Batman as a character has some amazing storylines that would make perfect sense to be adapted into an animated film. Initially, Bruce Timm thought that there was no way it was possible to adapt Batman: Under the Hood, an arc in the comics that served as the sequel to Death in the Family, which infamously killed off Jason Todd, who was serving Batman as his Robin after Dick Grayson’s departure.
Death in the Family
Bruce Timm, speaking to Animation World Network, talked about how he and Alan Burnett first came across the comic with the intention of adapting it. The problem started when the duo realized the amount of work it would take to just set up the story, and the various characters that were making an appearance as the narrative unfolded.
However, the pitch for the film was what ended up convincing the duo to go ahead with it.

When Ali Selim was brought in to helm MCU’s Secret Invasion, he was warned against reading the comics, as the Disney Plus series had nothing to do with the source material. While it’s not wrong for adaptations to deviate from the source material, in the case of MCU, avoiding creators from delving into comics has backfired for them.
On the contrary, Bruce Timm almost rejected a film for not being knowledgeable about the comics it was based on, which ended up being one of the best Batman films of all time.

This post contains spoilers for Shazam: The Fury of the Gods
Shazam and Black Adam have finally begun to fight. Just not in the way you expected. Or maybe even wanted.
Hot off the disappointing opening weekend box office sales of Shazam: The Fury of the Gods, The Wrap released an insider report that blamed Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for undermining the Big Red Cheese’s cinematic future. In it, unnamed sources describe Johnson as a person who “thinks he’s bigger than the movie,” who wants only “to extend his brand and make a brand centered on himself.” That includes demanding that Black Adam cut out the character’s traditional rival, Billy Batson aka Shazam aka Captain Marvel, going for the more flashy Superman.
Not only does the report back up previous claims that Johnson convinced Warner Bros to give Black Adam his own movie instead of debuting him in the first Shazam!

The Real World may be a thing of the past, but one couple from the hit reality TV show is still going strong. Pamela Ling and Judd Winick have been married for two decades. Fans of the MTV show may recall that the couple were both cast in The Real World: San Francisco, which was the third season of the show. But while the duo may have met on the show, their love story actually happened off camera. So how did the pair go from castmates to husband and wife? And what are they up to today?
Pamela Ling and Judd Winick | Arun Nevader / Contributor Pamela Ling and Judd Winick’s love story began on ‘The Real World’ Season 3
Winick and Ling first met on February 12, 1994 on the very first day of filming for The Real World 3. It was already a special day for Winick, because he was celebrating his birthday.

This post contains spoilers for "Black Adam."
DC's "Black Adam" props up Teth-Adam (Dwayne Johnson) as an unconventional super-powered being who reluctantly winds up in a position to protect the modern world from evil. Despite his undefined stance on heroism, Teth-Adam teams up with the Justice Society to stop the Intergang from acquiring a crown of primordial power connected to the demon champion, Sabbac. After Intergang's leader, Ishmael (Marwan Kenzari), manipulates events to trigger the rebirth of Sabbac in his host body, Black Adam and the Justice Society of America attempt to fight this super-powered, awakened demon who seems to be powerful beyond measure. The battle is rife with hurdles, but dogged determination and sacrifice allow Teth-Adam and the others to overpower and kill Sabbac.
There are several differences between "Black Adam" and its comics storyline, including the details of Teth-Adam's origins and the origins of the Jsa members. The...

With Matt Reeves’ The Batman inching towards a release, and plans for new Dark Knight-themed titles at various stages of development, it seems that Warner Bros. and DC Films are keen to compete with Disney and Marvel in terms of output. In fact, one potential future project in the works is a live-action movie with Red Hood/Jason Todd, specifically a new version of the story told in the animated Batman: Under the Red Hood.
According to Geekosity, there’s interest in bringing the tale to the big screen, but how this might work with the planned Robert Pattinson continuity isn’t known at this early stage. What could happen, though, is that Under the Red Hood falls within Zack Snyder or Ben Affleck’s remit for HBO Max, raising the possibility of it joining the many other DC productions that would exist outside of, or adjacent to the main cinematic series.

Chantal Thuy has successfully shapeshifted into a series regular for Season 4 of The CW’s Black Lightning, where she since season 1 has recurred as metahuman Grace Choi.
“Chantal Thuy embodies the character of Grace Choi,” showrunner Salim Akil said in a statement. “I am sure our Black Lightning fans knew, especially those who follow the Grace and Anissa relationship storyline, that having Chantal join as a series regular was only a matter of time. I am elated to finally welcome her officially to the team.”

900 numbers for polling purposes, charging users for each call placed, was a 1980s fad that seemed perfect to employ in comic books for some sort of stunt. Editor Denny O’Neil and DC’s Marketing team, led by Bruce Bristow, conceived of the stunt and Jim Starlin wrote the four-part “Death in the Family” storyline to accommodate the stunt. Jason Todd, the second Robin, never was accepted by fans, either under his father, writer Gerry Conway or the post-Crisis writers Max Allan Collins and Jim Starlin. Callers got to say he would live or die.
It went on to become a media sensation, and a closer than expected vote. It also brought down the wrath of Warner Bros who was unaware of the event and the press attention because, back then, DC was a pimple on the conglomerate’s butt and no one considered telling them.

Batman: The Adventures Continue has been like a warm blanket amidst the cold horror of ::waves at everything::, giving Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, and Ty Templeton the chance to come home to the universe they tended for years and build on ideas and relationships from the old show. And now, a big name from the comics is making his way into animated continuity for the first time.
Chapter nine of Batman: The Adventures Continue is titled “Red Son Rising, Part 1,” and introduces Red Hood to the world of the cartoon. It’s the start of what DC is calling “the home stretch” of Dini, Burnett, Templeton, colorist Monica Kubina, and letterer Josh Reed’s run, and it looks like, from the preview art, Joker is going to force the issue with the Red Hood, who has been hunting him for a while.

210 pages/Rh Graphic/$13.99
Receiving the sixth volume of a continuing series to review can be a daunting task if you have not read the previous five, especially if there is no recap section preceding the story (a complaint I have about most series).
That said, this volume, wrapping the initial storyline takes a little time to get one’s feet wet then you are propelled through the action, figuring things out along the way. Credit to Judd Winick for being adept at doing this so by the end, you’re not just accustomed to the characters but emotionally invested in the team of protagonists trying to protect the world.
The series kicked off in 2015 so readers of this mid-grade series can grow up with the characters and if they’ve outgrown it after this volume, they will be satisfied. And for those who are just finding it,...

I’ve written elsewhere that I seem to have reviewed a whole lot of these over-sized DC Special’s of late. Not a complaint, mind you, far from it. DC could have quite easily stuck out a load of old reprints and hastily cobbled together inventory stuff and put it out and a lot of people would probably have picked it up anyway. They went the other way though, and have curated a lot of nicely done tales, by a mixture of legendary creators and more recent fan favourites. The recent Flash 80 pager I reviewed was especially good. Scanning down the creator list on this Robin book, straight away names like Marv Wolfman, Devin Grayson, Tom Grummett, Dan Jurgens, and Chuck Dixon jump out. I like the fact DC try to get creators particularly associated with the different incarnations of Robin to recreate their magic.

The CW is moving forward with another Arrow spin-off headlined by Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy reprising their Arrow roles in the new superhero series.
The new offshoot, which was teased at TCA by the CW boss Mark Pedowitz, will center around Mia Smoak, known as Green Arrow, and the Canaries Laurel Lance and Dinah Drake.
The project, which comes from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros Television, is being set up as a backdoor pilot that will air as episode from the upcoming eighth and final season of Arrow.
The CW’s The Flash also originally was developed as an Arrow planted spinoff before a decision was made to turn it into a standalone pilot.
McNamara starred in a recurring role as Mia Smoak in the seventh season of Arrow and was promoted to series regular for the forthcoming season. She is a street fighter-turned rebel leader that...

After 67 years, hundreds of issues, a spinoff sketch comedy series and countless imitators, Mad Magazine as it has been known since 1952 is coming to an end, according to the magazine’s former editor, Allie Goertz.

“While there will be no new material after issue #10, @MADmagazine is not gone,” Goertz continued. “I find it deeply sad to learn that there will be no new content, but knowing history repeats itself, I have no doubt that the vintage pieces will be highly (if not tragically) relevant.”

For decades, Mad mascot Alfred E. Neuman took on the world with a cheerful, “What, Me Worry?” But judging from today’s social media reaction, he may have cause for concern.
Writers, editors and others affiliated with the long-running humor magazine took to social media today to lament the apparent passing of a publication that served as the introduction to satire for many. Mad is now owned by DC, which has shuttered a few titles recently and is reorganizing under three specific brands. Some contributors (aka “the usual gang of idiots”) alluded to an email that was sent out informing them of the shuttering, but details remained elusive for the general population.
It may simply be that Mad outlived its cultural significance. It was recently in the news when Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg was compared to Alfred E. Neuman by President Donald Trump. Buttigieg claimed not to get the reference at first.

The Outsiders, at least in the 2003-2007 Judd Winick run (and to a lesser extent the Chuck Dixon penned Batman and the Outsiders run that immediately followed), is one of my favourite ever DC titles. It is also, at least in my opinion, one the the teams that DC seems to neglect for huge periods of time – seemingly making them interchangable with the likes of the Titans and the Justice League; at least in terms of characters and rosters.
This particular version of Batman and the Outsiders apparently stems from Brian Hill’s run on Detective Comics last year and as such it feels a little like new readers, like myself, have actually missed out on a lot of back story that sets up what we’re experiencing in the first issue – especially when it comes to new...

Deadpool and Spider-Man have a long history, and Wade has been getting on Peter's nerves for years.
Spider-Man and Deadpool are like two sides of the same coin. Their outfits look a lot alike, they have similar builds, they both like to joke endlessly as a front to hide their personal issues, etc.
Plus they both have a tendency to annoy Wolverine on a regular basis.
But for a while, they weren't really compatible outside of that. Spider-Man has upstanding morals and despite living a tragic and surreal lifestyle as a superhero, he at least juggles it with something resembling a normal life. Deadpool is stuck in his tragic and surreal lifestyle with no real normalcy mixed in. He’s also responsible for a kill count that’s somewhere in the triple digits (at least) and that is Not something Spider-Man’s cool with.

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Judd Winick to go over his latest endeavor, A Town Called Dragon. The book centers around the town of Dragon, Colorado and the myths and legends that helped to give the town its name. As we find out in issue one, they might not be just legends. Here is a recap of my time with Judd.
Matt: Well, I had the chance to read issue 1, and I loved it.
Judd: Good to hear.
Matt: I did right off the bat want to give some kudos to the colorist, as the art in the book is incredibly well done. I have read a decent amount of fantasy books, so its not like I’m not used to seeing dragons, warriors, etc, but the art stood out from most others.
Judd: Thank you so much, Jamie Grant did a knockout job on the colors.

This week, Legendary Comics takes you to A Town Called Dragon, a new 5-part comic book mini-series from Judd Winick and Geoff Shaw where the last known dragon egg hatches in a small Colorado town. I recently had a chance to catch up with Judd, who talked about the birth of his modern-day dragon story, a non-traditional hero, and he teased what’s coming up in future issues:
Thank you for talking with me about A Town Called Dragon today. Was this an idea you’ve been working on for a while or was it something Legendary brought to you?
Judd Winick: I had been kicking around the idea of basing it around the last dragon and then the last dragon egg. And then I was stuck for the longest time, but a little node if inspiration came in for this element of Northern Exposure meets Jaws, but with a dragon.

Editorial Biases I tend to prefer comic books and graphic novels that are off the beaten path. Even for comics published by mainstream publishers, sometimes you get relatively unique pieces that are not really the norm. We're flooded by superheroes with brightly colored uniforms, exquisitely simple secret identities and a variety of powers, weapons and technology to boot. It's nice sometimes to get something different where the concept of less-is-more almost reigns dominant. Those are the comics I tend to love the most, because they make big statements while understating their premise, their cause, their purpose for telling their story. Whenever I get my...

The people of Dragon, Colorado want to make money off their town’s folkloric namesake, but the community’s scaly legend is a lot more literal than any of them could have imagined. “Every Town Has Its Secrets. This One Breathes Fire.

After centuries of lying buried within the depths of an icy mountain, the world’s last dragon egg finally hatches – endangering modern life as we know it. Now an unlikely group of dangerously unqualified, ordinary citizens must band together, battling the elements – and each other – to slay this menacing creature.

Geoff Shaw drew these covers plus the interior art for Judd Winick's story, described as an "action-packed modern day myth."

While it remains to be seen how horror-centric some of these titles will be, Legendary Comics have announced a few new titles that may be right up the horror readers alley. And to par with their namesake, they have some legendary creators attached to the titles. Grant Morrison, one of the most prolific writers of our age, is working on Annihilator (pictured) with artist Frazer Irving. Judd Winnick, the main voice behind the biographic comic Pedro and Me and a longstanding well received run on Exiles, will be bringing us A Town Called Dragon. Last, but certainly not least, Matt Wagner (creator of Mage and Grendel) is working on Dreadstalker. A small synopsis of the comics follows below.

For as long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with monsters.
Horror comics are a big deal right now. Some of that can probably be attributed to the runaway success of Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s The Walking Dead – which was huge even before the television adaptation – and the fact that zombies in general are more popular than bacon. There are also recent Stephen King adaptations like The Stand and N., the ongoing Buffy the Vampire Slayer continuation of the TV show, Joe Hill’s Locke & Key, Brubaker & Phillips’ Lovecraftian noir Fatale, and “mainstream” horror comics like DC’s Swamp Thing and Animal Man. Heck, even Archie Comics has successfully launched its campy/scary Afterlife With Archie series in time for Halloween this year.

It's Villains Month for DC Comics and they've taken over every title from Detective Comics to Aquaman and beyond! What better way to celebrate than to release a graphic novel featuring all the origins of the most infamous criminals to go up against Batman, Superman, The Flash, Shazam, and all our other favorite super heroes. Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics serves as a companion to the full-length documentary DVD of the same name.
Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics is comprised of 26 origin tales and stories featuring Bane, Ra's al Ghul, Zod, Sinestro, Black Adam, Lex Luthor, Reverse-Flash, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Black Manta, and many more. Each of them highlights a major event in the DC Universe and gives a breakdown of the villain's essential storylines and powers and weapons. If memory serves me well, these two-page introductions to each criminal were featured on DC's website at one point.

Big Brother made headlines early this summer when several houseguests were caught on camera saying racist things. The surprise was not the racism. More than a few people probably didn’t realize that Big Brother was still on. Over a decade ago, CBS radically shook up its stodgy, over-48, Diagnosis: Murder image by debuting three reality TV shows that survive to this day. One of them was Survivor, an addictive zeitgeist sensation which became one of the last genuine broadcast-tv megahits in summer 200. It remains a reliable attraction; its ratings have diminished, but after 26 seasons, it has also outlasted whole generations of ripoffs.

Batwing Volume 2: In the Shadow of the Ancients collects issues #0 and 7 through 12 of the monthly title. The Dark Knight of Africa is a character I was immediately excited and fascinated by when the launch of the New 52 was announced. I'm happy to say that the feeling is still with me.
Four different story arcs are presented in this book. "But There Were Consequences For Us" and "What I Am… Was Born of Death" wrap up the tale started in Volume 1. Batwing must bring down the evil Massacre. Their battle goes international as the butcher travels to Gotham City and plans to assassinate the last two members of the super hero team known as the Kingdom.
"You Have Been Judged Unworthy" pits Batwing against the Talon during the Night of the Owls. The Court of Owls has targeted Lucius Fox for assassination and it's up to Africa's Batman to keep him out of harm's way.

Catwoman Volume 2: Dollhouse consists of issues #7 through 12 of DC Comics' New 52 monthly title. Writer Judd Winick continues penning the tales with artist Adriana Melo favorably handling a majority of the penciling. Guillem March steps in to illustrate for a couple of issues in the middle.
Against the better judgment of her fence, Selina Kyle teams up with a new partner-in-crime. He calls himself Spark because of his electro-powered metahuman capabilities. With barely any time to enjoy the fruits of their thievery, the two come face-to-face with a dangerous killer targeting the street kids of Gotham City, a motivated cop, and a deadly assassin of the Court of Owls. It's a good thing she has nine lives to work with.

After his death in Green Arrow 101, Oliver Queen is replaced as Green Arrow by his son Connor Hawke. The series lasted for 37 more issues before being cancelled in 1998. Connor Hawke also became a temporary member of the Justice League of America in Grant Morrison’s run on Jla even taking out the supervillain The Key with his father’s trick arrows, including the infamous Golden Age refugee that is the boxing glove arrow. However, Oliver Queen’s exploits were chronicled in several out of continuity stories before he was brought back from the dead and rebooted for good.

“The Omac Project” was part of DC’s “Countdown to Infinite Crisis” and came after their previous event “Identity Crisis”. A brief background note to understand this book: in “Identity Crisis”, Doctor Light, a super-lame villain, somehow manages to get into the Jla’s Watchtower without being seen or stopped by anyone and rapes the Elongated Man’s wife Sue Dibny who is conveniently on her own. Some members of the Jla walk in on this scene and are so shocked they decide to permanently alter Light’s personality so he will never again do anything so heinous, nor remember what he did.

Things have been heating up on "Arrow" recently with the introduction of John Barrowman as the sinister Malcolm Merlyn, father of Oliver Queen's best friend Tommy Merlyn. While much has yet to be revealed about the Merlyn clan and what kinds of problems they might pose for Oliver in the future, the name Merlyn has much significance in Green Arrow lore.
This week in Hollywood Justice, we're going to take a look at the Merlyn of the comics, how he has bedeviled Green Arrow over the years, and what makes him such a fitting archnemesis.
Merlyn, A.K.A. Arthur King, made his debut in 1971's "Justice League of America" #94, by Mike Friedrich, Neal Adams, and Dick Dillin. He got his nom de guerre not through any actual feats of mysticism, but for his seemingly magical mastery of the bow and arrow. Hired by the League of Assassins to take out their foe Batman,...

Let me start off by stating the obvious to many of my regular readers. I absolutely love DC Comics. They never fail to do anything they can to meet my petty undeserving demands as a reviewer of their monthly comics and graphic novels. I sit here right now contemplating how I can review all 46 #0 issues they sent me.
Each one is unique in its own way. Different characters and super heroes which somehow all intertwine with one another to make up the vast world we know as the DC Universe. It would take me three weeks just to review them all. Alas, I am only one man so I'm reduced to taking the easy way out. To sum up DC Comics' #0 issues in a simple phrase: they're all wonderful.

Catwoman's newly appointed writer Ann Nocenti has explained her take on the DC Comics anti-heroine. The scribe, who succeeded Judd Winick on the title, told USA Today that she sees Selina Kyle as an "empowerment character" with a "natural conscience". She said: "I know state-raised people who went from orphanage to foster home, and normally they end up in the prison system. She has that kind of an upbringing but she's empowered. "To me, she's kind of an empowerment character. She never steals from the poor - she steals from (more)...
