Singer, songwriter ("Careless", "A Million Dreams Ago"), conductor,
composer and guitarist, educated at San Jose State College and at
Stanford University's medical school. He appeared in a number of hotels
and night clubs, and sang with the Dick Jurgens dance band, finally leading
his own band in 1941, with which he made many records. He was the lead
performer, singer and conductor on the NBC Radio series "Carton of
Cheer". Joining ASCAP in 1941, his other popular-song compositions
include "My Last Goodbye", "If I Knew Then", "Now I Lay Me Down to
Dream", "Something Old - Something New", "For Sale", "With Love",
"Lonesome Tonight", "Lynn", and "So Long For Now". He was unable to
sight-read music, which was discovered by a fellow band member at a
rehearsal.
