Amanda Abbington is joining the “nepotism” conversation currently happening in Hollywood.
The 48-year-old actress recently expressed that she believes she would not have landed her role as Mary Watson in “Sherlock” if it weren’t for her past romantic relationship with Martin Freeman, who plays her husband on the show Doctor John Watson.

“Because I was with Martin at the time, there was a lot of [accusations of] nepotism being banded about,” she explained on the “Full Disclosure” podcast. “It’s true, it was that.”
Abbington further detailed how the writers thought her previous intimate relationship with Freeman would make her well-suited for the show’s character.

Amanda Abbington has revealed she believes “nepotism” helped land her role in hit BBC drama Sherlock.
Abbington was cast as Mary Watson, the wife of Sherlock Holmes’ friend and detective partner Doctor John Watson in 2014. At the time, Abbington was in a long-term relationship with Martin Freeman, who played Watson.
“Because I was with Martin at the time, there was a lot of [accusations of] nepotism being banded about,” she told the Full Disclosure podcast. “It’s true, it was that.
“Both Mark [Gatiss] and Steven [Moffat, the show’s writers] said they were trying to figure out who the best person would be to play Mary and they thought it would be the person who was going out with him.
“It made sense. And we’d worked together on many things.”

The first time we encounter Beth Dutton – the tough-as-nails, sharp-as-a-tack, mean-as-a-rattlesnake corporate raider played by Kelly Reilly on the colossally popular Paramount series Yellowstone – she’s going in for the kill.
“I will fire every f***ing employee,” she promises the suit she’s bullying, her voice rock steady. “Then I will sell your leases and your equipment to Chevron for 30 cents on the dollar, and you, buddy, you will have the unique distinction of being the only drilling company to go bankrupt in the largest oil boom of the last century.”
An oil exec doesn’t make the most sympathetic victim, sure, but “buddy” started this company in his garage. The guy has tears in his eyes when Beth forces him to say “thank you” for the privilege of her hostile takeover.

[Spoilers follow for Season 4, Episode 2, “The Lying Detective.”]
After last week’s damp squib, “Sherlock” is back on form in a genuinely terrifying episode with a shocking conclusion.
The villain of the week is Toby Jones as Culverton Smith, a wealthy and influential public figure beloved by the nation who may or may not have a secret life as a serial killer. While John is back in therapy, Sherlock is back on drugs and publicly accusing Smith of crimes he can’t prove, on account of being…well…off his tits for nearly the entire episode. It’s not until the very end that we know for sure that the great detective is right– Oh, and did we mention that Sherlock has a sister?

Well, the wait is over, and the game is once again on for our favorite high-functioning sociopath.
After a two year cliffhanger, Sherlock Season 4 Episode 1 returns in fine form, with mystery, action, humor, the character development we have come to expect from Sherlock, and a few heart-wrenching surprises.
After the excessively convoluted and exhausting mind-trip that was the movie special, "The Abominable Bride," I was quite happy to see Sherlock return to form with an elegantly told mystery. The mystery of the six Thatchers ran deep and complex, but was still intriguing and quite fun to follow.
My favorite part of the mystery was its origin. I absolutely loved how the case of the six Thatchers came to life from a simple random observation by Sherlock. The simplicity made it so much more fascinating than the dead Willborough son in the car.
I thought the six Thatchers would turn out...

New year, new Sherlock: Our favorite pompously rude detective is back to kick off Season 4 with a ripping good mystery. Sunday’s premiere, “The Six Thatchers,” not only delivers lots of action and laughs (mostly at Sherlock’s expense)… but a truly shocking twist for one of the show’s main characters.
First things first: We need to clean up that whole mess of Sherlock killing Charles Augustus Magnussen in cold blood in “His Last Vow.” Mycroft informs his government cronies that Sherlock’s role in Magnussen’s death will never leave the room, and reveals doctored surveillance footage that exonerates his brother.

There’s Something About Mary
There’s nothing like a new episode of “Sherlock” – and this was nothing like a new episode of “Sherlock.” If it wasn’t for the end credits, you’d be forgiven for assuming there was a new writing team in place. If it wasn’t for the opening credits, you’d assume it was a different show altogether.
The Game is On
Now that Sherlock has been recalled from The Shortest Exile Ever ™, he needs something to do while Moriarty spins his criminal web from beyond the grave (although he does have Twitter now – #221Bringiton was a nice touch).
Enter Greg ‘Silver Fox’ Lestrade, with a juicy case.
The initial mystery is who would want to smash statues of Margaret Thatcher, one of the most divisive Prime Ministers in British history. There are so many jokes to be made here about the obvious candidates — the miners,...

This review is based off the season premiere and will contain spoilers.
Consequence was the name of the game this episode. A fitting overall theme it was too, as the show will be dealing with the aftermath of this instalment’s shocking ending for seemingly the rest of the season. In the reams of pre-publicity surrounding the long-awaited fourth outing of Sherlock, the cast and crew routinely spoke about this being the darkest, most dramatic run of the show yet, and this episode proves they weren’t kidding.
Things start off light enough when we get a quick tidying-up of the leftovers from season 3. Due to Moriarty’s apparent return, Sherlock is let off his murder charge and endeavors to solve the case of his nemesis’ reappearance by simply doing his usual thing – cracking mysteries and being rude to people. Meanwhile, Mary finally has her baby – named Rosamund Mary. Cue...

ThFans of the BBC series “Sherlock,” the popular modern update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s signature sleuth and his trusty partner, have been eagerly awaiting since 2014 for a new season of the series, with only a one-off holiday special this past January to satiate their hunger. Now, the new season is only a little over a month away, but until then, the Masterpiece PBS Facebook page has released a host of new photos from the season. Check them out below.

The last time we saw Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Holmes and Watson was last year's Christmas special. Jan. 1, 2017 Sherlock returns, and based on the two photos of Watson carrying what many assume to be "baby Watson," we can also assume at least a nine month time gap has happened from when we last saw them. We have new photos of Mark Gatiss (Mycroft Holmes), Amanda Abbington (Mary Watson), and Una Stubbs (Mrs. Hudson). Also included in our photo gallery is one of Toby Jones, who plays Culverton Smith, Holmes's new nemesis.
Word on the street is that these could be the show's final four episodes, which I'm sure many of us would be very sad too see happen. I would love if they just left a several year time gap and come back when they feel like they have some really solid stories that they absolutely have to make.

Sherlock Christmas Special, The Abominable Bride, delivered a shock, but isn’t that all part of this glorious show’s game?
This review contains spoilers.
“It’s called The Adventure of Having Your Cake and Eating It!” Mark Gatiss joked on the set of the Victorian-era Sherlock special, displaying the kind of self-aware humour that the episode—now going by the catchier title of The Abominable Bride—was fat with.
It’s a great line of course, but also an admission. Having poured their Doyle super-fandom into creating a staggeringly successful modern Holmes and Watson, Gatiss and Steven Moffat were now going back in time to, in their own words, do it properly. Bowler hats, hansom cabs and gaslight properly. The prospect clearly filled them with glee, and the result was gleeful. For about an hour.
Having settled its audience comfortably into what seemed like perfect New Year’s Day television—entertaining,...

Sherlock, Season 3, Episode 4, “The Abominable Bride”
Written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt
Directed by Douglas Mackinnon
Aired Friday, January 2nd at 9pm Et on PBS
It has been a while since Sherlock Holmes last graced our screens—two years, to be exact. In the closing moments of the last episode, “His Last Vow,” he was sent off to exile as punishment for the murder of Charles Magnussen. However, he was recalled moments after taking off due to the reappearance of Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott). With Season Four expected to arrive next year, Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) return with a Victorian-themed special, which is perhaps the most perplexing episode to date.
“The Abominable Bride” sees the duo investigate a series of murders committed by a woman, Emilia Ricoletti, who is already dead. As Sherlock delves deeper into the mystery, he finds himself haunted by old ghosts, namely his nemesis Moriarty.

Here's what Mary Morstan, aka Amanda Abbington, had to say on a visit to the set of the Sherlock Christmas Special this February...
Warning: contains spoilers for Sherlock series 3.
How will Sherlock's trip back in time to Conan Doyle's original era affect the role of series three newcomer Mary Watson? That's what the huddle of journalists visiting the set of Sherlock's The Abominable Bride this February tried to find out in this round-table interview with Amanda Abbington.
Mary won't be quite the same as her series three self, Abbington told us, but neither will she be a subservient Victorian lady. "Not by a long chalk..."
We just saw a brief clip of the Special…
Oh, did you? More than I’ve bloody seen!
How is it playing the Victorian Mary? You put the costume on, do you immediately stand up straighter?
Yeah, you do.

It's rare we get a full set of character posters for TV shows, but Sherlock is a special case. It's been almost two years since the season (or "series," as UK residents call them) three finale of the BBC mystery show, and we don't have to wait much longer until we see the new adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman): The Abominable Bride arrives in both the U.S. and the U.K. on January 1st, 2016, and you can even see it in theaters if you wait until January 5th or 6th. The boys of 221B are back, but everything’s a little… different.
With three BBC series behind them, Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) reprise their roles of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, respectively, for January’s feature-length special, “The Abominable Bride.”
“Sherlock on the big screen. For us, it’s a giant leap backwards — into Victorian London. The mean streets of 1895 have never looked so good,” said “Sherlock” showrunner Steven Moffat. That being said, expect less texting and a whole lot more pipes, bowler hats, and waistcoats come January.

The game is afoot! After giving fans a teaser trailer at Comic-Con this summer, PBS has released a full trailer for the upcoming special episode of Sherlock.
Though much about the episode is, like much of Sherlock, shrouded in mystery, the trailer does reveal the regular cast (John Watson, Mary Watson, Mrs. Hudson, and Sherlock himself) will be back for another adventure, with a couple of key differences.
First, if the mustaches and deerstalker hat weren't enough of a clue, the entire episode will be set in the original era of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's series—the late 19th century. Other than that, very little else is revealed beyond some flashy visuals and cryptic dialogue.
Secondly, this is just a one-off special. There's no official airdate listed yet, for either the PBS premiere or the BBC premiere (though, it's rumored the special...

Steven Moffat says "not doing [Sherlock] again would be fine. If that was it, then that would be it"...
This Broadcast interview with Steven Moffat is well worth a read. In it, he discusses leaving Doctor Who, his original plan to exit after Peter Capaldi's second series, the show's scheduling issues last year, new Executive Producer Chris Chibnall, and more.

It's his comments on Sherlock though, that fans are keen to hear amid a feeling that the series four finale may have been a permanent end to the hit BBC show.
"The ratings were extremely good," said Moffat "so I guess they’ll ask us again, and then we’ll have to see first of all if we have three films we want to make, and then if Benedict and Martin have the time, schedule and inclination.

This is a round-up of news relating to Sherlock's fourth series. (We say news. We're being a tad optimistic there.)

This Entertainment Weekly interview with Steven Moffat provided a few characteristic teases from the Sherlock showrunner, including the promise that series four would contain answers "to questions which nobody has asked" (Sherlock's Gcse results? Mycroft's shoe size? We're just spitballing here). Moffat continued, "we're very exultant about a little thing we've set up that no one is talking about". Fingers at the ready, people, and let the chin-stroking commence...

Word on the street is that we'll be seeing a Sherlock Christmas special sometime late this year, and now some new set photos have emerged from the production of the acclaimed BBC series (via Vulture). Though the show is set in the modern day, these photos reveal stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes), Martin Freeman (John Watson), and Amanda Abbington (Mary Watson) walking around in period garb that you might think of when conjuring images of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original Sherlock Holmes stories in your mind. We'd seen a brief look at Sherlock and Watson dressed in a manner similar to this before, but now we see the full scope of their costumes. What could possibly have these characters dressing up like this? Speculate away in the comments section below.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return to Sherlock for the 2015 Special. Here's a round-up of the Special news and rumours so far...
Latest news
Filming on the 2015 Sherlock Special kicked off in Bristol on Monday the 5th of January. The Victorian vaulted cellars of music venue Colstan Hall are reported to be providing one backdrop for the episode.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were both snapped by trusty #setlock fans wearing the same period costume as in the preview image released by the BBC in November (see above).
Underneath that handsome top hat, Cumberbatch is sporting a shiny slicked-back hair do that, as does his costume, bears a strong resemblance to that worn by Jeremy Brett in the 80s-90s Granada Television Holmes series. Martin Freeman was also photographed in his David Burke-as-Watson-style brown suit and ‘tache (which, seeing how much the actor reputedly didn’t enjoy wearing his...

Steven Moffat has admitted that he has "no idea" when Sherlock will return.
The writer told IGN that fans could be in for another two-year wait before a fourth series of the hit drama debuts.
"If people have to wait two years, they'll have to wait two years," he said. "[It's like asking] when's the next James Bond film?
"It's not that kind of show that turns up all the time. It's just not. But the good news is, that probably means it will turn up sporadically for a very, very long while."
Moffat - who co-created Sherlock with Mark Gatiss - added: "We'll do what we can [to make the show as quickly as possible] but with no sacrifice in quality."
Amanda Abbington recently confirmed that she will return to Sherlock as Mary Watson, but revealed that she is uncertain "in what capacity" the character will reappear.
A fourth and fifth series of the Benedict Cumberbatch detective serial are in the planning stages.

Amanda Abbington has confirmed that she will reappear on Sherlock.
However, the Mary Watson actress told Vulture that she is unsure "in what capacity" her character will return.
"I am coming back," she said. "We don't know storylines yet. Well, we do know some things but aren't allowed to say. What we do know is amazing."
The third series of Sherlock ended with John (Martin Freeman) having forgiven his pregnant wife Mary for lying about her identity and past sins.
Abbington hinted that the pair would "probably be reckless" parents.
"They're both quite psychopathic," she hinted. "But I think an assassin and an army doctor who loves trouble, I mean, that kid has got nothing to worry about.
"[It'll be] screwed up mentally, of course, but if there's any bullying on the playground, we're covered."

"They're all pretty screwed up," Amanda Abbington tells Zap2it about her character and those of her "Sherlock" co-stars. "She's an assassin; he's a sociopath; and John's killed a psychopathic cabbie."
In Sunday's (Feb.2) Season 3 finale, Abbington's character, pregnant Mrs. Mary Watson, wife of Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman), best pal to Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), reveal herself to be a trained assassin just before popping a bullet from a serious-looking gun into Sherlock's torso.
As it turned out she was being blackmailed by the real villain, Magnussen (Lars MIkkelsen) and didn't shoot to kill, but it's safe to say the revelation was a shock in an episode full of shocks.
The gun Abbington used in the scene now links "Sherlock" to another great British franchise.

The worst enemies that Sherlock offers its titular main character are those that don’t seem to struggle to match our hero’s mental capabilities, or can turn his proclivities against him. This made Moriarty such an effective baddie – better than Sherlock with the media, more sociopathic, even snappier dresser – a lethal combination all told. Charles Augustus Magnussen – media magnate, friend of the Prime Minister, International Holder of All Secrets and this season’s end boss – is presented first and foremost as an amoral businessman, so terrifying because he carries himself in direct opposition to Moriarty. Where Moriarty is emotional, Magnussen is calm. Where Moriarty is screamingly insane, Magnussen is terrifyingly sane. What I’m trying to say is that Magnussen starts out dangerous, and just gets worse.
As the introduction of villains go Magnussen’s is more chilling than most, outing himself as both a power-hungry control freak and a sexual predator,...

"Sherlock" really knows how to end a season.
From the first moments of the Season 3 finale, "His Final Vow" -- set in a crack-house -- to the final twist 90 minutes later, there were few dull moments in the quick-moving, violent plot. Also, the good guys basically won in the end. That's always fun.
Watson is bored again
A month or so into married bliss, and John Watson is bored again. We're talking about the kind of bored that results in combat-filled dreams and casual trips to crack dens with a tire iron in the pocket. Fortunately for John, Mary is supportive of all of this.
Less fortunate is the fact that the newlyweds haven't been seeing much of Sherlock Holmes over the previous few weeks.
Imagine Watson's surprise when he meets up with Sherlock in the very same crack-house he has just infiltrated in order to find a neighbor's teenage son.

Tobey Maguire may be back with the Spider-Man franchise, but it wasn't cheap convincing him to wear the red spandex again. Dark Horizons is reporting that Maguire is going to earn $50 million for the next two sequels, which is expected to film back-to-back over six months. At the same time, he has worked some language into his deal that will allow him to spend early mornings and evenings with his toddler daughter, Ruby Sweetheart. Sony had to work hard to bring back both Maguire and director Sam Raimi, both of whom had been reportedly ready to leave the franchise and pursue other projects. A couple of question marks for the movies is who will play the villain (and what is the villain) and if Kirsten Dunst will reprise her role as Mary Watson. Dunst has been seeking therapy for what is being ...
