As My So-Called Life nears its 30th anniversary, Executive Producer Ed Zwick took a walk down memory lane Saturday to remind folks about working on the before-its-time drama that starred Claire Danes.
In a long X thread, Zwick shared an “origin story” about how he was first drawn to the work of Winnie Holzman before he would end up co-EPing her script with longtime producing partner Marshall Herskovitz. Zwick chronicles his work on My So-Called Life, as well as thirtysomething, The Last Samurai and Glory in his upcoming book “Hits, Flops and Other Illusions,” out in February.
“Kristy McNichol played ‘Buddy,’ an adolescent girl on ABC-tv’s Family,” Zwick began. “I’d write surly teenage dialogue and get network notes on my scripts with the initials N.O.B. meaning “not our Buddy.” I vowed someday I’d get to portray real adolescence.”

[Editor’s note: This review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 4, “Old Wounds.”]
The Yellowjackets may not have made it to nationals, but in Season 2, Episode 4, the competition is on.
As the winter of their discontent wears on, the stranded high school students and their actively disassociating coach (Steven Kreuger) are running out of food. The situation is so dire that people are ostensibly stealing raw bear meat from the food stores to eat more than their allotted share (or are they? More on this later). It doesn’t help that the group’s only two hunters can’t find any fresh game, or that they didn’t even catch the group’s main meals: the bear that bowed to Lottie (Courtney Eaton) and gave its life in Season 1 and the birds that mysteriously fell on their roof just one episode prior.
All of that comes to the forefront in Season 2, Episode 4, “Old Wounds,” written by Ashley Lyle,...

This piece contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets" season 2, episode 4.
It's only been a season and some change, and "Yellowjackets" has already given us so much. We've seen cults, blood rituals, amputation, murder, dog murder, possession, dramatic sleepwalking, and no one will be able to forget the ungodly traumatic feast of season 2, episode 2's big cannibalism scene. With the conclusion of this week's episode, "Old Wounds," we may soon be adding another one to that list: resurrection.
While the rest of the girls are placing their bets on the big hunting competition between Nat (Sophie Thatcher) and Lottie (Courtney Eaton), Van (Liv Hewson) and Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) hatch a plan of their own. Throughout the angrier, more unhinged second season, Van has been waking up with Taissa in the middle of the night to follow her around on her sleepwalking adventures. She finds that each time Taissa ventures out, she ends...

The NBC limited series The Thing About Pam, starring Renée Zellweger, concluded its run on Tuesday, April 13, but has clearly made its mark for the network as its top-rated new series of the 2021-2022 season.
The show centers on the 2011 murder of State Farm employee Betsy Faria, which resulted in her husband Russ’s conviction, although he insisted he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated. This brutal crime set off a chain of events that would expose a diabolical scheme deeply involving Pam Hupp (Zellweger).
The series premiered in March and its opening episode performed decently with a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.79 million viewers. Since then, the episode jumped up to a 4.24 in the demo and tallied 14 million viewers – a 5x audience increase – across live, delayed and digital viewing, according to the network. The company also said that the pilot marked NBC’s best digital launch ever.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli’s score for The Thing About Pam, which is set for release via Milan Records on April 15, following the airing of the NBC true-crime ratings hit’s finale.
The Blumhouse Television-produced limited series centers on the 2011 murder of State Farm employee Betsy Faria (Katy Mixon), which resulted in her husband Russ’s (Glenn Fleshler) conviction, although he insisted he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated. This brutal crime set off a chain of events that would expose a diabolical scheme deeply involving Faria’s supposed friend, Pam Hupp (Renée Zellweger).
From Belousova and Ostinelli’s perspective, Pam is someone who “tromps through town like a predatory larger-than-life force that will crush anything that comes her way.”

The 1990 Primetime Emmys ceremony didn’t have any sweeps, but a longtime TV favorite won an overdue award from an unlikely group of presenters, a record was set for the most ties in a single ceremony, a couple of legends were remembered and, despite Academy love being spread around, there were two shows that surprisingly ended the night with zero major wins. Hosted by the unlikely trio of Candice Bergen, Jay Leno and Jane Pauley, the 42nd Emmy Awards ceremony took place on September 16, 1990. Let’s flashback 30 years to the highlights.
Although “Cheers” had won Best Comedy Series three times, its lead actor failed to nab a trophy himself, despite being nominated seven straight years for the classic character. However, Ted Danson finally got his moment on the stage, winning for Best Comedy Actor for his role as Sam Malone on “Cheers.” He quipped, “I suppose this means you’ll be saying,...

Stevie, written by Gordon, who worked on Tatiana Maslany-fronted feature The Other Half, will tell the story of Phillips’ rise from secretary to tour manager to agent to producer in a pre-MeToo era.
Having started as a secretary, working for McA’s Freddie Fields and David Begelman, under the glare of Lew Wasserman, she moved with the pair to Creative Management Associates, where she became Judy Garland’s “shadow”. Though it may seem like a slam-dunk for “Game of Thrones,” the Emmy race for Best Drama Directing could have an interesting spoiler in the mix: Adam McKay, who’s in the running this year for HBO’s new series “Succession.” The TV academy loves to heap accolades on A-list movie directors, especially ones who’ve been on a role as of late.
After making a name for himself with the absurdist comedies “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004) and “Step Brothers” (2008), McKay won critical acclaim and Oscar glory with the politically charged satires “The Big Short” (2015) and “Vice” (2018). The former brought him a win for screenwriting and a nomination for directing, while the latter earned him writing, directing and producing bids. Now he’s returned to television with this pertinent drama about a Rupert Murdoch-esque media mogul (Brian Cox) and his conniving family, for which he helmed the pilot.

The path to parity in television has been a slow one. Women comprised only 27% of key decision-making behind-the-scenes roles, from show creators to directors, writers, producers, editors and directors of photography, for the 2017-18 season, according to the Boxed In report from the Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film at San Diego State University. And that was actually down one percentage point from the previous year.
ReFrame, a coalition of industry pros founded by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute that advocates for equal representation in the entertainment industry, is hoping to change the conversation with its new “stamp for television,” recognizing shows that hire women, and especially women of color, above and below the line. While female-focused storytelling and lead acting roles are key criteria, additional weight is put on behind-the-scenes jobs — from writers, producers and directors to department heads and crew members.
“The intention is not to dictate content.

Facebook Watch’s latest bid to keep your attention for longer than it takes for a puppy to climb stairs is “Sacred Lies,” a dark and blunt adaptation of Stephanie Oakes’ Ya novel, which in turn is based on a Grimm fairy tale. But just in case “fairy tale” makes it seem like a romp, “Sacred Lies” — created by “True Blood’s” Raelle Tucker and produced by Blumhouse TV — immediately reminds its audience that Grimm fairy tales are, well, grim.
The first episode opens with our heroine — or is she? — Minnow Bly (Elena Kampouris) standing above a bruised body, blinking at surrounding cops, and raising her hands in the air, only to reveal that she has no hands at all.
From there, “Sacred Lies” essentially splits into two shows. One is a murder mystery that delves into Minnow’s childhood, which she spent in a cult run by “The Prophet...

Facebook has ordered its first drama series, a half-hour thriller from Blumhouse Television based on a Brothers Grimm story and a contemporary young adult novel.
With the working title Sacred Lies, former True Blood executive producer Raelle Tucker and director Scott Winant will serve as executive producers on the 10-episode series.
Tucker will also serve as showrunner and adapt the source material, the Grimm tale The Handless Maiden and Stephanie Oakes’ 2015 novel The Sacred Lies Of Minnow Bly. Winant will also direct the first two episodes.

The executive producer and writer of HBO's True Blood, Raelle Tucker, and True Blood director Scott Winant have teamed up to develop a fascinating new series with Blumhouse Television called Sacred Lies. Facebook Watch has greenlit a 10-episode first season of the half-hour series and it sounds like it's going to be a crazy unique show!
The series is based on the classic Grimm Brothers tale The Handless Maiden, and Stephanie Oakes’ novel The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly. It follows the story of a handless teen girl "who escapes from a cult and finds herself in juvenile detention, suspected of knowing who killed her cult leader."
Tucker is adapting the story and will also serve as the showrunner. When talking about the project and what makes it unique, explaining:
"This is a young female protagonist we’ve never seen on screen before. She’s complex, brave, funny…and sometimes dangerous.

Naomi Watts stars as Jean Holloway – a therapist who has an unsettling tendency to develop inappropriate connections with those who play a big part within the lives of her patients. Lucy Boynton has been cast in the role of Allison – a 19 year old college drop-out, who is hiding from her mother the fact that she has left education in order to financially support her addictions. Preacher introduces two of the funniest characters on TV in this week's deftly balanced episode, The Possibilities...
This review contains spoilers.
1.3 The Possibilities
Preacher is a world full of interesting, weird characters. There's not a person on the show who isn't messed up in some way or another, from the stars all the way down to the one-off characters. Preacher has one of the deepest benches of interesting characters that you'll find on TV, and one of the highlights of this particular episode is the two mysterious men who are trying to recover the parasite from within Jesse Custer. Fiore and DeBlanc are two of the funniest characters on TV, and any episode that features them hanging out with Cassidy is going to be a funny one indeed.
Every moment with Tom Brooke and Anatol Yusef on screen is a delight, and the angels get to have a couple of fun scenes this week. Their first scene is squaring off with Sheriff Root, which is just a wonderful bit of comedy. Root is questioning, quite rightly, why the two men are there, and why they aren't seeking help from the local authorities if they are the government. The fact that Fiore and DeBlanc didn't actually have a cover story set up before Root shows up is clear from the very beginning, as the two contradict one another or talk over one another with every question before DeBlanc asserts himself and takes over the conversation. Root undercuts the comedy with a pretty horrible story about child abuse and murder (why wouldn't he?) but when Fiore and DeBlanc uncover their cache of weapons, it only underscores just how little attention the two angels actually pay to human suffering; they just wanted Hugo to leave so they could get into their combat gear and go after Genesis.
Of course, since it's Fiore and DeBlanc, they fail miserably. Armed with heavy weapons and bullet-proof vests and helmets, the two make their walk towards Jesse's church only to be run down by Cassidy driving the church van; Scott Winant makes sure this scene comes out of nowhere, and we get a build-up for a huge payoff laugh. Two more bodies to dispose of. At least, until, the two men show up again while Cassidy is looking for garbage bags to dispose of the bodies he'd left outside. Cassidy's 'kill first, ask questions never' paranoia works out in his favour, usually, but it doesn't help the angels any. However, the scenes are very funny, and Brook and Yusef deserve all the screen time they get, because their deadpan comedy is very much needed as the rest of the episode gets a little bit heavier.
That's one of the interesting tonal dilemmas that Preacher has. Just what kind of show is it? Is it a supernatural drama? Certainly, Jesse Custer seems to be wrestling with his tremendous power. Is it a conspiracy drama? Well, Danni (Julie Dretzin) wasn't dropping off information to a man at a snuff film convention just for fun. There must be some power behind the appearance of the angels, as well. Cassidy and Jesse could easily fill out the lead roles in a buddy comedy, while Tulip seems determined to turn every episode into a crime caper. It's funny, but it's also very dark, usually at the same time. There's some serious philosophical discussions, but also plenty of pop culture references.
Chris Kelly, who wrote tonight's episode, gets some credit for being able to work that delicate balance. I mean, there's an implied snuff film, and one of the characters is abusing both his wife and son, and yet the show packs laughs in wherever possible. Every horrible thing is counterbalanced by some comedy, be it dark like the many deaths of Fiore and DeBlanc or light like Cassidy wandering around in a poncho and giant straw hat to hide from the sun. There's just enough lightness to counterbalance the terrible things that are going on just below the surface. I mean, in one small town you've got a paedophile, a failed suicide, at least one wife-beater, and that's not even going into the mysterious stranger watching snuff films or the fact that Odin Quincannon has to be some kind of monster given he's being played by Jackie Earle Haley.
Will the show be able to keep up that deft balance between light and dark? I don't know, but I can certainly appreciate the great pains they're taking to stay true to the source material while making it slightly more palatable for cable television purposes. Those are the big questions for the show as a viable television entity. Can it keep Preacher fans happy without running afoul of television marketing executives? Can the show delve into dark places or philosophically difficult areas without alienating viewers? So far so good, but if this show doesn't get any protest think-pieces written about it before the end of the season, I think it's not doing its job.

Agent Carter, Season 1, Episode 3: “Time and Tide”
Written by Andi Bushnell
Directed by Scott Winant
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
First things first, “Time and Tide” is a very boring hour of television compared to the boom of a start Agent Carter got off to in its first two episodes. It’s one thing to spend all of a season’s budget in the pilot, it is another thing to make that explicitly clear by having the very next installment turn out dull as dirt. Through the first 48 minutes or so of the episode, close to nothing happens besides small talk and exposition between various characters. What’s worse, much of this dialogue is used to dispense information the audience should already know, or at least be able to guess is coming a mile away. For a limited event series currently confined to eight episodes, an entire...

This post contains plot details of the True Blood series finale, “Thank You,” which aired on Aug. 24. Read the recap.
True Blood showrunner Brian Buckner has done some post-finale reading and knows fans have questions. During a conference call with reporters, he answered some of them. Here’s what you need to know:
• Why did we not see the face of the man Sookie ended up with? “The idea was that we wanted Bill to be correct when he said that Sookie could have a normal life, the twist, of course, being that Sookie chose to keep her power and...

True Blood, Season 7, Episode 10, “Thank You”
Written by Brian Buckner
Directed by Scott Winant
Aired Sundays at 9pm Est on HBO
On this week’s (final) episode, Bill makes a difficult request of Sookie, Jessica and Hoyt make a plan for their future, and Pam and Eric start a new business together.
After such a solid final season, True Blood‘s finale is almost a disappointment. Too many storylines feel forced or rushed, and the ending, though happy, rings a little false. Of course, the show didn’t exit without releasing a few more shocking surprises–including a pivotal moment that involves the death of a major character since series’s beginning.
Honestly, not many scenes stand out in the series finale (save a bloody Eric head-bobbing in his car). “Thank You” mainly serves as a chance to wrap up as much story as possible, and the effect is a...

All in all this final season of "True Blood" has been a cut above the last couple but still nowhere near the glory days of its early years. We're hoping it goes out on a high note, and here's a sneak peek of what's ahead in Episode 7.10, "Thank You."
Mostly, though, we're hoping it's Led Zeppelin's "Thank You" that will be playing when the final credits roll. Do you agree?
Episode 7.10 - “Thank You” (air date 8/24/14)
Sookie (Anna Paquin) weighs a future with and without Bill (Stephen Moyer).
Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) struggle with their uncomfortable partnership with Mr. Gus (Will Yun Lee) while Andy (Chris Bauer) comes upon an unexpected inheritance.
Written by Brian Buckner; directed by Scott Winant.
