Bootsy Collins assembles a crew of influential artists like Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, and Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart for the P-Funk legend’s latest single, “The Influencers.”
Fantaazma and Westcoast Stone, a pair of artists on Collins’ Bootzilla Records, also appear on the track, which offers a preview of what the bassist has been cooking up at his Cincinnati studio over the past year.
“I am an influencer, you are an influencer,” Collins said of the track in a statement. “Together we influence change within our journey through life. So hold on tight,...

On Jan. 19, the Mothership will land on Hollywood Boulevard when George Clinton officially gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “It feels good as shit,” he tells Rolling Stone of the honor on a phone call from his home in Tallahassee, Florida. “I’m trying to think of some jokes to say, but the truth is that I’m proud as hell.”
The ceremony honoring the Parliament-Funkadelic mastermind — whose music added psychedelic and Afrofuturistic flares to funk, effectively laying the groundwork for hip-hop — will take place at 11:30 a.

Trugoy the Dove, co-founding member of the iconic hip-hop group De La Soul, has died at the age of 54.
A cause of death has not yet been revealed. However, Trugoy was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in recent years. Notably, he did not join fellow De La Soul members Posdnuos and Maseo at last weekend’s Grammys tribute to hip-hop.
Hailing from Long Island, De La Soul is considered one of the most innovative and influential groups in hip-hop history. Trugoy, whose real name was David Jude Jolicoeu, formed the group alongside high school friends Vincent Mason (aka Maseo) and Kelvin Mercer (aka Posdnuos). The trio went on to lead a loose collective of like-minded New York hip-hop groups including A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers.
De La Soul’s debut album, 1989’s 3 Feet High and Rising, was unlike anything that had been heard in hip-hop before, with its eclectic mix of samples,...

Bootsy Collins presides over a kaleidoscopic funktopia in the video for his new song “Hip Hop Lollipop,” a remake of “Club Funkateers” from his recent album, The Power of the One. The clip features Hamburg artist Fantaazma rapping and dancing around clips of Collins singing the “Funkateers” chorus — “How much you got, how much you gon’ get?” The song features a virtuosic bass solo break by Victor Wooten that’s so hot sparks come flying off his instrument in the clip, as well as impressive saxophone licks by Branford Marsalis.

For a moment in the early Seventies, the House Guests were the hottest new funk group in Ohio. Its members, which included bassist Bootsy Collins and his brother, guitarist Phelps “Catfish” Collins, among others, had just finished backing James Brown on tracks like “Super Bad” and “Sex Machine” and had returned to their hometown of Cincinnati to try something different. They drafted singer Rufus Allen, who wasn’t afraid to do James Brown–style splits, and landed gigs opening for everyone from Gladys Knight and the Pips to George Clinton’s Funkadelic.

Funk legend Bootsy Collins has teamed with Chew Fu for a thumping new remix of his 2011 James Brown tribute, “Jb — Still the Man” on what would’ve been the Godfather of Soul’s 86th birthday.
Years before he linked up with Parliament and Funkadelic, Collins famously served as the bassist for Brown’s backing band, the J.B.’s, during a short but prolific period during which he recorded such classics as “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine,” “Talkin’ Loud and Sayin’ Nothing” and “Super Bad.” Collins...

Who am I?
Last year I wrote an article called the Middleman. ComicMix and Bleeding Cool ran versions of the piece. Written during a time the news was full of accounts of unarmed black men and women being killed. I was also diagnosed with severe depression during that period. My article was my account of what series of events may end my life. I firmly believe as an African American man my life can be cut short by simply exercising rights that white men take for granted.
White men can say anything they want at any time without giving it a second thought. Once, Denys Cowan and I were told “carry our bags” by two white guys in a Texas airport. They were joking and thought the whole thing hilarious. If we were joking with them Denys and I would have been the first to laugh. We weren’t and we didn’t.

While James Brown fans already got the opportunity to see Chadwick Boseman as the Godfather of Soul in this summer's Get on Up, Alex Gibney (Finding Fela, Taxi to the Dark Side) tackled the real thing in HBO's Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown, a new documentary on the singer that premiered Monday night.
More hagiography than warts-and-all bio — the film omits Brown's arrests on weapons charges and only mentions one instance of many domestic abuse allegations in passing — the Mick Jagger-produced film still enlists many of Brown's former musicians,...

Alex Gibney has nothing but nice things to say about the recent James Brown biopic, Get on Up.
"It was… good," he says carefully, with a little chuckle. His diplomatic appraisal isn’t without a dash of self-preservation: Mick Jagger, a co-producer of the Tate Taylor film, also co-produced Gibney’s latest film, Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown, a documentary about the great performer’s musical and social impact that will debut Monday, October 27th on HBO.

HBO has picked up U.S. and Canadian TV rights for Alex Gibney’s Mr. Dynamite: The Rise Of James Brown, a documentary about the early years of the musical giant to the pinnacle of his career as The Godfather of Soul. The film, produced by long-time Brown fan Mick Jagger, will debut on HBO on Oct. 27.
The documentary tracks Brown’s shift from the R&B sounds that dominated black music in the early years after WWII to the funk sound he pioneered. Brown was particularly known for his searing live performances at the Apollo Theater, on The T.A.M.I. Show (where he was the second-to-last performer, playing before Jagger’s Rolling Stones) and elsewhere. Archival footage of some of that material is part of the doc.

"The One: The Life and Music of James Brown" (Gotham Books), by Rj Smith: When James Brown was imprisoned in 1988 after leading police on a two-state car chase that ended only when his tires were shot out, many people felt he was guilty of nothing more than driving-while-black and called on authorities to free the Godfather of Soul.
Those closest to Brown – long aware of the star's increasingly erratic behavior and penchant for driving fast, high on the powerful hallucinogen Pcp – saw things differently.
"We wondered what took them so long, if you want to know the truth," guitarist Ron Laster says in "The One: The Life and Music of James Brown."
That's just one of the many nuggets that author Rj Smith has unearthed in his unflinching portrait of the conflicted and contradictory superstar.
Smith interviewed dozens of the singer's associates but didn't talk to Brown, who died...

This has got to be one of the worst summers on record. Today brings the tragic news that revolutionary axeman Les Paul has died at the age of 94. Paul's life was a full and a joyful one. He continued plugging away at his art through many of his twilight years in a weekly Monday night gig at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City. I'm terribly sad that I'll never get to catch one of those Les Paul Trio performances now, as I've always meant to. I did have one very special encounter with the legendary guitarist, though.
Back in 2003, I was working at B.B. King's Blues Club & Grill in Times Square (just around the corner from my office at MTV). In June of that year, King himself came to town for a series of private performances to celebrate the club's third anniversary. I worked...
