The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the fourth and final time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 26, to discuss eligibility of 12 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
The productions discussed were: “The Wiz,” “Suffs,” “Stereophonic,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Cabaret,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “Patriots,” “Mary Jane,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Illinoise,” “Mother Play,” and “The Great Gatsby.”
The most impactful decision of this announcement is the determination that both Steve Carell and William Jackson Harper will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of “Uncle Vanya.” Most prognosticators assumed that Harper would contend in the Featured Actor race. This category switch means that Lead Actor in a Play will have a guaranteed five nominees. Conversely, Anika Noni Rose was not bumped up to the Lead Actress in a Play category, so that race will contain just four guaranteed nominees...

In many ways, the role of Mary Jane, the single mother at the center of Amy Herzog’s compassionate play Mary Jane, was made for Rachel McAdams.
The actress’ most notable characters include an acid-tongued high-school student (Mean Girls), a lovesick Southern belle (The Notebook) and a tireless investigative reporter (Spotlight), but last year she delivered a quietly moving performance in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, which marked a new turn in her understated style.
In Kelly Fremon Craig’s adaptation of Judy Blume’s novel, McAdams breathed new life into Margaret’s mother Barbara, a woman estranged from her conservative family after marrying a Jewish man (Benny Safdie). The actress’ best scenes are the hushed ones, moments in which her character, enveloped by the quiet of an empty house, releases the tension in her shoulders and indulges in her anxieties and uncertainties. Not only must Barbara...

Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. If you haven’t heard, it’s a massive season on Broadway, with a dozen shows opening in the next few weeks before the Tonys’ eligibility cutoff date (April 25).
There’s plenty of new NYC shows fighting for your attention, and also plenty of A-list actors trying to make their mark.
Just this month, Rachel McAdams will make her Broadway debut in the play “Mary Jane,” and Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne will take on the iconic role of the Emcee in a “Cabaret” revival on the Great White Way. (He recently played the dynamic role on the West End in London.) Daniel Radcliffe, Jeremy Strong, and Zoe Kazan are all currently doing great work as well, and are smart bets to get their first Tony nominations when those are announced April 30, 2024.
Read on for all the stars on Broadway this season — including Steve Carell, Jessica Lange, and more.

The Tony Award nominations are set to take place April 30, and in the lead-up, the month is jam-packed with Broadway openings, with 14 taking place over the course of 11 days.
While the days before the Tony Awards eligibility cutoff, on April 25, are typically filled with openings, many industry insiders are optimistic that this year’s rush spells somewhat of a return to normalcy. But with the influx of shows and changing audience makeup, producers are also anxious about making sure their shows stand out to ticket-buyers and can make it to the Tony Awards ceremony on June 16 and beyond.
“It largely feels very exciting. For the first time in a while, it really feels like we are back to pre-pandemic levels of volume,” says Greg Nobile, producer of several shows on Broadway this season, including the new musicals Lempicka and Illinoise and the play revival of An Enemy of the People.

He calls that production “an experiment” because the show touched “such an open nerve” when it premiered right in the wake of the pandemic. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“The Notebook” is adapted from the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, which also inspired a successful film 20 years ago. Vasquez shares that he actually “saw the movie in theaters way back in 2004,” explaining that he was a “huge fan of Rachel McAdams,...

Despite having a number of iconic characters in his bag, Ken just might have one of the most career-defining moments in Ryan Gosling’s career. And thus, it is not that easy to leave that behind. Barbie not only was one of the movies that took the world by storm but also the box office, all thanks to the directorial greatness of Greta Gerwig. Although already known as somewhat of an icon, after Barbie’s billion-dollar success, her name has now been cemented.
And as Gosling moves forward from Barbie and joins forces with the Oppenheimer star, Emily Blunt, it turns out he still can’t quite leave the Gerwig magic behind. Blunt recently revealed that her character in The Fall Guys was based on the Barbie director.

The Notebook is seen in Hollywood as a timeless love story. But guess what? Behind the scenes, things weren’t all roses and butterflies. Turns out, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling didn’t exactly get along. While both stars were playing lovebirds on screen, they were more like oil and water off-screen. Crazy, right?

“It is a pretty great crop of plays this year, several that have become big commercial hits,” declares Sam Eckmann about the many dramas and revivals in contention for nominations at the 77th Tony Awards. Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, John Hawkes and newcomer Kali Reis all shine in this acclaimed edition of the franchise, which we predict will compete in all the major categories at this year’s Emmys. Even though The Notebook opened in theaters in 2004 and is nearly 20 years old, Noah and Allie’s touching and heartbreaking love story still tugs at our heartstrings. The film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel evoked a range of emotions, including a complex love triangle, and, of course, intense feelings for Ryan Gosling. Helmed by Nick Cassavetes, the film’s remarkable cast and poignant narrative seem to be contributing to its increasing popularity over time. However, James Marsden, a significant actor in the film, was initially skeptical of its chances of succeeding.

To say The Notebook had a devoted, built-in audience before it sang so much as a note on Broadway would be an understatement this romantic tear-jerker never attempts.
Based on Nicholas Sparks’ 1996 bestseller about a young – then older, then much older – couple who survives a lifetime of tribulations (until they don’t), the musical opening tonight at the Schoenfeld Theatre is the theatrical equivalent of muzak, comforting in its unapologetically manipulative way and unabashed in its disregard for anything approaching the grit of the real world.
The reference to muzak, by the way, isn’t meant to suggest that composer Ingrid Michaelson looks back quite that far for her musical inspirations. She has a lovely way with a melody, even if so many of the songs...

Broadway adaptations of beloved movies are nothing new — and in fact will be increasing like never before this season with “Water for Elephants,” “The Outsiders,” “The Great Gatsby,” and more musical adaptations opening just in the next month.
It’s such a thrill, then, that “The Notebook” musical, based on the Nicholas Sparks book of the same name — which of course was also turned into the beloved movie starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams — is such a romantic, weepy success, managing to honor the tale fans know while also sneaking in a savvier story, one that doesn’t look away from the horrors of dementia but retains the beautiful message of everlasting love.
The book, by Bekah Brunstetter, begins with a few smart updates: The earliest action between Younger Noah (John Cardoza) and Allie (Jordan Tyson) is moved from the WWII-era of the film to Vietnam-era, which Noah and friends get tangled up in,...

“Time, time, time, time, it never was mine, mine, mine, mine,” sings the elderly Noah Calhoun (Dorian Harewood) in the opening number of The Notebook, the new Broadway musical with a gossamer score by indie-pop singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson. “But you know what is?/Love, hope, breath, and dreams/As cliché as that seems.”
Cliché is at the heart of The Notebook’s appeal, from Nicholas Sparks’s 1996 novel to the 2004 film starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling as destined lovers Allie and Noah. “You are every reason, every hope, and every dream I ever had,” Sparks banally wrote in the novel. “Every day we are together is the greatest day of my life.” Though Michaelson alludes, with seeming self-awareness, to the platitudes of the source material in that opening song, this production never quite transcends the clichés that it conflictingly both seeks to challenge and embrace.

With the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, several actors showed up at the Oscars wearing a red lapel pin. As per Rami Yousef, the pin signified their support for calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and the safe return of captives in the war-torn city!

It was back in October when several artists collectively signed a letter asking President Joe Biden to ceasefire immediately in Gaza and release all the captives held in the city. Calls for peace and humanity were all around and were even further fueled by the involvement of several artists.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences doesn't always get it right. Actually, you can count on them to just about never get it right.
This is especially true of the lead acting categories, where voters often become prisoners of the moment and vote for the buzziest and/or showiest performance. This is how Al Pacino's chilling depiction of Michael Corleone's descent into pure, dead-eyed evil in "The Godfather Part II" gets passed over in favor of Art Carney's amiable portrayal of a lonely old man hitting the road with his pet cat in "Harry and Tonto." This results in overdue Oscars, which frequently create new injustices — like Denzel Washington's bravura turn as Malcolm X losing to Al Pacino's ceaseless hoo-hahing in "Scent of a Woman," which led to Washington getting his Best Actor trophy for his (admittedly entertaining) grandstanding work in "Training Day" (which cost...

Get the scoop on what inspired the new musical Mean Girls remake that hit cinemas earlier this year.
The original 2004 Mean Girls, which starred Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, is a stone-cold classic of the teen comedy genre. It’s nearly universally beloved. So, many were surely skeptical when a musical remake was announced as they pondered whether it could recapture the glory of the '04 film.
Upon hitting theaters, the Mean Girls remake failed to live up to those lofty hopes that it would match the Lohan-fronted source material. It earned a somewhat decent $104 million on a $36 million budget and critical reactions were mixed. (Read about the entire cast of 2024’s Mean Girls here.)

Mean Girls remains one of the most iconic teen movies, and that’s partly down to the all-around perfect casting choices that were made behind the scenes. Can you even imagine what it would have been like if the lineup of talent had been different!?
Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfied and Lacey Chabert grounded the movie as members of The Plastics – teen royalty of North Shore High School.
They were joined by other talented young actors such as Jonathan Bennett, Daniel Franzese and Lizzy Caplan alongside comedy legends Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
In 2024, the cast is forever associated with the characters that they played in the movie. However, Mean Girls almost looked very different.
For starters, all three members of The Plastics auditioned for other parts in the movie before they were finally cast. Several other actresses were also in the running for parts, and an A-list actor...

Countless actresses auditioned for Mean Girls, and Ashley Tisdale was one of them.
The High School Musical breakout stopped by Watch What Happens Live! on Monday, where she was asked by a fan if it was true she auditioned for the role of Karen Smith in the hit 2004 film.
“Gosh, it was so long ago,” Tisdale said. “I just remember screen-testing, and it was me and Blake Lively and someone else. But yeah, I screen-tested. That was like, eons ago, obviously.”
Amanda Seyfried eventually went on to portray Karen, and the film marked the Emmy-winning actress’ biggest role at the time. Shortly after, Tisdale landed The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and then High School Musical. Lively starred in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants before landing the lead role in Gossip Girl.
During her appearance on the late night show, Tisdale also recounted her audition for Mean Girls.

The original Mean Girls movie is confirmed for a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release in the UK: more on it here.
Heading to over $100m at the global box office, the 2024 take on Mean Girls – the film that’s a musical that wasn’t promoted as such – has been a solid hit for Paramount Pictures. Not bad at all for a film that was originally intended for Paramount+, and got upgraded to a theatrical release.
Still, it’s the original that remains the standout, the 2004 film starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Tina Fey. Mark Waters directed the movie, and it’s – if you’ve not had the pleasure – one of the standout teen movies of its particular decade.
What’s more, it’s also coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time as well, with a new UK release just confirmed.

Since he made his Hollywood debut in the 2000 Vietnam War drama "Tigerland," Colin Farrell's career has had some downs and some ups. All in all, though, he's largely outgrown his 2000s playboy reputation and is deservedly recognized as one of the best movie stars we've got. Farrell's got the eloquent soul of an artist, the way only an Irishman does.
After Farrell's earlier and fruitless efforts to be an action hero, he's learned to not let his occasional franchise gigs distract him from more personal work. Not all his work is on film either. In 2024, he'll be returning to television with two crime drama roles.
He plays Oz Cobblepot in the Max series "Penguin," spinning out of his supporting role in 2022's "The Batman." Before he returns onscreen as the Penguin, though, he's going to star in (and executive produce) "Sugar" for competing streaming service Apple TV+.

World-renowned director Steven Spielberg was at the height of his career when he made the Oscar-winning film "Schindler's List," but he wasn't the only filmmaker who was interested in adapting the novel of the same name for the silver screen. The acclaimed director Billy Wilder, an auteur of classic Hollywood cinema who penned and directed such renowned films as "The Apartment" and "Sunset Boulevard," was also vying for the rights to turn this story into a movie. However, by the time Thomas Keneally's evocative historical novel was published in 1993, Wilder's career was already winding down.
For a long time, Wilder enjoyed one of the most prosperous careers in Hollywood. His Oscar-nominated 1944 film "Double Indemnity" is considered the signal film of noir cinema and the model of the femme fatale trope. After Wilder's smashing success "Sunset Boulevard" earned three Oscars in 1951, he quickly went on to release several star vehicles...
