Yes, Nick Creegan is the first Black actor to play the Joker, but his landmark "Batwoman" role means so much more to the DC universe. Creegan spoke to Popsugar about the historic casting, his upcoming movie "Good Egg," and how his cofounded production company Broken Whip Media is on a mission to amplify diverse voices.
Of his casting, Creegan notes that at the time, he was only auditioning to be Marquis Jet - he didn't know the character would transform into the Joker. "I happened to wear a purple shirt [the day I auditioned]. And I just thought about it like, 'You know, everything just kind of aligns for a reason,'" he tells Popsugar. As a bonus, he happens to have a laugh that already suited the role. "My laugh, luckily enough, was strange and crazy. I just used Nick Creegan's laugh. That's what you're hearing."

Jocelyn Nicole Johnson’s upcoming debut novella, “My Monticello,” is set to receive a film adaptation from Chernin Entertainment for Netflix.
The streamer has acquired the rights to Johnson’s novella, which will be published on Oct. 5 in the U.S. through Henry Holt and Co., and via Harvill Secker in the U.K. on Nov. 4.
“My Monticello” is set in the near future, after an ecological disaster leads to societal collapse and bands of white nationalist militias run rampant across the country. A young woman who’s descended from Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings leads a group of refugees to take shelter in Monticello.
A finalist for the 2021 Kirkus Prize, the work has been called “a badass debut by any measure — nimble, knowing, and electrifying” by Colson Whitehead, “absolutely unforgettable” by Roxane Gay, “stunning” by Charles Yu, and “vital and unlike anything else you’ve known before … a voice...

Two films released, another film shot, and Steven Soderbergh managed to still watch and read a decent amount in 2019. (Note to self: barely using his Twitter account probably helps.) So a favorite tradition continues with today’s release of his annual viewing and reading log on Extension 765, which has a surprise, oddity, or some-such at nearly every turn.
Favorites include: making it through all 181 hours of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Too Old to Die Young in seven days but taking nearly four months to finish Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace; Chinatown and Richard Lester movies appearing on yet another list; he, too, watching Fleabag; seeing a version of his next movie, Let Them All Talk, just under a month after principal photography commenced. And so on and so forth.

Universal has signed a first look production deal with Hobbs And Shaw helmer David Leitch and his 87th North Production banner. The Fast & Furious spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham opens on Aug. 2 and is, natch, expected to be one the linchpin titles at the summer box office.
Together with his producer partner Kelly McCormick at 87th North, Leitch is already producing the title story in Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah’s New York Times bestseller Friday Black, which Uni optioned the rights to back in February as exclusively reported by Deadline. Adjei-Brenyah is adapting the script for the film and executive produce. No director has been set yet. 87th North also has Ilya Naishuller’s action thriller Nobody set up at Uni with Bob Odenkirk. Leitch delivered the $785M-plus global grossing sequel Deadpool 2 for Fox last summer, and two years ago directed Atomic Blonde for Focus Features.

Universal Pictures is signing David Leitch, his longtime producing partner, Kelly McCormick and their recently founded 87North Production banner to a first-look production deal.
“David and Kelly have established themselves as a distinctive, stylish filmmaking team who can do it all, from contained thrillers to franchise tentpoles,” said Universal’s president Peter Cramer. “We are confident that this summer’s Hobbs & Shaw will build on their impressive track record of bringing bold, high-quality entertainment to giant global audiences, and we are excited to formalize our long-standing relationship with them at Universal.”
The deal comes on the heels of the most recent “Hobbs & Shaw” trailer, dropped to much praise last Wednesday. 87North is producing the pic with Leitch directing and the tentpole is looked at as one of Universal’s most highly anticipated releases of 2019 (it opens Aug. 2). Exclusive: Universal Pictures has optioned rights to the title story in Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah’s New York Times bestseller Friday Black. A collection of short stories from Mariner Books, Friday Black explores the inhumanity, injustice and a hope that persists in black American life, often with a surrealist eye.
Adjei-Brenyah will adapt the script for the film and executive produce, while Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw director David Leitch will produce alongside his producing partner Kelly McCormick. No director has been set.
“Friday Black” is the seventh story in the book and is set on Black Friday in a dystopian near future. The protagonist, a department store salesman, copes with vicious, insatiable Black Friday shoppers while attempting to win a sales contest among employees, in order to give the prize jacket to his mother as a gift. The New York Times described the short story as “a not-so-subtle critique of consumerism run amok.
