A writer of humorous mysteries, he invented the character Lovejoy
(first name never revealed), an antiques dealer who operates as amateur
sleuth. Gash studied at the University of London and the Royal College
of Surgeons and Physicians, working as a general practitioner and then
becoming a pathologist in England, Germany, and Hong Kong. His first
Lovejoy novel, "The Judas Pair" (1977), earned the Creasey Award from
the Crime Writers' Association of Great Britain for Best First Crime
Novel. He acquired his extensive knowledge of antiques when he was
working as a runner between the London street markets to earn some
money while he was a medical student.
