the Peace Center in Greenville, South Carolina while on their ongoing national tour.

I am a huge fan of Steve Martin. He's one of my all-time favorite comedians so I was excited to learn that he has teamed up with Martin Short to give us a comedy special on Netflix. The special is being called Steve Martin and Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest Of Your Life.
I know Martin and Short's comedy style isn't for everyone, but I love how wacky and wild they get! What I like most about them is that their comedy is timeless. Martin released a video on Twitter that you can watch below in which they amusingly announce the show.
Martin and Short filmed the special at the Peace Center in Greenville, South Carolina while on their ongoing national tour. So for fans who aren’t able to see the two comedians live, they have this feature to look forward to and more.

Avril Lavigne is a good girl gone bad in a music video supporting her new single "What the Hell". "All my life I've been good but now, I'm thinking what the hell," so she decides. Having that plan to go "a little crazy", she wakes up one day, leaving her boyfriend and running away in a stolen cab to spend "some time to play."
But the guy refuses to give her up. "[He's] chasing me around, and I hop into a random cab, and he's chasing me," she told MTV of the Marcus Raboy-directed clip. "And I go through a clothing store and he chases me, but at the end of the video, it's really just me having a bunch of fun with him, and he's my boyfriend, so I like him in the end."

Cube has his headliner.
Rapper Young Jeezy will play the hip-hop artist at the center of writer-actor-producer Ice Cube's forthcoming comedy "Janky Promoters," about a pair of shady concert promoters in over their heads. Marcus Raboy ("Friday After Next") is directing the Dimension Films comedy, which is already shooting, and Cube Vision partner Matt Alvarez is producing.
Jeezy, in his first film role, joins Mike Epps and Terry Crews in Cube's first screenplay since "Friday After Next."
The multiplatinum rap star is working on the release of his third album, "The Recession," through Cte/Def Jam.

It might not be Friday, but the fellas are hanging out anyway.
Marcus Raboy is set to direct Janky Promoters, the latest comedy from writer-actor-producer Ice Cube. Mike Epps and Terry Crews also have joined the cast. All four are alumni of the 2002 comedy Friday After Next, which Raboy directed and Cube wrote and starred in with Epps and Crews.
Cube Vision partner Matt Alvarez also will produce.
Janky follows the shenanigans of a pair of shady concert promoters (Cube and Epps), self-described "Modesto's finest", who get in over their heads when they get a shot at booking a big-name hip-hop act (an actual rapper whose deal was closing Tuesday). Complications come in the form of a pot-growing neighborhood nemesis named Mondo and Cube's character's son (Nickelodeon star Little JJ), who is under contract with the old man.
Shooting begins Monday in Sherman Oaks, though the movie is set in Modesto, Calif., and takes place in a single day.
"It's Cube going back to his roots as a writer and an actor," Raboy said.

Marcus Raboy has signed on to direct Whitebread for New Line Cinema. Whitebread tells the fish-out-of-water story of a wealthy white teenager who, in order to avoid losing his inheritance, is forced to join his grandfather's blue-blood fraternity -- only to discover it has become all black. Raboy, repped by WMA, directed Friday After Next for the studio and made his name directing music videos for the likes of Naughty By Nature, Ice Cube, Mary J. Blige and Santana. That experience will prove handy since the world the filmmakers plan to create is music-oriented and will include "stepping," a type of dance practiced by black fraternities. "It's how they express the unity and bond of brotherhood," Raboy said. "We've seen a lot of frat movies, but not like this. No one has really explored this world." Peter Cohen wrote the initial draft of the script; Rob Lieber wrote the latest. Producing are New Redemption Pictures' John Herzfeld along with Deacon Entertainment's Damon Lee. Urban Entertainment's Michael Jenkinson is executive producing. Mark Kaufman, Matt Moore and Luke Ryan are overseeing for New Line.
