Spanish director and screenplay writer Mireia Noguera is one of seven female directors teaming up for Barcelona-based production house Corte A Films on the anthology “7 of Hearts.”
Corte A Films is in the financing phase of the film, which is the second project by Esteve Rovira and Gerard Quinto, who directed “7 Reasons to Run Away (From Society),” with David Torras. The film won the Audience Award at the Gaudis.
“Seven Reasons” featured seven darkly humorous stories revolving around protagonists that were detestable, proving the point that sometimes it is best to avoid other humans.
“This new film, ‘7 of Hearts,’ is also composed of seven stories, but what is special is that it will be directed by seven women,” Noguera tells Variety.
The film is written by Soler, who is also a playwright.

Madrid — Finalists in nine categories for the 2nd Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards were announced last week in Madrid’s stunning Casa de América. The awards will be held again this year in the Spanish Canary Islands city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on April 6.
In total, 25 films representing seven countries received recognition on the day in nine distinct categories. Spanish animation bagged 13 nominations, while Brazil scored 7, followed by Colombia (5), Argentina (4), Chile (4), Portugal (3) and Mexico (1).
Having already won best short film at Mexico’s Pixelatl Awards, Carlos Baena’s “La Noria” (The Ferris Wheel) scored the most Quirino nominations with three. Pan-Latin-American series “Paper Port Season 2 – The Lives of Others” and Colombian feature “Tropical Virus” were the only other entries with multiple nominations at two each.

This year’s Oscar race for Best Animated Short is led by Pixar’s China-flavored “Bao” and a pair of DreamWorks projects that launched its new shorts program: the CG “Bilby” and the 2D “Bird Karma.”
Semi-autobiographical “Bao” explores empty nest syndrome. Chinese-Canadian story artist Domee Shi, the first female to direct a short at Pixar, tells the story of a woman who gets a second chance at motherhood when one of her hand-made dumplings come to life. Shi grew up in Toronto and the short reflects her upbringing as the only child of Chinese immigrants. (Her dumpling master mom served as consultant.) Animating the delectable Chinese meals proved the biggest challenge, but story wise, Shi delivered Pixar’s first Wtf moment when the mom eats her dumpling child to prevent it from leaving the nest.
Also from Pixar, story artist Trevor Jimenez made the semi-autobiographical, hand-drawn “Weekends” in his...

The Oscar race for Best Animated Short offers several mainstream studio contenders, led by Pixar’s China-flavored “Bao” and a pair of DreamWorks projects that launched its new shorts program: the CG “Bilby” and the 2D “Bird Karma.”
In addition, Pixar story artist Trevor Jimenez made the semi-autobiographical, hand-drawn “Weekends” in his spare time; former Disney Oscar winner John Kahrs (“Paperman”) ventured into Vr with the Google Spotlight short, “Age of Sail”; and former Pixar animator Carlos Baena conjured the gorgeous, horror-filled “La Noria” with a contingent of online collaborators.
“Bao,” which explores empty nest syndrome, is also semi-autobiographical. It’s from story artist Domee Shi, the first female to direct a short at Pixar, who is currently developing a feature, guided by her mentor, Pete Docter, the studio’s new chief creative officer.

Even though it isn't October anymore, it doesn't mean we can't still feature new horror short films. Take this one, for example, another creepy new horror suspense short that will leave you feeling a bit unsettled. The Collection is a horror short made by three filmmakers and friends: Carlos Baena, Carlos Puertolas, and Rani Naamani. All of them have worked in the VFX or animation industries in San Francisco, and also love to make films on the side. The Collection stars Bob Roden and Carla Westlund. It's a deceptive film with a sucker punch ending, which is what makes it so unsettling. Warning: this contains some graphic violence. Thanks to Carlos for the tip on this. Embedded directly from Vimeo, there's no official description for this short. The Collection is co-directed and co-written by friends/filmmakers Carlos Baena (@Carlos_Baena), Carlos Puertolas, and Rani Naamani (@RaniNaamani). Produced by Elizabeth Ussery...

Every year, the festival wing, appropriately titled El Festival, of Mexico’s Pixelatl – an association dedicated to the creation and promotion of multimedia content – takes center stage as Mexico’s premier event linking students and professionals in animation, comics and video games to the international marketplace. Held over five days in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, about an hour from Mexico City, awards were handed out over the weekend.
Pixar’s Lee Unkrich was awarded the Chinelo in Animation, a career achievement award which last year went to Oscar-nominated stop-motion director Henry Selick, responsible for “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Coraline,” and in 2015 was given to special effects pioneer Phil Tippet, who scored Oscars for both “Jurassic Park” and “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.”
The top prize for a series went to Edino Ferrera’s “Curtis & Bean” a Mexico-Argentina co-production geared towards kids between six and nine years old.
