Modern English have formally announced their new comeback album, 1 2 3 4, out February 23rd. As a preview, the British rockers have shared the latest single, “Not My Leader.”
1 2 3 4 marks the band’s first album of new material in eight years and was produced by Mario J. McNulty. Mixed and mastered at Abbey Road by Cenzo Townsend, the 10-track effort revisits themes from their ’80s LPs After the Snow and Ricochet Days, like the environment, aging, failed relationships, and love.
Meanwhile, songs like “Not My Leader” are a scorching indictment of modern politics in the US and UK. “It’s like you’ve never tried,” vocalist Robbie Grey sings. “Just to stop the lies/ You’re just wasting all our time.” Stream the single below.
In a statement, Grey explained the inspiration for the track. “I remember first coming to America in the early ’80s,” he said. “We...

Cynthia Albritton, also known as the legendary Cynthia Plaster Caster — the alias that sprung from her plaster casts of famous musician and artists’ body parts, mainly erect penises and women’s breasts — has died after a long illness on Thursday, friends close to the artist confirmed. She was 74.
What began as a college art project that fulfilled her “groupie” love for music became a decades-long work. Albritton’s first famous cast was Jimi Hendrix. She went on to document a range of musicians from different genres and eras, including Dennis Thompson...

Cynthia Albritton, better known as “Cynthia Plaster Caster” for the plaster casts she made of rock star private parts, died today after what her representatives said was a long illness. She was 74.
Although unconventional and a self-described “recovering groupie,” Albritton evolved as an artist, expanding from music stars to film directors, eventually adding females. She started her career by making a cast using a dental mold-making substance called alginate, which solidified around the subject’s member and then slipped off as the participant, er, “cooled off.”
In 1968, Jimi Hendrix was her first cast. She later expanded to include male filmmakers in the collection and then female artists’ breasts.
Among the artists who submitted to the process were Wayne Kramer of the MC5 and Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks. Kiss’ Gene Simmons wrote a song called “Plaster Caster” for the band’s 1977 platinum album Love Gun. “The plaster’s gettin’ harder...

Punk pioneers the Buzzcocks unveiled two new songs, “Gotta Get Better” and “Destination Zero,” marking their first tracks since the death of frontman Pete Shelley in 2018.
Since Shelley’s death, guitarist Steve Diggle has taken over lead vocal duties, and “Gotta Get Better” is actually a reworking of a solo track Diggle released back in 2014. In the Buzzcocks’ hands, “Gotta Get Better” is a nice bit of power-pop that finds Diggle driving home the song’s titular affirmation over a blast of guitars and breakneck drums. Of the four new albums here, two feature a modern-rock journeyman in exuberant form and back to work, against extraordinary odds. Another affirms the full-strength return of a great American band, 30 years after they broke up. And they are all rich in the exhilarating — and healing — chime of electric guitars.
There are comebacks in rock & roll, even resurrections. Then there is Scott McCaughey. In November 2017, the singer-guitarist-songwriter of the Minus 5 suffered a near-fatal stroke on the road, erasing a life of songs with his many bands including the Young Fresh Fellows,...

The Joy Division story has been told many times, yet it never stops seeming too bizarre to be true. Jon Savage, best known for his classic punk history, England’s Dreaming, was one of the band’s first chroniclers in the 1970s, but he tells the tale in a new way in his excellent new book This Searing Light, The Sun and Everything Else. It’s the ultimate oral history of one of rock’s most haunting legends, in the words of the band, their friends, enemies and witnesses. Savage...

Nancy Wilson, a genre-spanning, Grammy-winning singer whose career spanned more than 50 years, died Thursday at age 81. Her longtime manager made the news public.
Born in 1937, Wilson grew up in Ohio and began her music career shortly after high school in 1956, working for Rusty Bryant’s Carolyn Club Big Band. Moving to New York City in 1959 on the advice of Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, she began playing clubs while supporting herself as a secretary, and was signed to Capitol Records the next year.
Though she started out in Jazz, she performed in multiple genres including R&B, Broadway, and pop throughout her long career and resisted categorization, preferring instead to call herself a “song stylist.” She became famous in 1962 through a collaboration with Adderley, an album called “Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley” that produced the hit single “Save Your Love For Me”.

Spill a drink and smash the glass for the late, great Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks, one of the most humane, compassionate, emotionally raw songwriters punk rock ever coughed up, not to mention the funniest. He twisted all the gender codes of rock & roll, casually shrugging off the masculine clichés punk inherited, pouring his heart out into three-minute vignettes. “Ever Fallen In Love,” “Get on Our Own,” “What Do I Get?,” “I Don’t Know What to Do With My Life” — these songs were emotionally urgent enough to make his peers sound like drooling cartoons.

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson says it’s the love story at the center of Fifty Shades of Grey that drew her to the project. But for readers familiar with the sexually elicit trilogy, which begins filming in Vancouver next week, Fifty Shades of Grey is no traditional love story.

Rizzle Kicks have told Digital Spy that they believe Huey Morgan "thought it would be funny" to smash a mug during his infamous appearance on Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
The 'Skip to the Good Bit' duo were guest hosts when Morgan angrily stormed off set at the end of an episode broadcast earlier this month.
Speaking to us at a rehearsal for the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium yesterday (November 25), Rizzle Kicks claimed that the Fun Lovin' Criminals star simply made a misjudged attempt at humour after "drinking the whole way through the show", and quickly realised that he was acting "ridiculous".
"I think he was just a bit mashed up," Jordan told DS. "He'd been drinking the whole way through the show and I actually think he thought it would be funny, but then realised how ridiculous it was and then, well, you can't really come back from that.

Ripper Street: 9pm on BBC One
This grizzly Victorian London period drama has flown under the radar with its second series, which is a little unfair because there's plenty to enjoy - not least the performances of Macfadyen, Flynn and Rothernberg.
The trio's latest adventure involves the escape of a convicted bomber and an attack believed to be the work of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. As always with Ripper Street, however, all is not what it seems.
Never Mind The Buzzcocks: 10pm on BBC Two
Buzzcocks' guest host format means that its quality varies hugely week to week. This week's man in the hot seat - Jack Whitehall - should make this week's show a must-see.
This week's guests include Razorlight frontman and indie joke figure Johnny Borrell, Jls's Aston Merrygold, Katy B and The Last Leg's Alex Brooker.

Noel Fielding has denied claims from an alleged Never Mind the Buzzcocks insider that the studio audience supported Huey Morgan when he stormed out of filming.
Viewers of the BBC Two music quiz last night (November 4) saw Morgan smash a mug against his desk and walk off set after apparently becoming frustrated with guest hosts Rizzle Kicks.
A subsequent newspaper report quoted a Buzzcocks show source as claiming that the audience were "mostly on the side of Huey because everything was taking ages to get right and film".
However, Fielding has claimed on Twitter that this was not the case, saying: "The mug was not broken because everything was taking too long to film.
"And the audience where (sic) in no way behind Huey ! They were supporting the Rizzles completely."
He continued: "It was all a storm in a tea cup...I'm sure Huey didn't mean it ! Just got over excited.

Fun Lovin' Criminals and 6 Music DJ Huey Morgan storms off BBC Two quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks tonight after falling out with hosts Rizzle Kicks.
The singer started sulking after Rizzle Kicks used Fun Lovin' Criminals lyrics in the 'Next Lines' round of the competition, a standard practice on the comedy music show.
Watch the video of Huey Morgan's Buzzcocks strop:
Noticing that Morgan was unhappy, Rizzle Kicks asked: "Are you alright with that?"
Morgan replied: "I'm totally alright with that, I just thought you guys might do something different for a change."
The hip-hop duo reply: "It's part of the game Huey... It's next lines mate."
Growing increasingly frustrated, Morgan ends the game by smashing his mug on the desk, with pieces shattering across his desk near teammates Phill Jupitus and Laura Whitmore.
"Huey, it's the game bro, I say a line, you sing the other line.

Blur's Alex James will host a new BBC Two series based around the best bits of hit panel show Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
What a Load of Buzzcocks, which will air in late spring, will look back at pop history over the last 16 years and revisit key years and events through classic Buzzcocks episodes and clips.
Buzzcocks was originally hosted by Mark Lamarr and featured Phil Jupitus and Sean Hughes as team captains.

What a Load of Buzzcocks, which will air in late spring, will look back at pop history over the last 16 years and revisit key years and events through classic Buzzcocks episodes and clips.

Madchester inches towards the West End, Ken Loach demonstrates the wonder of socialism, and Kathryn Bigelow can't tell one London bus from another
Rave on stage
Long shot as it may be – and Trash loves a long shot – I hear there are plans to turn Madchester film comedy 24 Hour Party People into a stage musical. The film's director, Michael Winterbottom, told me that he and producer Andrew Eaton have been toying with the idea for several years and that there is even a rough script "floating around". Steve Coogan is apparently interested in reprising his part as the lead. The show would tell the story of Factory Records, its founder, Tony Wilson, and the rise and fall of bands including Joy Division, Buzzcocks, A Certain Ratio and Happy Mondays. I'd personally love to see some genteel West End theatre transformed into a hands-in -the-air, tops-off sweatbox for a while, throbbing...

This French production swathes Strindberg's naturalistic tragedy in nonsensical Gallic chic
I am all for radical rethinks of the classics. London, for instance, boasts few better evenings than the current Young Vic Three Sisters. Patrick Marber has even provided, in After Miss Julie, a provocative update of Strindberg's 1888 play. But, although it features the redoubtable Juliette Binoche , this French production, originally seen at the Avignon festival, swathes Strindberg's naturalistic tragedy in nonsensical Gallic chic.
In many ways the real star of Frédéric Fisbach's production is Laurent P Berger – a visual artist responsible for set, lighting design and costumes. He has created a rectangular white box filled with sliding panels, swirling curtains and a bevy of beautiful people who might have stepped out of a French edition of Vogue. For the first 30 minutes we see them partying enthusiastically to background music by Blondie, Buzzcocks, Joy Division and Marvin Gaye. We assume...

A Guardian Open Weekend discussion revealed Dreams of a Life speaks to many in its account of the lonely life and death of Joyce Vincent
Yesterday I had the intensely enjoyable and stimulating experience of hosting a talk at the Guardian's Open Weekend event given by the film-maker Carol Morley about her remarkable film Dreams of a Life. Using interviews and dramatic reconstructions, Morley tells the tragic true story of Joyce Vincent, a lonely, beautiful woman in her 30s who had lost touch with friends and family and lay dead in her London council flat for three years without anyone apparently knowing or caring. The precise cause of death is unclear to this day.
Openness was the theme of the weekend, and openness was in many ways the theme of our discussion. The audience was packed with people who had seen Dreams of a Life at least once, and wanted...

Buzzcocks will reportedly play two special shows next March featuring different lineups from across their career. The current band - Pete Shelley, Steve Diggle, Chris Remmington and Danny Farrant - will start the shows, before Remmington and Farrant make way for Steve Garvey and John Maher to recreate the group's classic 1978-1979 lineup, Louder Than War reports. It is suggested that Garvey will then depart the stage and be replaced by founding frontman Howard Devoto. The band will then play tracks from their era-defining Spiral Scratch Ep and songs which later appeared in demo form on Times Up. It is thought that the shows will take place at the Manchester Apollo on May 25 and London's Brixton Academy on May 26. We used to have rules about T-shirts," thisperson reminisced. "You weren't 'allowed' to wear a shirt of a band you knew nothing about or a shirt with tour dates on if you didn't go to any of the shows displayed on it. If the shirt had an album sleeve on it, you had to own the album to wear the shirt. Simple, ridiculous and true, I'm afraid."
Thisperson's nostalgia was prompted by Jude Rogers's article about band T-shirts in last week's F&M. Lots of people were equally moved to dig about their cupboards – figurative or literal – and see what tattered, logo-ridden rags emerged. One thing that evidently caused particular outrage was people wearing rock band T-shirts just because – wait for it – they like the shirt. "I stumbled out of a pub the other week and saw a young...

The Wonky Ratings Stuff: Government-subsidized television in the UK is a mysterious beast, especially to those of us over in the United States that expect solid ratings are all a show needs to ensure a return. It's certainly a huge factor in the UK, but production costs also play heavily into if and how a series is ordered. If I'm not mistaken, because many of the television shows are government backed, a recession can even affect the television schedule (it's why the last few episodes with David Tennant were movie specials, instead of a regular season). The reason why it's taken so long for "Torchwood" to return to the air, for instance, was never its ratings. The matter is one of financing, which is why the UK eventually had to partner with Starz to get the show made. There's also something called the Audience Appreciation Index in the United Kingdom,...

Behind the boys and girls who front our favourite records, there's often someone almost as important lurking in the shadows. Martin Rushent, who died on Saturday at the age of 63, was one such figure. Starting out as an engineer on songs by T-Rex and Fleetwood Mac, he became an acclaimed producer in his own right in the late '70s. He launched his production career helming albums by punk groups like the Buzzcocks and The Stranglers, as well as early Joy Division sessions. But he's best known for his work on The Human League's Dare, defining the sound of an era and winning a well-deserved Brit Award in 1982. Watch the videos of some of our favourite Rushent-produced tracks below. 1. The Stranglers: 'No More Heroes' (1977)

Bill Bailey has claimed that he left Never Mind The Buzzcocks because of the "contemptuous" way he was treated by the BBC. The comedian, who this week released new DVD Dandelion Mind, replaced Sean Hughes on the music panel quiz in 2002 but left the show himself in 2008. Asked how he came to leave the programme, Bailey told Digital Spy: "To be honest, I was basically sidelined from the show. Buzzcocks normally records in October and the BBC moved the recordings forward two months and so it clashed with a lot of stuff I'd already booked. "I'd had a tour of Australia, an orchestra tour and a West End run. They said, 'Could you just cancel them?' I thought, (more)...

Noel Fielding has accused Simon Amstell of 'ruining' Never Mind The Buzzcocks by being too cruel to guests. Fielding, who currently features as a team captain on the BBC Two panel show, said that guests are now reluctant to appear on the programme because of former host Amstell's vicious presenting style. According to The Sun, Fielding said that ex-Spice Girl Mel B had to be heavily persuaded to appear on the quiz, adding: "She was terrified, like we were going to really rib her." He went on to say: "The problem is, I think Amstell ruined it for everyone. Everyone thinks they'll get ripped to shreds." Ordinary Boys frontman Preston infamously walked out during an episode of Buzzcocks after Amstell began reading extracts (more)...

Noel Fielding wants Liam Gallagher to appear on 'Never Mind the Buzzcocks'. The comedian - who is a captain on the irreverent music quiz show - says the former Oasis singer would be perfect for the series because he is hilarious, despite his surly wild man reputation. Aaron Johnson in Nowhere Boy
John Lennon is undoubtedly the most iconic of The Beatles. Regarded widely (though perhaps not accurately) as one of the most important figures of the peace movements of the 1960’s and 1970’s, his mythic status was solidified by his murder in 1980. The truth is, he was a bit of a jerk. He did, after all, abandon his wife and child and did not speak to them for a few years (though Yoko Ono should not receive the blame for this, as she often unjustly has). But the man and the music should be separated, and while his music post-Beatles was arguably better, Lennon and McCartney together proved that the sum is often better than the parts. Photographer Sam Taylor-Wood, in her feature directorial debut Nowhere Boy, takes the audience back further, to Lennon’s teenage years, his discovery of music, first meeting with McCartney, and his tumultuous familial relations.

Sam Taylor-Wood tackles the troubled teenage years of lairy, mouthy John Lennon in her debut. By Peter Bradshaw
Of all Anthony Minghella's legacies to the world of cinema, among the most valuable may yet turn out to be the movie career of Sam Taylor Wood, the artist he far-sightedly mentored when she turned to film directing. Admittedly, this was a career with a dodgy start. I occasionally wake up screaming at the memory of Death Valley, the short piece she contributed to Destricted, the 2006 compilation film on erotic themes, which showed a man masturbating alone in the desert, while making startlingly unattractive gurning expressions. But then two years later, in collaboration with Minghella and screenwriter Patrick Marber, Taylor Wood directed the excellent short film Love You More: the story of two 1970s teenagers finding each other to a soundtrack provided by Buzzcocks.

She was abandoned by her parents and has survived cancer twice. She was a star of Britart, but is now making feature films. She was happily married – now she is happily dating a man half her age. Sam Taylor-Wood opens up to Simon Hattenstone
When Sam Taylor-Wood first read the script of Nowhere Boy, it felt as if somebody had got hold of her guts and squeezed them tight. The story of John Lennon's childhood was uncomfortably close to home: Lennon's mother, Julia, had walked out on him when he was five, just as Taylor-Wood's had walked out on her. A strange coincidence, but hardly unique. She read on. And that's when things got weird. Lennon, who barely knew his father, discovered years later that his mother had not moved away as he had thought – she was living down the road. TV vampire Alexander Skarsgard dedicated a punk classic to an ex-girlfriend he loved and lost while guest DJ-ing on a Los Angeles radio station recently.
The True Blood star's choice cuts can be heard on Kcrw's website and they include tributes to his mother and father, actor Stellan Skarsgard, as well as an ailing pal, but his pick of the Buzzcocks' Ever Fallen in Love came with a great story.
Skarsgard, who is now dating his True Blood co-star Evan Rachel Wood, admits he once couldn't listen to the song without crying - because it was the soundtrack to a stormy romance.
He explains, "I had this girlfriend a while ago, many years ago, and it was a very passionate relationship. I was very much in love with this girl, but, after a few months, we both realised we weren't good for each other.
"It was one of those relationships that we didn't make each other happy, but every time we broke up, we ended up back together and that went on for almost three years... It just killed me. It was really, really tough.
"I just tried to move on and so did she, but we just couldn't... I hope she found happiness somewhere out there.
"Every time after a fight I would just put on my big headphones and I would crank up the volume and go, 'Pete Shelley (Buzzcocks frontman) freakin’ gets it!' In a way, she will always be a part of me, but I don't have to listen to Buzzcocks and cry every day and night anymore. I can actually listen to it now and enjoy it because it's a great song."...

Eventually I realized it was the short that preceded Kisses, titled Love You More, but instead of loathing every minute, I ended up loving every minute. Love You More is a 15 minute short film directed by Sam Taylor-Wood about two high school kids in 1978 who end up together while listening to the newly released Buzzcocks single "Love You More".
