It’s been a minute since we checked in on Máximo, old and young, and Las Colinas. Actually, it’s been like 16 months in the real world, which is why it was a wise choice for the “Acapulco” Season 3 trailer to open with the exposition it did.
Máximo (Eugenio Derbez): “Hugo, do you remember where my rags-to-riches life story left off? It all started with a job as Las Colinas. I told you about my big promotion and Julia and I getting together — but there’s still so much more I haven’t told you.”
Smash Cut To: Season 2’s big cliffhanger moment. Oh that’s right, (old) Máximo has a grownup daughter we didn’t even know about. The trailer doesn’t really get into that storyline, but certainly the season will.

CBS has renewed the comedy “Ghosts” for Season 4 and the drama “Fire Country” for Season 3.

CBS is looking to scare up more laughs after handing an early Season 4 renewal to supernatural comedy Ghosts.
It is the latest renewal order for the Paramount-owned network, which also handed a third season to Fire Country and gave Justin Hartley series Tracker a second season earlier this month.
Ghosts, which is based on the BBC’s British comedy, has been a success for CBS since launching in 2021. Its third season is averaging over 10M viewers in live 7-day multiplatform viewing, which is marginally up from last year and streaming numbers are up on Paramount+, where the company said it ranked as its number one comedy in February.

The move gives some continuity to CBS’ comedy slate for next season as two of its longer running series, Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola are coming to an end.

Whether it’s a collision in an office elevator or a case of mistaken identities, fans of romantic comedies have a love-hate relationship with meet-cutes: The central couple must meet somehow and, since this is a love story, preferably they should do so in a cute way. But how many more white shirts must be killed in the name of clumsy-cute trip-and-falls while holding cups of coffee or orange juice?
For serialized romances, the challenge is even greater. Directors and writers must create interesting run-ins for characters to help sustain interest for longer than it takes for audiences to eat a bucket of popcorn.
“I feel like the bar now is, if you are expected to figure out a meet-cute, it has to be your new slightly subversive never-before-seen version of it,” says director Jay Karas. “I don’t think it’s a trope that we can totally get away from,...

Netflix continues to bet big on kids and family programming. The streaming service announced on Friday it optioned the rights to Annie Barrows’ illustrated children’s book series “Ivy & Bean” and plans to make them into movies.
The live-action films will be one-hour in length and geared toward family audiences. Kathy Waugh is writing the movies.
“With a one-hour run-time, the ‘Ivy & Bean’ film series will still very much be movies the whole family can enjoy,” said Netflix’s Director of Family Features Naketha Mattocks. “Safe, fun and elevated comedy-adventures, they also have the wonderful benefit of giving the youngest members of the family an opportunity to see themselves as the star of their own story.”
“Ivy & Bean” follows two unlikely friends — the loud and fearless Bean, and the thoughtful and quiet Ivy. Yet the two discover that an adventure can reveal that even seemingly different people can become the best of friends.

Although there are many streaming options to choose from during the lockdown, Netflix is arguably still ahead of the pack. As well as adding new comedies to cheer you up, and introducing subscribers to one of the worst movies ever made, the platform have put out a set of intriguing titles this week, including the bonkers Angel Has Fallen, original wrestling picture The Main Event, comedy Love, Wedding, Repeat, Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and thriller Mile 9.
Angel Has Fallen is the third part of the Gerard Butler-starring Fallen trilogy, which appears to be trying to up the craziness in each installment. The latest movie, which was in theaters in 2019, sees Butler’s Mike Banning becoming the director of the President’s secret service detail, only to be framed for an attack on the Commander of Chief. There’s a bit of magic sprinkled into director Jay Karas’ “The Main Event.” Trouble is, adults in the audience will have to go looking for it. This kid-centric wish-fulfillment fantasy from WWE Studios centers around a bullied runt who enters a professional wrestling contest after finding a super-powered and super-stinky mask. The film represents all the tenets of the corporation’s brand and suitably cloaks them in a celebratory, family-friendly guise. Only the execution of the catchy high concept, along the lines of “Like Mike” and “Rookie of the Year,” is a mixed bag. It’s nowhere near the quality of last year’s word-of-mouth sensation from the same studio, “Fighting With My Family,” but dispenses heartening commentary to its target market about the power of dreaming big and harnessing your own authentic strengths.

A few days after the WWE scaled back its matches, instituted coronavirus protocols and began staging events without an audience, the company’s studio arm has stepped into the breach, along with Netflix, to release “The Main Event,” in which an 11-year-old boy with a magic mask spends lots of time inside the ring in front of those screaming fans that have disappeared in real life.
(And as a bonus, the climactic match takes place in a steel cage, the hallmark of the now-shuttered Ufc.)
It’s unlikely, though, that too many WWE fanatics are going to embrace “The Main Event” in place of a full-fledged Raw or Smackdown or Wrestlemania event, despite the presence of a bevy of the organization’s stars, including Sheamus, The Miz and Kofi Kingston. This is a kids’ movie, a WWE spin on “Air Bud” or “Angels in the Outfield” or “Space Jam” rather...

The Main Event may be a family film set to arrive on Netflix, but its content might make you think it’s something streaming on the WWE Network, since the wrestling-themed family film is packed with the wrestling company’s stars.
Indeed, what we have here is a fantastical wish-fulfillment offering in which an 11-year-old, played by Seth Carr finds a magical luchador mask that enhanced abilities that he uses for a crucial competition to become a WWE superstar.
Jay Karas directed the film, bringing television experience notably from tenures on sitcoms such as Superstore, Splitting Up Together, Teachers and Workaholics. He worked here off a screenplay credited to Peter Hoare, Zach Lewis, Larry Postel and Jim Mahoney.

Throughout his career, Demetri Martin has singled himself out by thinking about all angles of life in a different way. His new Netflix special, out next month, finds him wondering if he might have always been overdoing it, just a little bit.
Martin returns to the stage in “Demetri Martin: The Overthinker,” a new hour of musings on everything from his own childhood precociousness to getting angry while driving. As Netflix’s trailer for at the special below shows, the guy behind “The Overthinker” has plenty of fresh ideas for getting people to tune in.
The special, which was recorded at the Moore Theater in Seattle, is Martin’s first full filmed stage effort since 2015’s “Demetri Martin Live* at the time.” In the intervening years, Martin wrote, directed, and starred in the 2016 Tribeca-winning indie feature “Dean.”
“The Overthinker” also reunites him with director Jay Karas, who was also behind...

A very pregnant Ali Wong is headed back to Netflix for her second original stand-up comedy special.
In Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife, the always unapologetic and nasty first time mom gets real on why having kids is not all it’s cracked up to be, including the challenges of breastfeeding, balancing family and career post pregnancy, and why all women deserve three years of paid maternity leave. The hourlong special was filmed at Toronto’s Winter Garden Theatre, and premieres globally on (appropriately) Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13 on Netflix.
Wong’s first Netflix special, Baby Cobra, was released on Mother’s Day 2016. It was filmed in September 2015 when Wong was seven months pregnant with her daughter.
Jay Karas directed both Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife and Baby Cobra Netflix specials.
Wong was a series regular on NBC’s Are You There, Chelsea? and appeared on Chelsea Lately. She also played Dr.
