Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 15 (Ians) India opener Shubman Gill was fulsome in praise of talismanic batter Virat Kohli’s 166 not out in the third and final Odi against Sri Lanka at the Greenfield International Stadium, saying it is amazing to witness what he does with the bat.
On Sunday, Kohli hit his 46th Odi century, dishing out a batting masterclass through his 166 not out off just 110 balls, hitting 13 fours and eight sixes, making Sri Lanka bowlers look hapless on a flat pitch as India posted a mammoth 390/5 in 50 overs.
On way to his 166 not out, including smashing 84 runs in the last ten overs, Kohli surpassed former Sri Lankan batter Mahela Jayawardene to become the fifth-highest run scorer in ODIs, a list which is headed by legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar. It is also his third three-figure mark in the last four innings of the 50-over format.

Colombo, Oct 12 (Ians) Legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene has said he sees all the qualities of a leader in young allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who has made the cricket world take notice of his talent through his performances in the 2021 Icc T20 World Cup in the UAE and the recently-concluded Asia Cup.
Hasaranga surprised one and all in the 2021 T20 World Cup by picking up 16 wickets to finish as the top wicket-taker in the event. He carried that form into the new year, playing a key role in the island nation’s success in the Asia Cup in the UAE.
The 25-year-old was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with nine scalps and also chipped in with 66 runs, including 36 and 3/27 in the final against Pakistan and guiding the side to the title in the UAE. Jayawardene also drew parallels between Hasaranga meteoric rise and that of Sri Lanka pace great Lasith Malinga.

Colombo, Sep 21 (Ians) Legendary Sri Lankan batter Mahela Jayawardene has said the emergence of teenage pacer Naseem Shah has been the biggest positive for Pakistan along with a fit-again Shaheen Shah Afridi ahead of the Icc T20 World Cup in Australia next month.
While skipper Babar Azam’s form with the bat is a bit of a concern for the semifinalists of the 2021 edition of the tournament, Jayawardene feels the Pakistani quicks, especially Shah and Afridi, are match winners on any given day.
The 19-year-old Shah scalped seven wickets at an economy of 7.66 in five matches during the Asia Cup in the UAE and his big-hitting too — he smashed two sixes against Afghanistan that played a crucial role in Pakistan’s victory — has come in for praise.

Colombo, Sep 21 (Ians) Legendary Sri Lankan batter Mahela Jayawardene feels Babar Azam’s form is a cause for concern as Pakistan prepare for the Icc T20 World Cup in Australia next month, with the former player attributing his below-par scores in the Asia Cup to “pressure”.
Babar managed just 68 runs in six outings in the recently-concluded Asia Cup in the UAE as Pakistan lost in the final to Sri Lanka. It was a rare struggle for one of the most versatile T20I batters in the world today, and the lean patch cost him the No.1 spot in the Icc T20I batters’ rankings.
Babar’s team-mate and opening partner Mohammad Rizwan now holds that top spot with Babar at No.3 behind South Africa’s Aiden Markram.
“The way Babar has been batting the last two years, for him to have a tournament like that is a concern,” Jayawardena told the The Icc Review.

Dubai, Sep 19 (Ians) Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene believes big-hitting batter Tim David can bring that small bit of x-factor that Australia need if he can be used as a No.6 batter in the coming months.
David could make his international debut for Australia during their upcoming three-match series against India that begins on Tuesday. David, who previously represented Singapore in international cricket in 2019 and 2020, had a dramatic rise through becoming a globe-trotter in T20 leagues and performing exceedingly well as a finisher.
“I think he is going to have a free range (to score freely) and the good thing is that there are no expectations on him. Personally, I think that’s a great space to be in. Australia have a very, very good line-up and Tim is going to bring that little bit of x-factor if they want to use that at the No.6 role, which they...

Mumbai, Sep 17 (Ians) Sri Lankan cricket great Mahela Jayawardene feels India have suffered a major blow with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja getting injured and not being a part of the 15-member squad for the Icc T20 World Cup, set to being in Australia next month.
Jadeja underwent a knee surgery a week back and is in the recovery phase, posting messages on social media and keeping his fans updated on his progress.
Jadeja had injured his right knee and was ruled out of the 2022 Asia Cup after playing the first two games in the continental event. The 33-year-old had also missed India’s tour of the West Indies in July owing to an injury.
“It is a challenge (for India). They had fitted him (Jadeja) nicely in that No.5 role. He has been batting really well and him and Hardik (Pandya) being in that top six — two guys who can give...

Mumbai Indians, the winners of five Ipl trophies, said in a statement on Friday that, “Mark Boucher has had a long and illustrious career as a wicket-keeper, batsman and holds the record for the most Test dismissals by a wicket-keeper. Post-retirement he took over as coach for Titans, a top-level cricket franchise in South Africa, and led them to five domestic titles. New Delhi, Sep 14 (Ians) Former captain Mahela Jayawardene on Wednesday believes Sri Lanka’s stunning triumph at the Asia Cup 2022 has changed expectations and the island nation should not look at anything other than winning the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup starting in October.
Dasun Shanaka led Sri Lanka recently won the Asia Cup 2022 after beating Pakistan in the final.
“If they (Sri Lanka) take the confidence of what they achieved in the last (T20) World Cup and then now at the Asia Cup, I think they shouldn’t be looking at anything other than going all the way and winning the World Cup,” Jayawardena said in the latest episode of The Icc Review.
“I mean that’s the attitude to have and this is a group I feel that will play with that no fear and no extra luggage on them either so just go out there and enjoy their cricket and play,...

Mumbai, Sep 14 (Ians) Five-time Ipl champions Mumbai Indians (Mi) on Wednesday announced that Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan are being elevated to new roles as part of the franchise’s central team for its growing global cricket footprint.

Zaheer, ex-India left-arm pacer, who joined the side as Director of Cricket Operations in 2018, has been appointed as Global Head of Cricket Development.
The move comes at a time when the Reliance Industries, owners of Mumbai Indians, recently acquired franchises in UAE’s ILT20 and South Africa’s SA20 leagues. Dubai, Sep 12 (Ians) Several top cricketers from across the world, including former greats from Pakistan, congratulated Sri Lanka for their amazing victory in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday night.
Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram said Sri Lanka came into the final with the mind-set that they had to clinch the trophy.
A collective impressive performance by Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Wanindu Hasaranga and Pramod Madushan led Sri Lanka to the title with a clinical 23-run win. This is Sri Lanka’s sixth Asia Cup title — 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2022. After losing their opening game against Afghanistan, Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and then again Pakistan to clinch the 2022 Asia Cup.
“Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. That was the mantra of this amazing Sri Lankan team so congratulations… better team won (the trophy) in the end,” wrote Akram.

Dubai, Sep 1 (Ians) 2018 Asia Cup runners-up Bangladesh and five-time champions Sri Lanka find themselves in a do-or-die Group B clash in the 2022 Asia Cup at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.
Both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka suffered defeats against Afghanistan, who are already into the Super Four stage and now, sparks have started to fly between the two teams ahead of a virtual knockout match in Asia Cup 2022.
Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka had taken a jibe at Bangladesh’s bowling attack, calling them an “easier opponent” as compared to Afghanistan. “Afghanistan has a world-class bowling attack. We know Fizz (Mustafizur Rahman) is a good bowler. Shakib (Al Hasan) is a world-class bowler.”
“But apart from them, there is no world-class bowler in the side. So if we compare with Afghanistan, Bangladesh is an easier opponent,” Shanaka had said in a press conference after Sri Lanka lost to Afghanistan.

Hamilton, Aug 14 (Ians) Former New Zealand batter Ross Taylor has said in his autobiography that he was “slapped” by one of the owners of the Rajasthan Royals franchise three or four times during the 2011 Ipl season.
In his new autobiography titled ‘Ross Taylor: Black & White’, Taylor revealed the incident took place following a 48-run defeat for Rajasthan Royals against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in Mohali.
“The chase was 195, I was lbw for a duck and we didn’t get close. Afterwards, the team, support staff and management were in the bar on the top floor of the hotel. Liz Hurley was there with Warnie (Shane Warne). One of the Royals owners said to me, ‘Ross, we didn’t pay you a million dollars to get a duck’ and slapped me across the face three or four times.

New Delhi, Feb 19 (Ians) Former Sri Lanka cricket stars Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, who occupy major off-field roles for Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians respectively in the Indian Premier League (Ipl), have blamed lack of clarity on tours programme by Sri Lanka Cricket and lack of bowlers and all-rounders for the absence of any player from the country in the 2021 season of the tournament.
This is the first time that none of the franchises will feature any Sri Lanka cricketer in the Ipl. It is especially surprising since the island country hosted its first edition of its T20 tournament, the Lanka Premier League (Lpl) in late 2020.
"I think there were some fantastic players there (in the Lanka Premier League) and in Sri Lanka currently. But I think the crucial thing is the unpredictability of the touring programme of Slc (Sri Lanka Cricket) where it is very hard to predict...

Chennai, Feb 18 (Ians) The Indian Premier League (Ipl) mini-auction on Thursday provided a few ageing Indian cricketers, discarded by Chennai Super Kings (Csk) recently, a fresh lease of life and a few crores to boot.
Former India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 2.4 crore, an amount which was close to five times his base price. Chawla had played his last game for India in December 2012. He was a member of India's 2011 World Cup-winning team. Csk released the 32-year-old player ahead of the auction.
Chawla's former India teammate and experienced Harbhajan Singh, was picked at his base price of Rs 2 crore by Kolkata Knight Riders. The 40-year-old off-spinner, who has played 103 Test matches and 236 ODIs and has been a member of Ipl-winning Mumbai Indians team, was also released by Csk.
Out-of-favour batsman Kedar Jadhav, who was discarded by Csk, was picked by SunRisers Hyderabad for Rs 2 crore.

New Delhi, Nov 14 (Ians) Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene lavished praise on Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, the two uncapped middle-order batsmen who played an important role in Mumbai Indians winning the Indian Premier League title last week.
"It [their contribution] is massive. The way we picked those teams, we had those two slots. We needed two Indian batsmen who could control and we picked them for Indian conditions as well because we needed guys who could play spin well," Jayawardene was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
"Over the last three years, both Surya and Ishan have developed leaps and bounds. Surya bats at No. 3 and manages a good tempo, hitting more fours which means he is finding gaps and taking less risks. Ishan is opposite is hitting more sixes and being able to get those guys in the middle gives us a good tempo and open up the end overs.

New Delhi, Nov 14 (Ians) Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has said that since the pandemic has made things difficult for the franchise to do regular scouting, they will look towards trading windows to fill any gaps they have in the coming year.
"Usually we have time to do our camps and go through the scouting and find new talented players and see new areas to improve in the squad. But unfortunately, with the pandemic we don't have that much time to do that much planning. I think India is pretty much under lockdown," said Jayawardene while speaking on Sky Sports.
"We are still unsure about whether we will have small or big auction. We keep in touch with owners and franchises over 12 months. Fortunately, we have two-three trading windows so we will see how we can boost our squad and do stuff, because every year you need to develop and have different options,...

New Delhi, Oct 17 (Ians) Mumbai Indians (Mi) opener Quinton de Kock has found his feet with the bat in the last four matches of the Ipl and his importance is underlined by the fact that the four-time champions have won five games on the trot thus far.
de Kock's latest knock earned him his second consecutive Player of the Match award after the 27-year-old South African scored an unbeaten 78 to lead Mi to a facile eight-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday.
Commentators, including his former South African teammate Jp Duminy, were gushing over his shots on the leg side, something that he said was the best he had in his armoury.
"I like to play it and it's nice when it comes off. It's all about keeping my balance, I don't work too much on the cross-bat shots, it's important to stay in line while playing those," he...

Abu Dhabi, Oct 17 (Ians) Mumbai Indians' opening batsman and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock put up a perfect performance with the bat on Friday night, scoring a 44-ball 78 to lead his team to an eight-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr).
But if you ask team head coach Mahela Jayawardene, his show on the batting crease wasn't exactly perfect.
In a video released by the Mumbai Indians on Twitter, the former Sri Lanka batsman is seen telling De Kock to avoid batting in practice pants which the South African did on Friday.
"Apart from Quinny going and batting with his practice pants, everything else was pretty decent," he said during a post-match pep talk in the team camp, leaving others in splits.
"Ok, so don't do that again because the marketing guys are going nuts, people went nuts as well. If it works, it works but we'll sort something else," he said to De Kock.
