Using new storylines and imagery, star and first-time director Michael B. Jordan blends a healthy set of callbacks to previous films in the Rocky-Creed franchise in “Creed III.” The result is deeper than fan service, strengthening our sense of Adonis Creed’s place in the world and the kind of legacy he wants to leave. But one of the most powerfully updated callbacks comes courtesy of Donnie Creed’s boxing trunks.
The film refrains from putting Creed in the American flag shorts immortalized in “Rocky” by his father, Apollo (Carl Weathers), until the final fight against former best friend and current rival Damien (Jonathan Majors), and when Creed makes his entrance in them, they are not the same shorts he wore in “Creed II.” Instead, the flag is angled across the shorts and bleached until the colors are almost gone.

Michael B. Jordan made his directorial debut with "Creed III," getting the chance to have the ultimate creative input to the trilogy he's been starring in since 2015. The "Rocky" films developed the blueprint for the ultimate underdog sports movie, and while the "Creed" trilogy obviously owes a great debt to the Sylvester Stallone-starring series that came before, it's clear that directors Ryan Coogler, Steven Caple Jr., and now Jordan have found their own ways to allow these new films to stand on their own. One of the biggest ways "Creed III" found its individuality was by incorporating elements of anime into the blocking, framing, and editing of the fight choreography. Jordan is a longtime fan of anime, frequently citing shows like "Dragon Ball Z" and "Naruto" as massive influences on his approach to directing the film, and even showing co-star Jonathan Majors some of his favorite anime before filming began.

The premiere episode of Netflix’s “Jupiter’s Legacy” ends with an epic hilltop battle between the superhero group known as the Union and villain Blackstar (Tyler Mane). The members of the Union live by a simple but strict moral code of never killing bad guys, but this fight tests the strength of that resolve. Blackstar not only has superhuman speed and stamina, but also a giant anti-matter battery that powers his suit and allows him to release explosive energy capable of taking out everyone and everything in his path. What plays out on-screen is a stunning stunt- and VFX-heavy sequence that is made even more special by the fact that most of the key artists putting it together behind the scenes were women.

“When I first got the scene, it was bits of green screen with no heart, soul, or energy because it was all being put together.

How do you bring a comic book to life? It’s a question that studios have been struggling with since they first began making live-action superhero serials in the 1940s. Netflix’s newest comic book series adapts Image Comics’ metatext on the medium, Jupiter’s Legacy. Created by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, the story centers on two generations of heroes. In its quest to bring this story to life, Netflix has enlisted costume designer Lizz Wolf. Though she’s new to the superhero genre, she has plenty of experience with massive actioners—including Rambo, The Expendables, and Pacific Rim: Uprising–and she dived in head-first to create a unique and vibrant visual landscape which respected the comics while bringing the texture and depth needed to translate the archetypal heroes to the small screen.

When costume designer Lizz Wolf was tasked with creating the superhero outfits for the new series “Jupiter’s Legacy,” based on the comic books by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, she understood the Herculean task that lay ahead of her. What she didn’t realize was how sneaker technology would be integral to her work.
Flying onto Netflix May 7, the series follows two generations of superheroes as the first passes the torch to the next. Spanning timelines but largely set in the present day, the action considers the younger heroes’ struggle to reconcile their identities and their legacy.
Wolf was one of the first crew members tapped by executive producer Steven S. DeKnight, who had helped get Marvel’s “Daredevil” off the ground. “He and Netflix saw the value in trying to develop this world, and I was brought in to build this cinematic universe from the ground up,” Wolf says.

The man who plays Hutch is Ian Quinlan, who has appeared in the films City Hall and Music of the Heart. On television his credits include episodes of Lifestories: Families in Crisis, The Carrie Diaries, The Family, Gotham, Sneaky Pete, and Orange is the New Black.

Costume dramas are certainly nothing new to Ben Daniels, having immersed himself into the world of the British Royals as Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon on The Crown, but Jupiter’s Legacy, and its world of spandex-clad superheroes, brings that notion to a whole new level.
The British born Daniels launched his career on the stage, where he found himself nominated for one award after another, taking home the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2001 for Arthur Miller’s All My Sons. Eight years later he made the move to Broadway. But he’s another of the actors in this cast that has pretty consistently shifted media, in his case stage appearances alternating with films and television (guest appearances and starring roles on Cutting It and Law & Order: UK.)

Failing to win the Manhunt: The Search for America’s Most Gorgeous Male Model reality show competition in 2004 may have been the best thing that could have happened to Matt Lanter, because between that year and 2006 he had recurring or starring roles in the series Point Pleasant, Commander in Chief, Heroes, and Shark. Besides guest roles, he’d star in a number of films, voiced the character of Aquaman in a variety of animated productions from Warner Bros/DC Comics and was a series regular on the cult favorite Timeless.
All of that was eclipsed, however, by his voicing the character of Anakin Skywalker on the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which he began doing in 2008 and continues to do periodically. Now he is taking on the role of George Hutchence, aka Skyfox, on Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy, which will elevate him even higher...

Below-the-line department heads who have the opportunity to work together on more than one film often develop a kind of communications shorthand. For production designer Franco-Giacomo Carbone and costume designer Lizz Wolf, “Creed II” marks their fourth collaboration — a relationship that began with 2008’s “Rambo.” This worked to the great advantage of the eighth installment in the “Rocky” franchise, released by Warner Bros. on Nov. 21.
Carbone chose specific colors for the characters and fight scenes, allowing those visuals to communicate a parallel storyline and on-screen continuity across departments. For instance, emotions like hate, anger and pride were expressed with cold blue hues. “It’s not a good color for protagonist Adonis [Johnson, Apollo Creed’s son, played by Michael B. Jordan],” says Carbone. “But, every time we see Adonis in a positive way, we see him with warmer colors, with reds and golds.”
Wolf, in turn, drew from Carbone’s choices when designing her costumes, making them “reflective of the fight [and set] colors,...

Production begins today in Philadelphia on Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Creed II, starring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, reprising their roles of Adonis Creed and Rocky Balboa respectively. Creed II is the continuation of the Rocky saga and sequel to the 2015 critically acclaimed and crowd-pleasing 2015 hit Creed, which took in more than $170 million at the worldwide box office. Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), who directed the first film, returns to the franchise as an executive producer on Creed II.
The new film is being directed by Steven Caple Jr., who helmed the acclaimed 2016 drama The Land.
“When I wrote and directed Creed, I wanted to tell a human story about a family from a new perspective, while also paying homage to the Rocky characters we’ve all grown up knowing and loving. I’ve known Steven was an amazing filmmaker since our days at USC film school together,...

Looks like Kevin James is going to be leading a Netflix original film, and despite the above featured image, it is a not a Paul Blart: Mall Cop movie. The streaming service has announced today that the actor/comedian will be heading the film entitled True Memoirs Of An International Assassin.
The film's synopsis is as follows:
"A mild-mannered would-be author gets mistaken for a killer-for-hire when his fictional novel about an international assassin is published as a true story. The book is a huge success and he is suddenly kidnapped and taken to Venezuela and forced into an assassination plot."
True Memoirs Of An International Assassin is directed by Jeff Wadlow, who is likely best known for directing Kick-ass 2, and will be hitting Netflix some time in 2016.
While I feel no particular way or another about this film, I'm very interested to see the online interest. Given James'...
