Pioneering Black architect Paul R. Williams — a favorite of Golden Age Hollywood elite and other assorted jetsetters — designed this stately 1930s manor for opera singer-actress Grace Moore and her husband, Spanish actor Valentín Parera. But the couple ultimately became disenchanted with Hollywood, fled the city and never actually lived in the Brentwood house — legendary actor Tyrone Power and his French wife Annabella were its first occupants, having bought the place soon after it was built, according to the Paul R. Williams Project. This is one of two Williams-designed houses owned by Power; the actor apparently loved the Brentwood digs so much that he commissioned the architect to design him a custom Bel Air residence in the late 1940s.

It was only 2.5 years ago, after an exhaustive and exhausting five-year renovation and restoration, that television titan Shonda Rhimes wrote in Architectural Digest that her three young daughters “will grow up” and “become women” while living in the Los Angeles mansion she scooped up in early 2014 for $8.8 million from sitcom star Patricia Heaton. Indeed, she said loved the house.
Ms. Rhimes, who just inked a new five-year deal with Netflix — it reportedly has built-in bonuses that could push her haul into the $300 million-400 million range — has since developed other plans because the designer-done mansion, sitting on nearly 1.25-acres along on one of the most prestigious streets in the tony Hancock Park neighborhood, has come for sale with a price tag of $25 million. Word is starting to make its way down the ultra-high-end real estate gossip grapevine that Hard Rock Café co-founder Peter Morton reached an agreement to sell his spectacular oceanfront front spread on Malibu’s Carbon Beach to an unknown buyer for a mind melting and record shattering $110 million. So the story goes, Morton was not looking to sell the two-parcel property but the unsolicited offer, brought by powerhouse broker Stephen Shapiro at Westside Estate Agency according to a well-connected snitch, proved simply too good to turn down. Morton, who sold the Hard Rock Café chain in 1995 for $410 million and the famously raucous Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas in 2006 in an all cash deal reported to net him more than $730 million, has owned the smaller of the two parcels since sometime before 1993 and records indicate he acquired the larger lot in 1998 for $3.5 million.

Donald Trump has spent $1.75 million in 9 months of living in the White House, NBC reported.
According to government records, some of the costs accrued include $17,000 for custom rugs, $7,000 for furniture pedestals, $5,000 for wallpaper, and $12,800 for a custom conference table made by the same company that once built a table for former President Richard Nixon — although the company’s website notes that “Nixon paid for the table himself.”

So long White House, hello beachside villa!
Barack and Michelle Obama arrived in the British Virgin Islands on Monday for a much-deserved post-presidency vacation. The former first couple departed Washington D.C. on Friday following the inauguration of President Donald Trump. Before boarding a plane bound for the West Coast, the 44th president joked, “Michelle and I, we’ve really been milking this goodbye thing, so it behooves me to be very brief.” They wasted no time, however, in getting into full vacation mode.

After handing over the keys to the White House to President Trump on Friday, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama retreated to this stunning 11,000-square-foot stucco home in the Palm Springs area of Southern California for a little time off.
Built in the early 1970s by architect Howard Lapham, the home (nicknamed Icha Mayapan, or “exclusive estate”) is a standout example of Mayan Revival design, a popular midcentury style influenced by several Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes from the 1920s, including the Hollyhock and Ennis houses in Los Angeles. The Obamas’ White House decorator, Michael S. Smith, said he has reached out to President-elect Donald Trump’s team, offering to help with the part of the presidential transition that will mean new artwork and furniture at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
“I’ve had really nice conversations and said, ‘Listen, I think that we’re part of a very special club to have the honor to be selected to work on probably the most prominent, most famous house in the world,’” Smith told Time. “I have very much extended my desire to be as helpful and informative and supportive as possible.

When First Lady Michelle Obama was preparing for her family’s move into the White House in 2008, there were a few redesigns that ranked at the top of her to-do list.
“The number one priority for the First Lady was getting Malia’s and Sasha’s rooms and her mother’s room set up,” Melissa Winter, deputy assistant to President Barack Obama and senior advisor to the First Lady, says in the December issue of Architectural Digest. “The most important thing was ensuring the comfort and happiness of her family.”

Drew Barrymore and her boyfriend Will Kopelman dressed up for a fancy evening out in La last night. They attended a fundraiser for the Obama Victory Fund, which benefits the president's re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee, at the home of interior designer Michael S. Smith and HBO exec James Costos. First Lady Michelle Obama was the guest of honor, and she was able to catch up with Michael after he helped to decorate the White House in 2008. The soirée raised over $1 million for the cause, thanks to other A-list guests like Ellen DeGeneres, Vanessa Williams, and Ryan Phillippe. Will and Drew have been hitting the town together regularly, including a special Chanel-sponsored Nrdc dinner two weeks ago. Drew has been dedicated to supporting her favorite causes lately, but will soon switch gears back to directing. She's gearing up to shoot How to Be Single, but first must round out the romantic comedy's cast.

When I went to pick up my credentials on Wednesday afternoon, the Red Carpet for the 83rd Academy Awards was rolled out and set in place on Hollywood Blvd outside the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood, CA. The Architectural Digest Green Room, designed by Michael S. Smith, was also unveiled as preparations for the Oscars continued. When I saw all the set up that had been done, it reminded me of the line from Joe Versus The Volcano – “You’re coming into focus kid…Shazam!” Only 4 days away until the big night.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2010 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood CA.
