Celebrities and monster fans from all over the United States spent the weekend of July 24-26 celebrating all things horror for a good cause at the Second Annual Scares That Care Weekend film festival and convention. Held at the Doubletree By Hilton Hotel in Williamsburg, Virginia, the Scares That Care Weekend featured special guests David Naughton (American Werewolf In London), Kim Coates (Sons Of Anarchy), and Ken Foree (Dawn Of The Dead). But the weekend’s grande dame was horror icon and three-time Academy Award nominee Piper Laurie (Carrie, Twin Peaks, The Hustler).
Scares That Care is a horror-themed, IRS-approved, 501(c)(3) charity with a mission “to fight the Real Monsters of childhood illness, burns, and breast cancer.” Founded by retired police detective Joe Ripple and run entirely by volunteers, Scares That Care benefits families who are suffering the financial burdens of severe illness.

I love it when horror fans can unite and come together, and we do often. Typically we band together to support films that mean a lot to us, we attend gatherings such as horror conventions and film festivals.
We additionally help fund films that we believe in and endlessly spread the word about projects that we are moved to.
What I find more awesome than all of that is the kindness within the horror community. It's a family. With that in mind, I really want to encourage anyone out there to help a cause that is committed to helping people in need.
The cause is "Scares That Care!" and this year they are trying to raise $30,000 to help three families in need. Please take a minute to read their official press release below about it. Thanks kindly horror friends!

Hey guys, a few days ago I reviewed Zombie Doomsday. Last night, I got an email from the director, Tom Townsend, who asked me to let you guys know about Scares That Care. It's a non-profit that sends money, toys & other items to sick children. It's founder is horror director Joe Ripple and its roots are stuck right in the heart (pun intended) of the horror community. Tom is donating part of his sales from the Zombie Doomsday DVDs to the organization. So buy an awesome movie and help a great cause!

Think back to the comedies of the 1990's like Clueless, Reality Bites, Clerks, etc. They had edge. They had bite. They captured the spirit and the essence of the Gen X slacker mentality to the tee. This period of film has been looked upon by fans fondly. There have been films that have tried to capture the essence and the spirit of these films, but too often do these films come across as feeling forced and labored. Enter Washington D.C. based actor Daniel Ross of Ninjas vs. Vampires (starring: Jay Saunders, Cory Okouchi, Carla Okouchi, Devon Marie Burt, Melissa McConnell, P.J. Megaw, Elizabeth Taylor and Kurt Skarstedt and directed by Justine Timpane). This aspiring up and coming presence captures the mentality of the actors of that period and of those films through his performances with such ease and fluidity. Ninjas Vs. Vampires, his latest film, also serves as the perfect showcase for Daniel Ross,...

Filmmaker / actor Joe Ripple got a unique start in independent films. He was cast as an actor in a local film, being directed by the late Don Dohler. Joe was in the local police department at the time, and they had several police related scenes that were written into the script. After his part was completed, Joe asked Don if I could stay around and help with those scenes. After the film was wrapped, Don approached Jim about directing. The two made five films together before he passed in December of 2006. The Baltimore County native knows that the top three film categories that are usually...

As I have recently become an avid horror convention attendee, I have met some of the nicest and most compassionate people that you could come across in this day-in-age. Such emotions can be derived from recently learning about the brilliance of a non-profit organization, “Scares that Care!”; a scary caring gift to the horror community and humanity.
