Christopher Durang, one of American’s most acclaimed and accomplished playwrights whose works like Beyond Therapy, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You and the Tony-winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike were as incisive as they were absurdly comic, died Tuesday night at his home in Pipersville, Pa., in Bucks County. He was 75.
His agent, Patrick Herold, confirmed that Durang died as a result complications of his 2016 diagnosis with logopenic primary progressive aphasia (Ppa), a form of Alzheimer’s disease that impedes the ability to process language. He remained out of the public spotlight since his condition was made public in 2022. In February, New York’s Dramatists Guild announced that the playwright would receive its 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award on May 6, placing Durang on a prestigious roster alongside such past awardees as John Guare, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Miller.

Mary Louise Wilson has been a luminary force in the theatre world for nearly five decades. The veteran actor's performances have ranged from a Tony Award-winning portrayal of Edith Bouvier Beale in Grey Gardens to a Drama Desk Award-winning role as legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland in Full Gallop, which she co-authored with Mark Hampton. But she hasn't limited her talents to the stage. Wilson's astonishing resume also features roles on Louis C.K.'s award-winning television show Louie, Amazon's recent hit Mozart in the Jungle, and the Academy Award nominated film Nebraska. The biting wit and brutal honesty that Wilson brings to her many outstanding performances is once again illuminated in her forthcoming memoir My First Hundred Years In Show Business Published by The Overlook Press Hardcover 28.95 Isbn 978-1-4683-1085-6 Publication Date July 13, 2015.

Writer/director Ron Nyswaner recently debuted his first documentary feature film at SXSW last week. She's The Best Thing In It follows famous Broadway and television actress Mary Louise Wilson as she teaches a character acting class to a group of college students in New Orleans. I had the chance to sit down with both of them to discuss acting, the filmmaking process, and what it means to live the life of an artist.
Slackerwood: Ron, you're known for these intense narrative stories (a la Philadelphia, The Painted Veil). What drew you to Mary Louise's story and, furthermore, made you decide to do it as a documentary?
Ron Nyswaner: One of the reasons is I could control every aspect of it. I've made my living for many years as a feature film writer and, unlike a playwright, the screenwriter does not often have full creative control. I was...

Writer/director Ron Nyswaner once talked to me about how he thought he was considered a "niche writer" in Hollywood. In an interview at the 2013 Austin Film Festival, Nyswaner says, "If you know a story about someone who's been beaten to death with a baseball bat because he was dating a transgender woman, call me. I do those things [stories] really well."
I prepared myself for that same grit when I watched Nyswaner's film She's The Best Thing In It, and was pleased to see that same kind of intensity manifested in a different way.
This film is Nyswaner's directorial debut as a documentary filmmaker. It follows award-winning actress Mary Louise Wilson as she embarks on teaching a college acting class in her hometown of New Orleans. Now in her 70s, Wilson is seen by some as a "has been." Photos and film clips take us through her history of stardom in the 70s,...

Screenwriter Ron Nyswaner has never shied away from the challenge of switching between different formats of storytelling, having written for film and television -- the latter of which includes credits on "Ray Donovan" and the upcoming season of "Homeland." Therefore, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that his latest venture happens to be a documentary. "She's The Best Thing In It" follows Tony-winning actress Mary Louise Wilson as she tries her hand at teaching the craft of acting to the next generation of performers. The film also features interviews with the likes of Frances McDormand and Melissa Leo, who provide additional commentary various topics related to performing. Although the trailer seems to emphasize Wilson's striking similarity -- both physically and psychologically -- to the late Elaine Stritch, who herself was the subject of a widely beloved 2013 documentary, it would be unfair to both women if we were to take their similarities for.

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.

Playing ex-lovers and semi-siblings in the emotional shootout of a lifetime, Sam Rockwell and Nina Arianda will reprise their summer vacation performances in Sam Shepard’s intense, intimate 1983 play on Broadway beginning next September. The show was widely viewed as a likely New York transfer, and the move signifies not only the draw of star-power (and a great work) but of good old-fashioned connections.
This revival was mounted last July at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, where it earned considerable praise (though not from everyone). In New York, it will run at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, the Broadway flagship of the nonprofit Manhattan Theatre Club. Williamstown’s new artistic director, Mandy Greenfield, recently took over the esteemed Berkshires venue after a 10-year run at Mtc, most recently as artistic producer, i.e. number two to a.d Lynne Meadow. Greenfield is one of the most admired and well-liked producers in the nonprofit world.

Millennium will launch the film into Oscar season, and will campaign to be reckoned in Academy season. The film stars Greta Gerwig, Dianne Wiest, Kyra Sedgwick, Charles Grodin, Dylan Baker, Dan Hedaya and Tony winners Billy Porter, Nina Arianda and Mary Louise Wilson. Roth’s novel was adapted by Buck Henry and Michal Zebede.
While Pacino and Levinson have both won Oscars in the past, the filmmaker tells me that getting to this place was one of the most unusual experiences in his long career, including the fact they made this movie dirt cheap for around $2 million. “You’re in this business so long, you...

Starting its limited release in the Us earlier in the month, and arriving in the UK at the end of next week, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska has been one of the most talked-about films on the festival circuit this year.
Payne’s follow-up to The Descendants had its world premiere at Cannes in the spring – you can read our review here – and has been tipped to earn Bruce Dern a Best Actor nomination ever since.
Last week, Paramount released two new character featurettes for Dern and his on-screen wife, Kate Grant (June Squibb). And as promised, the studio has returned this week with the final profile for Dern’s on-screen son, David, played brilliantly by Will Forte.
After receiving a sweepstakes letter in the mail, a cantankerous father (Bruce Dern) thinks he’s struck it rich, and wrangles his son (Will Forte) into taking a road trip to claim the fortune.

While we all wish that those ridiculous pop-up ads and promotional flyers claiming we've won a prize were actually real, they're always bogus. Yet, there comes a time in an aging man's life when the chance to be rewarded, and to achieve what you never did, conjures an unrelenting hopefulness, which a scam -- no matter how blatant -- could ever extinguish.
In Alexander Payne's "Nebraska," Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) is that aging man, one who receives a certificate in the mail claiming he's won a million-dollar sweepstakes. Resolute in claiming his prize, Woody leaves his home in Montana for Lincoln, Nebraska -- even if it means walking there.
His wife (June Squibb) can't handle Woody's stubborn antics, so she calls her two sons David (Will Forte) and Ross (Bob Odenkirk) to help her out. When they fail to hammer any sense into Woody, Dave reluctantly decides to entertain...

No sooner than Masterworks Broadway's new release of Seven Come Eleven A Gaming Gambol starts playing, listeners will find themselves transported to the intimacy of The Upstairs Room, lined with lavish, red fabric and soft light emanating from antique globes. We easily picture ourselves sitting at a small table amidst New Yorkers enjoying a night out on the town. As Julius Monk greets his live audience and us listeners, in our mind's eye we can see the lights dimming and we get lost in the enthusiastic performances of Philip Bruns the father on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, the original Morty Seinfeld on Seinfeld, Ceil Cabot, Rex Robbins 1974 Gypsy Revival, Steve Roland, Donna Sanders, and Mary Louise Wilson 1998 Cabaret revival, Grey Gardens, who are accompanied by William Roy and Carl Norman at the plural pianos.

Amy Herzog's "4000 Miles” and Kirsten Greenidge's "Milk Like Sugar” were among the top winners at the 57th annual Obie Awards on Monday. Presented by the Village Voice, the awards honor excellence in the Off and Off-Off-Broadway theater."Where exactly is Off-Off-Broadway?" joked presenter Eric McCormack. "Nobody knows," answered his co-presenter Lily Rabe. "4000 Miles," currently playing at Lincoln Center's Mitzi Newhouse Theatre, was named best new American play, an honor accompanied by a $1,000 prize for Herzog. Just when you thought there was a brief pause in the theater award nomination season, another organization announces candidates for its honors. The recipients are playwright Edward Albee; Gerard Alessandrini, who created the "Forbidden Broadway" series of revues; actor Kathleen Chalfant; actor Catherine Russell, who just celebrated 25 years playing the same role in "Perfect Crime," the longest-running show in Off-Broadway history; and actor Mary Louise Wilson. The Drama League Awards may not be quite as prestigious as the Tonys, but they have a few years on them. Established in 1922 and made official in 1935 (the Tonys began in '47), the awards honor the best in theater both on and off Broadway. The League announced their nominations today, and the list includes many of the names we expect to be seeing from the Tonys when they announced their nominations next Tuesday. Raven-Symone (currently starring in "Sister Act" on Broadway), Megan Hilty and Justin Long announced the nominees for the awards' five categories -- Distinguished Production of a Play, Distinguished Production of a Musical, Distinguished Revival of a Play, Distinguished Revival of a Musical and the Distinguished Performance Award, for which more than 50 actors -- male and female -- were nominated. The winner can only receive the award once during his or her career, according to Broadway World, which...

Veteran actor Mary Louise Wilson modestly insists there are few roles she can play. So, when a part like Vera, a feisty, multi-leveled 91-year-old, comes along it's a no-brainer. Wilson is deeply connected to Vera and the play, "4000 Miles" by Amy Herzog. "Vera is tough and I relate to her feeling, 'I happen to be old. I didn't mean to be,'" Wilson quips. "Like Vera, I don't feel old."Now playing at the Lincoln Center's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, "4000 Miles" is an intergenerational drama with comic elements recounting the relationship between a deeply troubled 21-year-old (Gabriel Ebert) and his grandmother who remains intellectually and emotionally alert despite physical decline. With deadpan delivery and well-timed pauses, Wilson evokes a woman facing her end with dignity and humor after a full if not always happy life. Her slightly hunched back and slow shuffle are spot-on.Interestingly, Wilson says Vera's posture and gait.

In an interview with Esquire from back in May, Louis Ck explained the way he now approaches movie studios when he looks to re-enter that universe: “Just give me $8 million. I’m not telling you what it’s about and I’m not telling you who’s in it.” Anyone with even a basic understanding of how most movies get made will know that for virtually any studio executive, this is an absurd proposal. Yet Ck’s almost adversarial stance to the industry is merely logical: after all, he’s getting away with it on TV.
He’s earned the right to feel entitled to exceptional treatment. After many years of false starts – The Dana Carvey Show, Pootie Tang, and especially the HBO one-season-wonder Lucky Louie – Ck has finally found his ideal vehicle, and all he had to do to realize it was…well, everything. Louie, now in its second season on FX,...

NEW YORK -- Spring AwakeningSteven Sater-Duncan Sheik musical, which combines pop-rock sensibilities with a story set in 19th century Germany, will be considered for best musical, score, book, director, choreography and orchestration as well as for leading actor (Jonathan Groff), featured actor (John Gallagher Jr.) and three design awards.
The nominations for the 61st annual Tony Awards, presented by the League of American Theatres and Producers and the American Theatre Wing, were announced by Jane Krakowski and Taye Diggs at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
Right behind with 10 nominations were Tom Stoppard's trilogy The Coast of Utopia and the musical Grey Gardens, which figures to provide the stiffest competition for Spring. Based on the Maysles brothers' documentary, Grey also received noms for best musical, book, score, director and orchestration as well as two acting nominations: Christine Ebersole for leading actress and Mary Louise Wilson for featured actress. Ebersole is favored to take home her second Tony (she also won for 42nd Street), but previous multiple winners Audra McDonald (110 in the Shade) and Donna Murphy (LoveMusik) will receive strong consideration. Last season, Ebersole collected several prizes for her performance as the eccentric Edie Beale, Jacqueline Onassis' cousin, during the show's off-Broadway run at Playwrights Horizons. The Tonys are for Broadway productions only.
The Stoppard trilogy, a philosophical-political rumination on prerevolutionary Russia, earned noms for best play, director and five for acting: Brian F. O'Byrne (lead actor), Billy Crudup and Ethan Hawke (featured actor) and Martha Plimpton and Jennifer Ehle (featured actress). Coram Boy, the British import by Helen Edmundson, received the second-most nominations among plays but did not receive a nom for best play. In a curious bit of logic, though, director Melly Still did get a nomination.
Radio Golf, the final installment of the late August Wilson's 10-play cycle about the black American experience in the 20th century, received four nominations: best play, scenic design (David Gallo) and two for acting (Anthony Chisolm and John Earl Jelks in the featured actor category).
Among revivals, Journey's End (six) and 110 in the Shade (five) led the way for plays and musicals, respectively. In addition to best revival, Journey earned recognition for direction, scenic and lighting design and for two of its actors: Boyd Gaines (lead) and Stark Sands (featured). 110 in the Shade is in the running for musical revival, lead actress (McDonald), featured actor (John Cullum), orchestrations and lighting design.
Spring, which uses rock 'n' roll to convey the teen angst of 19th century German schoolchildren, opened in the beginning of the season off-Broadway, at the Atlantic Theater, before moving uptown in the fall.
