If you are going to do a so-called “hilarious” comedy dealing with cancer you better know how to do it. Unfortunately, writer/director Jennifer Cram, for her first feature film in those jobs, does not knock it out of the park.
Sick Girl which stars Nina Dobrev as Wren, a bit of a mess of a 30ish woman whose spur-of-the-moment little white lie about having cancer spirals out of control, would need a satirist along the lines of an Adam McKay to actually pull off this misbegotten comedy which is simply more cringe-inducing than funny, and Cram, whose previous work has been in Casting just can’t find the right tone to make it work. The premise may have sounded good on paper but it quickly turns into a one-joke idea stretched way beyond its worth. Lionsgate is opening this Friday day and date in theatres and VOD, the latter...

Directed by Sean McEwen, American Outlaws is based on the real-life events of a bank robbery and other associated felonies committed by three siblings, Dylan, Lee-Grace, and Ryan Dougherty. Starring Emory Cohen, Sam Strike, and India Eisley in the lead roles, the film is based on the 2012 case of the Dougherty siblings, who took the police on an 8-day chase after committing a string of felonies. The movie dramatizes certain incidents, but, in the end, it’s a deeper look into the hollow façade of the ‘American’ way of life, where the poor are always treated as second-class citizens, leading to children growing up with a lot of anger and issues in their hearts. Here’s everything that happens in the 2023 action thriller American Outlaws.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced plans Wednesday for 52 world premieres and 78 U.S. premieres spanning a total of 43 countries throughout the 11-day event.
“At a time where there’s a dwindling of movie theater attendance, the role of film festivals has never been more important,” said Sbiff executive director Roger Durling. “At Sbiff, with the 38th edition, our marching orders are clear, to celebrate movies and to nurture and exalt the film community, the artists as well as the cinephiles. It’s a great slate with 43 countries represented.”
The festival starts Feb. 8 with the world premiere of “Miranda’s Victim” from director-producer Michelle Danner. The period piece is set in the year 1963 and documents the true story of Patricia “Trish” Weir (Abigal Breslin), who attempts to put her abuser behind bars after being kidnapped and sexually assaulted at 18 years old.

Producer Johnny Lin has reworked production company Filmula with a mandate to finance two to four movies annually and has greenlighted "Tweakers Delight," a drama directed by Emir Kusturica with a $35 million budget.
Filmula also said that international rights to "Hesher," its Natalie Portman starrer that premiered this year at Sundance, have been acquired by Nu Image in a seven-figure deal. The title will be changed in international markets to "Rebel." Domestic rights already have been sold to Newmarket for a fall release.
Filmula, which recently changed its name from Dreamagine, was founded in 2008 as the producing partner of CatchPlay, a division of Via Technologies and Studio Solutions Group. Filmula has offices in Los Angeles and Taiwan.
CatchPlay is perhaps the biggest movie distributor in Taiwan and other parts of Asia. Last year, it released 45 theatricals and more than 100 direct-to-dvd titles, handling films from Relativity Media and Lionsgate, among others.

Whereas audiences may usually expect a film festival to be comprised solely of artsy dramas and foreign films, Albino Farm is a breath of fresh air as one of three horror films that spice up the Sliff lineup this year. The film was written and directed by Joe Anderson and Sean McEwen. The story follows four college students who venture deep into the Ozark mountains to research a school cultural project. When a flat tire leaves them stranded in a small backwoods town, their adventurous spirit and lack of respect and maturity lead them directly into danger from a secret society of deranged and sadistic redneck religious freaks.

I should probably hate Albino Farm; the Mti Home Video release has all the ingredients of irritatingly shallow horror. Yet as hard as I try to push it away, I have to embrace it. I should make a disclaimer before we continue: I have a perhaps irrational enthusiasm for the foolish-travelers-meet-awesome-looking-mutants-who-eat-people subgenre. From The Hills Have Eyes to Wrong Turn 2…I love ’em all. When I learned I was being assigned a film called Albino Farm, my eyes lit up with childlike wonder.
I was disappointed. Yet I was not entirely let down.

Stacey (Australian star Tammin Sursok) is the kind-hearted All-American girl. Horror cinema has for some time mined folklore for inspiration, whether it be Eastern Europe’s belief in vampirism or Mexico’s love affair with the goat-sucking chupacabra. American filmmakers Sean McEwen and Joe Anderson, whose feature Albino Farm hits DVD September 22 from Mti Home Video, followed suit in crafting their backwoods fright feature.
“One of the original ideas we kept coming back to,” McEwen tells Fango on the set, “was based on an actual legend specific to southern Missouri and the Ozarks about the ‘albino farm.’ There was a good foundation for a story, but it definitely needed a lot of meat put on its bones, which also gave us the opportunity to really take the creative ball and run with it.”
