This a great blending of companies and material. Canada's sales agents have always led the way internationally and Mexico is our pick of cinema territory on the rise.
Toronto-based sales and distribution outfit Raven Banner has picked up international rights to Rafa Lara’s historical epic Cinco de Mayo: The Battle and will commence world sales in Cannes.

U.S. theatrical is through Pantelion/Televisa/Lionsgate. The film took more than $1 million in its first weekend of domestic release last week.
Cinco de Mayo: The Battle chronicles the story of Mexico’s Battle of Puebla, the most important battle in Mexico’s history. When the unbeatable French army invades Mexico to set up a monarchy, General Ignacio Zaragoza played by Kuno Becker (Goal!, From Prada to Nada), must defend the city of Puebla, commanding a poorly armed and outnumbered troop of men. The film, recounts the bravery of a people pushed to the limit, fighting for their nation, their families and their pride. The film features an all-star Mexican cast (Angelica Aragon, Kuno Becker, Mario Zaragoza, Liz Gallardo and Christian Vasquez). The film was produced by Paco Gallastegui, Rafa Lara and executive produced by Televisa CEO, Emilio Azcarraga.
Today the date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
The deal with Raven Banner was negotiated by Managing partners, Michael Paszt and James Fler and producers Paco Gallastegui and Rafa Lara. The film screens in the Cannes market on May 16.

Telemundo, the No. 2 U.S. network targeting Hispanics, will for the first time premiere in full a primetime novela across the network's digital platforms via a hybrid distribution model before the serial's broadcast debut.
Leveraging MSN technology, Telemundo's programming move centers on "Las Aparicio," a 120-episode soap that will launch in August at Telemundo.com on a new HD broadband player developed specifically for Telemundo and supported by Microsoft.
The novela revolves around a family with three daughters -- a divorcee, a widow and a single woman -- without men in their lives.
"It's a very modern tale about contemporary Hispanic women and how they juggle family, work and love," Telemundo executive vp Peter Blacker said. "It's 'Sex and the City' meets 'Lipstick Jungle' -- but with a decidedly Latin twist."

Back in February in the Morning Brew, Trish told you about the new Mexican television show Las Aparicio, which kicked off last night on Cadena 3 (Channel 28 on Open Television in Mexico and Channel 128 on Cabelvision and other cable services) in Mexico.
The show grabbed our attention (and that of some Ae readers) in large part because of the inclusion of a lesbian character, Mariana Torres, played by actress Eréndira Ibarra. The inside scoop we were given indicated that Mariana would have a "major romance" and there would be some "very hot, hot scenes."
Naturally, we had to ask the woman who plays Mariana to tell us everything. She spoke to us recently (via email) about the show, her role, and how she hopes to make a difference with her positive portrayal of an out lesbian.
Eréndira Ibarra
AfterEllen.com: What can you tell us about Mariana?
Eréndira Ibarra: Mariana Torres is a 24-year-old lesbian.

PARK CITY -- There's an abundance of sex and very little joy to be found in "The Night Buffalo", a pretentious mess that seems interminable even at 97 minutes. Jorge Hernandez Aldana makes his directorial debut with this overheated, melodramatic clunker based on the book of the same name by Guillermo Arriga, who co-wrote the screenplay with Aldana.
The story opens with the suicide of Gregorio, a paranoid schizophrenic and the best friend of Manuel (the usually radiant Diego Luna, looking uncharacteristically constricted and strained). Complicating matters is that both men loved the same woman, Tania (a sensual Liz Gallardo who spends most the film naked). When Gregorio is confined to a mental hospital, Tania and Manuel begin an illicit affair that has disastrous consequences. Manuel also has an unhappy coupling with a former flame as well. The women in the film, all blessed with beautiful bodies, strip down so often it becomes comical and, finally, boring.
Aldana gets wooden performances out of his actors and the story, which cuts back and forth between past and present with the actors playing their younger selves, is difficult to follow. None of these characters seems to have jobs or real lives. Mostly it's just one desperate coupling after another, activity that quickly ceases to be erotic when there's no believable emotional connection.
At one point, Manuel goes to the zoo and shoots a wolf. This act proves, perhaps, that too much sex can drive a person insane.
Hector Ortega's shaky, handheld camerawork is overused. A throbbing, dissonant soundtrack is a further assault on the senses.La Neta Films presentation in co-production with Canana/Fidecine/AC Films...
