Saturday Night Live gave Peacock a pitch for a new Family Matters reboot, just after the NBC streamer dropped a trailer for its dramatic Fresh Prince series Bel-Air.
The trailer-like sketch features sweeping clips of Chicago, that follow a slightly familiar figure donning bright stripes through seedy streets. Chris Redd then appears as the beloved Family Matters nerd Steve Urkel, who was played by Jaleel White in the original series. Instead of his cheery attitude, Redd’s Urkel takes on a more cynical view of the world. As do other characters from the family comedy.
“The goofy characters you loved in the ’90s with absolutely none of the fun or the charm,” the sketch describes the series, aptly titled Urkel.
The sketch also featured host Ariana DeBose, Ego Nwodim, Mikey Day and Kenan Thompson. Even in the darker tone, Urkel’s still his quirky self – kinda. When he catches Day...

2020 sucked, but at least we had the ’90s sitcom “Family Matters.”
The former T.G.I.F. sitcom, which aired on ABC from 1989-1998, saw a massive uptick in minutes watched last year, according to a Nielsen study. All told, “Family Matters,” was watched for nearly 11.4 billion minutes, up a whopping 392% from 2019’s tally of 2.3 billion minutes.
Yes, we did that. (Shoutout to you Urkel fans.)
That viewership, like all in this story, includes everyone age 2 or older — a giant demo generally referred to as “total viewers.”
“Family Matters,” which features an all-Black cast, follows the Winslow family as they deal with various misadventures, many of them caused by their pesky next-door neighbor, ultra-nerd Steve Urkel (Jaleel White).
The show also starred Reginald VelJohnson, Kellie Shanygne Williams, Darius McCrary, Jo Marie Payton and Rosetta LeNoire. “Family Matters” ran for 215 episodes. More episodes means more opportunity for racking up big viewership minutes.

Children of the ’90s were raised by ABC’s iconic comedy block of Tgif sitcoms which included the multicam comedies like Boy Meets World, Family Matters, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Perfect Strangers which provided wholesome family-friendly stories that have remained timeless with G-rated delight. The fandom surrounding the shows continues to thrive with nostalgic audiences and the Hulu’s resurgence of these shows affectionately called TGIHulu feeds that to a whole new generation. Boy Meets World creator Michael Jacobs and show star Ben Savage were joined on the Atx dais by Family Matters creator William Bickley and show star Kellie Shanygne Williams as well as Sabrina the Teenage Witch creator Nell Scovell to walk down memory lane and why the classic sitcoms continue to resonate with their surprisingly relevant moral tales.
Let’s not kid ourselves — there is a certain cheesiness that comes with the shows that were part of the Tgif lineup.

"Hey, what other old shows could we bring back?"
That's a question being asked all over Hollywood, now that Fuller House worked America up into a nostalgia frenzy. A little credit is due to the Disney Channel's Girl Meets World, which proved that these old shows could benefit from being bumped into the modern era and given a new generation of kids who need to learn life lessons. It's well into its reboot season, but right now Fuller House is the revival show that's generated buzz, press and more than a few conversations about pop culture nostalgia.

Washington -- It's a provocative question: Did Kellie Williams, who played Steve Urkel's girlfriend Laura Winslow on the TV sit-com "Family Matters" in the late 1980s and '90s, give a $25,000 kickback in the scheme that sent former D.C. Council Chairman Harry Thomas Jr. to federal prison?
That's what Washington City Paper's Loose Lips thinks might have happened:An examination of court records, tax filings, and emails obtained through several Freedom of Information Act requests raises the question of whether Kellie Williams, the actress who played Laura Winslow, is the unnamed "Individual #1" who prosecutors say in court records used a youth arts program to help Thomas steal city money.
Thomas resigned from the council in January and later pleaded guilty in a scheme where he admitted to stealing more than $350,000 in government funds and filing false tax returns. In May, Thomas was sentenced to 38 months in prison.

Family Matters follows straight-talking Harriette Winslow (JoMarie Payton), her police officer husband Carl (Reginald VelJohnson), and three children; Eddie (Darius McCrary), Laura (Kellie Shanygne Williams), and Judy (Jaimee Foxworth). Harriette's widowed sister, Rachel Crawford (Telma Hopkins), her young son Richie (Bryton James), and Carl's mother Estelle (Rosetta LeNoire) also live with them.
Midway through the first season, nerdy neighbor Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) was introduced. He quickly became a recurring character and then a series regular. It wasn't long before each episode featured an Urkel-focused storyline.
In part one of our interview, Payton set the record straight about why she left midway through the final season of Family Matters (it wasn't why many people think it was). In part two, Payton talks about the series finale and her rumored cameo, if she keeps in touch with her former castmates, and if she'd be open...

Would you like geeky and goofy Steve Urkel to come to your house?
A '90s sitcom, Family Matters began as a spin-off of ABC's popular Perfect Strangers. The adventures of the Winslow family and one very nerdy neighbor lasted for eight seasons.
Carl Winslow (Reginald VelJohnson) is a Chicago policeman and his wife, Harriette (Jo Marie Payton, later Judyann Elder), is the chief of security for the Chicago Chronicle. Their children are Eddie (Darius McCrary), Laura (Kellie Shanygne Williams), and little Judy (Jaimee Foxworth). Also living with them are Harriet's widowed sister (Telma Hopkins), her young son Richie (Bryton McClure), and Carl's feisty mother, Estelle Winslow (Rosetta LeNoire).
In the beginning, stories were slated to center around the Winslow parents and kids. But, when Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) showed up, that all changed. The character became an overnight sensation...
