The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

We haven’t long said goodbye to the last awards season, but already next year’s hopefuls are starting to make themselves known.
Here is a list of ten movies in 2012 to watch out for – with all the ingredients of an Oscar-nominated film, we’ll be hearing much more about them in the coming months.
1: Lincoln (UK release, 25th January 2013)
Although not released internationally until January, it just creeps into the Oscar eligibility with a late December release in the States. The Civil War Biopic is directed by Spielberg, scored by John Williams, with a cast including Daniel Day-Lewis as Abe Lincoln, Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Field, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
If you want to place an early bet on the 2013 Best Picture winner, this is it.

Exclusive: Vanguard Films and Animation president and CEO John Williams has locked a deal for screenwriter-author Ross Venokur to write three animated comedy/family feature films. The deal comes after they collaborated on Galaxy High School, a project being developed in partnership with 1492 Films and DreamWorks. "Ross was also a fantastic contributor to crucial drafts of Space Chimps, and he wrote a hilarious CGI/live-action hybrid script for us called The Gnome King," Williams said. Venokur, who makes his living writing novels for children, starts the new deal with The Nut House, a parody of heist films, with critters as the perpetrators. Venokur will follow with a script called Charming, a revenge comedy about what happens when Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty all end up with Prince Charming -- who's the same guy and who learns the perils of providing happy endings for all three. Venokur's repped by ICM and Hung Entertainment Group.

There are a few different Wizard of Oz inspired films currently in development right now in Hollywood including Sam Raimi's The Great And Powerful Oz for Disney. Josh Olson (A History of Violence) is developing a sequel to Oz, which focuses on Dorothy's granddaughter who returns to Oz to fight evil. The other film is simply called Oz, which is set up over at Warner's New Line, and is being produced by Twilight's Temple Hill. Then there is John Boorman who is developing a CGI version of the story based on the original novel by Franck L. Baum.
Now there's another Oz film being made called Oz Wars that will be created in a CGI/Stop Motion hybrid animated style. According to the press release the film "transforms the Oz narrative into a contemporary, freaky action-packed PG-13 audience pleaser, with Dorothy caught up in a whirlwind of warrior witches,...

It looks like John Stevenson will not be working with DreamWorks again for a long time, if at all. Today Stevenson announced the upcoming projects that he is working on with Vanguard Films.
John Stevenson has signed a producing/directing pact with Vanguard Films, and has begun work on directing Alien Rock Band for Vanguard. Rock Band is a mix of live-action and CGI that follows a garage band from Earth that journeys across the Universe for a chance to quality for the Intergalactic Battle of the Bands.
Vanguard Films has directed such duds as Valiant, Happily N’Ever After, Space Chimps and Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back. Hopefully bringing the likes of Stevenson on board to produce and direct will be a step into financial and critical success.
A new strategy has been put into place to prepare for the upcoming films according to a press release.

Rumpelstiltskin, voiced by head of story Walt Dohrn, was my favorite character in the DreamWorks Animation hit "Shrek Forever After." Here's my fun interview with Dorhn as we talked about:
His involvement with the film
Is this really the final "Shrek" film?
Will he be working on the "Puss in Boots" spin-off?
What he'll miss most about working on the "Shrek" films?
Have fun!
Here's more info on "Shrek" from Yahoo:
After challenging an evil dragon, rescuing a beautiful princess and saving your in-laws' kingdom, what's an ogre to do? Well, if you're Shrek, you suddenly wind up a domesticated family man. Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, a reluctant Shrek now agrees to autograph pitch forks. What's happened to this ogre's roar? Longing for the days when he felt like a "real ogre," Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek...

Taken in the right direction this next new project has the potential to be a futuristic version of Jurassic Park: Warner Bros. is developing a movie behind the popular quasi-science The Future is Wild TV shows that hypothesize about what future forms of life on the planet may look like.
The first series of Tfiw debuted on Animal Planet back in 2002 and became a hit. Spinoffs include books, comics, an animated kids show and even a theme park ride (at least that's what Variety said, so hold them accountable.) The show features interviews with real biologists talking about how evolution could unfold for many present day species over the next 200 million years. Needless to say some of the future critters aren't very friendly like the Deathgleaner, a giant flesh-eating bat, or the Snowstalker, something big and furry that you definitely don't want to bump into while out for a stroll.

Warner Bros. is getting wild, teaming up with "Shrek" producer John Williams to develop a feature take on the environmental television hit "The Future Is Wild."
The seven-part series, conceived by John Adams and produced by a consortium of global players including Discovery Channel and German network Zdf, aired on Animal Planet six years ago. It depicted life on Earth hundreds of millions of years into the future, when an ice age has wiped out all humans and new hybrid creatures roam the planet (sample names: the babookari, the cryptile and the shagrat).
The jeremiad, which took the form of a nature doc, used computer imaging to tell its story and relied on a host of scientists to construct its futuristic world. The project also spawned companion books, theme-park rides, DVDs and games. Producers are peddling a new series with similar themes at the upcoming Mipcom TV market.
