Great news for all fans of FIFA: Newcastle look set to bring an absolute beast to the Premier League.
Sky Sports News HQ have just confirmed earlier reports from Foot Mercato that after successful talks, Roma striker Seydou Doumbia is currently having a medical at St James Park ahead of a loan move until the end of the current season. FM say that deal will come with an option to buy in the summer.
The Ivory Coast forward previously scored 63 goals in 83 league games for Cska Moscow before As Roma bought him just last January. The 28-year-old only scored 2 goals in 13 appearances before being loaned back to the Russian side (where he scored 11 goals in 17), but Newcastle have obviously seen enough to bring him in to bolster their misfiring frontline.
According to the Daily Express, Arsenal had also made a late enquiry to sign Doumbia, but it...

J.K. Rowling isn't afraid to play a little dirty, getting fans to tweet support for her Scottish rugby team in exchange for some "Harry Potter" intel. Love your style, Jo, don't ever change!
She was at St. James Park for the Rugby World Cup and told her followers, if they shared support for her Scottish team, she'd reward them by revealing the birthday of Harry's godfather, Sirius Black (Gary Oldman).
Off to Newcastle for #SAMvSCO and if lots of you tweet #AsOne to support Scotland, you can have Sirius's birthday! #RugbyWorldCup
- J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) October 10, 2015
Fans responded in force, with one rationalizing that, since Hogwarts is meant to be in Scotland, it makes sense for Harry Potter fans to share support for the Scottish team. Since fans did their part, and her team did its part, Rowling shared Sirius' birthday:

Not too long ago, Black Dragon Press released the first installment in a series of licensed alternative movie posters celebrating the work of cult director Andrei Tarkovsky by artists Edward Kinsella and Victo Ngai. These illustrations beautifully capture the sense of awe and beauty in Tarkovsky’s work, and are easily some of the most beautiful posters I’ve seen released this year. Check out the posters below.
Andrei Rublev by Edward Kinsella
Andrei Rublev by Andrei Tarkovsky is dark, bleak, vast, and quiet. It’s about oppression, corruption, war, and death. It’s about an artist finding his way through an oppressive world and all the trials he faces along the way. There was so much material to draw from for this poster. What I aimed to create was a powerful/quiet image of Andrei Rublev, trapped, but still moving, through a suffocating forest.” – Edward Kinsella

England's wet and foggy Winter weather gave way to lots of sunshine during Easter weekend. On Monday, an official bank holiday, temperatures reached 17ºC (roughly 63ºF), and many flocked to London's Green Park and St. James Park to soak up the sun, check out the cherry blossoms, and even catch a few zzzs in the grass. In Birmingham, residents had their warmest day of the year so far, resulting in lots of outdoor picnics, sunny selfies, and sweet frozen treats. Keep reading to see beautiful photos from England's warm, relaxing bank holiday!

A miracle happened at St James Park last Wednesday night.
Less than 5 months after undergoing his final session of chemotherapy for a cancerous tumour on his testicle, Jonas Gutierrez made an emotional return to a professional football pitch.
Spiderman came on as a 65th minute substitute for Ryan Taylor to the adoration of 50,000 lumpy-throated Geordies inside St James’ Park.
After everything he has gone through over the past 18 months, seeing Jonas put in a typically gutsy display when The Magpies’ chips were certainly down was a joy to behold.
It was a performance that epitomised the man to a tee. We all know that work rate and determination is the name of the game when it comes to Newcastle’s resident superhero and he proved that his devastating illness hasn’t changed things.
He showed a couple of flashes of his brilliant best as he tried to...

Just days after overcoming Man City at the Etihad with a significantly weakened first team, Alan Pardew lines his Newcastle side up to face Liverpool at St. James’ Park, knowing that he needs to keep building momentum.
Liverpool meanwhile are stuttering by their own lofty expectations: after missing out narrowly on the Premier League trophy last year they’re struggling to maintain a top four position, and serious questions are – prematurely – being asked.
Team News
Davide Santon, Siem De Jong and Curtis Good (remember him?) remain side-lined in the long or no-idea-at-all term, and Cheick Tiote is confirmed as out with the calf problem that has ruled him out since he was away with the Ivory Coast.

It has been ten years since Newcastle and Leicester met each other in the Premier League, and the first top flight game in a decade couldn’t have come at a more important time for the home side. With the smallest gap between Alan Pardew’s under-performing men and 20th position, a win is beyond necessary, it is utterly essential, especially with Spurs and Liverpool to come in the league next.
Leicester will not be a push over, by any means: they have been a thorn in the Magpies’ side in the past, including an unlikely 2-0 victory in 1996 that handed the Foxes their first ever Premier League win. Given Newcastle’s wounded state, the Foxes will have a kill in their nostrils, and they should have nothing to fear after making an impressive start to their return to the top flight.

Having ignored the lessons offered by the Premier League’s relegated sides in the last ten years, and how many of them changed their managers, Mike Ashley is going to have to put his hands in his pockets if he is to see Newcastle avoid the embarrassment and financial ruin of a second relegation under the Sports Direct owner.
According to research by The Chronicle – one of the local newspapers petulantly banned for giving column inches to the protests that are now very much a big part of the match-day experience at St. James Park – the average spend of Premier League sides who started badly and managed to avoid the drop is £10m. This summer aside, that is considerably more than the owner has typically chosen to spend on the side, and it’s sadly unlikely that Ashley will invest as much, preferring,...

Great football teams would be nothing without partnerships: Nottingham Forest and Derby had Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, England had Shearer and Sheringham and Manchester United had Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke. These are the pairings on which success was built, and it seems that working within football – with its brotherly bonds and comradeship in battle – is the perfect environment to encourage even closer relationships than working ones.
Sometimes players click together on the pitch in a way that makes them two perfect halves of one identity – like England’s Sas – and others the pair get closer still, their friendships emerging beyond the limits of shared dressing rooms and celebratory high fives.
More often than not, these bromances are a thing of beauty, and in most cases they are hugely successful on the pitch, which is why commentators and fans fall over themselves...

Newcastle United are not exactly known for doing a lot of positive business on transfer deadline day: the last major incoming deal cut in the final hours of any window brought Michael Owen to St James Park, and the less said about that the better. But with a strong summer of building behind them, and the decision to let Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa leave on loan, today surely have been identified as an opportunity to strengthen in two key areas.
What has been clear for the entire summer is that Newcastle need a centre-half and a striker, and have done for some time. So the decision to seemingly let Roma take Yanga-Mbiwa without bringing in cover looks like a ludicrous one.
Just think, if Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson get injured, Newcastle face the awful reality of playing only Steven Taylor as a recognised centre-half.

It’s a long-held cliche that football means something entirely different on Tyneside: as a city, Newcastle is one of very few in England that has the stadium within its walls, and not only that, St. James’ Park sits proudly on the top of the hill as the crown jewel of the redeveloped skyline, so it is little wonder that the club has long been the focal point, both physical and metaphorical for Geordies. They say cut a Geordie open and he will bleed black and white, and though there’s no need for violence, the sentiment rings entirely true: football is far more important to most than politics, or pop culture, and the quickest way to change the mood in the city is not through over-hauling the council, or pedestrianising the main streets, it’s by making sure Alan Pardew’s men...

Newcastle United’s on loan striker Loic Remy turned some heads during Arsenal’s victory over West Brom as Sky’s camera’s picked the France international – currently on loan from Championship Play-Off hopefuls Qpr – out from the crowd at the Emirates. Naturally, his appearance in North London immediately fuelled speculation of an impending move by Arsene Wenger, who saw Olivier Giroud fire his side’s only goal in the win against Pepe Mel’s Baggies, following the revelation that he is set to leave Qpr this summer.
The Daily Mail reaffirm the fact that Remy does not favour a move back to Tyneside, where Alan Pardew has had to weather a storm of discontent following a dismal run of form in the second half of the season, and his appearance seemingly confirmed for some that the player was already looking to tie up his next move.

The departure of Jonas Gutierrez to Norwich City signals the end of the Argentinian’s long spell at St. James Park, where he became an undoubted fan favourite.
Gutierrez arrived at Newcastle back in 2008 from Mallorca and has since made over 170 league appearances for the Magpies. His scoring record wasn’t the best but his goals were always ones to remember and his overall contribution on the field of play was fantastic.
At the weekend he took to Twitter to announce that he would be leaving the club and joined Norwich on-loan some days later, once again linking up with manager Chris Hughton- who he achieved promotion to the Premier League with while they were both at Newcastle.
Jonas had fallen out of the pecking order at Newcastle, making just two appearances this season. He said:

After finally getting back down to club football last weekend, this weekend sees a newly promoted Hull City make the trip north to Newcastle ahead of Saturday’s 3 pm Kick off at St James Park. I will be taking a look at any news ahead of the game and trying to work out likely starting line-ups and formations.
Hull City
As a newly promoted team, Hull City must have been hoping for an easier start than an away draw to Chelsea. Inevitably this game ended in defeat for the Tigers but it was a strong showing nonetheless. Some very astute signings throughout the transfer window and also a selling off of some of the squad players has left Steve Bruce with a competitive squad.
Most pundits suggest Hull City are in for a classic long and hard season as a newly promoted team. I think they have...

There is a lot of discussion going on about how important this game is for both teams. Both sets of fans are looking at it as a benchmark to gain a better understanding of where their club stands. For Villa it is a chance to shake off the recent defeats and build the foundations for a spell of form. For Newcastle it is an opportunity to show what they can offer in an attacking sense. With both teams having almost no injury concerns it is an opportunity for both managers to pick their favoured starting eleven’s. As with all matches both teams rely on four different segments (Goalkeeper, Defence, Midfield & Strikers). So what I am going to look at is where this game is likely to be won or lost.

The reason why Arsenal’s potential deal for Newcastle’s French midfielder died has apparently been confirmed by former BBC Sport correspondent James Pearce.
Pearce left the BBC recently to concentrate on a freelance career, but he is still close to the game, and according to his source, the deal died when Mike Ashley allowed the Franch midfielder to listen in on a call between the two parties during negotiations for the player.
During that call, not only was Cabaye’s valuation confirmed as £25million – a lot more than the £10million that the Gunners reportedly bid for Cabaye – but even more importantly, the Arsenal side of the conversation rather disparagingly referred to the French national player as a reserve…
Having had his head turned by Arsenal’s interest – in the words of manager Alan Pardew at least, Cabaye was apparently put off the move when he heard that.

A horribly dull first leg has set up a perfectly balanced second leg. Newcastle returned from Moscow with a 0-0 draw to give them hope of reaching the last 8. Newcastle now know any form of win will send them through but have to be cautious as an Anzhi away goal could spell curtains.
Newcastle’s home Europa League form has been impressive this year with The Magpies unbeaten (3 wins, 2 draws) but they haven’t won since their second group match. Anzhi have struggled on the road in the competition with three wins, two draws and two defeats but haven’t won away since the qualifying rounds.
This all leaves us with a very interesting, hard to call tie. With only a week separating the two legs there isn’t much time for rest and both teams also played...

After what feels like an eternity of underwhelming transfer windows, Newcastle’s much needed activity in the market appears to be kick-starting, and not a day too soon. Having seen their side slump to defeat against teams they brushed aside a lot easier last season, and having suffered the embarrassment of Loic Remy infamously and very publically turning them down for bottom club Qpr and an inflated pay-package, the weekend saw Newcastle fans baying for blood at St. James Park.
The brunt of the criticism fell to Alan Pardew, whose substitutions baffled the fans (though he did subsequently explain them away as necessary solutions to injuries), but no small amount of venom was reserved for owner Mike Ashley, who has this season been branded a failure for the same transfer policy that saw his backroom team exhalted last season. The owner sits precariously on a fence, on one side derision and open hatred,...

Arsenal have a clean bill of health with no fresh injuries to report, nor suspensions. They are still without Andre Santos, Abou Diaby and Lukasz Fabianski.
The same cannot be said for the visitors; defender Mike Williamson is suspended until January 2nd after picking up a booking against Manchester United on Boxing Day, whilst midfielders Hartem Ben Arfa, (hamstring) Yohan Cabaye, (groin) Vurnon Anita (ankle) and Jonas Gutierrez (knee) are all out.
Long-term absentees Ryan Taylor, Haris Vuckic, Yohan Cabaye, and Steven Taylor all remain sidelined, along with Dan Gosling, but Ivorian Cheick Tiote returns after serving a one game ban.

Demba Ba has been linked with a move away from Newcastle for as long as a Transfer Window has been ever since his move to St James Park last year, but this time there’s a twist. Last year a buy out clause of £7.5million was inserted into his contract which means any club offering that amount in January has the right to speak to the former West Ham forward.
Added to that is Demba Ba’s reticence to sign a new deal with Newcastle, which has created interest from the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham. To further stoke the fire, the 27 year old, when speaking about a potential move to Arsenal, commented:
“Arsenal are one of those teams who makes you dream.”

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has revealed that the struggling Magpies have called off their Christmas party out of respect to the fans after a woeful run of results.
Newcastle’s 3-1 loss to champions Manchester City on Saturday was the club’s sixth defeat in seven Premier League games and the fourth time they’ve lost at former fortress St. James Park this season, one more than The Magpies lost at home during the last campaign. They are stuck in 15th place in the league, just two points above the drop zone at almost the half-way point of the season.
Speaking to The Evening Chronicle, a dejected Pardew talked about the pressure of delivering better results for the fans and that their position in the league was nothing to celebrate about;
“It’s out of respect to our fans, and what we’ve served them this year.” “There’s no party for us,...

Is Arsene Wenger about to take advantage of the impressive Senegalese midfielder’s contract clause to bring him to the Emirates in January?
According to a report from the MailOnline, Arsenal are set to rival Newcastle United for the January acquisition of West Ham’s highly-rated Senegalese midfielder Mohamed Diame, though the report suggests that the Magpies have emerged as favourites to sign the former Wigan man.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who put in a sterling performance against the Magpies in West Ham’s 0-1 victory at St James Park a few weeks ago has a release clause of £3.5million in his contract, and could be on his way out of the London club if one of his rumoured suitors choose to activate the clause.

Is Manchester United’s flying Portuguese winger Nani about to head to Italy?
According to a report on TalkSport, Manchester United’s Portuguese winger Nani is the subject of increased interest from AC Milan, who are stepping up their efforts to sign him, according to reports in Italy.
The Portuguese international midfielder has been linked with a move away from the club recently, with strong rumours of a £25m late summer move to big spending Zenit St Petersburg suggested by the Daily Mail. According to that same report Nani has grown increasingly disillusioned with life at Old Trafford after failing to agree a new contract in the summer, despite expectations, and being pushed out of the first-team.

Now that the Premier League season is seven games old, and the International break has afforded some opportunity for evaluation, it is time to reflect on the first chapter of this year’s competition, and see exactly which areas teams need to strengthen in, either to take advantage of their strong start (as in the case of Everton), to pinpoint exactly where the summer’s transfer activity was lacking (as in the case of Newcastle United), or to kick on after a relatively poor start (as in the case of Liverpool).
For Manchester United the start to the season has been a mixed bag of relatively poor form, but reasonably good results, and it is somewhat telling that United didn’t hit their strides until last week’s match against Newcastle at St James Park, according to their manager. As confirmed on Sky Sports News, the deal which has just seen digital pay-day lenders Wonga named as the new lead commercial partner for Newcastle United will see the name of the Magpies’ stadium return to St James Park, and not a Wonga rebrand as had been widely tipped (and criticised).
The deal, which Newcastle have just announced on their official website, will include the sponsorship of the club’s shirts, as well as stadium sponsorship, but Wonga have made the decision to officially revert to the original, iconic name of the stadium, and in doing so have pulled off one of the best marketing decisions they could ever hoped for with the announcement of the sponsorship deal already attracting criticism for the nature of the company.

Despite beating Bordeaux 3-0 at St James Park on Thursday, Newcastle United were defeated 0-3 at home to Manchester United in front of a packed-in 52,000 plus crowd, thanks to two headed goals from defenders, and a fortunate cross-shot from Cleverley that missed his intended target but sailed into the net over Steve Harper’s head.
The game was a scrappy affair at times, with 8 yellow cards given by Howard Webb, who was roundly booed by the home crowd for missing a couple of decisions early on, and for his tendency to produce cards too easily – especially in terms of his booking of Cheick Tiote which particularly angered the crowd. But both sides played some reasonable football in periods, with the Reds more clinical and more clever on the ball.

Super Sunday as it is known on Sky Sports features the heavyweight clash between the Toon Army and the Red Devils, and it is a mouthwatering clash.
Newcastle have not been in the greatest form in the early stages of the season, but the 3-0 thumping of Bordeaux in the Europa League during the week will have done them the world of good in the build up to this clash. 10th place Newcastle currently have an unbeaten home record this season, including two victories against Norwich and Tottenham. In the past 10 meetings between the sides Newcastle have only recorded one victory, but the fact that this came in their last encounter with last season’s runner’s up will give them a boost ahead of the clash.

When Newcastle United line up on Sunday afternoon to face Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, they do so with the weight of history imbalanced firmly in the other direction, with last year’s Premier League runners-up enjoying the best of the matches between the two for the majority of the Premier league era. In their latest meeting, at Old Trafford a few short weeks ago, Manchester United were once more victorious, snatching a 2-1 victory, despite a spirited Newcastle display to set up a League Cup fourth round match with Chelsea, but the Toon Army needn’t be disheartened by the lessons of the past completely.

Some comically bad news for Newcastle United fans on the eve of the club’s Premier League match against Manchester United at home, as according to the Daily Telegraph, the club are poised to sign a sponsorship deal with money lending firm Wonga that will cover both the shirt and stadium, which will reportedly be renamed.
Current shirt sponsors Virgin Money will not be associated with the club beyond the end of the season, and the Telegraph confirm that the owner Mike Ashley has been looking to sign a joint shirt and stadium sponsor for next year and beyond. The deal, which would see Newcastle net £8m a year, running from the start of the 2013 season for an initial three years.

Liverpool have spent over £150 million since John Henry arrived at Anfield. Luis Suarez had been linked with the Reds so his transfer from Ajax was anticipated. What nobody expected was the £50 million sale of Fernando Torres and the purchase of Andy Carroll.
At the time Carroll had been in sparkling form. Newcastle were in the midst of their first season back in the Premier League and during their reshuffle phase the 23-year-old became a hero at St James Park. The Newcastle native scored 11 goals before Deadline Day. Watching Sky Sports News as Carroll travelled by helicopter to sign at Anfield was exciting; the transfer seemed to come from nowhere.
Despite the hype surrounding the move there was one question on everybody’s lips: £35 million? The most expensive British player of-all-time; the pressure was always going to weigh heavily on a player who’d only been in the Premier League for six months.

The new Premier League season is finally upon us. Despite an entertaining summer of football with the Euro’s and the Olympics it’s safe to say we’re missed the bread and butter of the league with a passion. New Tottenham manager Andre Villas Boas take his Spurs side to St James Park (sorry, Sports Direct Arena) to kick off their season and will be hoping to gather some early momentum to continue their recent assault on the top four. Newcastle have high hopes of their own this year after a stunning season last time out saw them finish an unlucky 5th and picking up points from one of their near rivals on the opening day of the new campaign would be a big boost.

If Sir Alex Ferguson wants to compete once more this season with city rivals Manchester City, he needs to take charge of further rebuilding at Old Trafford after the signings of attacking midfield pair Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell, especially with Roberto Mancini said to be closing in on his own summer targets.
One of the most needed areas of development for Sir Alex is in midfield, whose lack of depth lead to the retirement u-turn of Paul Scholes, and which may well still be compounded by the question mark that still hangs over the fitness of Darren Fletcher. Even more specifically, United need defensive steel to balance their attacking options, and Sir Alex will surely have made a holding player, or a playmaker capable of playing deeper as a priority this summer.
Here we look at seven possible options for Sir Alex…

As the media have been suggesting for some time, Newcastle United have become the latest club to show an interest in signing their former striker Andy Carroll from Liverpool. The deal would see Carroll sensationally return to St James Park on a season-long loan with a view to that deal becoming permanent at the end of the season.
The media has whipped up a storm surrounding Carroll in the past week or since since new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers failed to give assurances over the former Toon man’s future at Anfield, and seemingly hinted that the club would listen to offers for the England striker. With former Chelsea and Roma striker Fabio Borini joining the Merseyside club this week for £11m, Rodgers may now be more willing to see the big frontman leave , though he is said to be only interested in a sale, rather than a loan.

With the next Newcastle United home strip rumoured to be released on August 1st (or if not, then a little closer to the first home match), now’s as good a time as any to look back at one of the most persistent rumours of the summer – that relating to a supposed early leak of the new black and white strip. The shirt in question first appeared some time ago, when the sponsor was still Northern Rock (hence the first image above), and since then a fresh image of the same shirt has appeared, greeted with as much belief from certain quarters as it was sneered at from others.
Personally I was in the latter group, refusing to accept that a shirt that was leaked the best part of a year before its unveiling could ever possibly be real, and annoyed that so many people had apparently fallen for it.

According to Talksport radio and Skysports, Alan Pardew is set to unveil a significant signing today, with Lille’s French international right-back Mathieu Debuchy said to be on the verge of joining the North East club.
Newcastle had seen an initial £4m offer rejected, but quickly returned to the negotiating table with a superior offer – closer to the £6m or so Lille were said to want before Euro 2012 – which was still under consideration at the start of this week. Andy Carroll’s fall from grace has been punctuated this week by the news he may join West Ham United on loan, just one full season after a club record £35 million move from St James Park. The transfer made him the most expensive English player in football history. But how did Andy Carroll go from Geordie Hero to Liverpool zero so quickly?
Carroll joined Liverpool on the final day of the transfer window in January 2011. Despite having previously scored 33 times in 91 appearances for Newcastle, where he enjoyed cult status at his hometown club, he never lived up to that price tag at Anfield.
In fact, he managed a miserable return of 11 strikes in 56 appearances over two seasons and was outscored last season by Chelsea rookie Daniel Sturridge, who ironically might replace him this season.

In the wake of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers’ apparent refusal to confirm that striker Andy Carroll has a future at Anfield, the media yesterday whipped themselves up into a frenzy with speculation linking him to clubs as diverse as AC Milan and West Ham United. But one question that really needs to be posed at this stage concerns the possibility of Carroll returning to the club at which he made his name before convincing Liverpool to part with £35m for his services last January.

Newcastle United’s 2011/12 season was one of hugely exceeded expectations, tactical nous and some incredibly well considered signings, and with this summer already bringing rumours and news of several new signings, what was a relatively thin squad last year should be bolstered by some new arrivals ahead of the home game against Tottenham in August.
But if Newcastle manager Alan Pardew wants to build on last year’s successes and make a concentrated effort to overcome the next step and qualifying for the Champions League, he will need to sort out some of the lesser players in the squad, and make way for more new faces. The days of bloated squads sitting on contracts and not offering anything to the first team are gone at St James Park, thanks to the frugal business model of owner Mike Ashley, and there will be more outgoing deals than those which have already seen Peter Lovenkrands,...

If the Spurs directors decide that current French manager and former Manchester United centre-half Laurent Blanc is indeed the man they need to sort the club out after Harry Redknapp’s departure, then they can potentially count on the manager’s wealth of knowledge relating to the current crop of French players.
The French league has recently proved a rich mine for affordable talent, thanks predominantly to the willingness of Newcastle United Chief Scout Graham Carr to look for the opportunities to bring talented players across the Channel. The success of both Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa at St James Park this year has turned more heads than Carr’s towards French squads, and the relative in-expense of those players in comparison to established English players, and their quick integration into the Premier League makes them even more attractive.

Premier League sponsors Barclays Bank have just announced that Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has won the 2011/12 Manager of the Season award having guided the Magpies into at least fifth place in the league, and guaranteeing a return to Europe for the first time.
Barclays announced the award on their Facebook page this afternoon:
We’re delighted to announce that Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has been named Barclays Manager of the Season after a fantastic campaign with the Magpies.
Pardew took over at Newcastle in December 2010 after the dismissal of predecessor Chris Hughton – a move which was not universally popular among Newcastle fans at the time, with his first game in charge bringing an impressive victory at St James Park against Liverpool. By the end of that first season back in the Premier League, Newcastle finished in 12th after letting a final day 3-0 lead slip at home against West Brom,...

With Arsenal dropping points yesterday, failing to take the points gap between third, fourth and fifth to a comfortable 4 points, both Newcastle and Tottenham will be fired up to take maximum points from their own games this weekend. The North Londoners have now lost control of their own destiny, and must hope that neither Newcastle nor their own closest city rivals can take advantage and move up into third and the lucrative promise of automatic Champions League qualification.
It is undoubtedly the North Easterners who have the more difficult prospect, welcoming the champions elect to St James Park for what looks like it might be a stellar affair. The atmosphere, at least, is bound to be electric, and Sky have made the right decision to share the fixture with their customers.
For the two clubs involved tomorrow at St James Park at 1.30pm, the fixture might well be the biggest of the season.

Tomorrow sees Newcastle United and table toppers Manchester City lock horns in a game which may have far-reaching consequences for the rest of the league. It is already being called the Game of the Season, because it may well decide who wins the title, and who qualifies for next season’s Champions League competition, and you simply cannot underestimate how much a result would mean to either team.
Will Newcastle take any confidence in the fact that in the five same fixtures which have brought defeat for Man City they have picked up 9 points of the 12 available (Everton away will round out the season for the Toon)? Will Man City, with probably the finest goalkeeper in the league (according to the Pfa anyway), be able to stop the potent attacking threat of Senegalese hitman Papiss Cisse and his two partners in crime Demba Ba and Hatem Ben Arfa?
Let’s hope so.

If the past few years has taught us only one thing, it is this: Premier League football is now driven by the currency of immediate success. Pre-season directorial statements of intent and objectives are far more set in stone than in earlier years that saw Sir Alex Ferguson allowed to ride out an unsuccessful period before striking it rich. In short, if you fail to meet expectations at any stage in your managerial career, the axe will now usually fall, cutting the average tenure of a manager drastically, and making previously untouchable names like Arsene Wenger far less invincible. Past successes count for nothing.
The fact of the matter is: Kenny Dalglish has never been quite the infallible genius that certain elements of the footballing world have previously proclaimed him. Especially not since leaving Newcastle United under a dark cloud having effectively dismantled Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers, and turning the...
