If the title of this wacky comedy seems a little weird, that’s probably because the comedy troupe Please Don’t Destroy are largely unknown to UK audiences. This is their big screen debut, following a series of comedy sketches that lead to them becoming regular contributors to Saturday Night Live in the US. As such, it’s something of a hit-and-miss affair, but the hits are just about good enough to make it worth your while.

It’s a Not Dead Yet murder mystery! Season 2 Episode 5 of the ABC comedy will see Gina Rodriguez‘s Nell on the hunt for a possible killer after her latest obituary ghost, played by guest star Rob Corddry, warns that his death was no accident. And TV Insider has the exclusive first look at the episode. In the promo above, Coddry’s ghost tells Nell he was “pushed” to his death. “This could land me the front page!” the eager journalist replies. No one’s more thrilled by the murder mystery than boss Lexi (the hilariously camp Lauren Ash), who inserts herself into Nell’s investigation once she catches wind of this possible true-crime scenario. “Girls’ night? A night of girls solving a murder? I’m in,” Lexi excitedly says. Their suspected killer is played by Cedric Yarbrough, whom Corddry’s ghost (an accountant) says was not pleased about being audited.

The comedy team known as Please Don't Destroy from recent seasons of "Saturday Night Live" have made quite a splash on the late night sketch comedy show. Acting as what is basically the newest equivalent of The Lonely Island, the trio comprised of Martin Herlihy, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall delivers hilarious pre-recorded sketches, and they're also part of the writing staff. Now, like many "SNL" cohorts before them, Please Don't Destroy is releasing their first movie, and the first trailer has arrived.
Originally intended for theaters, "Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain" is coming to Peacock in November instead, probably because the title wouldn't fit on most marquees. But in all seriousness, don't let its streaming destination make you think this movie isn't worth your time. This is the kind of comedy that studios aren't making much anymore, and it likely feels like it's just too much...

Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”) made a rare appearance to accept the Legacy Award, Brooke Shields spoke passionately about the reality of co-existing in the world of social media and Kerry Washington (“UnPrisoned”) joined a collective of equally hilarious actresses including Elle Fanning (“The Great”), Janelle James (“Abbott Elementary”) and Gina Rodriguez (“Dead To Me”) to discuss forging vanity for laughs and embracing the “messy” woman.
The all-day discussion also tackled the state of television today amid a writers strike and an ever-changing landscape of streaming. We’ve rounded up the standout moments from Variety’s TV FYC Fest panels and presentations which brought out important — and at times hilarious — conversations about this season of shows.

Back in 2021, "Saturday Night Live" debuted recorded sketches from the comedy group known as Please Don't Destroy. Having carved out a viral comedy presence on social media, the trio of Martin Herlihy, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall have established themselves as the latest successors to The Lonely Island's game-changing SNL Digital Shorts. Frequently, Please Don't Destroy's sketches have been among the best efforts in each new episode of "SNL," such as the one below featuring Taylor Swift. Beyond that, Herlihy, Higgins, and Marshall have also been responsible for writing plenty of other memorable sketches from the past two seasons.
Please Don't Destroy was meant to make their big screen debut this year, having written the script for a feature film produced by longtime comedy filmmakers Judd Apatow and Jimmy Miller. The upcoming film from Please Don’t Destroy — the comedy trio that broke out online before being picked up by Saturday Night Live to produce the show’s digital shorts — will debut on Universal’s sister streamer Peacock on Nov. 17.
The untitled film was initially planned for a theatrical release on Aug. 18, but that date will now be taken over by R-rated dog comedy Strays. (Strays was previously set to open opposite Transformers: Rise of the Beasts on June 9. It will now open the same weekend as DC superhero movie Blue Beetle.) It is unclear why the Please Don’t Destroy project was moved to Peacock.
Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy, who make up Please Don’t Destroy, wrote and star in the film, which, according to the synopsis, “centers on three childhood friends who live and work together, and question where their lives are headed — if anywhere at all.

Universal Pictures has changed its release plans for its as-yet-untitled buddy comedy from comedians Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy — the SNL writing trio collectively known as Please Don’t Destroy. While the film was previously set to hit theaters on August 18th, it will now debut exclusively on Peacock on November 17th.
Produced by Judd Apatow for Apatow Productions and Jimmy Miller for Mosaic, the film centers on three childhood friends who live and work together, and question where their lives are headed — if anywhere at all. Completely ill-equipped and out of their element, they set off to find a lost treasure rumored to be buried in their local mountains. They subsequently discover that finding the treasure is actually the easiest part of the adventure.

(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: "Fired on Mars.")
I've dedicated a lot of time to writing about the various ways the Hollywood machine disrespects the work of those in the animation field, which is to say I'm completely unsurprised that HBO Max released their new series, "Fired on Mars," with little fanfare. This is the same streaming app that quietly removed a massive chunk of its animation library for tax write-offs, and one that's run by a billionaire CEO who thinks a "love of working" will end the current WGA strike, rather than, you know, paying them fairly.

One day, perhaps even in our lifetime, human beings will be living on Mars. When that time comes, not every colonist will be a super scientist or engineer, there would still be a need for cooks, janitors, and… graphic designers? Max has released the first official trailer for Fired on Mars, a workplace comedy series which tells the story of Jeff Cooper, a man who finds himself adrift after taking a one-way trip to the Red Planet only to have his bosses unceremoniously eliminate his role.
Luke Wilson stars as Jeff Cooper in Fired on Mars, leading a cast which includes Leslie David Baker, Cory Loykasek, Stephen Root, and Cedric Yarbrough. The eight-episode series will also feature Pamela Adlon, Thomas Haden Church, Tim Heidecker, Frankie Quinones, Emily Watson, and Sean Wing in guest-starring roles.

Bob Odenkirk could find himself in the rare Emmy air this year. AMC will submit Odenkirk’s new series, “Lucky Hank,” in comedy categories for this year’s Emmy competition, Variety has confirmed.
Of course, AMC is also submitting the final episodes of Odenkirk’s “Better Call Saul” in the drama fields. Should Odenkirk be nominated in both the best drama actor and best comedy actor races, he would become the first performer in history to be nominated in both genres in the same year.
Several performers have been nominated and even won Emmys as both drama and comedy leads — but never at the same time. It’s a possibility: Odenkirk has been nominated five times in the best drama actor category for “Better Call Saul,” and this will be his final opportunity to compete in that race for “Saul”. Hank is going to Hank.
If you didn't learn that from the series premiere of Lucky Hank, you'll know it after Lucky Hank Season 1 Episode 2, premiering Sunday on AMC and AMC+.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive clip from the new episode, and it features Bob Odenkirk delivering another masterclass in acting.
He was excellent on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, but he's playing a very different role in Lucky Hank, showcasing his impressive acting range to perfection.
In the clip, Hank is given the opportunity to speak with Booker Prize winner George Saunders.
While anyone would be ecstatic about speaking with such a prestigious figure, Hank has other ideas.
It doesn't help matters that Hank learns just how much the college is paying for the privilege of having George at the campus.
It's a fun scene that showcases why the show has been such a resounding success with critics.

Some of the best television shows are about whip-smart operators and the political nuances of their professional worlds. So why then is it so challenging to make a satisfying series about academia? It’s not only difficult to think of a television show that has succeeded in lifting the veil of a university, it’s tough to think of shows that have even tried. The most recent swipe at it was Netflix’s “The Chair,” a thin but charming dramedy starring Sandra Oh that ended after a single season. Even as college campuses remain a go-to battleground for American culture wars, the inner lives of the professors caught in the crossfire are usually reserved for novels.
The latest such attempt to animate the tenured life is AMC’s “Lucky Hank,” which is built from just such a novel. It’s an adaptation of “Straight Man,” the Richard Russo novel that...

Less than a year after “Better Call Saul” wrapped its inconceivably excellent six-season run (somehow matching the towering precedent set by “Breaking Bad”), Bob Odenkirk is back on AMC. That’s good for the network, which has steadily built a fan base around the two-time Emmy winner via those back-to-back hits. No matter where he pops up, seeing Odenkirk on TV should never be taken for granted, even if his new series isn’t quite sure what it is yet.
Through only two episodes, it’s hard to tell if “Lucky Hank” could use a bit more of “Saul’s” eagerness to gaze into the darkness, or if it’d be better off dialing up its softer side. The “everything and the kitchen sink” approach taken by co-showrunners Aaron Zelman and Paul Lieberstein leaves enough room to pivot toward what’s working as the season goes on, but also too...

Television is a relatively new indulgence for South by Southwest. What started as a music conference and market for the exchange of pop cultural ideas in 1986 quickly grew into a full-blown film festival by 1994. It wasn’t until 2014, however, that TV fully got its due with the addition of “Episodic” programming to the SXSW Film Festival.
Now, nearly 10 years after television first arrived to the Austin, Texas get-together, the People’s Medium is well and truly having its moment at SXSW 2023. No fewer than 20 TV shows will have their premieres at SXSW this time around, running the gamut from tentpole streaming sci-fi to little-known pilots in search of a forever home
With that in mind, here is everything that SXSW attendees and TV fans in general can look forward to from SXSW 2023’s Episodic output.

Bob Odenkirk is going through a midlife crisis in the AMC series, “Lucky Hank”.
Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Straight Man, by Richard Russo, the “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” alum plays Hank Devereaux Jr., head of the English department at the underfunded Railton College, whose life begins to fall apart. Hank’s unhappiness is rooted in unresolved issues with his father, a mediocre and entitled student body and the fact that his department is more divided than ever. ‘The Killing”s Mireille Enos co-stars as Lily Devereaux, Hank’s wife and vice principal of a local high school, who starts to question the path she’s on and the choices she’s made amid his downward spiral.

Being English department head doesn’t seem to have any special perks on the surface, but in the first official trailer for the AMC series Lucky Hank, Bob Odenkirk proves that it serves as great source material for maximum melodrama.
“The fact that you’re here means you show very little promise,” Professor Hank Devereau (Odenkirk) spits at a student before immediately asking: “Did that sound harsh?” Soon, a headline in the school newspaper reads: “Prof. Devereaux Calls All Railton Students Mediocre.”
The series, set to premiere on March 19, seems...

Bob Odenkirk is the face of angry middle-aged white guy mediocrity in the trailer for “Lucky Hank,” a dark comedy coming to AMC and AMC+ on Sunday, March 19. If it’s going to be anyone, it should be him.
In “Lucky Hank” – formerly known as “Straight Man” – Odenkirk stars as William Henry “Hank” Devereaux, Jr., the chair of the English department at Railton College, an underfunded, underachieving college in small-town Pennsylvania. Hank is an unhappy man who resents his father, his students, and his co-workers, which he manages by checking out from his life. But one day, he’s pushed to his breaking point and snaps at his students during class, which sets his life into a mid-life crisis tailspin. Meanwhile, Hank’s wife Lily (Mireille Enos), the even-keeled vice principal of the local high school, has had enough of Hank’s nonsense and is questioning her own path in life.
