Sauron’s rise in Season 2 of “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will begin August 29 when the new installment of Amazon Prime Video’s fantasy series based on J.R.R. Tolkien IP arrives on the streamer. Prime Video released a teaser trailer and behind-the-scenes featurette Monday. Based on parts of Tolkien’s posthumous “The Silmarillion,” the series has a planned arc of five seasons.
What is ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 about?
The drama series takes place thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” books with an ensemble cast of familiar faces mixed with new characters. Set in the not-for-long peaceful Second Age of Middle Earth, the show marks a first-time venture into the adaptation of Tolkein’s history of the fabled period. [The following story contains spoilers for No One Will Save You.]
During an uneventful weekend at the domestic box office, Brian Duffield’s alien invasion thriller No One Will Save You became the talk of social media. The Hulu release, which features virtually no dialogue, is another critical win for Duffield following his critically acclaimed directorial debut, Spontaneous, and it’s even received Guillermo Del Toro and Stephen King‘s stamps of approval.
The Kaitlyn Dever-led sci-fi film begins with the high concept of an alien home invasion, but eventually widens its scope into something more affecting on a character level. Dever’s Brynn Adams accidentally killed her 12-year-old best friend a decade earlier, and her small-town community of Mill River has turned her into persona non grata ever since, resulting in a life of alienation inside her late mother’s home.

One of the most inventive sci-fi films released by a mainstream outlet in recent memory, Brian Duffield’s “No One Will Save You” wastes little time before showing its audience that they’re watching something different. The film follows Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever), an agoraphobic young homebody who is perfectly content to hide out in her late mother’s ornate house to avoid confronting her traumas. But when faced with a break-in from an unexpected alien visitor, she’s forced to spring into defense mode to protect her home.
It would be natural to expect a lengthy chase sequence before building up to a final showdown that reveals the identity of her extraterrestrial assailant. But Duffield takes the opposite approach, placing Brynn face-to-face with a stereotypical gray alien in the film’s opening minutes. In an interview with IndieWire, Duffield explained why he decided to blow up the conventional alien invasion...

As a prequel to “Game of Thrones,” “House of the Dragon” could be an awards magnet (and has already won Best Drama Series at the Golden Globes). But despite “Thrones” winning more than two dozen Visual Effects Society Awards over the course of its run, “Dragon” was upset by “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” for Best Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode. Next, the two fantasy epics will face off at the February 18 Art Directors Guild Awards. Can “Lotr” keep “Hotd” at bay again?
As of this writing “Dragon” leads with 82/25 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Jim Clay is the nominated production designer for the premiere episode “The Heirs of the Dragon” in the category for one-hour single-camera fantasy series. This would be Clay’s first Adg victory, but “Game of Thrones” previously won five Adg Awards during its run, so...

Costume designer Kate Hawley and production designer Ramsey Avery were thrilled to join a talented team of creators and artists for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” Prime Video’s sprawling fantasy series.
“Rings of Power,” with a price tag that reportedly could hit 1 billion both for the rights and the production of a planned five seasons, is the most expensive television series ever produced. The overall arc tells the story of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth in the Second Age, thousands of years before the Third Age of the Peter Jackson-helmed “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy. The first season introduced viewers to elves, dwarves, orcs and Harfoots one of three hobbit races) during a time of prosperity and relative peace.
When Avery first sat down with showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, they had several design goals.
“A lot of high fantasy is stylized.

Designing and constructing sets from scratch is just half of a production designer’s job. Depending on the project, there’s also scouting for location shooting. And sometimes, you can’t shoot as is, like on “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”
“It’s all fantasy, so we can’t go down the street in Auckland and find a place to shoot,” Ramsey Avery tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Production Designers panel roundtable with Matthew Davies (“Five Days at Memorial”), Mark Scruton (“Wednesday”) and Richard Bloom (“Welcome to Chippendales”). “We ended learning how to make a sheep paddock outside of Auckland look like something else. When production designer Ramsey Avery joined “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” he knew the look of the Amazon Prime Video series would have to be a mix of something old and something new. Set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, the expansive epic takes place thousands of years before the events of the J.R.R. Tolkien novels and Peter Jackson‘s Oscar-winning film trilogy, which depict the Third Age, when Middle-earth is in decline. In contrast, the various kingdoms are thriving in their halcyon days of the Second Age.
“It was very important to differentiate our world, our Second Age, from the Third Age in that the Third Age really is about the decay and decline. And the Second Age is to be glorious and looking at all these different cultures at the height of their capacities and their capabilities,” Avery tells Gold Derby at our Meet...

If you've been watching "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," you know that the show is expansive in scope, and that we see several major areas in Tolkien's world in full glory on screen. Creating these fictional fantastical places is a group effort of several different departments, not least of which is visual effects. "All of it is a construction, carefully crafted between props, set deck, set, and visual effects," explains the series VFX producer Ron Ames in an exclusive interview with /Film. "They're all one thing."
I talked with Ames about his work on the series, particularly about some sequences we see in the latest episode, "Udûn," that are certainly massive in scope. Read on for that discussion though be warned:
Spoilers through the sixth episode of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" lie below!

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Episode 4, “The Great Wave.”]
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is the product of an endless supply of resources. For all its grandeur and detail and physical craft on display, there’s one thing that the show has had in the early part of its run that’s almost always a lot harder to pin down: timing.
Take the series’ most recent episode, which finds Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) in a verbal showdown with Queen Regent Miriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). With fierce conviction, Galadriel proclaims, “There is a tempest in me that has swept me to this island for a reason, and it will not be quelled by you, Regent.” A hard cut to her being put inside a Númenórean holding cell. Against the backdrop of a real, growing threat, “Rings of Power” still finds room for a well-placed comic beat.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’: Turning the Mines of Moria Into the Halls of Khazad-dûm
It’s hard to imagine now that there are several movies and a TV show based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, but at one point there were very different, competing visions of what Middle Earth looks like. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” production designer Ramsey Avery first fell in love with Tolkien illustrations by the Brothers Hildebrandt in the ’70s and has watched artistic interpretations of the author’s legendarium evolve over the decades, to the point where the work of Alan Lee and John Howe was so central to Peter Jackson’s vision for his “Lord of the Rings” films, they were both hired as concept artists for the series.
Avery’s particular challenge on “The Rings of Power” was to build environments that are both familiar and unfamiliar — some unevolved versions and some much more evolved versions of the...

In episode 3 of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and her shipwrecked companion Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) are brought to the fabled island kingdom of Númenor. We see its giant statues and gorgeous seaside architecture and meet some of its doomed inhabitants. The star-shaped island was gifted to the humans by the elves in the First Age in thanks for their help in the war against the evil Morgoth. In the Second Age, where the series takes place, elves have begun to be turned away from landing on Númenor, and public sentiment has turned against them.
By the time we reach the Peter Jackson "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, the city has been long since destroyed, though we can see its architectural influence in places like Minas Tirith.

You won’t find the Hotel Artemis listed on Yelp, or in any Los Angeles travel guide. The off-the-books establishment was once a posh Art Nouveau landmark, with custom wood accents and beautiful floor-to-ceiling murals in each of its rooms — Acapulco, Waikiki, Niagara, etc. By the summer of 2028, when hotshot Hollywood screenwriter Drew Pearce’s directorial debut takes place, nobody wants to stay there, not even the establishment’s members-only clientele. You see, the Hotel Artemis isn’t a hotel at all but a secret hospital for criminals. Got shot pulling a job in downtown L.A.? Only then do you want to make a reservation with the Nurse (Jodie Foster), who keeps a room ready for just such emergencies.

If you walk into the theater expecting a direct sequel to Cloverfield, you may be disappointed, but I'd expect most audiences to be quite satisfied with the smart, character-driven thriller that is 10 Cloverfield Lane. Economically told from the start, the film moves beautifully. This is a strong feature debut for Dan Trachtenberg, working from a script by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken, and Damien Chazelle, and a beautiful showcase for three very good actors. It is simple, it is direct, and it is impressive. Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) flees her marriage after something happens with her husband, and as she's on the road, upset, she is in a terrible car accident. When she wakes up, she is in a bunker owned by Howard (John Goodman), a farmer, who tells her that there has been some sort of attack on the surface, and they are unable to leave now. There is one other person,...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.
