Chicago – One of the roots of the sexual revolution in America was World War II (as it was the roots of many social movements). The stakes of life and death in an instant motivates the softest of puppy love to passion. “The Aftermath” takes that time honored emotional intensity into a right-after-the-war romance.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film – adapted from a novel by Rhidian Brook – is set in the devastated port city of Hamburg, which was destroyed by Allies bombers in the mid 1940s. Shortly after the German surrender, the British were assigned to start the rebuilding process, and set up a system for tribunals and construction. Against this backdrop is the particulars of the romantic triangle. Keira Knightley continues her reliable path of deep resonance as the conflicted woman torn between two lovers, and Jason Clarke surprises as the husband in the triangle who values his duty as much as his wife.

It doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Those problems added up to immortal romance cinema for Bogie and Bergman in Casablanca. Things are not so lucky for the love triangle at the core of The Aftermath, a stuffy, soggy slog of a movie that fails to generate sparks or a lick of dramatic sense. Director James Kent — striking out after his striking debut with Testament of Youth — adapts Rhidian Brook’s...

Keira Knightley plays a lonely military wife who falls for a German widower in a tragi-romantic drama set uneasily amid Hamburg’s smouldering ruins
Suite Française meets Lady Chatterley in this hammy and preposterous 1940s romantic drama set in the aftermath of the second world war, the “aftermath” alluding also to the consequences of matching tragedies in the lovers’ personal lives.
Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgård and Jason Clarke give honest performances, directed confidently enough by James Kent, working from Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse’s adaptation of the 2013 bestseller by Rhidian Brook. There are some nice enough moments. I liked the German and the Brit agreeing that the “Deutsche See” and the “North Sea” are the same thing and that it is “all the same sea in the end”.

As elegant post-war dramas about dark, romantic entanglements go, “The Aftermath” delivers the bare minimum. Director James Kent’s adaptation of Rhidian Brook’s novel is a sweeping, gorgeous, and even wistful look at the clandestine romance between the wife of a British colonel (Keira Knightley) and a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) in the aftermath of the Allied forces’ victory. But none of the pretty imagery or impassioned lovemaking can break free of a mopey old formula that sits on every scene with the same schematic quality that makes its weary setting so familiar from the start.
Which is not to mean it lacks historical vision. Set in Hamburg in 1945, as British forces sort through the ruins and overtake German property, “The Aftermath” finds Knightley’s Rachael Morgan arriving in the city to reunite with her estranged husband Lewis (a stern Jason Clarke). Less widely seen (and acclaimed) than it deserved to be, James Kent’s debut feature “Testament of Youth” was one of the great recent love-in-wartime dramas, translating the intimate romance and sprawling human tragedy of Vera Brittain’s Wwi memoir with a grace and heft worthy of its David Lean allusions. Four years on, it’s not hard to see why Kent was enlisted for “The Aftermath,” which aims for a similar old-school blend of stiff-upper-lipped heartbreak and grand classical sweep amid the ruins of another world war — albeit from material a bit thinner than Brittain’s. Paring Rhidian Brook’s 2013 bestseller down to a straightforward love triangle between Keira Knightley and Jason Clarke’s troubled English married couple and the dreamy German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) whose house they’ve requisitioned in postwar Hamburg, Kent’s film settles efficiently but less enthralingly into rainy-afternoon soap territory.

From the wreckage of Allied-bombed Hamburg comes the post-World War II romantic triangle “The Aftermath,” and suddenly the problems of three little people amount to a hill of blah in this handsomely mounted, but hopelessly machine-pressed game of who are sacrificing more to escape the rubble of shattered desire and lingering grief.
Director James Kent’s adaptation of Rhidian Brook’s 2014 novel — about a ghost-like Germany, a broken British marriage, and the healing powers of a passionate thaw — has the unfortunate quality of a hot-blooded soap grafted onto rather than merged with a historical-political drama. The result exhibits little feel for how each genre’s particular needs might interfere with the other’s, or how the film’s trio of capable actors might be properly utilized.

Sneak Peek new images of actress Keira Knightley in the April 2018 issue of "Elle" (Canada) magazine, wearing Chanel, photographed by Liz Collins:
"I was meant to be named 'Kiera', after a Russian ice skater who was on the TV one day," said Knightley.
"My dad fancied her and nicked her name for me.
"But it was my mum who went to register my birth, and she accidentally spelled 'ei' instead of 'ie' because my mum's crap at spelling. Apparently, when she came back he said: 'What The Fuck? You’ve spelt her name wrong!' What were they going to do, though? Once it’s on the piece of paper, it’s on the piece of paper. And that’s me. A spelling error..."
Knightley, the official 'face' of Chanel since 2007, continues to rep the company with 'Coco Mademoiselle' fragrances.
New films for Knightley include an adaptation of "The Other Typist" by Suzanne Rindell.

Give me a handsomely mounted period drama and I’m already halfway there, and with Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgård and Jason Clarke lined up for “The Aftermath,” it looks like this is going to be right in my wheelhouse.
Based on the best-selling book by Rhidian Brook, and directed by James Kent (“Testamant Of Youth“), the story follows a young woman whose post-war reunion with her husband takes an unexpected turn.

As Fox Searchlight enters negotiations to acquire the pic, Variety brings word that Jason Clarke, Keira Knightley and Tarzan himself Alexander Skarsgard have become attached to post-wwii drama, The Aftermath.
Ridley Scott’s production banner Scott Free is behind the adaptation, one based on Rhidian Brook’s bestseller that first hit store shelves three years ago. Should a deal place, it’s understood Fox has zeroed in on James Kent (Testament of Youth) to take the reins, working from a script produced by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel of Race fame.
Though it’s early days, attracting Clarke, Knightley and Skarsgard to the project is no mean feat, and the fact that The Aftermath looks set to hit the ground running is certainly an endorsement of Brook’s work. It’s set in the post-war Germany of ’46, where “a woman, Rachael, arrives with her only remaining son in the ruins of Hamburg.

If you’re in the UK you may have seen this DVD on the shelf of your local store over the last week or so but I’ve held off on this review until now for reasons that will hopefully become obvious further down.
Africa United came out last year and our original HeyUGuys review by Lisa Giles-Keddie said “it’s refreshing to watch a film that champions the power of positive thought, fuelling the story from beginning to end. It is a vibrant and positively charming journey that captures the true, fighting spirit of Africa, it is an amazing movie.”. I’m certainly not going to disagree with Lisa as I love the film with its colourful characters and places plus the inspiring story but also because of the fact that it’s a film that’s not afraid to look at the uncomfortable issues that exist in the...

Paranormal Activity 2; Easy A; Africa United; Due Date; Travellers
Oren Peli's (surprisingly un)original frightener Paranormal Activity was made for a reported $15,000 and scared hundreds of millions of dollars out of audiences who had presumably never seen The Blair Witch Project. Tod Williams's fatuous prequel, Paranormal Activity 2 (2010, Sony, 15), cost nearly 200 times as much and will surely bore the pants off even the most wide-eyed horror dilettante with its dreary, repetitive rehashing of an already derivative formula. Following an apparent burglary, a young family (including the diehard hackneyed horror triumvirate of teenage daughter, baby and dog) have their house fitted with security cameras which promptly start recording things going bump in the night. Or not.
Long periods of unbelievable boredom ensue, interspersed with sudden, loud, banging noises and the sight of kitchenware moving in a mysterious way, a tedious trope which repeats ad infinitum. Whereas Peli managed...

The New York African Diaspora Film Festival begins in about 2 1/2 weeks – November 26th – and will run for about 2 1/2 weeks, through December 14th.
Starting today, I’ll profile at least 1 film screening at the upcoming festival, until it actually begins.
The opening night film is one that we’ve mentioned previously on this blog. As a matter of fact, it recently screened at the London Film Festival where our own MsWOO saw it, and reviewed it for Shadow And Act (read her critique Here). The film is titled Africa United, and its story goes… Africa United tells the story of three Rwandan kids who walk 3000 miles to the Soccer World Cup in South Africa. Using a sack load of ingenuity and sass (and a World Cup wall chart for a map), they set off in pursuit of an unlikely dream, attracting followers along the way, who help them negotiate through a series of glorious,...

Rhidian Brook took his family on an epic journey through Aids-torn Africa. Their experiences inspired him to write a film that's been dubbed the new Slumdog Millionaire
In 2005, I was writing an episode of Silent Witness, the BBC drama, when I received an email from a friend asking me if I would consider writing a book about the Salvation Army's response to HIV/Aids around the world. I knew little about Aids beyond the grim statistics and not much more about the Salvation Army beyond soup and trombones. I was about to bin the email when I made the mistake of mentioning it to my wife, Nicola, who suggested I follow it up.
A few days later, I called Dr Ian Campbell, who was the Salvation Army's international health programme consultant and something of a legend in the world of HIV/Aids response – one of the first people to see...

In the eyes of the world, the tiny country is a tragedy. The film-maker wants to tell the new story of Rwanda
Although I was made in Taiwan, and my mother was born and spent her childhood in Rwanda, I grew up in Yorkshire and look about as European as they come. My father is Scottish, but his passion is China. He is tall and white but speaks perfect Mandarin, and would rather be in Asia than anywhere else. That is his heart and his home.
Although I visited Rwanda for the first time aged 18, I am also Rwandan – proudly eligible for their passport, thanks to my mother's birth. And no one knows more than Rwandans about how much an accident of birth can cost.
Rwanda, in the eyes of the world, is a tragedy: a tiny country that tore itself apart 15 years ago. After that first trip in 1997, I...

A new movie starring five young unknowns is tipped to match the success of Slumdog Millionaire
Among the recent flurry of mainstream films set in Africa there has been an inescapable common thread. Blood Diamond, The Last King of Scotland, Shooting Dogs and The Constant Gardener: all well-received, all acclaimed, and all with white protagonists heroically engaging with a dangerous and savage continent.
That pattern may be about to change. Later this month five young, unknown Africans will walk up the red carpet in London's Leicester Square to the British premiere of a film which discards the usual Hollywood stereotypes.
Africa United, dubbed "the rookies' project" by its makers, features a cast of children aged 11 to 15 who had never acted before; a writer producing his first script and a director making her first feature film. It has already been compared favourably to Slumdog Millionaire, and indeed, is being distributed by Pathe,...
