Kkr Vice Captain Nitish Rana(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Nitish Rana, the attacking left-handed batter and part-time off-spinner, is a key player for the Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) in the Ipl 2024. But there’s more to him than just his impressive cricket skills!
Nitish Rana’s journey from Mumbai to Kkr stardom
Nitish Rana started making his mark in the Ipl with the Mumbai Indians. However, it was after being bought by Kkr in the 2018 auction that his career truly took off. Kkr recognized his batting prowess and retained him in the 2022 Mega Auction for a cool 8 crore. He’s even been able to play international cricket, representing India in a single Odi and a couple of T20Is against Sri Lanka in 2021.
Leadership runs in Rana’s blood (sort of!). When Shreyas Iyer was unavailable due to his injury in Ipl 2023, Rana stepped up and donned the captain’s hat for Kkr.

New Delhi, August 25 (Ians) When thinking about Rishabh Pant’s road to recovery from injuries suffered in a car accident last year, physiotherapy and rehabilitation immediately spring to mind. Nutrition, an often-under-rated concept, has actually played a crucial role in his ongoing recovery process.
Before the accident, Rishabh was associated with Shweta Shah, a nutritionist, and founder of EatFit24/7, on Ms Dhoni’s recommendation. In late March this year, Shweta was back in the picture, to solve Rishabh’s issues via nutrition.
“Rishabh was unable to eat anything, resulting in him having no energy. He had too much headaches, couldn’t do his physio or walk even for two steps or five minutes. What food he had to eat was a problem as his family attempted to make him eat his comfort food, as he’s a hardcore chicken lover.”

Mumbai, Aug 10 (Ians) Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has expressed concerns over unresolved issues with the No.4 spot in ODIs, stating that “after Yuvraj Singh, nobody has come and settled in”.
With less than two months to go before the Cricket World Cup, the no.4 position is a hot topic for debate and the reason is the growing list of injuries.
Due to the players getting injured, the Men In Blue have struggled to find the right fit throughout the year and are now left with no choice but to try different players.India have played 11 players at the No.4 position in ODIs since the end of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, with only Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant batting over 10 times.
However, Pant won’t be able to make it to the World Cup team this year considering his injuries after his car crash, while Iyer is yet to return after a back injury.

London, Aug 9 (Ians) Former England captain Nasser Hussain has identified the one area that Team India need to bolster if they are to improve their Test record away from home and claim a first Icc World Test Championship title this cycle.
While India reached the most recent final of the Icc World Test Championship on the back of some great success on home soil, their form away from the sub-continent remains an ongoing concern for Hussain.
India recently defeated the West Indies 1-0 in the Caribbean and played some excellent cricket in Bangladesh at the end of last year to inch towards a maiden appearance in the World Test Championship Final, but results away from home have been mixed for Rohit Sharma’s side outside those two series.
Hussain believes when playing at home India have the right blend of players to continue to prosper.

New Delhi, Aug 6 (Ians) When Rahul Dravid took over as India’s head coach, he was seen as a ‘crisis man’ by fans and experts, who expected him to bail Team India out from all the off-field controversies and also end the Icc titles drought. However, his tenure as a coach so far has been very disappointing and has invited severe criticism before the upcoming Odi World Cup.
Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri as India’s head coach after a successful stint as the head of cricket at Nca, where he oversaw a successful India U-19 and A tour programme. He was initially hesitant to take on a coaching role with the senior team full of stars, but he was convinced by Bcci officials and he later accepted the job.

New Delhi, Aug 6 (Ians) With the 2023 Men’s Odi World Cup now only two months away, it is time for the teams to fine tune their combinations and see who are their best eleven players and four back-ups ready to participate in the competition from October 5 to November 19.
For India, it is the same route too – fine tune combinations and see every game as a chance to find their strongest playing eleven for the mega event at home. Their recent 2-1 series win over the West Indies was important in seeing what the contenders for numbers four and five had to show.
But the first two games of the series in Barbados showed that there was confusion in India’s way of experimenting with the batting order. Apart from Ishan Kishan smashing a hat-trick of fifties as an opener, which could point towards him being a back-up opening option.

Mumbai, Aug 6 (Ians) With the recent experimentation by the team management with the Indian playing XI giving mixed results, the senior national cricket selectors will be in a fix when they sit down to finalise the squad for the Asia Cup 2023 and the Asian Games which follow it, which will be important stops on the journey to the Odi World Cup to be held later in the year.
The Icc Odi World Cup in October-November in India follows on the heels of the Asia Cup 2023, which will be held from August 30 to September 17 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and the Asian Games in Hangzhou from September 23-October 8. It is apparent that the selectors will be left with little time to settle on their World Cup squad.

New Delhi, Aug 6 (Ians) Asia Cup will start in less than a month while just 60 days are left for the Icc Odi World Cup 2023 to begin and Team India is still unsure about who would be the perfect fit for the number 4 position.
The reason is the growing list of injuries as Team India continues to battle both on the field and off the field. Due to the players getting injured, the Men In Blue have struggled to find the right fit throughout the year and are now left with no choice but to try different players ahead of the Asia Cup.
As per the latest medical update provided by the Bcci, wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant has made significant progress in his rehabilitation and has commenced batting as well as keeping in the nets.

New Delhi, Aug 3 (Ians) Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that one major difference in the build-up of the 2023 Men’s Odi World Cup as compared to the preparation undertaken by the 2011 tournament-winning team, has been the significantly lesser time of playing matches as a cohesive unit.
After the end of 2007 Odi World Cup and before the start of the 2011 edition, India had played 118 ODIs. With the 2023 World Cup being just over two months away, India have played just 57 matches after the end of the 2019 edition in England. Moreover, India has played 42 ODIs since the start of 2021, with 44 players being tried out, highlighting that a settled combination hasn’t been achieved yet.

Port of Spain, July 25 (Ians) Indian wicket keeper-batter Ishan Kishan believes that England cricket team’s ‘Bazball’ batting approach is best suited for flat surfaces and it is not necessary to play in that aggressive manner in every Test match.
After making his Test debut in the first match against the West Indies in Dominica, Ishan who scored his maiden Test fifty in 33 balls in the second innings of the drawn second game here, emphasized the significance of pitch conditions in shaping the batting strategy.
He pointed out that on flat surfaces, where quick scoring is possible, employing the ‘Bazball’ approach could prove advantageous.
“It is not possible that you can play that fast everyday, it depends upon the situation also. If the wicket is flat, where you can score quick, and the need of the team is to get runs quickly, then I think you can take on that action,...

Port of Spain, July 24 (Ians) India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan thanked Rishabh Pant after his maiden Test fifty against West Indies on Sunday, and revealed both the players had a conversation at the Nca before the beginning of the series. Pant has been recovering from the horrific car accident that occurred on December 30, 2022. His rehabilitation has been closely monitored by the Bcci, who last week reported that the cricketer had made significant progress.
On Sunday, Kishan had played a delightful knock against the West Indies on day four of the second Test.
Speaking after the day’s play on Sunday, Kishan thanked Pant and revealed that the two had a chat at the Nca as the former was preparing for the series against West Indies.
“I was at Nca before coming here. I was practising there and Rishabh was also there for his rehab. He just got a few points for me.

Shubman Gill has to alter his game; improve on batting in slow and low conditions, says Wasim Jaffer
New Delhi, July 22 (Ians) Former India opener Wasim Jaffer believes Shubman Gill must alter his game and show some improvement if he wishes to bat for long at number three in the Test team, especially when playing on slow and low conditions.
Gill volunteered to bat at number three for the ongoing Test series against West Indies, but hasn’t quite hit the straps at a position whose previous occupants were Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara. In the Dominica Test, Gill’s first innings at number three yielded only six runs. In the first innings of the ongoing Test at Port of Spain, he could make only ten runs.

New Delhi, July 22 (Ians) Former India opener Wasim Jaffer said he was surprised at the selection of fast bowler Umran Malik for the T20I series against West Indies in August, citing him leaking runs in the matches he’s played in the shortest format as well as in the Ipl.
In eight T20Is, Malik has played since his debut, he has picked 11 wickets at an economy rate of 10.48. Malik is also included in India’s squad for the Odi series against West Indies, where he’s picked 13 wickets in eight games at an economy rate of 6.45. New Delhi, June 29 (Ians) The Indian Premier League (Ipl) franchise Delhi Capitals announced on Thursday that assistant coaches Ajit Agarkar and Shane Watson have left the side, nearly a month after the team finished ninth in the 2023 season of the tournament.

New Delhi, June 23 (Ians) Openers Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal and medium-pacer Mukesh Kumar have earned maiden Test call-ups for India’s upcoming tour of West Indies, starting from July 12 in Dominica.
The tour will be India’s first Test series after losing the 2023 World Test Championship final to Australia at The Oval earlier this month.
In the squad announced by the Men’s Selection Committee for the upcoming two-match Test series in the Caribbean which also marks the beginning of India’s 2023-25 Wtc cycle, there are no places for veteran top-order batter Cheteshwar Pujara, senior pacers Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami.
While Shami may have been given a rest considering the hectic workload of playing Ipl 2023 and Wtc final, leaving out Pujara and Umesh, while picking Gaikwad and Jaiswal, along with Mukesh and Navdeep Saini in the 16-member Test team, means it is the start of the transition process in the Test team.

Bengaluru, June 14 (Ians) India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant on Wednesday updated the cricketing world about his road to recovery by posting a video of himself climbing up the stairs without any support. Pant, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (Nca) in Bengaluru, captained his post on Instagram with, “Not bad yaar Rishabh. Simple things can be difficult sometimes.”
In the short video clip, the first part shows the time when Pant was struggling to climb up stairs and needed support of railings while the second part showed a confident version of him fearlessly climbing up the stairs.
Apart from this, he also shared a video on his Instagram story, where he can be seen working on his right leg movement, taking support from a wooden stick, while grimacing in pain at times due to the pain on right knee.
“Keep going, Rishabh,” wrote Delhi Capitals, his Ipl franchise.

Virat Kohli, for years quite talismanic as an Indian batsman, cover drove without getting to the pitch of the ball to be caught at second slip for 49. It is a lacuna that has crept into his game in recent years and one he has failed to rectify.
The former Indian captain’s all-purpose angled stance makes it a little more difficult for his left foot to reach the line of deliveries pitched slightly wide of the off-stump. Perhaps when he was younger and did not have a lower back issue, he possessed the athleticism to ensure his bat met the ball in the middle. Not so in recent years; not against better bowling in non-subcontinental conditions.
For India to conjure an unlikely victory — having played catch-up from Day 1 — both Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane needed to score mammothly. They were the last of the specialist batsmen not back in the pavilion.

Addressing the media here, he said: "The team that plays good cricket over five days will win. I fully believe if we play good cricket – we have the players, we have the ability – if we take 20 wickets and make runs, we can win this match."
That could be construed as stating the obvious. But he went on to say: "That there’s no hype (about India’s prospects) is a good thing."
An encouraging weather forecast for the World Test Championship final at The Oval in south London – England’s oldest international cricketing venue, where the first Test was held in 1880 – has provided a psychological boost to the Indian team, confronted as they are with the challenge of having to compete at the climax of cricket’s most prestigious championship without the benefit of match practice in English conditions.
It was a wet spring; so, there is the likelihood of residual moisture on the pitch.

It was a wet spring; so, there is the likelihood of residual moisture on the pitch. On the other hand, the recent and anticipated sunshine could dry the track, without quite hardening it to generate disconcerting bounce. Last week in the England versus Ireland test at Lord’s north of the British capital’s River Thames, the wicket eased into a somewhat flat surface from the second day onwards.
India are handicapped by the unavailability of Jasprit Bumrah, Kannaur Lokesh Rahul and Rishabh Pant due to injuries. At the same time, it’s clear that five batsmen, an all-rounder, a wicket-keeper and four bowlers will constitute the playing XI. Speculation over who will stand behind the stumps is perhaps fanciful, since Kona Srikar Bharat is not only a better exponent with the gloves than Ishan Kishan, but has played at the highest level, that too, against Australia, whereas his rival...

Speculation over who will stand behind the stumps is perhaps fanciful, since Kona Srikar Bharat is not only a better exponent with the gloves than Ishan Kishan, but has played at the highest level, that too, against Australia, whereas his rival...

Mumbai, June 1 (Ians) Three days after leading Chennai Super Kings to their fifth Indian Premier League (Ipl) title in Ahmedabad, talismanic captain Ms Dhoni has undergone a successful surgery on his knee which troubled him throughout the recently-concluded tournament.
As per a report in Cricbuzz, the operation went well and Dhoni, the former India skipper is, perfectly fit. It added that he will be staying in the hospital for a couple of more days before being discharged.
“I spoke to him after the operation. I cannot explain what the surgery is about but we have been told it is a key-hole surgery. He sounded fine in our conversation,” Csk CEO Kasi Viswanathan was quoted as saying in the report.
Dhoni had played the entire Ipl 2023 season for Chennai with a left knee issue which was also spotted to be heavily strapped. It meant that he came out to bat at...

Dubai, May 31 (Ians) Former England skipper Nasser Hussain has picked only one specialist spinner in the combined Test XI he would select from the two teams set to meet in the World Test Championship final.
Hussain could find room for only one tweaker in a combined Test XI ahead of their rematch in the Icc World Test Championship final in London.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took a combined 47 wickets as India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on home soil, while Australia spinners Nathan Lyon and newcomer Todd Murphy were also a threat with 36 scalps apiece.
Lyon (81) and Ashwin (61) were also among the leading wicket-takers across the Wtc cycle, but only one spinner from the two teams could earn a spot in the former England skipper’s combined Test XI.
“If the World Test Championship Final was in the subcontinent or India, I might go Jadeja at six. But I’m not,...

New Delhi, May 25 (Ians) Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has picked K.S. Bharat as his choice for India’s wicketkeeper ahead of the World Test Championship (Wtc) Final against Australia at The Oval from June 7-11, citing the edge he has with his extensive experience of keeping wickets in first-class cricket.
Bharat was the wicketkeeper for India in this ye’r’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy series with Rishabh Pant still recovering from injuries suffered in a serious car accident last year. Bharat got mixed results with bat and gloves as India won the series 2-1 to enter their second straight Wtc final.
Apart from him, left-handed wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan is there, drafted only after K.L. Rahul was ruled out due to a right thigh injury. “I think Bharat will be a pretty straightforward choice because playing Ishan Kishan in his debut and a Test match straight in the World Test Championship Final...

New Delhi, May 24 (Ians) Skipper Rohit Sharma has praised the character shown by individuals in India’s journey to the Icc World Test Championship 2023 final but feels that the job is not done yet and they have to get the best result in the summit clash against Australia.
India will take Australia on at The Oval in the final of the 2021-2023 cycle of the World Test Championship at The Oval, London from June 7 to 11.
“After the World Test Championship [2021 Final] in Southampton, we quickly had to regroup and get ready for the next cycle. I thought in that cycle we played some really, really tough cricket. We were challenged a lot of times and I thought to come out of that was obviously going to take a lot of character from not just a few individuals, but everyone,” Rohit said in a video released by Bcci.

New Delhi, May 24 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri reckons the Rohit Sharma-led side could include both Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the playing eleven for the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia, set to be played at The Oval from June 7-11.
Apart from ace off-spinner Ashwin and top-ranked all-rounder Jadeja in the 15-player squad, India also have the services of left-arm spin all-rounder Axar Patel.
“If the track is hard and dry, you would want two spinners to play for sure. I think it goes a lot with the weather in England. I believe it’s sunny now at the moment, but you know, English weather, how it can change in the month of June. So there’s a very good chance India will go with two spinners, two fast bowlers and an all-rounder. That will be the combination. And then there’ll be five batsmen and the wicket-keeper,...

New Delhi, May 21 (Ians) Former Australia captain Ian Chappell said India will be badly affected by the absence of injured cricketers Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant while playing in the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval from June 7-11.
He further expressed surprise at the unavailability of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who last played a Test match in 2018. Apart from the trio, Shreyas Iyer and Kl Rahul are unavailable for the one-off finale due to injuries.
“The injuries to Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant will badly affect India, as they would be outright favourites with these two playing. The somewhat surprising unavailability of allrounder Hardik Pandya also harms India, as he could have provided them with the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle,” wrote Chappell in his column for ESPNCricinfo.
Chappell also feels Australia’s fast-bowling attack is slightly ahead of India when compared while adding that the...

With some of the biggest names in cricket battling it out, fans are being treated to a showcase of skill and talent. However, as with any competition, there are always teams that fail to live up to the expectations.
Three teams — Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings — have been eliminated from the playoff race. Capitals were the first team to be eliminated, followed by Sunrisers and Punjab Kings.
Why did Delhi fail?
Delhi Capitals have arguably been one of the worst teams in the competition this season, finishing their campaign with just 10 points from 14 matches.
The team’s internal struggles in finalising their starting lineup, coupled with underperforming key players, have contributed to their early elimination from the competition, making them effectively the first team to be knocked out.
DC’s batting line-up consists of high-quality top-order batsmen such as David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Phil Salt and Rilee Rossouw.

In Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023, Delhi have won only two out of six home games so far. Their scores at the Arun Jaitley Stadium have made for a mixed reading — 162/8, 172 all out, 128/6, 188/6, 187/3 and 136/8. The Warner-led side, currently at the bottom of the standings with 10 points from 13 matches, will face Chennai Super Kings in their last game of the season at home on Saturday afternoon.
"Look, the pitches here in Delhi haven’t been great, to be totally honest. They are probably great if you have a different sort of setup for your team. If you have a lot of Indian top-order batters, then that wicket will suit the team. But that’s not the makeup of our squad. So, as we saw the other night, where we saw ourselves playing on a traditional, good playing wicket and the ball goes through nicely like it’s going nicely and the...

On May 8, Kishan was named as Kl Rahul’s replacement in India’s squad for the Wtc final after the latter injured his right thigh in Ipl 2023. He was also a part of the Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home earlier this year, being the second wicketkeeper to Ks Bharat. So far, Kishan has played 48 first-class matches, making 2985 runs at an average of 38.76 with six centuries.
"There’s another x-factor added in Ishan Kishan. If you look at the way he plays, he’s probably the most like Rishabh Pant I think. He’s got the potential to bat in the middle-order and if they do play those guys, they should be given the right to go out and play a really aggressive brand of cricket in their way.
The best way India can achieve the best possible result is by being a bit more adventurous with the way they play.
