Exclusive: Karolina Wydra (Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.) has landed a lead role opposite Rhea Seehorn in the upcoming Apple TV+ series from Breaking Bad creator and Better Call Saul co-creator Vince Gilligan, Deadline has learned. The untitled project, described as a blended, grounded genre drama, has a two-season straight-to-series order.
Per usual, Gilligan is keeping all information about the show under lock and key, so Apple TV+ and producing studio Sony Pictures Television declined comment.
Believed to be a departure from the world of drugs and crime he explored in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, the new series has been jokingly nicknamed “Breaking Good.”
“After 15 years, I figured it was time to take a break from writing antiheroes… and who’s more heroic than the brilliant Rhea Seehorn?” Gilligan said at the time of the series’ announcement.

After six seasons and 53 Emmy nominations, including seven for Outstanding Drama Series, Better Call Saul has left us without a single win.
The critically acclaimed Breaking Bad prequel was nominated for seven Emmys tonight, including Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor for Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman, Supporting Actress for Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler, as well as Picture Editing, Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series, Sound Mixing and two nominations in the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series category for the “Point and Shoot” episode and series finale, “Saul Gone”, but came up empty for all.
The series somehow, despite its acclaim, never matched the awards success of the mothership series, which won 16 Emmys out of 58 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, four Lead Actor wins for Bryan Cranston, three for Aaron Paul in the supporting actor category and one for Anna Gunn for supporting actress.

In a virtual appearance today at Deadline’s Contenders TV, Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk reflected on the opportunity he had to work with screen legend Carol Burnett over the course of the Breaking Bad prequel’s final season.
“She’s just a great actress — completely connected, completely grounded, utterly with it. With somebody who’s a legend like that, someone who’s older, you worry if you’re going to have to work around them a little — and not at all,” the two-time Emmy winner shared. “She was utterly present, ready to rip it up. She knew her lines, she knew her part so well…It was a beautiful performance. She must get nominated now, come on.”

Last month, it was announced that Sony Pictures TV had given a two-season order for a new series from Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan – a series that has been described as a “blended, grounded genre drama” that’s something along the lines of the classic Rod Serling show The Twilight Zone. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Gilligan’s Better Call Saul cast member Rhea Seehorn is following him over to the new show and has signed on to play the lead role. This untitled series will be released through Apple TV+.
Former Sony Pictures TV presidents Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, who greenlit Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul when they were at Sony, are now the heads of Apple’s streaming portfolio. Former Sony Pictures TV Studios co-president Chris Parnell is now at Apple as well, working as the senior TV programming executive.

The Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe is coming to end, according to co-showrunners Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould.
Gilligan and Gould, speaking on the show’s final virtual TCA panel, said that they have no plans to add another show to the AMC shared universe, although cautioned “never say never”.
“You can’t keep putting all your money on red 21. I feel like we probably pushed it doing a spinoff to Breaking Bad [but] I could not be more happy with the results. Then I did El Camino and I’m very proud of that too. But I think I’m starting to sense you’ve got to know when to leave the party, you don’t want to be the guy with a lampshade on your head,” Gilligan said.

Better Call Saul is almost at its conclusion, but for the stars of the Breaking Bad prequel, the end actually brings a new beginning of sorts and some low-key truths.
“I discovered that Saul is a much easier character to play than Jimmy,” Bob Odenkirk says of the now-iconic sleazy and shameless Albuquerque lawyer Saul Goodman versus the small-time scam artist he once was. “The last couple episodes, he becomes a much richer character again,” he added during Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event. “He’s no longer hiding behind that façade, and he’s actually very much confronting the demons inside him in the last four episodes of the season.”
Contenders TV: The Nominees — Deadline’s Complete Coverage
Demons aside, the whirlwind first part of the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul, the AMC show created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould snared seven Emmy nominations this year.

“You ready?” a shadowy man asks Jesse Pinkman in the first complete trailer for “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.” “Yeah,” he calmly replies.
Aaron Paul is reprising his famous role from “Breaking Bad,” and we’ve finally got a full look at Jesse on the run, even if we don’t have a complete sense of the plot. In the trailer, we see that Jesse is wanted and still shaken up by the events of his former imprisonment. So in desperation, he turns to his old associates, Badger and Skinny Pete (Matt Jones and Charles Baker) for shelter.
He’s now scarred on his cheek and has again shaved his head, and we see him standing in front of a dirty stream, digging in the middle of the desert and finally brandishing a gun, but so far it seems like his meth cooking days are completely over.

The film takes place after the events of “Breaking Bad,” which aired its last episode in 2013, where Pinkman was last scene driving off in a state of relief and tears — in Todd Alquist’s (Jesse Plemons) El Camino. The synopsis of the film reads: In the wake of his dramatic escape from captivity, Jesse must come to terms with his past in order to forge some kind of future.
The short trailer sees Pinkman in his El Camino in the middle of the New Mexico dessert, listening to car radio that is describing the events that took place at the end of “Breaking Bad,” and it appears that Pinkman is a wanted man following Walter White’s (Bryan Cranston) massacre...

While Walter White and Breaking Bad may’ve met their end in 2013, the series left behind a permanent mark on pop culture. And its legacy has only grown in size and importance ever since 2015 with the impressive, if not quite as good spinoff show Better Call Saul.
But late last year, we heard that a Breaking Bad movie was in the works, with creator Vince Gilligan set to write and direct Jesse Pinkman’s new Walter-less adventure. And though that news sent the internet into a meltdown, there hasn’t been much else to report on since then. Until now, that is.
After revealing the release date and plot outline for the pic earlier today, Netflix surprised us all by also dropping the first trailer for what they’ve titled El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. Premiering on October 11th, we don’t see much footage here, but the preview...

That does not mean that “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Quiet Place,” or “Crazy Rich Asians” will land Best Picture nominations, but it is a sign of strength and popularity. Oscar voters tend to take degree of difficulty in production into consideration, and may lean into big box office hits this year.
(Left off the PGA list are long-shot Best Picture contenders “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “First Man.”)

Oscar-snubbed “Life Itself” and “The Lego Movie” win documentary and animation awards
“Birdman” was named the best-produced feature of 2014 at the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday night, giving the daring Alejandro Iñárritu film new life in the Oscar race for Best Picture.
“Boyhood” was considered the most likely PGA winner and the Oscar leader, but the critical favorite now finds itself in the same spot “The Social Network” was in four years ago. That film swept the critics’ awards and the Golden Globes, but then lost the PGA to “The King’s Speech,” which rode a string of guild wins to victory at the Oscars.
