Take a look at a great Last Starfighter toy line that could have been.
The Last Starfighter is an interesting thing. Released a year after Return of the Jedi brought the original Star Wars trilogy to its conclusion, the film had the potential to become the next big thing in sci-fi.
Things didn't quite work out that way.
Although it now enjoys a fervent following thanks to TV airings and home video, it never quite reached the lofty heights that Lorimar Pictures and Universal Studios had set out for it and underperformed at the box office, and plans for a sequel never took off..
Subsequently, both a video game and a planned action figure line by Galoob was shelved, even though pictures of the toys had made their way into the company's 1984 catalog. Take a look:

This year at Comic-Con, there was a lot of fun stuff going down at the Entertainment Earth booth! For starters, 'Dexter' writer/producer Scott Reynolds hosted 2 live episodes of his official podcast for the series 'Dexter: Wrap-Up' with special guests Julie Benz and Aime Garcia & David Zayas. Several members of the cast were also on hand to sign autographs for fans through out various times during the week. But most importantly, Bif Bang Toys!, the company behind a lot of the 'Dexter' releated toys unveiled a brand new Dexter bobblehead, as well as a collectible 'Dexter' lunch box set, which features a new action figure, blood-slides and a talking key-chain. FEARnet caught up with both Reynolds and Bif Bang Pow! CEO Jason Lenzi to talk about all things 'Dexter' at this year's Comic-Con!

The film adaptation of John Carter of Mars as been widely derided, but reader Jason Lenzi defends its attributes.
Hey Cinema Retro (and Lee Pfeiffer in particular!)-
Jason Lenzi here, I wanted to drop a note and tell you how much I continue to enjoy the Cinema Retro website. I check in on it every other day or so.
Something's stirring at the multiplex right now that's right up Cr's alley: John Carter. Being the classic pop culture experts you are, I don't need to tell you about the history of Carter, it's inspiring storytelling as we know it for the past 100 years, and the dozens of false starts a Jc movie has had over the years. But it finally got made, and then subsequently ignored. Doomed from the start, there has already been miles of coverage given to all the ways the promotional department at Disney messed up,...

In Praise Of… Dune (1984)
As all good geeks are well aware, 1982 is considered a high water mark for genre films. It may not have translated into box office mojo, but that year gave us an unbelievable string of classics: Tron, Blade Runner, The Dark Crystal, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, E.T., The Thing, Poltergeist, and, yeah, Ok, The Secret of Nimh. But I like to remember another special year of Hollywood Science Fiction and Fantasy, one that gets a little short changed in light of that roster of beauties, but holds a special place in my heart: 1984. Orwell’s signature year gave us Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Gremlins, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, 2010 and David Lynch’s much maligned box office bomb, Dune.
Now, once again, I’m not here to go into...

In Praise Of… “Spilt Milk” by Jellyfish
For my inaugural entry on this fine site (sophomore entry, if you count my introduction), I can think of no better example of something I love wholeheartedly (well, nearly) that seemed to pass most folks right by than the second album by the band Jellyfish, ‘Spilt Milk’. While most music aficionados will be clued into the band and their output, your average Joe has no idea who they are or what blissful melodies and sublime guitar pop they were capable of. To those people, I say, that’s just really sad. But fret not! I’m here to help, and point you to one of the best musical secrets of the past 20 years. If you follow my instructions and run out and get a copy after reading this column, you’ll thank me. And your heart and your ears will be thanking you...

In Praise Of…
Greetings, Fred followers. My name is Jason Lenzi, and I do lots of stuff.
“You’re who and you do what?”, I hear you asking already. “And where’s the review of ‘Letters to Juliet’ I was looking for?”. Well, it just so happens, that I was invited to be here, by none other than Ken Plume. And I happen to think that’s pretty, pretty cool. So, ya know, um, leave me alone.
Let me back up a bit, and explain everything. I make my living doing all sorts of things, some of which I can’t go into here for tax reasons. But mainly I work in the entertainment world, as a freelance producer/writer/what-have-you for television. And I work as a voice over artist, narrating shows, doing radio commercials, some animation, etc. It’s nice work, if you can get it, and finally...

Finally, some word on “The Venture Bros.”! Show creator Jackson Publick revealed in his blog that he’s aiming for the second half of season four to hit Adult Swim this coming August. While this seems like a long delay in continuing the season, Publick has good reason for the wait:
“…don’t blame the network. They couldn’t get it on much sooner than that if they tried. Why? Because we suck. I know…when we split the season into two halves last year we promised to have the second half on by spring or early summer of this year. But we got a later start on these episodes than we originally intended. Suffice to say neither half of Season 4 has been easy to produce… In the end, it’ll all be worth it. We think you’re going to really dig these next eight episodes. We seem to...

The little dolls that we were actually allowed to play with in our youth without getting hit by our dads have been returning to toy store shelves. Right Now you can walk into most comic shops and buy retro, Mego styled figures from Night of the Living Dead, Planet of the Apes, and Star Trek. We knew DC comics were soon to follow (via Mattel), but we didn't know Emce was joining forces with Bif Bang Pow to get in on their awesome properties.
