All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).
Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.
As had largely been expected, Richard E. Grant was a delightfully upbeat and uncontroversial host, with no political jokes or any jibes aimed at the guests (although he did reference Will Smith,...

“For me, it’s fantastic. And I love it, to record on set acoustic instruments,” says “TÁR” sound mixer Roland Winke about the experience of recording the orchestral music featured in the film about an embattled conductor (played by Cate Blanchett) preparing for a live performance of Gustav Mahler‘s “5th Symphony.” We talked to Winke, re-recording mixer Deb Adair and supervising sound editor Stephen Griffiths about their work on the film. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Winke set up a Decca tree to catch “the ambient sound” and “the feeling of this room where the music plays,” in addition to the special sound crew that was on-hand to capture the full orchestra. It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).
(By the way, if you think three is a lot of shows to celebrate the television industry’s mostly below-the-line workers, 2020 had Five Creative Arts Emmys shows.)
Sunday’s first show began at 1 p.m. Pt. The second Sunday show, the final one of the two-day 2021 Creative Arts Emmys, begins at 5 p.m. Pt. That’s the presentation that has most of the mainstream categories that don’t fit in next week’s Primetime Emmys.
None of the three Creative Arts Emmys shows are being televised live. Next Saturday, a highlights show of sorts will air on Fxx starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

In the animated feature category, Pixar’s “Soul” added another win to its shelf. The film which follows Joe as he ventures into the Great Before also won the Mpse Golden Reel Award for outstanding achievement in sound editing – feature animation is nominated in the newly combined sound category at the Academy Awards.
Additional Cas winners included “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart,” Disney’s “The Mandalorian” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
During the virtual event, Sound Mixer William B. Kaplan, Cas was honored with the Cinema Audio Society’s highest accolade, the Cas Career Achievement Award. Kaplan has worked on over 155 feature films including “Top Gun,” “Crimson Tide,” “Back to the Future” and “Forrest Gump” which won him an Academy Award.

“Sound of Metal” has won the award for sound mixing in a live-action motion picture at the 57th annual Cas Awards, which were presented by the Cinema Audio Society in a virtual ceremony on Saturday.
The film beat three other Oscar nominees in the Best Sound category, “Greyhound,” “Mank” and “News of the World,” along with “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
The Cas Awards winner has gone on to win the Oscar in the Best Sound Mixing category for the last three years in a row, and five times in the last decade. But this year the Oscars combined Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into a single Best Sound category, so the Cas’ effectiveness at predicting the Oscars has yet to be determined.
On Friday, “Greyhound” won the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Award in the category that in the past most closely corresponded to the Oscars sound-editing award.

I guess I could look at the win last night from the American Cinema Editors (Ace) for The Descendants for Best Editing in a dramatic feature as a sign we may still have an upset at the Oscars, but I think that would be overstepping my bounds. I will, however, say I think it shows The Descendants is a stronger #2 candidate for Best Picture than Hugo is as The Artist remains the clear front-runner in the Best Picture category as it also won last night for Best Editing in a comedy or musical. In the lackluster animation category Rango took the win over Puss in Boots and The Adventures of Tintin where, I guess, we could have seen Tintin win, but I'm having a hard time mustering up any kind of passion one way or another to really care. The Ace winners are listed below along with the other nominees.

2012 Oscar Predictions: Sound Mixing Contenders as the Cinema Audio Society Announces their Nominees
Two categories I have yet to predict in my Oscar predictions are Best Sound Editing and Sound Mixing, primarily because I've been waiting for the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) and Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) to weigh in with their nominees. Today, the Cas delivered and I'm expecting the results from the Mpse today or tomorrow as we are now only a few days away from the Oscar nominations. As for the Cas noms, over the last five years there has been a pretty good track record of the nominees matching Oscar's nominees. From 2006-2009 the nominees matched four out of the five Oscar nominees. Last year, however, was a bit different as only two of the five nominees matched. This year, I'm aiming for four of the five nominees to match once again as my only difference is I have Transformers: Dark of the Moon in my top five over Moneyball.

Former 1970s heartthrob Leif Garrett pleaded no contest Friday (Oct. 15) to heroin possession and will enter a drug rehab program, reports the AP. Garrett was arrested back in February when authorities found him carrying heroin in a Los Angeles subway station.
The case could be dismissed if Garrett completes the terms of the rehab program within a year and a half. "I just think this is in everybody's best interests," said Garrett's attorney, Andrew Flier. He said he was proud of Garrett for entering the plea and recognizing that he needs additional treatment.
Garrett had modest singing hits in the late '70s and played recurring roles on ABC's "Family" and "The Odd Couple," but Garrett was perhaps more famous for his drug and alcohol abuse problems. In 1979, he crashed a car carrying his then-best friend Roland Winkler while drunk and under the influence of quaaludes. The accident left Winkler a paraplegic.

Berlin -- Michael Haneke's "The White Ribbon" may have missed out on the best foreign film Oscar but the Austrian filmmaker is all but certain to sweep the German Film Awards after "The White Ribbon" received 13 nominations for the country's top prize, the Lolas.
"The White Ribbon" picked up Lola noms in all possible categories, including best film, best director and best acting noms for stars Burghart Klaussner and Susanne Lothar.
Cinematographer Christian Berger, whose stark black-and-white images earned him an Oscar nomination, is the favurite to win the Lola for best cinematography at the German Film Awards on April 23 in Berlin.
"When We Leave," a drama from first-time director Feo Aladag, was the big surprise, earning six Lola nominations including ones for best film and best actress for Sibel Kekilli ("Head-On") in her comeback role as a young woman banished from her devout Muslim family.

Former star Leif Garrett's arrest Monday for alleged possession of a controlled substance is only the latest drug-related setback for the 48-year-old in a string of incidents stretching back three decades.
In 1979, shortly before turning 18 and high on a mix of quaaludes and alcohol, Garrett drove off a Los Angeles freeway and careened down an 80-foot embankment. The crash left his friend and passenger, Roland Winkler, paralyzed from the waist down. Winkler's family sued Garrett and won a $7.1 million settlement.
As his singing and acting career faulted in the early '80s — including a disappointing solo album and a small role in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Outsiders" — Garrett continued to struggle with drugs. In 1997 he was arrested for cocaine possession. In...
