Update: A Cook County, Illinois judge has dismissed former Windy CIty Rehab cohost Donovan Eckhardt’s defamation claim against the program’s showrunners.
Judge Patricia O’Brien Sheahan ruled that Eckhardt’s contract called for legal disputes to be settled in a California courtroom. His attorney argued that it would be burdensome for witnesses to travel across the country to testify.
The judge rejected that argument, saying remote testimony could be allowed, obviating any physical travel needs.
Eckhardt is appealing the decision. The second season of the show featured his cohost Alison Victoria lamenting her partnership with Eckhardt and various business dealings.
Eckhardt and Victoria (real last name Gramenos) are still facing legal matters concerning work performed on the rehab houses featured on the first two seasons of the program.

HGTV, known for dozens of programs that focus on home makeovers, is doing some remodeling work on a non-traditional structure: its programming lineup.
The next spate of series from the cable network – one of the biggest properties in the stable of parent company Discovery – will add new elements to the outlet’s usual spate of fix-it shows and flip-your-house programs, including soapy storylines and a new recognition of the nation’s fragile economic state.
In one new series, “Everything But The House, host Lara Spencer will take viewers along as families declutter and downsize their homes. In “Home Again With The Fords,” renovation experts Leanne and Steve Ford will help people whose circumstances send them back to their childhood homes. The new series – HGTV has greenlit 16 series and pilots, representing more than 109 episodes or 77 hours – will also play up real-life dramas involving some of the network’s on-air personalities, whether...

Yet another lawsuit has emerged against the team behind Hgtv’s Windy City Rehab. This time, a family that invested $3 million in projects featured on the reality series are suing stars Alison Victoria Gramenos and Donovan Eckhardt. They accused them of “a deliberate and fraudulent scheme to misappropriate funds.”
The lawsuit claims the stars of the show, which focuses on Chicago homes being renovated, of “bungling” and mismanaging “nearly every project they were associated with.”
Gramenos and Eckhardt have split as professional partners, but alleged efforts by Gramenous to pin the blame on Eckhardt are noted in the suit. “Alison has claimed that she was caught unawares by Donovan’s fraud — notwithstanding her own secreting of funds from closing proceeds.”
The suit was filed Tuesday in Cook County circuit court by Michael Ward Jr., a former friend of Eckhardt; his brother, Thomas Ward; and their father, Michael Ward Sr. They...

The stars of Hgtv’s Windy City Rehab show apparently are on the outs. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on a series of angry texts from Alison Victoria to some disgruntled clients, saying that she does not want former contractor and partner Donovan Eckhardt “to “f— with my life or business any more than he already has.”
The angry message came after Eckhardt apparently bounced a check. Earlier, Victoria posted on Instagram that she was working with a new general contractor.
The text came to light as part of a filing in a lawsuit by a Chicago couple alleging shoddy workmanship and fraud. Victoria told the couple she would make good on Eckhardt’s portion of the check, which aimed to reimburse the couple for a new roof. The one they installed after the rehab leaked.
Eckhardt did not respond to a Sun-Times request for comment, and Victoria declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Hgtv’s Windy City Rehab stars Alison Victoria Gramenos and Donovan Eckhardt have resolved at least some of their differences with Chicago officials over code and permit violations.
The stars were blocked in mid-summer from filing new work permits by the city, which issued several stop-work orders. That put the series in jeopardy, since it focuses on restoring Chicago homes, as its title suggests.
Eckhardt’s real estate developer and general contractor licenses were suspended by the Chicago Department of Buildings, That meant they couldn’t work on the properties in development, and finding new ones was futile.
Now, the city has apparently been satisfied on some aspects of the dispute, and some of the stop-work orders have been lifted. However, new work orders are still barred, dating back to the mid-summer suspension.
The issue was work performed without a permit, working outside of plans approved by the city without permission,...
