The producer of Willie Nelson’s upcoming Last Leaf on the Tree album — Nelson’s son, Micah — has said that the through line for the LP is “facing death with grace.” On the surface, Nelson’s latest single, a cover of the Flaming Lips’ existentialist psychedelic rocker “Do You Realize??,” fits that rubric only with the line, “Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?” but otherwise is a beautiful celebration of life, especially when Nelson sings it.

Willie Nelson has released a new cover of The Flaming Lips’ fan favorite “Do You Realize??” It will appear on his upcoming album, Last Leaf on the Tree. Stream it below.
Nelson’s interpretation of “Do You Realize??” stays more grounded than the original, layering a piano and harmonica with acoustic guitar and stark vocals. Knowing that his son, Micah Nelson, produced the project with the theme of “facing death with grace” adds deeper meaning to lyrics like, “Instead of saying all of your goodbyes, let them know/ You realize that life goes fast.”

Jd Souther, a Songwriters Hall of Famer whose collaborations with The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor helped define the country-tinged Laurel Canyon/Southern California rock sound of the 1970s, has died. He was 78.
His reps said Souther died peacefully at his home in Sandia Park, Nm, but did not provide a cause or date of death.
Born John David Souther on November 2, 1945, in Detroit — he went by Jd, sans periods, throughout nearly all of his professional career — Souther was raised in Amarillo, Texas. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1960s, where he soon, and fortuitously, formed a band called Longbranch Pennywhistle with musician-songwriter Glenn Frey, a fellow Detroit native. The two would continue their songwriting collaboration even after Frey went on to cofound The Eagles, one of the most successful rock bands in history.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the MTV Video Music Awards. The inaugural ceremony, held at Radio City Music Hall and hosted by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler in 1984, saw the Cars taking home video of the year their groundbreaking clip for “You Might Think.”
Since then, the VMAs have doled out 39 more trophies for their top prize, with only a small handful of acts joining the club of repeat winners. Taylor Swift has racked up four wins while Eminem, Rihanna, and Beyoncé have notched two a piece (both Swift and Eminem have a shot at adding to their totals again this year).
Despite MTV handing over the choice to viewers in 2006, the quality of the winners in the category has remained surprisingly consistent, with only a few total duds or headscratchers. To celebrate the VMAs’ ruby anniversary, we ranked all 40 video of the year winners from worst to best.

Until now, anyone who wanted to hear live recordings of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young at their peak had to settle for the double album 4 Way Street. That record, culled from their 1970 shows, had its charged moments, including one of the earliest live versions of Neil Young’s “Ohio,” the Stephen Stills and Young tradeoffs on “Southern Man” and “Carry On,” and the late David Crosby’s version of “Triad,” his ménage à trois manifesto. But Stills in particular was never a fan of the album, calling it “atrocious” in a 1974 interview with Cameron Crowe.

But now, D’Angelo is deep into recording his next album, according to his friend and longtime collaborator Raphael Saadiq.

The third volume of Neil Young’s ongoing Archives box set series chronicles 1976 to 1987. In that time frame, most artists might release three or four records, one possibly being a Greatest Hits comp. But not Young. After all, this is the guy who wrote “Cinnamon Girl,” “Cowgirl in the Sand,” and “Down by the River” all in one evening (with a deliriously high fever, no less). Between 1976 to 1987, Young churned out 10 solo albums — and left a lot on the cutting room floor. “I did a lot of recording during that...

He plays guitar in the great North Carolina band Wednesday, and in 2022, he put out the fantastic breakthrough solo set Boat Songs, piling offhanded, grimy noise on wry, laconic bangers and moaners like “Hangover Game” and “Tastes Just Like It Costs.” This year Lenderman lent sweet playing and vocals to Waxahatchee’s excellent Tiger’s Blood.

White, known for his work with The White Stripes, took to Instagram on Thursday to voice his anger over the unauthorized use of the song “Seven Nation Army” in a campaign video. The musician didn’t mince words, calling the Trump team “fascists” and threatening legal action.

Over the past nine or so years the same strange and uncomfortable moment has been experienced by some of our top recording artists. Presumably, this is felt and marks an experience reserved just for them because of their talents, and it seems that it would hit as a combination of feelings: sheer dread and stark indignance or the sadness that comes with profound loss mixed with the malice that rides with betrayal or a theft. This is the moment when a handful of the most talented musicians of the past 50-plus years learned that Donald Trump, or his campaign team, has plucked one of their songs — in most cases, one of the musician’s finest hours — and used it, without permission, to propel his presidential campaign.

This is a call from Donald Trump to Foo Fighters.
A spokesman for the ex-potus and current GOP presidential nominee hit back at the multiplatinum band today after Dave Grohl and company complained about their hit “My Hero” being played at a weekend rally without the band’s consent.

Foo Fighters quickly denounced the use of their song. When a Twitter account tagged the band and asked if they had “let Trump to use ‘My Hero’ to welcome Rfk Jr. on stage,” the band responded bluntly: “No.” A representative for Foo Fighters offered a similar message when reached for comment from Consequence: “Foo Fighters were not asked permission, and if they were they would not have granted it.

Neil Young has announced four of his classic albums are receiving vinyl reissues. Freedom, Ragged Glory – Smell the Horse, Weld, and Arc will all be back in print on October 4th.
Notably, 1989’s Freedom includes “Rockin’ in the Free World,” which was played with Young’s permission while vice presidential nominee Tim Walz took the stage at DNC 2024 earlier this week. Ragged Glory was released the following year and has been expanded with four rare tracks for this reissue.
In 1991, Young put out Weld as a live album containing recordings of performances from his tour in support of Ragged Glory. Finally, Arc is a companion album to Weld featuring feedback, improvisation, guitar solos, and vocal fragments recorded during live shows.
These albums were first remastered for vinyl when they were collected together for Young’s Official Release Series Volume 5 box set (available for purchase here) last summer.

Despite the track’s litigious history on the campaign trail, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins reported that Walz sought Young’s approval to use “Rockin’ in the Free World” — one of the Minnesota governor’s favorite songs — and that the rocker himself personally authorized its usage.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz took the stage at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, where he officially accepted the vice presidential nomination in front of a raucous audience in Chicago’s United Center.
“It is the honor of my life to accept your nomination as vice president of the United States,” Walz declared to deafening cheers within the arena. Walz spoke in front of a sea of “Coach Walz” signs, and used several football metaphors throughout his speech, which came shortly after a member of the high school team he coached spoke at the convention,...

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz accepted the Democratic nomination for vice president on Wednesday night by sharing the deeply personal story of his journey into politics, in a speech heavy in football references and his Midwestern roots.
“I was a fortysomething high school teacher with little kids, zero political experience and no money running in a deep red district. But you know what? Never underestimate a public school teacher,” he told the crowd at Chicago’s United Center to cap the third night of the Democratic National Convention.
Walz was a virtual unknown on the national stage before Kamala Harris selected him as her running mate earlier this month, playing up his former career as a high school teacher and coach of a football team that won the state championship.

At the 2024 Democratic National Convention, vice presidential nominee Tim Walz took the stage to Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.”
According to CNN, Walz personally sought Young’s permission to use the song and received the musician’s approval.
The song is an apt choice, as it had been previously used by Donald Trump during his initial presidential announcement way back in 2015. However, Trump did not have Young’s permission to use the song then, and despite Young’s repeated cease-and-desist threats, the song continued to be played on the campaign trail in the years that followed. In 2020, Young finally filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Trump.
Originally released on Young’s 1989 album Freedom, “Rockin’ in the Free World” is a protest anthem inspired by Reagan-era policies and disillusionment with the American dream. Much like Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.,” it is often...

The announcement of Willie Nelson’s 76th studio album, Last Leaf on the Tree, comes with good news and better news. The good news is that the lead single is Nelson’s cover of Tom Waits’ “Last Leaf,” a track that Waits cut with Keith Richards for 2011’s Bad as Me. The better news is that Nelson sings it à la Nelson and doesn’t attempt a gravel-throated Waits impression. Instead, Nelson’s rendition features impressionistic guitar ear candy, a little accordion, and drums that sigh along with Nelson as...

Willie Nelson has confirmed the release of Last Leaf on the Tree, which will serve as his 153rd album. The new album will arrive on November 1st.
Nelson, now 91, shared his last studio album The Border back in May. For Last Leaf on the Tree, Nelson’s son Micah curated a list of songs for Willie to cover, including The Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize??,” Beck’s “Lost Cause,” and Tom Waits’ “Last Leaf,” which serves as the album’s title track. There are also covers of songs by Warren Zevon, Nina Simone, Keith Richards, Sunny War, and more, plus a few originals.

“Last Leaf” originally appeared on Tom Waits’ 2011 album Bad as Me, and Nelson’s cover is just as poignant. Across blooming strings and a lonesome accordion, Nelson reflects on aging and a life of experiences with tenderness and patience. Take a listen to “Last Leaf” below.

Right up until his death in 2022, Bob Neuwirth was known to cognoscenti as a songwriter (“Mercedes Benz,” famously recorded by Janis Joplin), painter, recording artist, and onetime member of Bob Dylan’s inner hipster circle. The last thing he was known for was being famous, which his longtime partner, music executive Paula Batson, says was intentional. “He was very self-effacing in a way,” she says. “He didn’t believe in blowing your own horn. He loved promoting other people and helping them, but he wasn’t good at self-promotion.”

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter is much more than a country album — it’s actually a tour through the Black roots of American music that manages to be both thematically rich and stuffed with indelible pop songs, in multiple genres. Kendrick Lamar’s virtuosic “Not Like Us,” meanwhile, completely transcends its status as a killing blow in the Lamar-Drake battle, packing in an astonishing amount of lyrical and musical density — and it’s somehow also the year’s most entertaining, endlessly replayable track.

On Friday, Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Bozeman, Montana featured a video of Dion performing the theme song for the film.
“And really, That song?” a statement shared on Dion’s social media reads.

Devo recently stopped by NPR to play a Tiny Desk Concert featuring lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh at his whimsical best while they ran through deep cuts. Watch a replay of the performance below.
During the 17-minute set, Mothersbaugh cycled through several hats he pulled from NPR’s props closet and also broke out a megaphone to accentuate his vocals. Devo began with their first performance of “It Takes a Worried Man” in 40 years. The track was recorded for the little-seen 1982 Neil Young-directed comedy Human Highway, which also starred Devo as “Nuclear Garbagepersons.”
“It Takes a Worried Man” remains timely more than four decades later, with lyrics like, “I don’t know what’s going on in the world these days/ Seems like everybody’s just got everything turned around/ People don’t seem to care about their fellow Americans.”

Few filmmakers can claim to have helped shape an entire era of cinema, but the boom in 1990s indie cinema is impossible to imagine without producer Stacey Sher.
“If you say, U.S. independent cinema of the ’90s, whatever film touched your feelings, your emotions and your memory, most probably, it has Stacey involved in it,” says Locarno film festival artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, on the reason Locarno is honoring Sher with its 2024 Premio Raimondo Rezzonico, or best independent producer, award.
After a six-year mentorship under legendary producers Deborah Hill and Linda Obst, making such films as Chris Columbus’ debut Adventures in Babysitting and Terry Gilliam’s The Fisher King, Sher joined the Danny DeVito and Michael Shamberg’s newly-founded indie shingle Jersey Films, soon becoming a partner. At Jersey, she was instrumental in championing a new generation of directors — Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Andrew Niccol, Ben Stiller — whose films would define a decade.

On the evening of Feb. 28, 1984, Prince was at home, watching Michael Jackson become the first artist to win eight Grammys in a single night, including Album of the Year for Thriller. When the broadcast was over, Prince turned to Bobby Z, his longtime friend and drummer for the Revolution, and told him, “Next year, that’s gonna be us.”

A lot of the soft-rock from the 1970s isn’t generally considered classic rock, but when those songs are good they’re really good. For example, Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” is indisputably one of the best songs ever recorded. Young’s producer revealed what he thought of the track when he first heard it.
The producer of Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’ made a prediction about it
Elliot Mazer produced Harvest, one of Young’s most important records. During a 2011 interview with AnalogPlanet, Mazer revealed what he thought of “Heart of Gold.” “I knew ‘Heart of Gold’ was a hit when Neil played it,” he said. “He wrote it on piano and performed it on some solo shows. His songs are generally an overpowering feeling.”
Mazer discussed working alongside other musicians while Young crafted “Heart of Gold.” “Kenny, Drummond, Ben, Teddy and I are in the control room,...

Katy Perry‘s Teenage Dream became the first album by a woman to have five No. 1 songs. One of those tracks is among the best pop songs ever recorded. Another is painfully overrated.
5. ‘Firework’
Blasphemy, I know. To many, “Firework” is one of the best self-empowerment anthems of all time, a perfect pick-me-up to combat sadness and anxiety. As someone who finds self-empowerment anthems almost inherently disingenuous, I never liked “Firework” much. However, I can recognize that it combines baroque strings and dance-pop synthesizers expertly.
After “Firework” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks, Perry wrote many other songs in this vein. Her other uplifting tracks — “Part of Me,” “Roar,” and “Woman’s World” — got worse and worse. Se should have written another “Teenage Dream” instead of several more “Firework” clones.

There have been many one-of-a-kind historic events over the last two weeks or so, but arguably — arguably! — the most significant is the release of Katy Perry’s “Woman’s World,” her hilariously catastrophic attempt at a comeback single. Thanks to its brain-dead lyrics (“sexy, confident/ so intelligent”), AI-like chorus, and Perry’s startlingly tone-deaf choice to record a “feminist” song with the likes of Dr. Luke, the song prompted near-universal mockery, and instantly flopped.
“Woman’s World” raises many difficult-to-answer questions. Perry has said its video is meant to be satirical — but...
