On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller would be developing a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service. The lengthy writers strike slowed down the progress of the show – but now that the strike is over, Crystal Lake is probably getting back on track, and since Friday the 13th has come back around on the calendar, we thought this would be a good time for us to share Everything We Know About Crystal Lake!
May 2024 Update: Well, we’re back to the drawing board, because A24 has decided to “go a different way” with the material, moving ahead with Crystal Lake without the involvement of Bryan Fuller. The search for a new showrunner is underway. So for right now, it could be said that we don’t know anything about what Crystal Lake will be. We only have an...

Fourteen and a half months have gone by since it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. There haven’t been many updates since then… which isn’t surprising to fans of the Friday the 13th franchise, because we’ve gotten used to not getting any new content. But Crystal Lake might actually make it into production soon! Fridaythe13thFranchise.com reports that the show was once expected to start filming in March of 2024, but due to the writers and actors strikes that brought most projects...

A Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake is coming our way from Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, Friday the 13th franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Unfortunately, any progress the show was making has been put on hold during the writers strike – but earlier this year, Fuller assembled a writers room that spent six weeks brainstorming ideas and breaking down the scripts that will make up the first season of the series. Two of the writers in that room were author Tananarive Due, who has written multiple novels over the last thirty years and executive produced Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, and her husband Steven Barnes, who is also an author and has also contributed scripts to shows like Stargate Sg-1, The Outer Limits, and the ’80s version of The Twilight Zone. A few years ago,...

‘Tis the season of gift giving, but when it comes to books, the choices can be overwhelming. This year has unleashed an endless selection of great options to fill those bookshelves, from fiction to graphic novels to nonfiction. Where do you even begin, you might be wondering?
These 13 books are excellent gifts for you or the horror-loving reader in your life.
Clown in a Cornfield 2: Frendo Lives by Adam Cesare
Quinn, Rust, and Cole are still reeling from their traumas of surviving the Kettle Springs massacre when it seems to be starting anew. It’s a breakneck slasher sequel that doesn’t waste any time getting to the action and suspense. Cesare understands slashers- and, more importantly, slasher sequels- and crafts a strong narrative around the hardened survivors from the first novel. In true slasher sequel style, the body count is higher along with the brutal deaths that hurt.

"In most families, the danger doesn't come from some stranger – danger comes from someone you already know..." Shudder has unveiled the trailer for a horror anthology film titled Horror Noire, a showcase of six different stories of Black horror. "Six stories, one film. Experience the next chapter of Black horror." This is a spin-off feature inspired by the outstanding documentary with the same title: Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (which I highly recommend watching). The six stories featured in the anthology are titled: Daddy, Bride Before You, Brand of Evil, The Lake, Sundown, and Fugue State. The casts include Lesley-Ann Brandt, Luke James, Erica Ash, Brandon Mychal Smith, Sean Patrick Thomas, Peter Stormare, Malcolm Barrett, and Rachel True, among many others. With new and adapted stories by Tananarive Due, Steven Barnes, Victor Lavalle, Shernold Edwards, Al Letson and Ezra C. Daniels. I'm always down for more creative horror!

Update 2/25: Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films have issued a statement about the end of The Twilight Zone series.
We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. We cherished the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented writers, actors and crewmembers. After 20 unique episodes, we have told the stories that we wanted to tell, and CBS All Access was gracious in their understanding of our decision. It was an honor and a privilege to bring audiences a modern re-imagining of Rod Serling’s iconic creation.

Kevin Can F*** Himself probes the secret life of a type of woman we all grew up believing we knew: the sitcom wife.

This Star Wars: The Clone Wars article contains spoilers.
The Clone Wars covers one of the most important moments in Star Wars history. It not only follows the exploits of Jedi heroes like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Master Yoda, and Ahsoka Tano but bridges the gap between the Age of the Republic and the Rise of the Empire. By the end of the series, the Separatists and the Jedi have been destroyed and the Republic has become the first Galactic Empire. Emperor Palpatine and the Sith now rule the galaxy.
For an animated series conceived with younger viewers in mind, The Clone Wars features one of the darkest endings in the saga. Ahsoka’s former clone comrades have turned on her during Order 66 and only she and Rex escape the deadly crash landing that makes up the show’s climax. After being captured during the Siege of Mandalore, Maul escapes to parts unknown,...

If you wish to summon the Candyman, you can either look in the mirror and say his name five times or just wait until this nifty limited edition Blu-Ray is released in the UK in a couple of months.
That’s right, the 1992 cult classic is getting a fancy new home video release courtesy of Arrow Video that’s boasting enough riches for horror fans in North America to maybe want to get in on the action, too. The story of a grad student whose research into the urban legend of a hook-handed killer opens up a world of torment, Candyman is an artfully gruesome little gem that spawned two lesser sequels.
The Blu-Ray’s wealth of bonus features, meanwhile, are as follows:
Brand new 2K restoration from a new 4k scan of the original negative, supervised and approved by writer-director Bernard Rose and director of photography Anthony B. Richmond...

Danger Word is a great zombie horror short that centers around a thirteen year old girl holed up in a cabin in the woods with her grandfather in the aftermath of an apocalyptic plague that's devastated the world. They "meet the challenge of their lives when her birthday trip to a trading post goes horribly awry."
The short features fantastic performances by Frankie Faison (The Silence of the Lambs, The Wire) and Saoirse Scott (One Life to Live). It was directed by Luchina Fisher (Death in the Family) from a script written by Steven Barnes and Tananarive Due. The short is based on their novel Devil's Wake.
I thought this was a fantastic and intense film, and I hope you like it!

The Black Horror Revolution is among us, by way of award-winning speculative writers Tananarive Due and Steven Barnes, whose short film adaptation Danger Word, is set to go into production this Memorial Day weekend. The film, based on a short story written by Due and Barnes, centers on a 13-year-old girl and her grandfather who have survived the zombie plague in his wooded cabin–and how her birthday goes badly awry. When is making a short zombie film an act of protest?
When the heroes and heroines are black. When there is no Sacrificial Negro to fulfill the fantasy that our lives matter less than white lives. When there is no cooning, shucking or jiving. When no black “Spiritual Guide” exists only to ennoble and enlighten white characters. When artists and backers unite to circumvent cultural barriers to tell our own stories.
As authors and screenwriters, we never set out to become filmmakers. But after years of options, pitches and meetings, we realized Hollywood is just a money machine following the ticket-buying habits of America as a whole. It will never lead. It was time to stop waiting for Hollywood to translate our stories to screen.

Last summer, I published a "speculative fiction" piece, specifically on author and screenwriter Steven Barnes (The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Stargate Sg-1 and Andromeda) and his novel Zulu Heart, which is part of a longer series of riveting tales of slavery in an alternate America, to put it broadly. That was my intro to Steven Barnes' work, and, as I said at the time, I wish I'd discovered him much sooner. Barnes is married to author Tananarive Due (My Soul to Keep, The Living Blood) - a name I'm sure many of you are familiar with, and one that has come up twice or thrice on this blog, especially when...
