“In the Streets” is the first edition of the Notebook Insert, a seasonal supplement on moving-image culture.Illustration by Lale Westvind. On the night of November 17, 2011, thousands marched across the Brooklyn Bridge holding electric tea candles, a kind of vigil for dashed hopes. Two nights earlier, their protest encampment had been evicted from Zuccotti Park, a sparsely planted public-private open space two blocks from the New York Stock Exchange, from which they had fomented a popular movement demanding broad changes to the status quo of global capitalism. The march had been planned in advance to mark two months since the inception of the occupation, but in the aftermath of the police raid, it took on a somber, even funereal aspect. As marchers proceeded across the bridge overpass, a huge circle of light appeared on the long windowless wall of a nearby skyscraper, beneath the menacing checkmark logo of a telecommunications company.

This homespun documentary highlights Gaddings Dam, where intrepid wild swimmers visit in all weathers
Here’s a gentle and rather lovely documentary about the community of wild swimmers who dip all year round at Gaddings Dam on the West Yorkshire moors. A beautiful spot, the dam is England’s highest beach – though it’s unlikely to be winning any awards for the sunniest. Not that lashing rain, storm-force winds or thick ice put off the hardy year-round dippers. They’re a jolly bunch – slightly bonkers, which is meant kindly. Most don’t do wetsuits; when the water temperature drops, on go the woolly hats, gloves and booties to protect extremities.
The dam is a mill pond built in the 1830s; about 20 years ago, under threat of being drained, it was rescued by a group of enthusiastic locals. Veteran dipper Clive, now in his late 60s, says he racks up 500 or 600 dips a year.

Completed yet shelved by Warner Bros Discovery, Snowpiercer season 4 will finally get an airing thanks to a deal with AMC.
Another victim of cost-cutting at Warner Bros Discovery, sci-fi series Snowpiercer was unceremoniously scrapped in January 2023 – a decision made after production had already completed on what was planned as its fourth and final season. Snowpiercer therefore joined the likes of Batgirl and Coyote Vs Acme in a grim list of tax write-offs at the studio.
There’s now good news, however: AMC has acquired the rights to Snowpiercer, and there are now plans to stream the first three seasons on AMC+ this year, while the fourth and final season will finally stream in 2025.
“Snowpiercer is an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride with a loyal fanbase – similar to the passionate fandoms we serve across our biggest franchise series – and a welcome addition to AMC and AMC+,” said AMC executive Ben Davis in a statement to Variety.

There’s light at the end of the tunnel for Snowpiercer, after all.
The post-apocalyptic drama on wheels was canceled after three seasons by TNT in January 2023, despite previously scoring a renewal for a fourth — and final — season.
At the time of the cancellation, the entirety of the fourth season was in the can, meaning that an ending had been filmed, but producers would need to find a new outlet to air the episodes.
Truthfully, we lost hope the episodes would see the light of day because it was the latest in a long line of financially driven decisions by Warner Bros. Discovery, which had already scrapped the already-completed Batgirl movie, among other things.
As the weeks turned into months, the chance of Snowpiercer securing a home to air its final-ever episodes looked bleak … until AMC stepped up to the plate this week.

TNT‘s series adaptation of Bong Joon Ho’s “Snowpiercer” (which was based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob) kicked off back in 2020, with three seasons aired between 2020 and 2022. Season 4 has already been filmed, but it won’t be airing on TNT. As we learned last year, TNT made the decision to cut ties with the brand entirely.
The good news? The upcoming season has been given a second chance at life.
Variety reports this afternoon that “Snowpiercer” Season 4 has been acquired by AMC – along with the previous three seasons – and it’ll finally premiere on AMC in early 2025.
Variety notes, “It had already been announced Season 4 would be the show’s last before TNT parent company Warner Bros. Discovery decided to not air Season 4 altogether in a cost-cutting move. Producer Tomorrow Studios then shopped the show to other outlets.”

Snowpiercer season 4 went into production in early 2022, and by the middle of that year, TNT had confirmed that season 4 would also be the last season of the show. That was soon after TNT owner WarnerMedia merged with Discovery Inc to form Warner Bros. Discovery… and things have been pretty wild since that merger happened, with films being scrapped as tax write-offs, content purges, and streaming service shake-ups. One of their surprising “write down strategy” moves came in January of 2023, when Warner Bros. Discovery decided they wouldn’t even bother to air Snowpiercer season 4 on TNT. The show has been searching for a new home ever since. Today, Deadline reports that it has found one: AMC.
Deadline lets us know, “The first three seasons of the show will stream on AMC+ later this year and season 4 will air on the linear network and the streaming service in early 2025.” Snowpiercer is a Tomorrow Studios production.

Patience is a virtue, especially if you're a sci-fi fan.
When it comes to genre TV, science fiction and sci-fi adjacent programs are often saved when unceremoniously dumped by a network.
Jericho, Lucifer, The Expanse, and Stargate Sg-1 all found new life after cancellation. Today, Snowpiercer joins that list.
AMC Networks announced today that it has acquired the exclusive U.S. linear and streaming rights to all four seasons of the post-apocalyptic drama series Snowpiercer.
The first three seasons of the critically acclaimed drama will stream on AMC+ later this year, leading up to the series’ season four premiere on AMC and AMC+ in early 2025.
This should come as excellent news for TV Fanatics, as the show always drove discussion and fueled passionate viewers with much to say.

Snowpiercer’s final season will see the light of day after all.
AMC has picked up rights to all four seasons of the post-apocalyptic drama — including the completed but never aired fourth season. The series first aired on TNT, but the Warner Bros. Discovery network canceled the show in January 2023 as it and sister channels TBS and TruTV left the scripted business.
The first two seasons of Snowpiercer will begin streaming on AMC+ on June 1, with season three following a week later. The final season will debut July 21 on both AMC and AMC+ — a change from the network’s earlier plans to air the final season in early 2025.
“Snowpiercer is an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride with a loyal fanbase — similar to the passionate fandoms we serve across our biggest franchise series — and a welcome addition to AMC and AMC+,” said Ben Davis, executive vp original programming at AMC Networks and AMC Studios.

The final season of Snowpiercer has finally found a home.
The fourth season of the sci-fi drama will air on AMC after the company acquired the rights to the Tomorrow Studios-produced series. It comes after TNT scrapped the show last year as part of a wider Warner Bros. Discovery content write down strategy.
Deadline revealed in January 2023 that the fourth season wouldn’t air on its original home, as part of a slew of content cuts that also including the axing of Batgirl, Abrams’ HBO drama Demimonde, and TBS series such as The Big D, Chad and Kill The Orange Bear.
It is the latest series that AMC has saved after being scrapped elsewhere; the network bought Captain Nemo series Nautilus after it was cut by Disney+.

After being cancelled by Disney+ earlier this year, Nautilus has found a new home at AMC.
The Captain Nemo origin series had already finished shooting, but Disney dropped the series nonetheless as a cost-cutting measure. As stated by CFO Christine McCarthy, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation…As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.” Nautilus will air on AMC as well as AMC+ sometime next year.

A retelling of the story of Captain Nemo is on the move — and not just under the ocean.
AMC Networks has grabbed linear and streaming rights to Nautilus — a reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea — in the United States and Canada. The series, which hails from British companies Moonriver TV and All3Media-owned Seven Stories, was initially set for Disney+, which picked it up to series in August 2021. After scrapping the show earlier this year as part of a content write-down, however, Disney Entertainment has licensed Nautilus to AMC and its sibling streamer AMC+, which plan to air the series in 2024.
“Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes,” said Ben Davis, executive vp original programming at AMC Networks and AMC Studios.

The Captain Nemo origin story series “Nautilus” lives on, with AMC Networks licensing the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to the live-action series from Disney Entertainment.
The 10-episode show was originally slated to air on Disney+, but it was announced back in August that the show was not going forward at the streamer as part of a wide-ranging cost cutting initiative at the Mouse House.
AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as a special television event in 2024, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” the show will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played by Shazad Latif. The character is described as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.

“Nautilus,” which will air on AMC and AMC+ as a special television event in 2024, tells the origin story of Captain Nemo, an Indian prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.
Disney+ declined to pick up the series after it was finished in August.
The series stars Shazad Latif, Georgia Flood, Thierry Fremont and Céline Menville, with guest appearances from Richard E Grant, Anna Torv and Noah Taylor.

Nautilus, the ten-part series inspired by Jules Verne’s beloved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has found a new home.
The series has landed at AMC, where it will air in 2024 as well as on AMC+. The move comes after the Disney+ UK commission was axed by the streamer earlier this summer as part of its content removal plan.
Nautilus tells the origin story of Captain Nemo: an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.
It is the latest series axed by Disney as part of its move to cut streaming costs – the Mouse House is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion – to find a new home. The Spiderwick Chronicles, which was similarly canceled at Disney+, found a spot on Roku.

New York, New York, the latest Kander and Ebb musical on Broadway, announced Sunday that it will close in one week.
The musical, which also features additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is inspired by the 1977 film, which was directed by Martin Scorsese and featured Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro. The show opened at the St. James Theatre on April 26 and will now play its final performance July 30.
The sudden closure comes as the large-scale production, which had a big cast and expansive scenery, has failed to pull in big numbers at the box office, amid unfavorable reviews. In recent weeks, capacity has hovered just above 70 percent. Additionally, the musical won only one Tony Award, for best scenic design, after being nominated for nine, including best musical.

Though Tom Pelphrey was already a two-time Daytime Emmy-winner for his work in the daytime drama “Guiding Light” and had been working steadily on stage and screen, his move to “Ozark’s” third season took his career to a new level. He blazed onscreen as Ben Davis, the bipolar brother of Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney), and seemingly shot to stardom overnight. It’s been a busy couple of years for the actor both professionally and personally — his partner Kaley Cuoco gave birth to their first child, a daughter, on March 30. And now Pelphrey is starring in “Love and Death,” HBO Max’s limited series from David E. Kelley about Texas housewife Candy Montgomery (played by Elisabeth Olsen), who killed her friend Betty Gore in 1980 after being confronted with evidence of Montgomery’s affair with Gore’s husband. (Montgomery pleaded self-defense and was acquitted of murder.) Pelphrey plays Don Crowder, a...

Marvel knew exactly what it was getting with director Chloé Zhao, whose naturalistic aesthetic for “Eternals” was demonstrated in her Oscar-winning “Nomadland.” Crucially, this had a significant impact on the VFX: Zhao eschewed green and blue screens for shooting on location in the Canary Islands and England, where the natural light (particularly Magic Hour) and her anthropological visual style had a direct bearing on full CG shots.
Additionally, the epic world building, the cosmic energy of the superhero Eternals, and the CG character design of the antagonistic Deviants and Celestials were influenced by manga, anime, and Marvel comics. But Zhao ultimately tied them all to the metaphysical theme of nature as the ultimate superpower.
“We went on location more than we normally do for a Marvel movie, and Chloé wanted everything to be in natural places,” said Marvel VFX production supervisor Stephane Ceretti. “She also wanted to work with Ben Davis,...

Our rave review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri notes that cinematographer Ben Davis “captures the action and outbursts of violence with assured zip and clarity.” Though true, it’s only the tip of the iceberg. Martin McDonagh’s third feature — his second with Davis behind the camera, following 2012’s Seven Psychopaths — is among the most beautiful released this year, photographed with a knowledge of its small-town environment (North Carolina rather than Missouri, but let’s not hold that against the film) that renders seemingly quotidian settings a scarred landscape of pain and anger.
Speaking one-on-one with Davis will make clear that Billboards‘ fine palette is no happy accident, instead being the result of intense consideration for environment, emotion, color, space, and, especially in the case of a show-stopping single take — one that hardly asks for us to stand and applaud, even as we’re wondering how it could be pulled off — movement.

Very few films are perfect. That’s a rare beast in the cinematic world. So, I want to be perfectly clear when I say that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is perfect. It truly is. The movie stands tall among almost every single other 2017 release. As terrific as the Trailers have been, they in no way prepare you for the staggering heights of this work. Opening in theaters this week, it could very well become a strong hit for Fox Searchlight. Beyond that, the flick is undoubtedly going to be an Academy Award favorite when nominations are announced. That goes without saying at this point. Voters will go hard for this one. This movie is a black comedy of sorts. It has been many month since Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) found out that her daughter was raped and murdered. The police, led by Chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) have no leads,...

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

I've been hearing nothing but great things about this movie from people who I know who have seen it. I have yet to see if for myself, but judging from the buzz spreading, it's going to deliver some insanely blood-soaked entertainment.
We have a red-band clip for you to watch today called "All In My Mind," and it gives you a little tease of the messed-up and disturbing violence that I've heard this film is filled with. It focuses on Sean Gunn's character in the middle of a crazy shootout that he doesn't want to believe is really happening. Check it out:

Chicago – We’ve reached a point where comic book films are no longer a scarcity, but an eventuality. With several coming out every year, each one competes for our attention even though the originality behind their approach has the opposite effect. A great cinematic fatigue is almost upon us, but “Doctor Strange” shows a promising deviation that could possibly alter the franchise’s fate.

Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson assembles a team of writers (Jon Spaihts and C. Robert Cargill) that best compliment his horror background and that would be needed to create this previously unexplored comic book world. Derrickson successfully blends the needed gravity (both the force of nature and the serious tone) the material calls for with a unifying sense of levity that interconnects every Marvel film. The film still agonizingly suffers from the predictable hero origin story that we have seen done so many times before,...

When we last left the Marvel “movie-verse” (it might be six months on the nose), the alliance of heroes was nearly destroyed in Captain America: Civil War. The rift will take a while to repair, so perhaps some new blood is needed. Time to introduce another iconic character from the Marvel Comics pantheon. This champion against evil belongs to a special superhero subset, one we’ve not seen in these last few big screen blockbusters. Let’s see, there are the “super-monsters” like the Hulk and the Fantastic Four’s the Thing. And there’s the “super-weaponists” like archers the Green Arrow and Hawkeye. This new movie subject belongs in the realm of the “super-magician”. Their roots go back to Houdini and his rivals who inspired radio’s “Chandu” and “Mandrake” from the newspapers’ comic strip pages. Of course, the comic books jumped on board with Dr. Fate, Ibis, Zatara,...

With only a solitary passing mention of The Avengers, Doctor Strange is as stand-alone an adventure as we will get from Marvel — prior to a mid-credits sequence, at least. As explained by a master of the mystic arts, Wong (Benedict Wong), the Zen-exuding good guys here are meant to protect a mystical realm outside the physical one we’ve seen endangered thirteen times prior in the McU. This higher, inherently more important calling pleads for more demanding visual effects, and it comes in psychedelic spades throughout director Scott Derrickson’s origin story. But despite all the aesthetic glee tied to infinite dimensions and symmetrically-collapsing architecture, the “origin” of Doctor Strange feels disappointingly rote and the “story” is little more than a series of groovy platitudes relayed to Benedict Cumberbatch as he jumps around the universe — or, more accurately, two-to-three primary locations.

Sometimes words are just words. Other times a strong voice can bring written words to life. That is the goal of a writer after all. In Genius, Max Perkins (played by Colin Firth) is a man who helps bring these words to life, albeit, sometimes in a more condensed or cohesive form. He’s an editor for Charles Scribner’s Sons in New York in 1929. Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law) is a boisterous struggling writer when Perkins barges into Perkins’ office with the hope to be the next classic writer published by the company, following in the footsteps of Hemingway and Fitzgerald, respectively. The ups and downs of this creative partnership push both of these men to their limits, as well as that of their wives (Nicole Kidman and Laura Linney).
When reading great works of literature, it’s easy to forget the blood, sweat, and tears that go into such an undertaking.

Following Captain America: Civil War, Marvel.s Phase Three slate of movies continues this November with Doctor Strange, the McU.s first foray into the world of magic. In front of the camera, the mystical blockbuster has accumulated some impressive talent, from Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange to Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo. However, it.s also important not to forget the folks working off camera, like director Scott Derrickson, writer C. Robert Cargill and cinematographer Ben Davis. Now we can add Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino to the list of Doctor Strange.s behind-the-scenes talent. Giacchino announced he would be scoring Doctor Strange on his Twitter page, commenting that, "Things are about to get, well... really Strange." He also tagged Marvel and Scott Derrickson in the tweet, a.k.a. his bosses. While the first Doctor Strange trailer was released last month, it.s unlikely that any of Giacchino.s music...

With filming on Doctor Strange officially wrapped, and the first trailer having been released, we are finally starting to get a better picture of what we can expect from the film when it debuts this November. Cinelinx looks at what we know, what we hope for and what we expect from the movie debut of the master of the mystic arts, as played by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Doctor Stephen Strange is one of Marvel Comics oldest characters, having been created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in Strange Tales # 110, back in July 1963. He was inspired by earlier magician characters like Mandrake and Chandu. His appearance was based on legendary horror film star Vincent Price. Dr. Strange has been a big part of many major Marvel storylines over the past 53 years. Stephen Strange is Marvel’s ‘Sorcerer Supreme’, also known as the master of the mystic arts.

Marvel co-president Louis D'Esposito has continued to post behind-the-scenes pics from the set of the company's "Doctor Strange" movie on social media feeds. His surprising revelation today is a shot of new Spider-Man actor Tom Holland visiting the set.
The shot has Holland, D'Esposito and director Scott Derrickson posing during a break in filming, but it's unlikely that Holland has a cameo in character in the film itself - rather he's just swinging by. Other shots from D'Esposito are also below including sets that are rumored to be a part of the inner sanctum of The Ancient One. The film itself opens late 2016.
