Mumbai, Nov 19 (Ians) Even as Team India finds itself locked in a nail-biting battle of wills against Australia, diehard fans of Rohit Sharma & Co are turning to Kabir Khan’s Ranvir Singh-starrer ’83’ for solace. After all, back in 1983, Kapil’s Devils had put up an eminently beatable score of 183 in their surprise appearance at Lord’s in the Odi Cricket World Cup final against the then cricket superpower West Indies, yet they came home with the prized trophy.
Pan to Ahmedabad 2023, where we just saw the Australians mount an asphyxiating bowling attack on Team India, restricting them to 240 runs.
Forty years ago, as a generation learnt from ’83’, India too had lost the toss, and was asked to bat first by the West Indies, who bowled out their less-fancied rivals for 183, sending Indian fans into a sulking vortex, just like after the first innings of the ongoing Word Cup Final.

Pallekele, Sep 4 (Ians) Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj picked three-wicket hauls as Aasif Sheikh and Sompal Kami played gusty knocks to guide Nepal to a competitive total of 230 against India in the Asia Cup Group A match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Monday.
On a two-paced pitch that aided spinners more, Nepal put up a much-improved batting display after being skittled out for 104 against Pakistan last week. Aasif, the wicketkeeper-batter, was brilliant in his 58 off 97 balls, laced with eight fours.
After an hour’s rain interruption, Kami during his 56-ball 48 struck a few shots to take Nepal past 200. Nepal were also aided by some erratic bowling from India, who bowled too many short and back-of-length deliveries.
There was also very sloppy work from India in fielding, leading to three catches being dropped in the first five overs and plenty of misfields happening throughout the innings.

New Delhi, Sep 3 (Ians) Wicketkeeper-batter Kl Rahul is all set to be included in India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Men’s Odi World Cup, with Sanju Samson set to miss out on participating in the showpiece event.
As per a report in The Indian Express, Tilak Varma and Prasidh Krishna, currently in Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup, where Samson is a travelling reserve, also miss out being a part of the World Cup squad.
“The selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar flew to Sri Lanka where he met Indian captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid and picked the squad. The meeting took place after the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup game in Kandy which was washed out after the first innings,” added the report.

Pallekele, Sep 2 (Ians) Hardik Pandya made 87 while Ishan Kishan slammed 82 in a vital 138-run partnership for the fifth wicket in a remarkable recovery act to help India overcome a top-order collapse and make 266 in 48.5 overs against Pakistan in their first match of Asia Cup at Pallekele on Saturday.
But as soon as the mid-innings break began, persistent rain, which had caused interruptions twice during India’s innings, came back with greater force, forcing the ground to be fully covered.
With an inspection at 9 pm local time and cut-off time at 10:27 pm, the inevitable happened when handshakes happened all around, implying that the match was called off as rain had the final say.
As a result, Pakistan, the top-ranked Odi side, has qualified for the Super Four stage of the competition, making the India-Nepal match at the same venue on Monday a must-win for Rohit Sharma & Co to enter the next phase of the competition.

Pallekele (Sri Lanka), Sep 2 (Ians) Pakistan’s left-arm fast-bowling spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi emerged as the stand-out bowler by taking 4-35 in skittling India for 266 in the Asia Cup Group A match at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
Though he tested openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, Shaheen was successful after the first rain interruption in India’s innings. Afridi found some movement to beat Rohit twice and finally got his man when the left-arm pacer got one to nip back and hit the top of the right-handed batter’s off-stump through the gate.
In his next over, Shaheen cramped Virat Kohli for room on an attempted punch, to which the right-handed batter could only chop onto his stumps. It also made Afridi the first bowler in international cricket to get Rohit and Kohli bowled in an Odi match in his electrifying opening spell.

Pallekele, Sep 2 (Ians) All-rounder Hardik Pandya made 87 while Ishan Kishan slammed 82 as the duo helped India overcome a top-order collapse and make 266 in 48.5 overs against Pakistan in their first match of Asia Cup here on Saturday.
Under challenging conditions, India were reduced to 66/4, before Kishan and Pandya stepped up in a pressure situation to stitch an important 138-run partnership. While Kishan mixed sensibility with aggression, Pandya was calmness personified and upped the ante after the wicketkeeper-batter fell.
For Pakistan, pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf were amongst the wicket-takers, even though their spinners and fielders weren’t up to the mark. Just when it felt the game would drift away from Pakistan, the pacers triggered another collapse as India went from 239-5 to 266 all out.

Pallekele, Sep 2 (Ians) Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah made a return to India’s playing eleven in ODIs as captain Rohit Sharma has won the toss and elected to bat first against arch-rivals Pakistan in their first Group A match of Asia Cup at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
In the run-up to the highly-anticipated clash, rain loomed as a large threat. Ahead of the toss, slight drizzle meant the ground was covered. But 13 minutes ahead of the toss, rain stopped and covers were taken off.
India have a 7-5 edge over Pakistan in Asia Cup head-to-head record. Saturday’s meeting is also the first clash between India and Pakistan since last facing off in the 2019 Men’s Odi World Cup league stage in Manchester.

Pallekele, Sept 1 (Ians) With the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh game of the Asia Cup in the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium offering a lot of help to the bowlers, India captain Rohit Sharma stated that the side is keen to take the attacking route, but wants to read situations and circumstances for applying themselves a little longer in the 50-over format.
India will be opening their Asia Cup campaign against archrivals Pakistan on Saturday, and Rohit, along with other Indian batters like Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be tested by Pakistan’s bowling line-up, chiefly their pace bowling line-up of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf.

Pallekele (Sri Lanka), Sept 1 (Ians) In the cool and serene surroundings of Sri Lanka, fans from around the world will witness another chapter being added to the India-Pakistan rivalry when the two neighbours clash in a Group A match of the Asia Cup at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
In India’s opening match of the Asia Cup, they will be without wicketkeeper-batter K.L. Rahul due to a niggle unrelated to his right thigh injury, which has kept him out of action after May 1 this year. Though they have a like-to-like reserve player in Sanju Samson, it seems that Ishan Kishan could bat in the middle-order to fill in for Rahul’s absence.
Though Kishan hit three consecutive fifties in ODIs against West Indies in July, the top three of Shubman Gill, captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been set for a long time. Especially with...

New Delhi, Sep 1 (Ians) Ahead of the much-anticipated Asia Cup encounter between arch rivals India and Pakistan, former cricketer Mohammed Kaif shared valuable insights on how Men In Blue can stand up against Pakistan star pacer Shaheen Afridi’s formidable pace and swing.
Kaif emphasized the significance of the initial overs and maintaining a composed approach in the early stages of the match.
“You can practice all you want but on the day of the match, that experience of seeing Shaheen Afridi take his ball, do his swing, and his speed, cannot be recreated in practice. It is good to practice, of course, but that same impression cannot be made. You still need to make the effort, and try to figure out the technique but Shaheen Afridi throwing the ball, walking or running the distance can not be done at practice” Kaif told Disney+ Hotstar.

New Delhi, Aug 27 (Ians) Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden called out his Indian squad for the upcoming World Cup 2023 and made some big calls. Hayden added wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson to the squad and affronted Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.
Talking to Star Sports, Hayden said, “The job which he hates the most is selecting any squad for the tournament. In the Indian context, I would love to see Sanju Samson in the squad. Also India needs more all-rounders than batters so Axar Patel will be a better choice than Tilak Verma.”
The 15-member Indian squad picked by Hayden follows: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Kl Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Ishan Kishan and Axar Patel.

Hobart, Aug 26 (Ians) Former Australia Test skipper Tim Paine revealed the team management is considering to move David Warner from his usual opening position to down the order ahead of Odi World Cup, happening in India from October 5 to November 19.
Warner has gone past the half-century mark in seven of his last 16 Odi innings. In Australia’s last Odi against India at Chennai, they retained the attacking opening combination of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head.
Warner, who missed first two ODIs due to recovery from an elbow injury which ended his time in Border-Gavaskar Trophy early, came out to at number four, in order to deal with India’s left-arm spinners in Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, and made 23 off 31 balls.

New Delhi, Aug 25 (Ians) Former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar revealed his preferred 15-player squad for the upcoming Men’s Odi World Cup, to be held in the country from October 5 to November 19.
In his squad, Bangar sprung a huge surprise by naming left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh in his team ahead of fast-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur. Arshdeep has only played three ODIs so far, but is yet to take a wicket. Moreover, he is not named in the Asia Cup squad.
Bangar was the batting coach of the Indian team when they reached the semi-finals of 2019 Men’s Odi World Cup in England, before losing to New Zealand in the knockout game at Manchester.
“For the World Cup, the way I have chosen my squad is focused on combinations. The combination will be as follows: five specialist batsmen, two wicketkeeper-batsmen, two spin-bowling all-rounders, one pace-bowling all-rounder, one specialist spinner, and four fast bowlers,...

New Delhi, Aug 23 (Ians) Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh expressed disappointment at the exclusion of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal from the Asia Cup squad, saying his presence in the team for the six-team event was necessary and hoped that a return to the Odi side wasn’t closed on him.
For India’s squad in the Asia Cup, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are the spinners in the tournament happening from August 30 to September 17. Notably, all three are left-arm spinners, though Kuldeep is a wrist-spinner, as opposed to Chahal, who is a right-arm leg-spinner.
“The one thing I feel is lacking in the team is the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don’t think there’s any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball formats. Yes, his last few games weren’t good,...

Mumbai, Aug 21 (Ians) The return of Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna has bolstered the Indian fast bowling attack and gives it a healthy look but the problems in the spin department are worrisome, according to former India pacer Karsan Ghavri. Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna have made a successful return from long injury layoffs in the ongoing T20I series against Ireland, which has also earned them a call-up for the Asia Cup to be held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
“It’s good news (for the Indian team) that both Bumrah and Krishna are looking fit and right now, you know, are playing in Ireland. New Delhi, Aug 21 (Ians) Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s exclusion from India’s 17-member squad for the upcoming 50-over Asia Cup came as a surprise to many. With India set to play their Asia Cup matches in Sri Lanka, many expected that with pitches favouring spinners, they could pick four spinners.
But when the squad was announced in a press conference on Monday, Chahal’s name was missing, with India’s bowling composition being three spinners in Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja, apart from six fast-bowling options. Asked about Chahal’s exclusion, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said it was difficult to have two wrist-spinners in the team, with Kuldeep being ahead of him.
“He is another terrific performer for India. But sometimes it is the balance of the team or the team combination. Axar (Patel) has done really well, and he can bat as well. Kuldeep (Yadav) has had a fantastic run.

New Delhi, Aug 21 (Ians) Right-handed batter K.L. Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been selected in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, happening from August 30 to September 17, after recovering in time from a right thigh and back injury respectively.
In a press conference held in New Delhi on Monday, India’s chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar announced the 17-member Asia Cup squad, handing young middle-order left-handed batter Tilak Varma a maiden Odi call-up. Varma has so far been capped in T20Is but is yet to make his Odi debut.
Rahul has been out of action since injuring his right thigh during his team Lucknow Super Giants’ match in Ipl 2023 against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 1, when he was chasing the ball to stop a boundary in the second over.
It was later revealed on May 5 that Rahul has suffered a significant tear to a tendon in the right thigh and underwent surgery.

Mumbai, Aug 11 (Ians) India skipper Rohit Sharma has explained as routine workload management, his absence and that of senior batter Virat Kohli, from the white-ball series against West Indies.
Rohit Sharma played the first Odi but was absent from the next two games and the subsequent T20I series in West Indies.
With him ‘resting’, Hardik Pandya led the team in the next two Odi matches of the series that India won 2-1 and is currently captaining the team in the five-match T20I series, in which the Men in Blue are trailing 1-2 going into the fourth and fifth matches in Florida. Both of them will also miss the three-match T20I series against Ireland as Hardik Pandya will lead the squad again.

In less than two months, the biggest cricket tournament will be held in India, the World Cup 2023. India’s victories in 1983 and 2011 are the two milestone performances that are etched in the minds of millions of Indian cricket followers.
The effect and the halo of those victories under two legendary and brilliant Indian cricketers, Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, are moments of joy and pride that India revels in, even today.
The Wankhede Stadium was the venue of that glorious hit into the stands by Dhoni in 2011 for a victory, a shot that made Indian cricket finally believe in its potential as world-beaters.

Guyana, Aug 6 (Ians) Yuzvendra Chahal, who has been one of India’s most successful spinners, is not able to find a regular spot in the side in recent times but it doesn’t bother him as he feels that team combination is the top priority and it’s not something new.
The 33-year-old spinner, who didn’t get the opportunity to play a single match in the three-match Odi series, bounced back and made his mark in the first T20I, removing openers Brandon King and Kyle Mayers to finish with figures of 2/24.
The leg-spinner insists he hasn’t thought too far ahead on a personal front given the imminent Asia Cup and World Cup campaigns (both Odi competitions), instead focusing on the importance of finding the ideal XI, irrespective of if he fits in.
“At present I need to perform well in the four matches. I think about one step at a time.
The 33-year-old spinner, who didn’t get the opportunity to play a single match in the three-match Odi series, bounced back and made his mark in the first T20I, removing openers Brandon King and Kyle Mayers to finish with figures of 2/24.

New Delhi, Aug 6 (Ians) With exactly two months to go for the 2023 Odi World Cup, hosts India are still trying to figure out their best possible 15 men for the mega event and there are discussions around seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s inclusion in the squad as well.
The 36-year-old, who has not played a 50-over game in 18 months, was not part of India’s Odi squad for the recently concluded three-match series against West Indies. However, he could still be considered for the Odi world given his versatility.
A great thinker of the game, Ashwin could ball at any stages of an Odi match, is a more than handy batter lower down the order and has years of experience behind. An Indian Express report had recently said that Ashwin’s name is being discussed between the selectors and team management as they want variety in their spin department.

New Delhi, Aug 3 (Ians) Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that one major difference in the build-up of the 2023 Men’s Odi World Cup as compared to the preparation undertaken by the 2011 tournament-winning team, has been the significantly lesser time of playing matches as a cohesive unit.
After the end of 2007 Odi World Cup and before the start of the 2011 edition, India had played 118 ODIs. With the 2023 World Cup being just over two months away, India have played just 57 matches after the end of the 2019 edition in England. Moreover, India has played 42 ODIs since the start of 2021, with 44 players being tried out, highlighting that a settled combination hasn’t been achieved yet.
“There is one significant difference in the build-ups of 2011 and 2023 World Cups, which is the amount of T20 cricket being played. I still remember we were very reluctant to play T20 cricket even after winning the inaugural T...

New Delhi, August 1 (Ians) Kuldeep Yadav’s re-emergence in Odi cricket for India has been one of the biggest plus points in the team’s build-up to the all-important Men’s Odi World Cup, set to be held in home conditions from October 5 to November 19.
Since 2022, after recovering from a knee surgery, Kuldeep has featured in 18 matches for India in 50-overs format, picking 32 wickets while averaging 21.43 and economy rate of 5.01, while stepping up to be an integral figure to pick wickets in the middle overs.
More recently, Kuldeep bamboozled West Indies batters in the first Odi at Kensington Oval, taking a stunning four for six in only three overs, before taking 1-30 in the second game. Former India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha believes Kuldeep’s clarity over his role and plan is helping him excel in ODIs.

Bridgetown (Barbados), July 30 (Ians) A disciplined bowling effort led by three-fers from Gudakesh Motie (3/36) and Romario Shepherd (3/37), followed by a fine half-century from Shai Hope (63 not out) helped West Indies draw level the three-match series 1-1 with a convincing six-wicket win over India in the second Odi, here on Saturday.
Opener Ishan Kishan (55) struck his second successive half-century but India failed to capitalise on a good start on a difficult pitch that offered variable bounce to be all out for 181 in 40.5 overs.
In reply, West Indies chased down the target in 36.4 overs with six wickets in hand, courtesy of a steady 91 not out stand between Hope and Keacy Carty (48 not out). This was West Indies first Odi win against India in last ten matches
Chasing a small total, Kyle Mayers was off the blocks quickly, driving and flicking India’s new-ball pair of Hardik Pandya and Mukesh Kumar before Brandon King joined in,...

Bridgetown (Barbados), July 29 (Ians) Ishan Kishan (55) struck his second successive half-century but India failed to capitalise on a good start on a difficult pitch that offered variable bounce to be all out for 181 in 40.5 overs in the second Odi against West Indies here on Saturday.
In a match that was twice interrupted by rain but did not lose any overs, India made a hash of things after the visitors were off to a good start thanks to opener Ishan Kishan, who struck a run-a-ball 55, his second after the 52 in the first match that India won.
Kishan and Shubman Gill raised 90 runs for the opening wicket but the West Indies capitalised on the juice offered by the wicket that was slow but offered bounce too. Romario Shepherd (3-37) and Gudakesh Motie (3-36) were the best West Indies bowlers while Alzerri Joseph claimed 2-35 in seven overs. The West Indies also fielded well,...

Bridgetown (Barbados), July 29 (Ians) West Indies skipper Shai Hope won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the second Odi at Kensington Oval, here on Saturday.
Hardik Pandya, who was leading the side as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been rested, said Axar Patel and Sanju Samson come into playing eleven as India look to add to their victory in the opening Odi.
“We were looking to bat first. Wicket was up and down in the first half of the last game, so we want to see how they go here,” said Pandya.
“The way we bowled (in the first Odi) was impressive. The way we caught was great, it changed the momentum. Our energy and finishing the game without losing as many wickets have been great,” Pandya said.
West Indies also made two changes, bringing in Alzarri Joseph and Keacy Carty coming in place of Rovman Powell and Oshane Thomas.

Bridgetown, July 29 (Ians) Young opener Shubman Gill has not had the best of outings on India’s ongoing tour of the West Indies. But former India opener Abhinav Mukund believes the right-handed batter’s lean returns on the trip to Caribbean till now, are not a cause for concern.
After Gill got the Orange Cap award for being the leading run-scorer in Ipl 2023 with 890 runs, he has been in lean patch in international cricket. He scored 13 and 18 against Australia at The Oval in the World Test Championship final, followed by recording scores of six, 10 and 29 not out in Tests against the West Indies as a number three batter.
In the Odi series opener at Kensington Oval, Gill was back to opening, but made only seven off 16 balls in a meagre chase of 115.
“I think it’s too early to talk about Shubman Gill’s failure because he has had a phenomenal last couple of years.

Bridgetown, July 28 (Ians) During their five-wicket win over West Indies in the Odi series opener at Kensington Oval, India rejigged their batting line-up in a bid to experiment ahead of the World Cup in a modest chase of 115. That experiment saw Virat Kohli not batting at all, with Shardul Thakur batting at six while captain Rohit Sharma chose to come at seven.
For India, apart from presenting them a chance to seal the Odi series, it is also another opportunity for them to experiment from the second Odi at the same venue yet again and see where various players stand in the lead-up to the mega event.
Ishan Kishan did well as an opener in top-scoring with 52, but could bat in middle-order or maybe India can give a look-in to Sanju Samson. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja showed left-arm spin mastery to bamboozle West Indies, but whether the visitors give...
