Netflix said Thursday that it is turning Sulwe, the bestselling children’s book by Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, into an animated musical, the latest move by the streamer to bolster its feature animation slate that already includes Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10½: A Space Age Adventure, Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild, Nora Twomey’s My Father’s Dragon and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio among others.
Sulwe, written by Nyong’o with illustrations by Vashti Harrison, follows Sulwe, a child who has skin darker than anyone she knows — and all she wants is to be beautiful and bright. One night, she is visited by a shooting star sent by the Night and embarks on a magical journey where she learns the eye-opening story of the sisters Night and Day. The book tells a story about colorism, self-esteem and learning that true beauty comes from within.

Sometimes, good things come to those who wait. Nearly four years ago at this very site, I wrote a lengthy essay arguing that the next great film or TV series was waiting for any studio to adapt, in the form of the Redwall series by the late author Brian Jacques. The series, which posits an adventurous […]

“Wanna try a hard one?”
Hop Along have been rehearsing in a windowless basement in southern New Jersey for most of a late July afternoon, and Frances Quinlan is doing her best to keep her bandmates and herself motivated. Tomorrow at 8 a.m. sharp, they’ll pile into a van for the next leg of their summer tour. Right now, everyone is feeling a little sweaty and a little rusty.
The trouble is, they’re all hard ones. Bark Your Head Off, Dog, the dizzily ambitious album Hop Along released this spring,...

Whether he’s reading to kids at the White House, hitting up local bookstores on Black Friday, or giving recommendations to his daughters, President Barack Obama may as well be known as the Commander in Books.
Potus is an avid reader and recently spoke to the New York Times about the significant, informative and inspirational role literature has played in his presidency, crediting books for allowing him to “slow down and get perspective.” With his presidency coming to an end this Friday, EW looked back at Obama’s lit picks over the years...

For every Harry Potter or Hunger Games series, there are those franchises that didn't quite set the world on fire...
Since Insurgent came out, I’ve been thinking about those less fortunate: the franchise wannabes. While Divergent may have succeeded financially, (a film that rode on the coat-tails of the even more lucrative The Hunger Games franchise) there are others who didn’t quite make it into the movie world’s big leagues. These are the franchise-starters that flopped, the films produced with the optimistic hope that they will bring in the readies and kick-start Hollywood’s latest franchise. Worse luck for them, really.
For the sake of simplicity, this list will zero in on Ya franchise-starters, films adapted from a young adult novel or with that audience in mind. There are plenty of more mature films that struggled such as Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time, The A-Team...

Pitch a children’s movie to a studio about a mouse, a secret order of superintelligent rats, a bumbling crow, and their adventures on a farm and chances are they might go for it. Such was the basic premise of The Secret of Nimh, except the tone and imagery within makes it a bit too much for most children; this might explain its poor box office performance back in 1982. It’s not the idea that doesn’t work, as many children’s stories have centered on rodents and their adventures, and something similar in plot and theme was the basis of Brian Jacques’s Redwall books which would follow The Secret of Nimh four years later. No, The Secret of Nimh sits in its own corner because it attempts a tone and style most weren’t and still aren’t looking for in a film for kids.

The recently released Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole trailer shows all kinds of owl on owl action, and not in the Animal Planet kind of way.
To be honest I really had absolutely no interest in this film. Personally I don't care for movies involving animals that act incredibly like humans. They seem odd to me and at this point feel way over done. The last movie I enjoyed like this was the old 2D animated Secret of Nimh. Even with Zack Snyder (arguably my favorite director after seeing Watchmen) helming this one, I found it hard to muster up any excitement.
After seeing this trailer, I can say I don't really have that problem anymore. Frankly the film looks gorgeous, and even though we're dealing with birds going to war, Snyder's typical art style (slow-mo and everything) are still showing through. Unlike their teaser trailer, this...
