Redgrave Wilde About Oscar's Mother
Celebrated actress Vanessa Redgrave will pay homage to Oscar Wilde's mother Lady Wilde in a special ceremony in London tomorrow. Redgrave, who played Lady Jane Francesca Wilde in Wilde (1997) alongside Stephen Fry, is to unveil a plaque outside Lady Wilde's former home in Oakley Street, Chelsea, in central London. Oscar Wilde whose sexual adventures scandalized Victorian Britain, was devoted to his mother. He once wrote, "All poets love their mothers. I worship mine." Lady Wilde herself was also a poet and essayist, as well as a passionate Irish nationalist. The current reverence for Lady Wilde is in direct contrast to her treatment during the latter years of her life - left to die in poverty in 1896 when her son was serving a prison sentence for his homosexuality.
