The scope of this slice of wartime history is so small, it’s almost the movie equivalent of a one-man show. There are perhaps only a dozen speaking roles. Brian Cox is impressive as The Man Who Saved England in its Darkest Hour, but the drama reduces both the man and the historical crisis to trivial status, as little more than a personal emotional crisis: “Winston, the Haunted Imperialist.”

By any semblance of conventional narrative logic, the third season finale of Rectify should have been the end of the series, period. Though it didn't resolve every one of the show's outstanding questions — chief among them whether Daniel Holden (Aden Young) actually committed the murder of his high school girlfriend Hannah, for which he spent two decades on Death Row before being released due to new DNA evidence — it sent Daniel away from his mother Janet's home in Georgia to a halfway house in Nashville to begin the next phase of his life, and it left the rest of his family in a place where they seemed ready to start healing after his unexpected return from prison tore all their lives asunder. In a traditional drama, the shot of Daniel saying goodbye to Janet (J. Smith-Cameron) and closing the door of the halfway house would have been the last we ever saw of him,...

Monday night’s premiere of Timeless, the time-hopping NBC drama from creators Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield), was grand and clearly expensive. (How about that Hindenburg?) But was it enough to make you want to revisit the past again?
Before you chime in with your thoughts, a recap of the pilot: After ex-nsa asset Garcia Flynn (ER‘s Goran Višnjić) steals a time machine, Homeland Security recruits history professor Lucy (Suits‘ Abigail Spencer), scientist Rufus (Better Off Ted‘s Malcolm Barrett) and Delta Force soldier Wyatt (Star-Crossed‘s Matt Lanter) to stop him — in the past. All time travel stories are gibberish — and I say this as someone who has spent a lot of my life reading, watching, and enjoying stories about time travel. No matter how thoroughly the rules of traveling to the past or future have been laid out and explained to the audience, they never fully make sense, never entirely manage to duck under the question of paradox, and will always make your brain hurt if you try to think about it too hard. The climax of the Jim Caviezel/Dennis Quaid movie Frequency(*), to name one, falls apart halfway through, because Quaid does something to the bad guy in the past that would certainly prevent him from being in front of Caviezel in the present(**). (*) Frequency is, conveniently for this review, being turned into a TV show, debuting Wednesday night at 9 on the CW. I enjoyed the pilot — which gender flips the...

“For better or worse, and in this case worse, this is real history,” professor Lucy Preston (Abigail Spencer) informs her class in the opening minutes of Timeless. She’s giving a lecture on Lyndon B. Johnson, and his obsession with his own genitalia, way before the time travel shenanigans ensue in NBC’s new crack at a serialized sci-fi adventure, and her words feel simultaneously appropriate to 2016 and a decent summation of Timeless as a whole.
For better or worse, and in this case mostly better, the show works. Co-creators Eric Kripke (Revolution, Supernatural) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield) navigate the tricky waters of a time travel serial with snappy aplomb, managing to avoid getting bogged down in thinking-about-it-too-hard minutiae, but economy shuns creativity at most plot turns. Back to the Future had some fun with Marty’s frequent exclamation, “This is heavy!” Earlier this year, 11.22.63 got some laughs from James Franco’s character telling a veteran in 1960 that, yes, he served “in the Medical Corps, M*A*S*H 4077.” Now Timeless is supplying the comedy with its own anachronistic language and references as the new time travel series transports its heroes from 2016 to 1937. If you have your countdown set for Timeless’ premiere on October 3, here’s another peek at the new series to tide you over until then. HitFix has an exclusive “first look” featurette that not only includes the starring cast chatting about their characters but also reveals another amusing moment from the pilot when Abigail Spencer’s character saves her ragtag team’s cover with some quick thinking and a shout-out to a certain rapper. Check out the featurette below: Who to turn to in dire situations whilst time traveling?...

While most of us were spending our Monday mornings shoveling the remnants of Storm Jonas off our driveways, Kitty Spencer was ringing in the new week in a decidedly more glamorous fashion. October 27 has been a day long pegged on the calendar for Xbox One fans, as it marks the long-anticipated arrival of 343 Industries’ Halo 5: Guardians. It’s a launch that marks an “important milestone” in the console’s lifecycle, according to Xbox Boss Phil Spencer, though had Bonnie Ross not taken the reins of the decorated sci-fi franchise, things could have been very different indeed.
In the wake of Bungie parting ways with the IP – when the studio would go on to create Destiny – the general attitude at Microsoft was negative, with Ross noting that the Redmond-based giant saw an end in sight for the shooter series after one or two more entires. Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg, the current Studio Head at 343 recalled her efforts to reinvigorate the Halo franchise, along with her George Lucas-like approach to managing the property.

Beyoncé promises a no-holds-barred look at her life. But who needs an HBO subscription when you have a blog and Google?
Beyonce's Life is But a Dream premieres on HBO on Saturday. The documentary will show the charmed life of one of the world's most recognizable celebrities.
But why do we need a documentary? Since Beyoncé is a woman who spends about 98% of her time in front of a camera – but who doesn't really tell us much about herself at all – we can make some very educated guesses about how exactly this documentary will play out. Save yourselves a $60 HBO subscription and read this outline:
Act I: Destiny's Favorite Child
Enter Tina Knowles, stage mom
Célestine Ann Beyincé, aka Tina Knowles, aka mother of Beyoncé and her decidedly not-favorite child Solange, gained notoriety in the 1990s as a ruthless "momager" and creator of some of the worst stage costumes ever stitched.

Chicago – The 2010-11 season was a very interesting one for network television. After a few years of undeniable failure, most of the networks found at least one new notable hit. Fox is building an entire night of comedy around Emmy-nominated breakout “New Girl.” ABC is ecstatic over the loyal followings for “Revenge” & “Once Upon a Time” (and “Suburgatory” has the potential to truly breakout in its sophomore season). NBC looks a little more dire but is willing to give “Up All Night” and “Whitney” second chances. And CBS’ “2 Broke Girls” looks like it could be on for a decade. It was a solid crop all around. The good news? This season looks even more promising when one looks at the very top of my annual top ten list of the most promising new shows.
