“So hungry was I to realize my own powers, I hardly even chewed.”
We’ve all grown up hearing the classic fairytale. A brother and sister are turned out of their home and sent by their wicked stepmother to survive in the deep, dark woods. The ingenious Hansel leaves a trail of pebbles and breadcrumbs to find the way home, but they eventually fall into the clutches of a sinister witch. While Gretel does get credit for pushing the old witch into the oven before she can roast and eat Hansel, most of the story’s heroism still falls on male shoulders. But what if Gretel was actually the one responsible for the sibling’s survival? What if it’s her courage and fortitude that saves the day while her brother is little more than a burden? Oz Perkins’s nightmarish film turns the classic fairy tale on its head...

‘The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin’ – Episode Guide (When Will the New Episodes Air?)
Get ready for a whacky and flashy ride with a bumbling Dick Turpin. Created by Claire Downes, Ian Jarvis, and Stuart Lane, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin is a British historical comedy series that takes its inspiration from a real-life highwayman of the same name in the 18th century. The Apple TV+ series follows the story of Dick Turpin, who leaves everything behind to become the leader of a group of goofy highwaymen accidentally.
The comedy series isn’t a grounded story in any way, as it takes many leaps into the immensely absurd. So, if you are ready for this completely made-up adventure, then here is a map for the upcoming adventures.

"'Historically accurate' is subjective." Apple TV has unveiled a funny promo featurette for the wacky British comedy series The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, launching streaming to watch on March 1st (this weekend!!). Noel Fielding stars Dick Turpin, the most dangerous highway robber of the 18th century. It's based on a true story. Sort of. This comedy series is a fictional take on the life of highway robber Dick Turpin – originally Richard Turpin, an English highwayman whose exploits were romanticised following his execution in York for horse theft. By the early 1730s, he had joined a gang of deer thieves and, later, became a poacher, burglar, horse thief and killer. This is his story. Though it's all made up, at least most of it is, and some of it isn't. Co-starring alongside Fielding in the ensemble cast: Ellie White, Marc Wootton, Duayne Boachie, Hugh Bonneville, Tamsin Greig, Asim Chaudhry,...

What would it take for you to believe that your partner has been compromised by a foreign power? Muttered Russian words in their sleep? A stash of secret documents under the floorboards? These are the questions posed in Netflix’s new conspiracy thriller, Treason, which finds Charlie Cox at the reins of MI6 but under the spotlight of both the CIA and his wife.
Adam Lawrence (Cox) becomes the new C, head of the Secret Intelligence Service, after his predecessor (Ciarán Hinds) is poisoned in a London private members’ club. “Your whole career has been building up to this,” his wife Maddy (Oona Chaplin) tells him. “Will you still be taking the bins out?” Of course Adam will still be taking the bins out! That’s because he balances a high-flying career with being a reliable family man. Two kids from his first marriage,...

Over the course of the past few years, we've seen a rise in period horror films that explore what fear would have been like centuries ago. Many of these films stray away from the tropes that horror movie buffs have come to know and love; slashers and house hauntings are exchanged for witches, crimes of religion, and classic takes on legendary monsters. Robert Eggers's films The Witch and The Lighthouse are great examples of this trend, and though not as critically successful, Gretel & Hansel has followed suit.
The new film follows the story of Gretel (Sophia Lillis), a young girl on the cusp of womanhood, and her brother, Hansel (Samuel Leakey). The pair lost their father when Hansel was young enough to not remember him, and the loss left their mother unable to cope, as she grew distant, cold, and often cruel toward her children. After Gretel fails...

Anyone who loves a good fairytale knows the spooky tale of Hansel and Gretel has been highly sanitized from its gruesome beginnings over the last few years, but director Osgood Perkins's Gretel & Hansel is a delightfully haunting return to the story's origins. In an exclusive clip from behind the scenes of the upcoming horror film, Perkins and star Sophia Lillis reveal how a shift in the narrative crafted a new way to portray the classic tale, and why viewers will be kept on the edge of their seats.
"When I first read this script, I could definitely see that this would be a special take on this story," Lillis says in the clip. Like in the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Lillis plays Gretel, who leads her younger brother (Samuel Leakey) into the woods in search of food and work when the pair become desperate. Gretel & Hansel is the most I’ve been taken by an Osgood Perkins production to date. Are those words meant to be interpreted in dual meanings? I’m no tease. Yes, 2020’s grim retelling of a fabled childhood favorite packs all of Perkins’ pronounced visual assuredness into a sub-ninety-minute serving. No, this does not translate into my full embracing of Perkins’ trademark style over substance approach. There’s more to moviegoing than accomplished folklore cinematography, which I’d argue makes (Gretel &) Hansel not so hot right now. This is a film that’s confessedly beautiful in its thick bewitching vibes, but lacks narrative compulsion as a familiar story draws bouillon-thin.
The ages of Perkins’ title siblings have been stretched, Gretel (Sophia Lillis) somewhere around sixteen years old and her brother Hansel (Samuel Leakey) about eight. They’re driven from home by their maddened mother, sent on a path to find lives as foresters.

While he may only be three films into his directorial career thus far, Osgood Perkins has quickly become one of my favorite filmmakers working today, with Gretel & Hansel firmly establishing Perkins as a thoughtful and visionary storyteller who can confidently find new ways to explore timeless stories. A haunting and extraordinarily crafted exploration of the mistreatment of women and our perceptions of evil, if you think you know the journey that Gretel & Hansel will be taking because you know the story of the original fairy tale—think again.
In Gretel & Hansel, we’re introduced to a story about a young girl in a pink bonnet who has special powers, and because of her abilities, those around begin to fear the young girl’s abilities, ultimately exiling her to the depths of the forest to live alone. One of the greatest performers of her, or any generation really, Alice Krige has given us endless entertainment to enjoy for nearly 40 years now. From Chariots of Fire to Ghost Story to Star Trek: First Contact to Sleepwalkers to Silent Hill to Thor: The Dark World, without a doubt, Krige has proven herself time and time again to be in a class all her own.
Krige’s latest role is in Osgood Perkins’ Gretel & Hansel, in which she plays The Witch, who befriends the titular characters (played by Sophia Lillis and Samuel Leakey), but has sinister plans in mind for the siblings, who are unaware that their host isn’t exactly as she seems. Despite already battling Pennywise, It star Sophia Lillis has a new, equally monstrous evil being fond of chowing down on children to contend with in the trailer for Gretel and Hansel, which appears to be a horrifying twist on the classic tale.
Like in the original "grim" fairy tale, Lillis plays Gretel, who leads her younger brother (Samuel Leakey) into the woods in search of food and work when the pair become desperate. Unfortunately, their journey brings them straight into the ominous home of a witch named Holda (Alice Krige), who seems intent on having them for dinner (or something equally freaky).
With echoes of 2015's The Witch, the horror film from director Oz Perkins (The Blackcoat's Daughter) is already primed to take up real estate in our nightmares. Watch the trailer above before Gretel and Hansel wanders into theaters on Jan. 31.

The knee jerk reaction at seeing the title Gretel and Hansel was one of immediate disinterest but something about the still caught my attention and so I begrudgedly pressed play on the trailer only to find myself actually looking forward to yet another take on the classic fairy tale.
This new interpretation stars Sophia Lillis of It fame as Gretel, new-comer Samuel Leakey as Hansel, and Alice Krige as Holda, the evil witch who traps the children.
Few directors could get me excited for a project on that limited amount of information but Oz Perkins is definitely one of them.
