What if Superman had turned out to be evil? That was the idea explored by director David Yarovesky’s super-powered horror film Brightburn, which was released back in 2019. Even though the movie made under $33 million at the global box office, the budget was low enough (somewhere in the range of 6 to 12 million) that producer James Gunn said they were talking about a sequel just a couple months after the film reached screens. Then we went a long time with no mentions of Brightburn 2 – until production company The H Collective, which was also behind Brightburn, confirmed that a sequel was in development last September. Things got confusing last month when Gunn took to Threads to say there are “no plans at all” for a Brightburn 2 right now… but Gunn has cleared up some of the confusion by revealing that a sequel is unlikely due to a complicated rights situation.

Brightburn, the 2019 superhero horror film produced by James Gunn, is getting a sequel. The film, which put a dark twist on Superman’s origin story, followed a young boy named Brandon who crash-landed on Earth from another planet and discovered he had superpowers. However, instead of using them for good, he became a violent and murderous supervillain.
The film was a modest success at the box office, earning $32 million on a small budget, and received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. However, it also sparked interest in the potential of a cinematic universe of evil superheroes, as the post-credits scene hinted at the existence of other super-powered beings who were terrorizing the world, such as evil versions of Aquaman and Wonder Woman.

It’s now been four years since the release of David Yarovesky’s Brightburn, a horror take on Young Superman that was notably produced by James Gunn. The film told the origin story of super-villain Brandon Breyer, and it pulled in over $33 million worldwide on a $6 million production budget. That sounds like just about enough to warrant a sequel, eh?
Deadline reports today, “The H Collective is launching H3 Entertainment, a company it says will look to integrate the Metaverse, Web3 and AI into a slate of films.”
“The company tells us it intends to incorporate new technology into the production process of projects it has in development, including a sequel to horror movie Brightburn (the IP is co-owned by H Collective and fellow producer James Gunn),” the site’s report continues.

Whether you caught sight of him in "Devotion" or "Top Gun: Maverick," Glen Powell was last seen flying high as a charming Navy pilot diving headfirst into a dangerous situation. Clearly, a big fan of fighting for his life while trapped in metal machines, Powell has already booked his next big role in a thriller called "Locked," where he stars as a criminal whose car burglary goes terribly wrong.
Per Deadline, "Locked" is "an intense, character-driven thriller about a thief who breaks into a luxury SUV, only to realize that he's stumbled into a complex and deadly trap set by a mysterious figure." And who will Powell star opposite as his thief desperately tries to escape? None other than two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins. While the details of Hopkins' character are a little more mysterious, fingers crossed he plays the sinister figure who set the deadly trap.

Hollywood legend Anthony Hopkins is teaming with Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell for Locked, a remake of the Argentinian action thriller 4X4. David Yarovesky directs from a script by Michael Arlen Ross (Oracle), with the original written and directed by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat. The project hails from Zq Entertainment and Raimi Productions.
According to the synopsis for Cohn’s 2019 thriller, 4X4 revolves around a thug who breaks into a specialized car with a unique security system that keeps him trapped inside, with no one being able to hear him crying for help. Cohn’s film starred Peter Lanzani, Ailén Mazioni, and Dady Brieva. I recommend checking out the trailer for 4X4, as it looks intense, brutal, and prone to giving audiences a feeling of claustrophobia.
In Yarovesky’s version, Powell plays the thug originally portrayed by Lanzani.

Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) will also star in Locked, a remake of the Argentinian movie 4X4 that came from writers/directors Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat.

With Elizabeth Banks' third film as director, "Cocaine Bear," coming in February (and her first that is not attached to an existing franchise), she may finally have the right source material to demonstrate her directing prowess. Comedy, horror, and a certain level of absurdism have been recurring themes across all her acting roles and make her uniquely qualified to adapt the true story that inspired the script.
Admittedly, there's fair reason to go into this next movie with tempered expectations. Banks' 2019 film "Charlie's Angels" was ruled as "empty but endearingly fun" by /Film and designated among that year's biggest box office flops by Variety, while "Pitch Perfect 2" — as a faithful continuation of the first — did not allow Banks much opportunity to add a signature touch.

DC Studios dropped one hell of an announcement this week when it was made public that James Gunn was hard at work on a new "Superman" film, specifically a movie centered on a younger version of the character than previously seen in the Dceu. It's an exciting time to be a fan of DC, because after the success of "The Suicide Squad," the refreshing spin-off series, "Peacemaker," and his "Guardians of the Galaxy" work over at Marvel, Gunn has more than proven he's exactly what Warner Bros. needs to usher in the new era of superhero entertainment. Most are familiar with Gunn's pre-Marvel/DC work on horror films like "Tromeo and Juliet," "Slither," "Dawn of the Dead," and the live-action "Scooby-Doo" movies, but Gunn has been making superhero films outside of the two major companies for a very long time.

In 2019, David Yarovesky introduced the world to a unique scenario: What if Superman was evil? Now, the thought of a villainess Superman has been explored in comics numerous times. The caped crusader has also been portrayed as the bad guy in different forms of media as well, most notably in the video game, Injustice 2. However, the idea of Superman being the villain in a live-action film is certainly fresh and intriguing. However, the problem with Brightburn is that the film ends up being a run-of-the-mill slasher flick. As a whole, Brightburn was a solid film outing, but it’s

While there's a lot of excitement among horror fans for recent and upcoming R-rated releases, I highly recommend Nightbooks, which just recently made its premiere on Netflix! Directed by David Yarovesky, starring Winslow Fegley, Lidya Jewett and Krysten Ritter, and based on a book by J.A. White, Nightbooks is a great movie for kids to watch this Halloween season, with enough scares and fun to win over horror fans of any age!

You’ve just watched Nightbooks with your family, and depending on how your kids reacted to this frightening children’s horror movie, you’ve either been left wanting more or are wondering if you’ve traumatized your little ones for good. Indeed, the latest Netflix chiller from director David Yarovesky (Brightburn), based on the children’s book by J.A. White, is genuinely scary in a way that might take you back to your days of watching Are You Afraid of the Dark? or Goosebumps as a kid.
While the movie is ostensibly about two kids stuck in a fairy tale being spun by a cruel witch (played with relish by Krysten Ritter), Nightbooks cuts much deeper than that, delivering some truly bone-chilling set pieces as protagonists Alex (Winslow Fegley) and Yazmin (Lidya Jewett) try to escape their terrifying surroundings (and a very mean cat). I’m not quite sure who Nightbooks is for. As marketed, the latest Netflix original film appears to be a fantasy-driven horror film for kids and tweens. But the movie itself, which deals with themes of child abuse and features some objectively terrifying monsters, may be too dark for that demographic. This can be an issue with book-to-film adaptations. What works for kids in a literary format can sometimes be too scary once brought to life on-screen. That being said, for adults and kids who have a high tolerance for horror, the Sam Raimi-produced Nightbooks is definitely worth a watch. A gorgeously rendered horror world with a character-driven mystery at its heart, director David Yarovesky’s adaptation of J.A. White’s 2018 middle grade story is a truly rewarding spooky season experience that’ll appeal to adults and kids who are willing to delve into its secrets.

Save for a small handful of recent films like “The House with the Clock in Its Walls” or the “Goosebumps” movies — nearly all with Jack Black as comic relief — chillers for children are an uncommon and somewhat dicey proposition. For horror filmmakers even interested in trying, they have to hit an exceedingly narrow target, offering enough scares and intensity to delight intrepid tweens without sending them diving under their parents’ comforters with nightmares. Based on J.A. White’s novel, “Nightbooks” will certainly push its audience to the limit with its unrelenting fusillade of jump scares, black magic and campfire stories, but

Are you ready for another scary YA-like kids story? Netflix’s new film “Nightbooks” places its morbid storytelling directly in the hands of one special boy. His talents are put to the test after encountering a witch with a taste for terrifying tales. This adaptation of J.A. White’s book harkens back to classic ‘80s fantasy and horror like “Labyrinth.” The film features a screenplay from Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis; both Daughtry and Iaconis are well aware of genre content, having worked on 2019’s “The Curse of La Llorona.”

For this week’s home media releases, we have killer superheroes, prehistoric creatures, Frankenstein by way of Hammer, Anjelica Huston as a witch, the final farewell to Rick Grimes, and more on tap. Kino Lorber is keeping busy this Tuesday with several new Blu-rays, including 4D Man, Dinosaurs! and Billy the Kid vs. Dracula, and Scream Factory is releasing the recent indie horror flick I Trapped the Devil and more Hammer genre goodness with Horror of Frankenstein as well. Another film I’m very excited to see hitting Blu is The Witches from the Warner Archive Collection, and William Friedkin’s Cruising is getting the special edition treatment from Arrow Video.
If you missed it in theaters, Brightburn will arrive on various formats this week, and for those of you who want to enjoy Rick Grimes’ final moments from this past season of The Walking Dead, you’ll get your...

What if someone with superpowers akin to Superman decided to use their abilities for evil instead of good? The chilling answer to that question is explored in David Yarovesky's Brightburn (which Heather Wixson wrote "soars as a gory slasher/superhero hybrid" in her 4-star review), and if you missed it in theaters or want to experience it again, you'll be pleased to know that Sony is releasing the film on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on August 20th (following an August 6th digital release), and we've been provided with the cover art and full list of bonus features:

I know a lot of fans have been excited about the prospect of a sequel to James Gunn’s horror film Brightburn. The movie told a Superman-like origin story but with an evil and sinister twist. The powerful alien boy who crashes on Earth turns out to be a little prick hellbent on murdering people instead of helping them.
While I liked the film and thought it was well-made, it didn’t sit well with me. That being said, if the movie would have kept going after it ended I would have liked to watch the story continue. This first film set the stage for something that could be much more interesting, complex, and engaging.
As of right now, there is no sequel for the film in development, but producer James Gunn did confirm with EW that he is talking about it with the creative team, which includes director David Yarovesky...

Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson Dunn, Director David Yarovesky and Producer James Gunn are interviewed by DaniElle DeLaite for their movie Brightburn which moulds the superhero movie with the horror genre. The film was written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn and also stars Abraham Clinkscales, Christian Finlayson, Jennifer Holland and Emmie Hunter.
Jackson Dunn talks about the many different variants of the Brightburn suit he tried on, and then how he felt stepping into the final costume. Elizabeth Banks tells us about the time she walked into the dressing room with dozens of Brightburn masks staring at her.
Related: We loved the film – here’s our glowing review.
James Gunn talks about taking elements of the superhero and horror genres and making something new and exciting. The idea of a superhero that was actually a supervillain is a very simple one, and Gunn talked about deconstructing superhero myths to help bring this idea alive.

Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” remake is on its way to a commendable Memorial Day weekend debut with an estimated $109 million over the four-day period.
The musical fantasy starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud should uncover about $87 million in its first three days from 4,476 North American theaters after taking in $31 million on Friday. Should estimates hold, “Aladdin” will mark the sixth-highest Memorial Day weekend debut of all time, just behind 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” with $110.5 million.
Guy Ritchie directed the remake, with Smith taking on the role of Robin Williams’ Genie and Massoud portraying the titular hero. Naomi Scott stars as Jasmine, along with Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen. Ritchie also co-wrote the script alongside John August, with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich producing.
Also debuting this weekend is Screen Gems’ “Brightburn,” which took in $3 million on Friday and is headed for a $10 million four-day start from 2,607 domestic theaters.

Chicago – The opening to the 1950s “Adventures of Superman” TV series includes the words “strange visitor from another planet.” But because Supes had used his subsequent powers for good, he eventually was found not so strange. What if, however, he had been evil, and used his powers destructively? The new film “Brightburn” speculates on such a phenomenon.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The premise is simple, yet could have been so easy to mess up. The creators – producer James Gunn (“The Avengers” series), director David Yarovesky, with writers Brian and Mark Gunn (James’ brother and cousin) – take care to use the situation as symbolism for adolescent emergence and emphasis an outside force (puberty?) as changing the power dynamic within this “superman.” There is so much to unpack in a tight story, there could be a new cinema wing built just to analyze it. It’s powerfully absorbing as well, never shying away from its thesis,...

Brightburn stars David Denman and Jackson A. Dunn on playing a dad and his son -- who happens to be a superbeing.
What if a powerful being -- the kind we usually refer to as a superhero -- came to Earth and was not interested in protecting humanity but destroying it? The new movie Brightburn, produced by James Gunn and directed by David Yarovesky, asks that provocative question while combining two of the most popular film genres around: horror and superhero origin story.
The film stars Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) and David Denman (The Office) as a young married couple who, while struggling to conceive a child on their own, feel themselves blessed when one lands on their farm inside an alien vessel.

Brutal and bludgeoning, David Yarovesky’s Brightburn is a film designed to knock the breath from your chest and subvert expectations. An alien infant crash-lands to Kansas. A childless couple yearns for a baby. The humans come across the tiny spaceship and raise the alien-who-looks-like-a-human as their own. If you think you’ve heard this story before, that is not the case. The script (written by both Brian and Mark Gunn) is an inventive, if illogical glance at the Superman myth, a ‘what if’ re-telling of a situation we all assume we’d handle correctly.
So do Kyle (David Denman) and Tori Breyer (Elizabeth Banks). The opening shots of infertility books, loving photos, overalls (his) and a Ramones t-shirt (hers) is as much character background as we learn about the Breyers. Following a crash outside and a red light in the distance, the film breezes through the alien baby’s early years,...

When the trailer dropped for Brightburn late in 2018, cinephiles across the nation were abuzz. The fresh new take on superpowers looked as interesting as it was surprising. No one had heard much about the film and most of the details still remained unknown even after the teaser was released.
The fact that Elizabeth Banks and James Gunn were both tied to the project made it even more enticing. Just as director David Yarovesky had planned, fans of the extremely successful superhero genre were left wanting more after watching the trailer. His purposeful attempt to keep audiences in the dark about his latest production in hopes that they would then be captivated when they finally saw his eerie vision of a young alien with otherworldly powers paid off.
Although the film still hasn’t even finished its opening weekend, there’s already talk of a potential sequel or two. If the box office numbers are there,...

Director David Yarovesky’s obsession with horror movies puts a unique spin on Brightburn.
While James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) is the big filmmaking name on the new superhero/horror hybrid Brightburn -- he produced the picture, which was written by his brother Mark and cousin Brian -- the person actually behind the camera on the movie is director David Yarovesky. A longtime friend of Gunn’s, Yarovesky cut his teeth on videos, commercials and short films before making his feature writing and directing debut with the micro-budget horror movie The Hive.
Yarovesky is still working with a relatively modest budget on Brightburn, but that’s part of the movie’s charm: in many ways it’s a bit of a throwback to the sort of mid-level horror sleepers that dominated the late 1970s and 1980s. The movie stars Elizabeth Banks and David Denman as a...

David Yarovesky’s Brightburn earns every puddle of eye juice, mangled corpse, and horrific disfigured gore effect of its *hard* R-rating. Yes, this is the “evil Superman origin” slasher promised. Gruesomely inclined to scare prospective parents off pregnancy timetables; complicated enough to thread adoption drama through rural massacre despicableness. A child discovering limitless power, lied to by society, wrestling temperamental consciousness while befalling the corruption of man. There’s a lot to savor, but the flavors end up somewhat expected despite mature adolescent horrors.
Can you kill what you love or love something that kills? Brightburn isn’t the nightmare to answer such crippling caretaker choices, but hey, here are some wicked genre kills you’ll never scrub away!
Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn) is a Brightburn, Kansas resident with an undefined past. Mother Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and father Kyle (David Denman) found their baby boy when his spacecraft crashed in their backyard.

“Aladdin,” Disney’s live-action remake of the 1992 animated classic, earned $7 million in its Thursday box office previews. It headlines the four-day, Memorial Day weekend on over 4,400 screens.
“Aladdin” comes from director Guy Ritchie and stars Will Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott and Marwan Kenzari. It opens against Sony and Screen Gems’ horror film “Brightburn,” and the raunchy teen comedy “Booksmart” from first-time director Olivia Wilde.
Disney is projecting the family fantasy film to earn between $75-85 million in its opening weekend, with independent trackers saying it could be as low as $65 million. That’s in part because social media buzz for the film has been disappointing following early looks at Will Smith’s Genie and other clips. Critics, however, while split, said that the early negative attention was overblown and that the film is better than the initial marketing gave it credit.
